Review Mission - Mission Bay

Town Belt Kaitiaki
During 2017, this iconic Auckland building was earthquake strengthened, and its surroundings revitalised with stories associated with the history of the building told through interpretation. The site also features a new café and restaurant, along with a new function space on the Mission Bay waterfront. There is no charge to visit the grounds and exterior.

Too bad a reasonable location has such a bad restaurant in all aspects. By the way, the 'view' is people urinating on the outside walls of the public loos that are locked late night, and other various drunk people hanging about the fountain at Mission Bay. They have tried to use a 'pop up' food kiosk scenario to make this place work, but even that is bad. Another Mission Bay tourist trap.

We arrived as a family to celebrate a birthday expecting a great experience. The setting and weather was amazing, so we chose to sit outside - perfect!
Then things started to deteriorate. Service was very slow, and we often wondered if they had forgotten us after an order was placed. When the food eventually arrived, it was disappointing and very overpriced.
Don’t use the beanbags under the trees, our grandchildren played on them and came back filthy.
A beautiful day spoiled by amateur service and very expensive value for money.
Such a shame when you look at the amazing setting!

We had a lovely waitress, was great at looking after a big group. But the food seriously needs looking at. The chicken was barely warm and was so DRY and tasteless that it was impossible to even chew. No food was up to par for the price of this restaurant. But the waitress really was lovely and very helpful.

Start to finish a really disappointing experience at Mission and won't be going back.

I rang to book a table for 5 and after lots of humming and hawing was told "ok we can squeeze you in" yet when we got to the restaurant at lunchtime it was more than half empty??

We were seated relatively quickly but nobody brought any menus so we had to try to catch a waiter's attention to bring us some. Ten or fifteen minutes later and nobody had come to take our orders despite them not being busy, so again we had to wave somebody down. Finally our orders were taken but it took an hour and 15 mins from first arriving at the restaurant for our food to be on our table, and that was after one of us had to go up to the desk to ask where our meals were. Very poor service.

The food we got was mixed. One salad was pretty tasty but a steak that was ordered "medium" was very rare, and the fish and chips was average with far too much pepper seasoning in the accompanying salad. We didn't stay for dessert or coffee as we ran out of time.

Overall terrible service and average food means unfortunately we won't be coming back. Shame, as the location is nice and the decor is cosy.

We had a lovely late lunch at Mission in their beautiful courtyard. The location is perfect and a great place even on a winters day to sit in the sun. They had lots of gas heaters that the staff turned on as the sun went down to keep us warm. Lots of good gluten and dairy free options and the food was delicious and reasonably priced.

Beautiful setting, fantastic international staff. Sadly the food let down the whole experience. We ordered a seafood platter and have to say it was one of the most disappointing seafood platters we have come across in many years. The oil vats you use are obviously old dirty and rancid. The batter on all the seafood was burnt and rancid tasting. Seafood well over cooked. Total waste of oysters, squid and fish. The prawns seemed pre frozen. mussels tasteless. Tasted like store purchased tartare sauce and ridiculous thousand island dressing. Any local fish and chip shop serves up better for quarter of the price!! Very sad for such a great location with great staff. We certainly will not return nor recommend to anyone.

An all round pretty disappointing first visit here. Me and 3 other girls came here on a Tuesday night for $5 Taco Tuesday.

Among us all we bought the 3 taco options that they had which was king prawns, fish & chicken which usually run for $8 each. The prawn was the best one because it was cooked really well but the fish was a little sad looking as it was really small and looked more like a glorified fish finger. The salads/sauce also really weren’t very much different from each other so it all just tasted like the same taco with a switch in the protein. I didn’t have the chicken but my friend said it did resemble of a chicken wrap you could make at home.
3/5

The other sides we got were hush puppies, lamb ribs, calamari & karaage chicken (I didn’t try this so I can’t speak about it but my friends did say it was good)

The hush puppies were the best out of the bunch but that’s not much of an achievement as the texture was really flour-y and dense. The saving grace on this dish was the crispy bacon bits that were an additional $4 add on. 3.5/5
The lamb ribs were also okay, they were soft and came off the bone which was awesome but the meat wasn’t marinated in the sauce it came with so it didn’t really stick to the meat when you tried to scoop it up and the lamb tasted really gamey. 3/5
Calamari was probably the most disappointing as they were chewy, not fresh, drenched in batter and half of the plate was in one big cluster. It’s annoying as this is easily prevented if they had spent a little extra time putting each individual battered calamari into the deep fryer instead of putting a scoop of it straight in and therefore creating a cluster of batter and random calamari rings. Me and another friend shared this among us and not sure if we can put 100% full blame on this being the culprit but we both took work off because we felt really unwell the next morning.... 1/5

In all honesty, my friends had an alright experience here and maybe you will too.
I think it’s just a pet peeve of mine of going to a place where they put 100% of their heart and loving into making the place beautiful and setting up the best vibes for wanting to spend your summer Sunday afternoons here but don’t put in nearly as much heart and effort into their food.
We ate through everything cos it was all edible, it just wasn’t worth the $53 I spent on it. The prices are quite steep for the low quality of food you get, and I understand that the rent is high with the restaurant located right by the beach with great parking options but it’s all around, just disappointing.

If I were to ever come back, it may just be for some $7 shoestring fries and a cocktail or 3.

Decor: 5/5
Food: 2/5
Service: 3/5

This place looks really good. Love the ambience, perfect location-beachfront. Ordered the half flame grilled chicken, the flavour was yum but the breast part of the chicken was dry, and the serving size was a little disappointing for the price. Had fish and chips, it was good. Though, I found the chips a little salty. Also, ordered the karaage chicken, I reckon this is their best selling menu. I loved it, my husband agreed as well.
Ambience: 5/5
Staff politeness and friendliness: 4/5
Food: 3.5/5
Affordability: 3/5
total rate= 3.875

Disappointing as we were forgotten and ignored. It took 20 minutes to gives us a menu, another 20 minutes to take our order and after another 40 minutes: nothing, no drinks or food. As the staff were obviously not preparing our order as they were standing around chatting, we just walked out.
This was our first time in Mission, was it a bad day? Is this the norm? Will not be back

Food such as salads was alright. Did not have freshly squeezed juice available when I went there. Had a singer there performing which was great fun. I love the environment there.
