Review Mamma Mia Restaurant 1972 - Mission Bay

Hasha Samarasekera
(Visited and reviewed on 27 August 2023) Delicious Pizzas over here at Mission Bay, despite the large sizes being a bit pricy. We ordered the Mamma Mia special, Meat Lovers and Garlic Bread pizzas, alongside the calamari. All were really good!

10/10 would recommend. Really good food like in Italy, kind service and the atmosphere was great.

8/12/23 - Just took Tandoori Chicken Pizza after a very long time we ate best pizza in town. Yummy cheese and generous quantity of Chicken. Definitely recommend.

Superb food with a nice vibe. We love relaxing out the front to watch people go by. We always enjoy ourselves here and the warm welcome is always appreciated

What stunned me is this Italian restaurant was established in 1972 - 50 Years old ! What a remarkable business. The spaghetti is perfectly cooked. The location is supreme, right in the center of the popular mission bay village.

Came in for dinner, service was good, ordered 4 pasta dishes 2 chicken, 1 Bolognese and 1 salmon along with 1 large meat lover pizza and garlic bread. All meals were tasty and great, serving portions was ok but could've used about more meat in all our pasta dishes. Prices were reasonable. Nice little Italian diner. 4 stars because parking can be little tricky to find at peak times and pasta dishes could've used a tad more protein in them.

5/5. When it comes to having great customer service and real food made out of real ingredients, this is the place. I've been there several times, I've been ordering different plates, and I can tell all of them are a "must try plate." Even the waiters have the Italian taste in their accent. They're gonna make you feel home if you're missing your home country.

Me and my family have always order the seafood pizza from this place. It is our favourite. Tastes perfect every single time. The chef is always happy.

Mamma Mia is a wonderful gem in the heart of Mission Bay! What is fantastic about Mamma Mia is that it finds balance between offering patrons high-quality italian cuisine with food that is satiating and worth its value. I highly recommend the calamari as an entree and, for those with a sweet tooth, the tiramisu is a must! The service was warm and faultless! For those frequenting Mission Bay, i implore you to check out Mamma Mia!

First time goer. Food is great. Friendly staff. Would go again. If you don't like red sauce with your mussels, you can ask for white sauce. The mustard sauce was a bit strong to my liking.

This is my go to restaurant , when I have had a busy day, need great food and quick service. Food is superb, Veal Masala my favourite. All the staff make you feel so welcome. Always so pleased I have driven from Mt Albert to Mission Bay to Mamma Mia.

Mamma Mia is a warm inviting Italian restaurant in Mission Bay with friendly hospitable staff always ready to greet you with a find smile. I simply adore the prawn tagliatelle and my sister loves the seafood chowder. The pizzas are absolutely stunning, in particular vegetariana! There is always a homely cosy ambiance at Mamma Mia and it’s always so nice reading the history in photographs of the walls. Highly recommended!

I have previously recommended Mamma Mia to friends but after the last two experiences...Sorry you need to lift your standards.
It is almost like you are bored with being there and really don’t care anymore.
The garlic/pizza bread lacked both garlic and oil/butter.
The bases for our pizzas were doughy and floury...certainly not light and crispy.
Toppings were added sparingly with a distinct lack of herbs.
We were hungry and did eat everything but when asked how our meal was I commented ‘A bit below average’ which was met with ‘Thanks, that’s nice’.
Saturday night in Mission Bay and the kitchen closed an hour before advertised and people were turned away.
I can only hope that this is an abberation, especially with the lifting of Pizza Hut standards and Sal’s just down the road.

I had a special sea food (sea food and fish actually) in a bed of spaghetti and was very nice. I also liked the environment.

This pizzeria resto is something that Italian food lovers should come and visit. The carbonara is meaty and creamy it delighted our taste buds. The steak though is not as good. I guess because I'm Asian, my palate is used to Asian flavors so I found the sauce a bit weird tasting.

Came here for my mums birthday dinner. Would recommend booking as the place was quite busy. Food was pretty good (massive portions) and we all enjoyed our evening. Staff were definitely the highlight. Friendly and attentive.

We visited Mama Mia a few weeks ago and have always enjoyed the food on previous visits. However, on our last visit we had the worst tastless garlic bread and pizzas we have ever eaten and the ingredients were not fresh and the cheese that was used was obviously cheap and tastless so we will not be returning. There was absolutely no flavour what so ever - how hard is it!!!
Evaline Shandil
we had a horrible experience here, the waitress we had wasn’t nice at all. We felt like we weren’t welcomed. We got the chicken bbq pizza & paid just over $40, could’ve gotten better at Pizza Hut. It lacked flavour and in fact it tasted a little strange too. We also got pasta which was alright.

The food you get here isn’t Upto the standard you pay for.
Wouldn’t go here again.

Good food, generous serving, friendly staff and nice ambiance. Tried their Scotch Fillet and it was cooked perfectly. The Seafood pizza was delicious too.

Went here for dinner and with out doubt it would be one of the best Italian resturants. The Pizza's are to die for. If looking for place to go for dinner or lunch DON'T LOOK ANY FURTHER A MUST PLACE TOP GO TO.

This is the second time trying food from this place. First time we dined in for a birthday lunch and wasn’t to impressed with the food and . We were just having a walk and going back to our car and noticed so many people ordering pizza for take away. So we decided we should give it a try and order a pizza for take away as well. We are glad we gave it a second chance. Got to say one of the best pizza we had. So much toppings and flavours . It was truly amazing. Will definitely visit again n order pizza from there again.

Not many vegetarian options as I hoped but service was alright. The food isn’t too bad, would recommend for meat eaters more. The food is quiet expensive and with that the servings aren’t as large dependent. But nice location.

Great food and lovely service. It’s not a fancy place but oh it’s sooo good for exactly what it is : typical Italian dinner.
The portions where big, satisfying and delicious.
It’s hard for me to find the right flavour of traditional spaghetti marinara because most of places do it differently. Was surprised when I had my plate in front of me and the way it looked was in sync with the taste: a thick tomato sauce full of richness and sea food.
Spaghetti were done al dente and the pizzas were good.

This will be my spot especially for traditional Italian pasta.
Cherie Nicole
Fettucine was delicious here and steak bistecca al'arrabiata is my favourite. Sauce for the steak is just mindblowing. Tandoori chicken pizza is also great and love taking this to the mission bay beach for a munch.

Go to mamma Mia and help out the business !

Amazing seafood and schnitzel. Booked a table outside, perfect on these summer evenings with a view straight across to the park and beach. Highly recommend the pizza bread and calamari for starters and tiramisu is a must!

Came here a few weeks ago to try Mumma Mia out as I haven’t been here in a while. Got our seat by the window which is my favourite.

Ordered the:

• Cannelloni Ripieni
• Tandoori Chicken

The Cannelloni was beautiful made. The flavours all worked together. The Cannelloni was perfectly cooked. This meal was quite heavy and filling and so sharing it with my partner was the best thing.

The Tandoori Pizza was delicious. I loved the sauce, the cheese and everything that was in this pizza.

Really enjoyed myself here. Received wonderful service. Had a wonderful filling meal and was quite satisfied with everything.

Great experience.

I haven't dined here yet so will make sure to update this review. Hubs and I love pizza and we got a take away from here a couple of times now. The margarita pizza is soo delicious, perfect base, generous amounts of mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, right amount of seasoning and baked to perfection!

We got the large pizza and it's enough for two people. If you are pizza fanatics like us, get the jumbo one like we'll do now onwards :)
Zoe The Paranoid
We ordered Calamari, Spaghetti Carborana and Meat Lover Pizza. The Calamari and Meat Lover Pizza were way salty than what we could handle. The Spaghetti was okay but still a little bit salty. We drank two bottles of water (2 ppl).

What surprised us was the ultimate respectful attitude from the manager. He had taken the Calamari and the pizza out of our bill and wanted to shout us a free dessert (we however declined).

He suggested that next time when we visit again, just ask for less salty dishes. Although I didn't enjoy the food, the experience was positive.

This establishment displays an unashamed passion for food. Simple Italian flavors done well..Bellissima! Friendly and accommodating staff.Seems to attract a good amicable crowd.

Been here twice already. Good food, good service. Ambience is serene, went on a Sunday night and not too busy , just quite right to enjoy a good meal. I ordered bolognese, it was average. My partner ordered the Mamma Mia steak, and enjoyed it. I like their calamari best, soft and not crumbed heavily, pizza is okay too.

Hey guys i want to come this friday . Can u veganize pizza? Like use vegan cheese?
I would prefer you to go vegan also or give some vegan menu option. Shomi

Took my wife and the kids here on a Friday night. The place had so many seats but they were right next to each other. It was quite uncomfortable especially when you take along your kids. Pizza was ok but extremely overpriced. Pizza we ordered was medium size and it was $38. Kids menu was quite good though. Good portion and tasted great. This made up a lilttle. Don't think we will come back though.

Taste: 4/5

Portion: 4/5

Location: 5/5

Price: 3.5/5

Service: 4/5

Overall: 4.5/5

The staffs were very welcoming and helped us with ordering. Went here about a few months ago.

I wish I could rate this in minus. The worst food I’ve ever come across in Auckland. I also wish I would have read reviews before even think about going into this place. We ordered two pizzas because we weren’t sure about the quantity. “Highly recommended” garlic bread pizza was the first disappointment. Countdown garlic bread is more tasty than that. Second disaster was veg pizza which had capsicum onion and cheese costed us $33!!! Overly priced, dull ambience and below average food are the only way to describe this place !!!
PS- couldn’t take photos because it was even that worthy

Sorry not sorry Xoxo

I should have read the ratings before stepping into this place. Food was very, very average and the service was just as bad. We asked for some more water and it never arrived. The steak with its peppercorn sauce was extremely salty. The salt and pepper squid was oily and not crispy at all. They didn't prepare it very well and the thin inner layer had my 9 year old choking and gagging because it was stuck in his throat. It gave him a scare. The garlic bread lacked flavour. When we went to pay and tried to use the Entertainment card we were told rudely by the guy that it wasn't accepted. Public holiday. Should have had a sign or told us nicely. A very grumpy man. Over priced for awful food. We will not be coming here again.

The last time I visited was about 12-13 years ago. It was rubbish then.

Guess what folks? The food crimes in Mission Bay continue unabated.

If you want pizza and pasta don't come here because it not good value for money and it ain't good food.

The service was slow. I get grumpy with slow service. I get grumpier when dealing with halfwits.
The food when it did arrive wasn't remotely special or tasty. Not the starter of shrimp cocktail or the pizza which thankfully was small.
Kim Aruejo
Overpriced for an average pizza. We had a very bad experience with their staff. He was so rude. Went there on a Saturday afternoon, not a lot of people dining in and there’s a lot of available seats. While waiting for our take away pizza, the waiter asked us to vacate the seats because 2 people were dining in. There were more empty seats and tables than the people dining in!!! Will never come back and will never recommend.
Clint Barbaso
Below average pizzas and very expensive. I would rather save my money and go to dominos or Pizza Hut. Staff was good and friendly which is the good thing but rather than that my pizza experience from this place wasn’t too good.....

I found a hair in my pasta and the waitress picked the hair out of my pasta with her hand and accused me of it being my from goatie ?!?! As all their chefs wear a hat. Then she put it back in front of me and said they can make me another one. Thats tone and hand in my food killed my appetite NO thank you. Then she said ok and walked away.
Then the manager comes alone and straight away picked up the pasta in front of me and said they will make me another one. But at that point all i want is take my pasta off my bills. Again he didnt say anything and walked away..... how about a "sorry". ??????

Sadly we went here and were extremely disappointed. The shrimp cocktail as an entree was absolutely drowning in seafood sauce... like literally an entire cup worth for just a quarter worth of shrimp... extremely over powering and this was like finding a shrimp, wiping off the sauce and eating it. Ordered the calamari as a main, which came out overly salted and completely ruined the dish. This was left and not finished. And for a foodie - this means it's bad. As the other person had ordered the steak, this was a decent size and cooked well. Just a shame the rest of the ordered wasn't good whatsoever.
Over all a very sad and poor rating. We will not be returning due to this and the prices aren't exactly cheap so I hope this review reaches you, so you are able to make those small changes to keep other patrons happy.
Thank you.
Lindsay Hunter
I was very disappointed with our dinner last night. We paid nearly $40 fr a large pizza, which is served on a plastic plate! I am not 4 years old, and being served food on plastic crockery significantly detracts from the experience of eating out. The quality of the pizza itself was ok, but not spectacular so I think over-priced. The portion of pasta was generous, but so it should be - also proved at near $40.

Food was really average. Big portions definitely but wasn't the best place for dinner especially. Out of their menu, I would recommend their fettuccine.
Dennis Tohovaka
Awesome, authentic folks, great service and kai.. lots of history and nostalgia here.. one of the few places still standing in Mission Bay.. Ciao! :)
Toby Auyeung
the tiramisu.... just doesn't feel right.. although they explained to us, it's hard for us to accept the feeling it melt in our mouths. it feels like the cake has been in the fridge for too long and all the water absorbed inside....

After living in Auckland for 18 years, my first visit to Mamma Mia was only a few weeks ago. I took my family on a Saturday lunchtime and we ordered 2 LARGE pizzas between 5 of us, which was plenty. While the meatlovers pizza was above par, unfortunately the roast lamb/BBQ chicken half/half pizza was a little underwhelming with less taste than we hoped. Should have probably stuck to one of the more original pizza recipes, perhaps. With plenty of other outstanding pizza options in the city, I won't rush back. Shame, really.

We like going here because the food is good and the portions are generous. Was here for dinner on a Saturday night, it was packed and bustling but we had made a reservation so were seated right away. The garlic pizza bread- yum, fresh light and fluffy. For mains I got the special which was lamb shanks- huge and delicious and hubs got the Pollo Alla Pizziola which he said it was "to die for" - heaps of veges, heaps of sauce and a huge portion of chicken breast! We had no room let for dessert! Will definitely go back.

This is the best Italian restaurant we have been to! Came for lunch last week and the food was fast and amazing! My dad is very picky and has high standards when it comes to eating out but he has never once complained about this place... every time we come the staff are amazing and they all remember us. They make every time a wonderful experience highly recommend 😊

Came across this place while walking around Mission Bay. We weren't hungry but felt peckish for calamari. The interior looked nice so we decided to try it out. Service was of a high standard throughout the night but that was let down by the food. $19 for some soggy calamari is disappointing no matter how it's presented. Worse, they weren't salted properly so we had extra salty ones, bleugh. Would not recommend dining here.
Maree Epskamp
Really a fine place to dine. The service was one of a kind and the food was even better. The menu had plenty to choose from and the fish was warm and moist with fresh non frozen vegetables. Staff were very attentive and friendly, you can tell they really put passion and effort into making this place what it is.
Chloe Sharrock
If I am ever craving a sweet treat this is my go to. A hidden gem! Located in Mission Bay, hands down the best Apple Pie I have ever eaten. I can't recommend this place enough! Pie is delicious, the view is stunning, staff are friendly and pricing is reasonable
Poppy Peni
Very nice meals my husband had steak and I chicken and my kids had kids meals.. no complaints on food it was great all round and glad I had the experience.
Just a bit pricy to dine in and the takeaway option is a lot cheaper by at least $5 per meal or order.
Steve Hall
Went along spur of the moment on New Years eve for dinner.
They managed to get a booking on short notice and when we got there the place was busy but got our table straight away.

Had the Chicken fettucine, and a garlic pizza .

Was really good tasting, and hot, and big size. didnt need anything else after that.
Reasonable prices for the and good quick service.

Would go again for sure, enjoyed it all
Timer
One of the best Italian food experience. Still remember the days that manna Mia was just more of a take away pizza place. Great to see it has become a great proper restaurant. Had penny Pavarotti and seafood risotto. So yummy. Be back to try other dishes
STRADS
It was a beautiful morning at Mission Bay on a quiet Tuesday. After a comfortable stroll along Tamaki Drive, my wife & I had lunch at Mamma Mia, picking it for no particular reason. We had a small "meat lovers" pizza & smoked salmon fettucine. Food was (surprisingly) great. What a lovely day off I had. (Food - 3.5/5; Service - 4/5; Ambience - 3.5/5)

Came in on a cold night. Was so warm and toasty inside and smelled of pizza 😌 we came in for a pre dinner so we ordered small.

We got a large Mamma Mia pizza and two of us ordered hot chocolate cos it was cold. The staff there was very friendly and welcoming. The food and drinks arrived pretty fast. The pizza was delish! The pizza base was nice and the crust wasn't too hard and crunchy. Was nice and bread-like softness. The hot chocolate was very rich but not sickening.

Honesty would come back for a proper dinner here 👍🏽
Travels4Food
Fettuccine carbonara was yummy but the pizza was average. Seems frozen? There was a lot of water at the base of the pizza. I use to remember back 10 years ago when they were a quaint little place now it's just commercialised.

Bought the grab one deal for Mama Mia on a whim, as we were after some comfort food.

The location is great for dinner, being right on the mission bay main road, opposite the beach. The setting was warm and inviting and the staff very friendly and helpful.
The service was attentive which I really appreciate in an establishment.

We ordered the vegetarian ravioli, which was stuffed with spinach and ricotta, the chicken fettuncini and the antipasto platter. The platter was different to what I would usually expect, with a large salad in the middle and a lot of raw Veges, which was interesting. It did make it a little hard to distinguish what was on the platter however, so when you ate the salad it began to mix with everything else. The mussels were delicious! More of those would be great. The squid was a little chewy and overlooked, but the flavouring was good

Over the platter was not organised very well, and the flavours on the platter did not really compliment one another. It seemed a little thrown together which was a little disappointing.

The ravioli I chose to have with a Napoletana sauce, which I really enjoyed. The sauce was very tasty and rich. The ravioli pieces were very large, which made it difficult to eat. The pieces needed to be cut to be able to eat, and using a knife in a bowl is a bit harder than it sounds!
This also mean that some pieces of pasta were colder than the others due to the size, and all the heat was retained in the middle with the food around the outer ends being a bit on the cold side, which was very disappointing.

Overall, the food was okay. I can see how much better it could have tasted had a few minor details been taken care of, but overall, a little disappointing.
Michelle Hwang
Ordered one Mamma mia's Special Liquor Coffee for $ 14.00 and one rib eye stake for $ 36.00 Coffee was too strong to drink it off. Rib eye stake was juicy and tasty. Service was good.

We just moved in the Mission Bay area and have been to a few local restaurants. This restaurant looks busy when we arrived at 7.30pm on a Friday night, staff members are friendly, however the food were ordinary and over priced, we wont be going back.
Lisa Klapper
Food wasn't good. We had the vegetarian cannelloni and spaghetti marinara. No special taste and flavour and way too much Kumara in the cannelloni-not at all Italian. Maybe the pizza is better....
Emma
My family has been going here since I was a kid and it has never failed us. The service is amazing as it the food. They are extremely generous with the amount of toppings that go on the pizza and in the pasta.

A definite must try especially if you are after pizza!
Maria F
My partner and I walked up and sat down at a table to have some tea around 2pm. There was only one other table filled at the restaurant, surprising really considering it was a bank holiday.

A staff member came up to us to take our order, and when we said we would just like to have some tea, he said, "Sorry, we are a restaurant - if you aren't eating food, then we can't serve you." He promptly took away our menus and cleared the table - without even asking us if we wanted something to eat! We were floored. Surely tea is one of the simplest ways a restaurant could make money - and there was no one else even in the restaurant! If it's true that Mamma Mia won't serve you drinks only, that should be made clear on the menu.

Joke's on him, because we went elsewhere, ordered tea, and ended up ordering dessert as well. We walked past an hour later and the restaurant was still empty. Mamma Mia's could have had an easy $20+ from us but turned us away. We will not be going back.
MrGodHimself
A little pricey, but considering the location in the heart of Mission Bay that is no surprise.

I ordered my steak medium rare, but it was overcooked and came out medium. I'm not sure if the order was taken incorrectly or if the chef overcooked it (originally I wasn't asked how I wanted it done, and had to point out I wanted it medium rare as she was already on to taking the next order). I didn't complain, as I'd rather eat it medium than go to the hassle and then have to wait for another meal while everyone else eats.

Regardless it was a good cut of meat and a good portion size, it tasted pretty good but a little dry due to the over doneness (and the mustard sauce was possibly a little overpowering). It also had a good portion of veges come with it. Everyone else at the table who all ordered different things really liked their meals and had no complaints.

Other than the above, service was generally pretty good and always friendly.

There are a few Italian restaurants in the nearby area, and at first impressions this seems to be one of the better ones. I will be returning.
Winnie
Went there on a buzzing hot Sunday evening after having a dip in the sea. Ordered vegetarian and tandoori chicken pizza and vegetarian cannelloni. The pizzas were not shy of toppings and/or cheese. The tandoori chicken pizza had smokey charred pieces of chicken. And the vegetarian pizza was full...
Dimitrios Konstantopoulos
Great location. Tidy and super clean.
Great service. Pizza just fine nothing to die for.
Most dishes are typical Mediterranean delicacies. Well cooked with great ingredients. But I would like to see a bit more.
They just need a better chef I reckon.
Then it would be perfect.
A bit pricey but you can cope with this if you take into consideration the great location and the rest.
Went Saturday night with my partner - loved it - the service was good and very helpful. We started with a Garlic Pizza Bread, which was crispy and loved it. This is both of us by the way. We then got our mains which were Fettucine Al Pollo E Crema & Vegerterian pizza.

Fettucine was amazing, normally in the places its filled and filled with cream but this was was the perfect amount along with perfectly cooked chicken in my opinion.

Pizza to top it off was also again crispy crust and very nice toppings.

Will be going back soon 👍🏽👍🏽

We were walking along Mission Bay shoreline looking for somewhere to drop in for dinner, we chose Mamma Mia and what a great choice it was!

The service was absolutely incredible, not sure if he gentleman serving us was the owner but he was so friendly and helpful. We even had a great chat post dinner about the rest of our travels. It wasn't just the service that was great, the lasagne was AMAZING! Probably the best I remember having! Just a great place!

Staff is very accomodating and friendly..:)) food is lovely with big serving! I'll definitely be coming back. All our food choices is excellent!

As soon as you walk in, you feel like having a pizza. Great tasting pizza with a large selection and a great base. When I am in Auckland over the summer I enjoy comimg back. It can get a little crowded but thats because they make great food here. Highly recommended!

I would only recommend this restaurant if the restaurant is not busy. I'm been going to mama mia quite often and everytime I go their during their busy days, I had the worst experience. The last time I went, the restaurant was quite packed. My friends and I were seated promptly and as we knew what we wanted, we ordered straight away. However, our food didn't arrive for 50minutes. During the time, the table next to us whom came 5-10min AFTER us, have been serviced and finished their meal and even paid for their meal. When we asked the waiter and the waitress what was going on, we were told our food will arrive in one minute. IT DIDN'T. After asking several times why it took them so long, we were told our orders have been put on hold. We still don't know why it was put on hold. When we finally got the food, there was no apologies. The food portion was smaller than usual and the carbonara didn't taste at all like how they usually cook it. I had to tell the waitress that the carbonara was disappointing as it tastes nothing like usual. She offered if we would like them to make a new one. There was no way we are going to wait another 50min for a carbonara. She did not charge us for that particular dish. For anyone who goes there, if you really like the food, I strongly recommend to choose the times or days of the week when the restaurant is fairly empty. The quality of service and the food goes down tremendously when they are busy.
Anna Kolodeznaya
I had salmon and caper fettucine which was quiet delicious. Absolutely loved chicken and mashroom fettuccine that my boyfriend had haha he had to share it with me as i couldn't get enough of it! The staff was friendly and met our needs cant wait to go back :)
Sheena
Absolutely love the pasta here! The penne pavarotti is my fave. It comes with penne pasta, spicy lean beef meatballs and chili napoletana sauce and it's ACTUALLY decently spiced! It's spicy enough for my taste buds and that's hard to find with pasta. I've also tried the cannelloni with the beef, which was delicious as well. Haven't yet tried a pizza here but I will do next time! There's a little open space up the front where they make pizzas and it's nice to be able to watch the whole process.

Service has been pretty consistent here for me. All the wait staff I have been served by have all been friendly! Can't wait to be back!
Mat
This restaurant has an amazing aura about it due to its location alongside the ever popular beach - Mission bay. The setting is quite romantic which makes it very suitable for date nights. The food is quite good, but as I always say, it's hard to find an Italian restaurant that makes amazing lasagne.

Overall, friendly staff, good food, beautiful surrounding.

Been here a couple of times. Veal was good so were the pizzas, otherwise the place is pretty stock standard. There are better places for sure, this place has its charms but realistically as I said before there are better places.
FoodLoco
Look out for a grabone voucher if you want to try this place
Its usually a hit or miss - don't get me wrong the food is good but the few times I have been here I would love a dish and when I order it again the next time it doesnt taste as good as it did the first time round? I am not sure if its me or if its just different chef different day...
Kai Mai
Service was quick, food came out in a timely manner. Our waiter was polite and attentive. Food was ok but a bit pricey. Would only return for special occasions, not the typical dine-in on the regular type place.
LouLou
Wonderful family restaurant - my nephews always love a visit - and a perfect spot for a casual bite to eat before a movie on date night. Love that they are able to make gluten free garlic bread and have always enjoyed meals here whether pasta or pizza. A dependable family run restaurant, still going strong after all these years.
Local Foody
I'm a local and we come here from time to time because it's consistently great food, with generous food portions. Finding good value for money is increasingly difficult these days but Mama Mia is one such place. AND it's byo wine if you choose. What more could you ask for? Our favourites are the lamb shanks, and the peppercorn scotch fillet both served with generous yummy fresh vegetables. The head waiter is a pleasant guy who recognises you and yes remembered what I had last time. Keep up the good work guys.

We have been going there for years because almost every time has been a pleasant and good experience.

We went Saturday 2 May. Usually we have one of the Italian mains, but for a change we had pizzas. They were cooked to perfection (not difficult I guess) with fresh ingredients and a good size for not large eaters.

The service was as always excellent; attentive and efficient without being intrusive.

It is good to know that you can go to a place and it will always be a good experience.
Supreet Kaur
Im not sure about this one as the service and the food taste varies every time I've been there. Sometimes it's amazing and at other times I've felt like leaving asap.
Last time was alright and I got the cannelloni which was really really hot and I had to wait 10 minutes before I could start eating. Made me realise that food temperature when served is a very important factor for me!

Came here for birthday celebration. Was happy about the food we ordered and the smiley waitress who served us. I wish I can be served by a waitress like this in every restaurant that I go to!
We ordered a regular meat lovers pizza, a chicken fettuccine and a penne pavarotti. The pizza was great and the sauce on the chicken fettuccine was soo creamy. I love the penne pavarotti, though my parents found it a bit spicy :) We ordered a bit too much, and need to pack some away.
Interesting enough, we had rooms for dessert and ordered chocolate mousse and tiramisu.
One word - Yum!!
Mum already said she wanna come back for chocolate mousse!
Btw, I really love the photo of the 1955 Ferrari!

Superb dining experience with a great setting and atmosphere with consistantly great service and exceptional food. The head waiter even remembered what we ordered the last time we were there weeks before. Always a favourite and always authentic!

Delicious Italian food! Enjoyed a pizza and pasta off the takeaway menu, took it across the road to enjoy the beach and fountain. a bit On the expensive side but was not disappointed with the quality ??.

I while ago I would have given Mamma Mia a 5/5. But lately quality in the food has dropped which kind of sucks I don't no if they have changed hands or what..

I went for lunch one day a few weeks ago and it was amazing I got the tortelli I defiantly recommend that dish! Also the tandoori pizza...To die for!
But a couple a couple weeks later I went for dinner and I got the chicken fettuchuni with mushrooms and the chicken wasn't cooked well at all and after a couple mouthfulls it was just boring and tasteless. Unless they have a different chef on for lunch and dinner. But if thats the case put the lunch chef on for dinner!!! More people go for dinner than lunch. I hope they can keep up the great meals if I have another bad meal I won't be going there on the regular anymore, it is by far one of my favourite restaurants but if the bad meals continue it won't be anymore.

Fingers crossed!

I live around the corner and have been here a few times. I want to like the place but it just keeps disappointing. The pasta dishes which i have tried the lasagna, the spicy meatball and penne dish, the chicken and cream sauce, ravioli to name a few. THey all have an over abundance of garlic in. So much you can see the diced garlic on the bottom of the dish. I know its Italian right whats wrong with garlic? This place uses so much it over takes the whole dish you cant taste chicken, you cant taste pasta, meatballs, etc. If you have ever been to Italy, dont eat here, it is crap compared to the most touristy place you can find in Italy. I think this place was probably once good, but they must skimp on their quality by over doing it with garlic to use less other ingredients. THe ravioli was hard and dry. Chicken and cream sauce dish was very oily. THe last time I visited they refused to take my grabone voucher. I was in compliance with all of the conditions of the voucher. THe gentlemen checking me out after my meal was rude. This is the type of place that gives grabone a bad name and I will not be returning. I was so hopeful to like this place too as it is so close to home.

My friends and I went for dinner at Mama Mia a couple of weeks ago and it was great. A bit pricey... for us students, but it was still reasonable. However their food and service were excellent and will definitely visit again in the future.

Been here 2 or 3 times. Their gnocci is amazing. I've always had a good time here and it's one of my favorite Italian restaurants to go to. Would recommend this to others.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Mamma Mia Mission Bay, the food was very tastey and service was also good. The only downfall is the prices. The food prices are quite high in comparison to portion sizes, although the taste is not lacking at all. Regardless, we had a great experience here
Thefoodloverrr
We went there using a voucher, therefore we didnt really feel the pinch of the quite highly priced food. However, the fettucine pollo de crema pasta and cocktail entrè were amazing. The super special pizza and chocolate mousse were ordinary though. We didnt really like the tandoori pizza.
Oliver Rose
Amazing restaurant. The service was prompt and friendly. The food magnificent and whole atmosphere was incredible. Definitely going there again.

Used a deal voucher last year, ordered the cannelloni & lasagna - best Italian food I've tasted so far in Auckland. Would happily travel all the way from Manurewa to grab some if i'm craving

$17.50 for corned beef lasagna WTF.

The food was horrible, it seemed like bacon in the lasagna. On complaint the owner admitted to putting corn beef in the lasagna, but stated 'it's not from a can, so it's fine'. Refused to refund us, called us a liar to our faces with the evidence right in front of him.

They must be struggling, why else would you make such a simple mistake and then refuse to refund.

Do not trust these people with your health they don't care about you.

Was a bit dubious about eating here after all the bad reviews but thought I'd give it a go since I was in the area and they had a voucher going. Shouldn't have worried, had a good experience. The service was fast and friendly (though there were only 4 customers in the restaurant at the time so I'd be worried if it wasn't), with the waitress topping up our water as soon as we ran out. Had no problems with using our voucher. The food was what you'd expect from this kind of place: not the greatest meal you'll ever have, but tasty enough. I can't speak for the pizza, though, as we both ordered pasta. The servings were HUGE, both me and my partner struggled (and failed) to finish them.
Jason
Had a great night out food came out fast and tasty. Had not been for a couple of years and I was put off by the other review but I found them to be the same as always good food and good atmosphere. The tiramisu was great once again.

Also not sure why the reviews are so bad below, we had a deal voucher. Went there for lunch, food was very nice, service was absolutely fine and had an overall pleasant lunch experience. So much so that any time there is a voucher available would not hesitate to purchase again and again. Thank you Mamma Mia.
Claire
I'm not sure why the reviews below are so bad. We had dinner here last night. We sat outside, as we had our dog with us. It took a while for the waitress to come and take our orderm though she did say they weren't expecting anyone to sit outside in the winter. Luckily for us it was a reasonably warm evening and the outside heaters made it even more comfortable.
Our pizza and pasta were delivered to our table within 10 minutes of ordering, and both dishes were very tasty and we have no complaints about food quality. We were checked on a couple of times to make sure we were happy with our meals, and to check if we needed anything else.
We felt the pizza was a little overpriced, but that wouldn't put us off going here again.

I had the utterly unfortunate luck of choosing to dine at this restaurant earlier this week, as I'd obtained a deal voucher (Mistake #1).

I really wasn't going to write a review and just simply never look at this shop again but felt like I should at least warn anyone who might be contemplating even buying a voucher.

Service was probably the thing that ticked me off consistently from start to finish. The head waiter and cashier (or possible owner) would never make eye contact the few times he spoke. He brought the wrong dish to our table and when we told him he took it away without a word and sent another waitress to bring the correct one - To be fair the other waitresses were quite attentive and friendly.

When he took our order he didn't ask whether we wanted our soup before our mains and subsequently we assumed it would come out before as it was on the entree menu. However, we received one main with a 10 min gap till the next main and then the soup shortly afterwards for dessert and only after we had to ask how long it would be.

I guess the taste of the food is debatable but for any regular diner at Italian restaurants, you would probably categorize it in the same ranks as franchise stores like La Porchetta. The price I feel is far too steep considering this and I would choose Mamma Rosa down the road without hesitation.

It's really unfortunate that this kind of experience is offered in such a prime location and I feel that's the single good thing they've got going for them, aside from mediocre food.

Oh, if you do end up dining there for whatever reason I don't know, ask to not be seated behind the pizza oven as we had to battle a fly for 40 mins - Other side seemed safer.

Had a very disappointing experience with this restaurant. It's one of those places that love opting into the various voucher deal offers, then treat customers with contempt when they are used. Why bother attracting clientele then making them so unwelcome they would never want to come back?

We ordered garlic bread, a pasta dish (it was that forgettable) and a steak dish. Garlic bread was the best part, enough said. Everything was fantastically mediocre, and that's even with the goggles of a 'discounted price'. The service from the staff was okay, but the cashier (who may or may not have been the owner) was rude and didn't make eye or contact or even say thanks. Ruined a great night.

Went with two friends on a raining Saturday for lunch. Despite there only being one other table there, we were completely ignored by staff when we walked in, and had to awkwardly stand there waiting - it wasn't that they hadn't noticed us either. When they finally decided to attend to us, they asked us where we would like to sit. we made a request to sit at a particular table. The waitress was abrupt to the point of rudeness when she told us it was reserved - when the weather was pouring outside, and again, with us being the second table of customers in the restaurant? Surely they could have been flexible, even on the small chance that the table was actually reserved. In the end, we werent even given a choice where to sit.

The meal was alright, but extremely overpriced. Very disappointed as with that amount of money spent into the meal, as it wasnt been made up for by the customer service.

I often visit Mission Bay to dine in, however it was a Friday night and my wife and I were tired so we opted for takeaways. When I got there to order, it was very busy with the restaurant almost full, however that is no excuse. I placed my order for two pizzas and then was told it would be 20mins. Well half an hour later I went in to check if they were ready, asking the cooking staff only to be completely ignored. Anyway, long story short I waited for over an hour (as they lost my order) for two mediocre pizzas which cost me $50...Probably won't be going back :(

The service of the night was really good with a very attentive waitress. Two of us shared a large pizza (Which was the size of a dinner plate) and salad. The pizza was very ordinary. It looked like something you would expect your 12 year old to make- the crust was not a good base (tasteless, soggy in the middle, hard to pickup and only crispy on the very edge). The toppings were very disappointing- The meat lovers half had only 3 slices of salami on it and squares of chopped processed ham. That was it!. The salad was just Mesculin, with 4 olives, 3 cubes of feta and a very bitter vinegrette dressing. This came to $47 ($38 for Pizza, $9 for salad). Such a disappointing meal.

Our first visit to this restaurant did not disappoint. We ate with our 4 children (aged 2 - 7) and found the staff to be extremely friendly and attentive. There was plenty of choice on the kids menu and the portions were generous. The food was delicious and well cooked. Adults meals were good too - including perfectly cooked steak and al dente vegetables. Would definitely go back again.

The service was really friendly. Our waitress catered to our every need, but the food was terrible. Our garlic bread starter was quite nice, but the two mains were the kind of food I'd expect my grandma to cook. The steak dish had vegetables that were boiled to a mush, with no possible nutrients remaining, one potato was overcooked, and another undercooked, the fettuccine with salmon and capers was hugely salty and so over-seasoned, there was no distinguishable flavour... This was like a bad 70s diner. I wouldn't normally mind if I was paying $15-20 for this, but these were prices you would pay in top central Auckland restaurants with amazing reputations and consistently good, fresh tasting food. We did say something after dinner about the food being average, and received a sincere apology which was nice, but we won't be coming back, sorry.
Ash
Went here for lunch and had a large pizza. For $35 a pizza we would have been better off going to Pizza Hut and getting the same thing for less than $10. There was nothing good about this pizza, it really did not taste any better than Pizza Hut. No value for money and no reason to go back.
Mailgina
Food was ok, but there's a better Italian restaurant not too far away. I do feel it was quite verpriced for the quality of food and service.

Service - very slow and was ignored several times when trying to pay the bill. On leaving the restaurant, I discovered a queue on payments. This should've just been explained. We were left sitting for quite some time with the bill in the air and no response.

I would just like to Thank you very much for another fabulous meal last nite. My sister came over from Melbourne and she too enjoyed her meal last nite. Thank you all very much. Happy New Year all. See you on the 3rd ill be back for dinner for my birthday.

Primo pizza & pasta!

Highly recommended, we had a delicious tandori chicken pizza and a ravioli, well worth the trip to the restaurant. Can also take out which is much cheaper and have dinner at Mission Bay beach. Traditional Italian food with real Italian flavour!

I had takeaways from this place twice and both times the pasta was great, I really enjoyed your gnocchi. Will visit again soon

Pretty Average, nothing special.
I wasn't expecting much due to the other reviews, but we had a voucher in the Entertainment book so decided to give it a go. I ordered the blackboard special of chicken and pesto lasagna. It was greeny in colour indicating there was some pesto through the abundance of creamy sauce but could not taste it. I also had a hard time trying to locate the chicken in amongst the layers of pasta. Extremely rich as all there was was to eat was sauce, but it was washed down nicely with the surprisingly pleasant house 'Special' pinot gris.
My friend had the chicken parmigiana, a bit lack lustre but edible. Over priced for what it was.
Overall I wasn't too disappointed as I wasn't expecting much anyway.

This evening I visited Mission Bay, passed the pizzeria and decided to take a seat and spent 21 dollar for a single pizza (smallest they had). The classic pizza tasted like a good deep fried micro wave pizza, the delivery was on time and service ok, but do not go there if you are looking for a real Italian pizza / fresh oven baked pizza. Consider the several other pizzerias in Mission Bay / K'rama / St Heliers and the prize of food, the admosphere and the funeral faces of some of the staff it's not worth going there another time unless you are very hungry.

Have been there twice. First time was un-impressed with the below quality food. Lasagna was mushy and tasteless. Second time, went with a large crowd, as I came late, I asked the waiter for a seat to join on to the table, to which he replied "I was only told of 13 in the booking", then left us to figure out how to fit me in. Food again, was quite terrible, I ordered the vegetarian cannelloni, which was far too sweet, and tasted like pureed baby food. Very expensive resturant with food that probably isn't worth your buck.

Went with hubby last nite for dinner, very disappointing indeed. Ordered large salami pizza, not very large, had exactly 6 salami's on it, filled with onion and capsicum, no sauces.
Over priced, payed $35 expecting some kind of gourmet pizza.
Complained on the way out to manager, he said thanks for the feedback!! Will never visit again.

Dropped in unbooked on a busy Sunday. Seated immediately and attended by a friendly waitress who was able to advise my wife on menu related issues. Took our order without fuss or delay and provided water as a matter of routine. A small glitch with the Appetiser but it was quickly corrected before we even noticed, and the serving was complimentary. I tried the fillet steak and mushrooms, my wife the Bolognese. Both were delicious. The steak, medium rare melted in the mouth. The mushrooms were fresh and young. and the garlic sauce was strong and salty, but quite nicely suited to my palate. Bar service was timely and unobtrusive. As we finished our main we were approach by a different waiter who apologised for the near invisible glitch and offered a complimentary dessert. I chose the gelato which was every bit as good as the last time I tasted it in Turino! We were very impressed on all counts and will definitely return.

I am just writing to thank you for the very enjoyable meal we had at your restaurant.

We came into Mission Bay with friends visiting from overseas. When we arrived at the restaurant, without a booking, it looked extremely busy. The staff were only too happy to organise us a table, while we waited outside under the heaters.

The service was friendly, polite and quick.

The meals were amazing. We enjoyed the garlic pizza bread, pizza, veal and gnocchi - which was the most amazing dish I had eaten in a long time.

We look forward to returned to Mamma Mia.
Thanks for a great night out - our overseas guests enjoyed it as much as we did.

Kind Regards
Helen

My husband and I popped in to your restaurant for lunch and what a wonderful experience. The service, what excellent service, and the food was absolutely incredible. Compliments to the chef again thankyou. It was our anniversary and we would normally go to a restaurant in town but im so glad we decided to try something new because we have a lovely experience thankyou again. You can guarantee we will be back and will be highly recommending your restaurant to all our friends.

Dinner | March 2011 | An over-priced very ordinary meal. My husband had the Canaloni which was tasty but that is not hard to do. I had Fish of the Day which was Snapper - for $32 it was nothing more than a rip off. The piece of fish was small, the sauce was just that, a sauce and the vegetables (2 small pieces of broccoli and 4 carrot sticks) were unimaginative, whilst the deep fried potatoes tasted as though they were a few days old (at least!). Not recommended.
EF
Total and utter rip off. Clean and tidy, but $43 for an underwhelming pizza and one fizzy drink? The pizza had pre-cut, cheap ham on it, and was lacking in other toppings. There was one good staff member, but the others were disinterested to the point of being rude. Would not recommend and will not be going again.

We recently celebrated a special family occasion at Mamma Mia which had to cater for three generations. We were recommended Mamma Mia by friends and glad to say that we weren’t disappointed.

The staff were very welcoming on arrival and quickly got us sorted with seating - with highchairs & booster seat

The kids menu is great – $15 for a pizza or pasta followed by ice-cream and kids drawing pencils & pads – kept them quiet for a while!!

We sampled a good range of their meals – steaks (superb!), veal (the marsala one was excellent), the lamb shanks! and pastas & pizzas

We had a great night out and it worked out good value for money – the drinks & wine were reasonably priced too.

Well done Mamma Mia – we’ll be back !!!

We just used our deal voucher last night and I can recommend Mamma Mia's.

Our family has been going to Mamma Mia since 1989 and it's a great place to eat at below average Mission Bay prices.

Always consistently good and never had a dud meal!!!

My Wife, two young children and a small group of friends hoped to enjoy a some nice Italian food and friendly atmosphere. I was very very disappointed!!

At first they tried to seat 8 of us on a table that only seated 5 even after we had pre-booked. We were then ignored and had to ask several times if we could order. Each time the waiter, who i believe was the owner looked annoyed. The food was really quite bland with no real flavour.

At around 9:30pm the place was fairly empty so the waiter opened the front door to let the freezing cold air in. Obviously knowing we had children with us, I presume he was hoping we would leave. That was bad enough but to top it all off when we asked for a desert menu he just pointed to the board and walked off. One minute later he said with some attitude "Have you made up your minds yet"! Unanimously we decided against deserts.

I've been to restaurants all around the world and have eaten in some pretty bad places but have never experienced such a rude nasty waiter!!!
Whitney2011
Food - The house breads were really good. The fettuccine Pollo I ordered was dry. The chicken was overcooked. My husband's steak was cooked right but it was a cheap cut of meat (lots of connecting tissue). My husband got served the wrong drink.

Service - Pleasant

Atmosphere - The seating was like as if we were inside a cafe. There were flies on the walls and dining tables. People openly complained which was quite disturbing and the waitress didn't know how to handle difficult customers.
Julienne Faleauto
Great pizza if you are tired of the cheap nasty all topping no filling pizzas of the chain pizzas
With nice full filling
My favourite pizza
Plus their pizza bread is great
Been buying it off and on for the last 29 years

We went to mamma mia for dinner two weeks ago. Even though they were very busy, the order was taken promptly. We ordered calamari and pizza bread for starter. I believe they make the best calamari in Auckland. The main arrived very quickly. We were prepared to wait for a while because they were very busy. The food was lovely as always. We will go back again very soon

This week we tried Mamma Mia on recommendations from friends and we had a great meal … calamari & pizza bread for starters was superb and the pepperoni pizza & chicken fettuccine was good too! Service was quick & friendly so overall all a good time had by all. Would recommend as good value for money.

Went here last week with 3 other friends. We waited for about 10minutes for a waiter to come and ask for our orders. We ordered three pizzas and a garlic bread - i asked for the special with chicken instead of shrimp/prawns?, and one of us ordered a BBQ chicken pizza. The waiter returned a couple of minutes later saying that they had run out of chicken..(um!?) So we ordered something else, and then decided to cancel our order about 30seconds later as we thought it would be best to just go somewhere else. We were then told that they miraculously had chicken again somehow, and that they would make a 'special' order for us? (we then made sure that our original order was being made) When we were given our pizzas, they had given us the wrong pizza which wasn't a chicken one at all, and my pizza had no chicken on it so i have no idea what on earth these people were trying to do!!! The garlic bread was dry and didn't have any flavour whatsoever, and the pizza was disappointing. This was the worst service and worst food i have ever experienced at a restaurant, and i will never ever be going back, and definitely wont be recommending this place to anyone at all. Terrible service. Terrible food. Terrible attitude. would give zero stars out of five if i could.
Thishan Adikariwattage
We ordered Calamari as the starter and Fettuccine as the main. Service was good. But the food is not up to the standards I expected. It is definitely not valuable for the amount you spend their. It lacks the taste. I still prefer the Italian food you can find at La Porchetta for a much lesser price and of very good taste.
Jim
We probably should have left when we were seated at the rear of the restaurant and noticed that their house vodka was the infamous Kristov 62 of teenage binge drinking fame ("contains 62% vodka"). I was driving so ordered a coke, it was warm, flat, and poured from a 1.5lt bottle (my friends drinks were fine). We started with the 'Garlic Pizza Bread' for the table, bread was dry and slightly burnt. Ordered mains: one friends lasagna was decidedly average (he commented that it seemed to have been microwaved), my other friends $35 eye fillet appeared to be a cheap tenderized supermarket cut of meat (the vegetables were good however). I had the main serving of calamari which had the texture and taste of being previously frozen (possibly from the box). The accompanying side salad could be described as spartan - it consisted of two quarters of a tomato, a single slice of cucumber, a whole slice of red onion (roughly cut), and lettuce sans dressing. The staff seemed tired and unenthusiastic (The man whom I assume was the manger spent the duration of our visit rapidly drinking glass after glass of red wine in the kitchen). After we left the consensus was that we should have eaten elsewhere. Given the price, and the poor quality of the meals I will not be back.
AngeLi
I enjoyed our dinner here. We tried their special meals for the day and we liked it. The staff were so friendly. I'll definitely come back.

Had heard friends and family rave about this place so on our anniversary my partner and I travelled into town to try this place out.
I was sadly disappointed, We were left waiting for quite some time and the restaurant wasnt that busy, we ordered a Garlic bread which took 30mins and when it came out it was burnt to a crisp it should never have been sent out and the chef even looked at us with an expression on his face he knew it was not enjoyable.
We then ordered a large pizza to share, the pizza came out and it was soaked with juices underneath, it had to be eaten with a knife and fork and we paid $40 for it. When it came time to settle the bill I told them I would not be paying for the garlic bread and they were not too impressed at this but it was completely burnt!

I have only been the once and I will not go back again.
Overpriced and the food is nothing to rant about.
John Layne
Possibly the worst Italian restaurant I have ever had!

Bad service - waited for about 15mins in a half empty restaurant to get menus, waited another 10 for waitress to ask for our drinks order.

Food - soggy pasta - entrée of ham was straight from the supermarket slimy and out of a packet.

My partner and I live in Mission Bay, and we will never go back
E Z
Great place to eat pizza and pasta, with a voucher ! Ravioli was very yummy. Prices a bit on the high side but probably reasonable in mission bay. Environment and service was good as well.
