Review Omaha Bay Vineyard - Matakana

Hegman is a superbly knowledgeable vintner and an absolute pleasure to spend an hour chatting about wines with, it helps immeasurably that his wines are really good (he loves the southern French style), and that he has a fantastic menu and open yard work a dining view to enjoy his food and wine in.

Very relaxing atmosphere and particularly lovely Pinot Gris and Montepulciano. The food platters are devine and really hit the spot. Lovely hosts Hegman and Bev, many thanks.
Lynda Irving
Lovely family run winery. Had beautiful platters available to enjoy with their wine.

Hegman was very friendly and welcoming, a very pleasant space, nice wines, and a pleasant host make for a great experience and definitely worth a visit. Will be going back again, and you should too.

Beautiful Location. Every name for the wine has a story you must ask Hegmann. The sparkling and late harvest wines are amazing. Rest are just fine. There's no food menu as such. So dining would not be a great idea honestly.

Awesome little vineyard, some very cool Italian style wines. The ‘Olivia’ is a special wine, worth putting away.

Enjoyed the wine tasting , 5 for $10 with the price redeemable on bottle purchase. Definitely recommend trying the flora and sparkling flora. Lovely setting outside, very picturesque with a great view over the countryside.

Great place for wine tasting and a nice platter!

Pleasant choice of wines, and good, simple selection of food. It us nice to eat outside the cellar and look at ... the hedge, knowing that there is a great view beyond it! (Cut the hedge back a little please.)

Great service, great wine, great view. What more could you want!

We visited the vineyard after tasting OIBV's Sauvignon Blanc at a local Matakana bar. We were not disappointed. Tremendous reds especially the classic Bordeaux blend and some interesting tastes with the Petit Verdot and Montepulciano. This vineyard is well worth a visit (Fridays to Sundays it is open for tasting, opposite the road leading to Buckleton Beach). Charning hosts who answered all our questions about why and where.

Fantastic spot. Great inside art exhibition. Devine food and extraordinary good rose sparkling. It would be worth just to come for the view :)

Good location. Average wine and good service. Nice views. We went after the matakana market. Would like to try the platter next time. It looked really appealing.

Our first visit was at the end of the summer and we have since returned twice with friends.
The platters are very good and the wines on offer at the tasting are of excellent quality and variety. We have always gone for the mixed platter which has a very tasty liver pate and other such delights plus, a good range of breads, cheese and crackers. There’s also a cheese platter and one for the kids too.
The setting is superb. Approaching from the car parking area may, on the first visit, make you think it’s a little run down but, once you enter, you realise the building is very authentic to a ‘cave’. We’ve done quite a few tastings in France and it’s as good as any of those!

Wine tastings take place at the ‘cellar door’ set among large wine barrels. You really feel like you are getting the genuine experience - you can perfect your sniffing and swirling techniques but don't spit it out. Who does that?
The indoor seating area is like a cool concrete ‘tunnel’ that leads out to the outdoor area which has magnificent views north from Whangateau harbour and east across Omaha flats and beyond to Little and Great Barrier Islands. You can’t beat this setting on a sunny day so I recommend you ask for a table outside when booking. Get in early if it’s a holiday weekend or if you manage to get a voucher deal. Even without the voucher, we reckon its good value.

The indoor area can be a little noisy when it’s busy, due to its design and materials and, if you happen to be seated next to a large party of people.

Service is quick and understated. All in all, it’s a good experience but, remember the place is not open for the tasting and platters every day of the week – check the website. It’s about 12 minute’s drive from Matakana and easy to find, on the road to the magnificent Tawharanui Regional Park.

I have visited OBV a couple of times in the last 2-3 years. Our last visit being June 2013 - I cannot fault OBV. The wines, the service, the atmosphere and the food all make for a a lovely experience. I would go as far as saying OBV are the best winery to visit in our entire district, and even the greater Auckland region. OBV - don't ever change, I remember our first visit to you a few years ago was SO special and I raved about OBV to all and sundry back then - and yet again, you delivered 10 fold on the weekend also - thank you ever so much. I cannot wait to concoct another excuse to get back there! Well done OBV.
