Review The Red Beret - Motueka

Josephine Tucker
Tasty food for all 5 of us. Nice staff . They were friendly and efficient. For example I was asked if I wanted cinnamon or chocolate with my cappuccino. Cinnamon I replied and got a" good choice" in return. We had fun looking at local paintings on the wall and reading magazines. Our late morning tea included 10 varied items and they were served very close together. It was nice and warm inside and the toilets were well sign posted.

The Little Red Beret is opposite the red brick district high school. At first it seemed not as cool as the renamed big mamas along the road. However the staff were very nice, a good selection and really nice. Fresh baby spinach, blue cheese and lots of toasted walnuts. Bacon quiche, big serve, tasty, excellent. I would rate as easily the best cafe in Mot. The coffee was great.

Every single time I stop in Motueka I stop and eat breakfast here. It's awesome! I always get the Balsamic Mushrooms, yummy! Coffee is awesome as well. The service: it's like coming in to grandma's for breakfast. The lady who owns it is super charming and calls everyone "darling". If you have the patience to wait for a home cooked meal, this is your place! If you have a negative, on a rush attitude, best go elsewhere. I've been to over 200+ restaurants in a year of traveling all of New Zealand and this is one of my favorite stops.

Had the Big Breakfast and a flat white, both were very good. The owner is very friendly, and seemed to know everyone that came through the door by name. Recommended if you want a nice meal and good coffee.

I have been here a couple if times and never disappointed. Being a coffee freak I love receiving a HOT coffee and tasting the coffee and not milky liquid. (Cappuccino ). Nothing worse than milky cappo. Food is always generous portions and tasty. Thank you Red Beret.

Loved The Red Beret. Sat outside with the dogs and we had a nice coffee. The food looked great but we didn't have any when we went as was just an afternoon coffee stop. The staff were super friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

Have been here several times and the coffee has always been really good, the curly haired guy behind the counter is a real asset; takes orders, sorts the till, makes the drinks, plates, finishes and serves the cabinet food, clears the tables, smiles at the clients and has a friendly manner and sense of humor. The older woman, the boss, I think could do with a dose of sugar some days and doing some more of the tasks when it's just two people on deck. Hospo is a tough business and clients have a lot to choose from; somewhere bright, clean and good service make a huge difference to the overall experience and scorecard.

We had breakfast here today. Eggs and bacon! Came with toast and tomato, beautifully cooked and a nicely portioned. Great coffee too!

Our regular weekend coffee stop. Excellent coffee and very friendly service. Excellent cabinet and cafe food. Well worn; the decor could do with a refresh, but a nice casual, cheerful atmosphere.

We loved the food here. Unfortunately 'All Day Breakfast' only means all day if the kitchen is open, however the food under the counter was really delicious! Thanks for a great meal!

Great food and helpful service. On a very wet day the lady kindly let our very wet long haired border collie inside by the front window while we had coffee.

Disappointing quality of food. I ordered a bacon filo roll from the cabinet. When it arrived it smelt terrible and I could see broccoli poking out of the end. Really? In a bacon roll? I cut the roll in half to find it contained overcooked reheated broccoli, carrot, and what seemed to be slimy overcooked reheated cabbage. First glance did not show any bacon at all. To find that I had to completely split the pasty in quarters to find three small cubes of what appeared to be ham. In the other half was the same slimy mess and two cubes of whatever the meat was. If I had wanted vegetables I would have ordered them, I loved properly cooked vegetables, but what I wanted this time was a bacon roll.

Red Beret - be a bit more honest in the labelling of your food. This should have been called a vegetable and bacon roll (if it was indeed bacon). What ever it was, it was a total rip off.

One of the best, most consistent cafes in the Nelson/Tasman region; the food just has that 'X factor' - it's made with real skill. The service is friendly, and the coffee is outstanding. A real asset to Motueka.

Love the choice of food. Tastes as good as it looks. Coffee is the best in Nelson region (plus you can choose your cup size). Super little gift shop out the back. Friendliest staff you will ever meet. Just top rate. Well worth driving from Nelson just for the experience.
