Review Mt. Eden Village Fish Shop - Mount Eden

Da P (D P)
Came here and ordered Fish and Chips (FOD option only $10!!) and a side of Calamari (6 pieces). Service was friendly and average pace (waited under 10 minutes). The amount you get for the $10 F&C deal is awesome. We shared the Calamari and the F&C between two people and it was definitely enough. Fish from the counter looks fresh and they also sell housemade fish patés , salads and pies (which I am yet to try). Teeny tiny minus for the price of the sauces because all they provide is complementary malt vinegar. E.g. Watties Chutney would be an extra $3. Would definitely come back ☺

Great fish and chips, they were hot, fresh and delicious, what a great shop. The batter on the fish and the crispy chips, and the prices were great.

Outstanding fish and chips. We placed a phone order for a seafood basket (snapper, prawns, calamari, chips, with aoli) It was ready in 15 minutes. Absolutely delicious. Crunchy batter and crispy chips. Price very reasonable : just over $36 for two people. Will definitely be back.

I am writing this review based on 3 aspects. Price, Food, Service Price: For a fresh fish store in Mt eden it is reasonably priced. However for what it is id say its relatively on the higher side. But you do pay for quality and that is what you recieve quality! Food: Ive tried the Snapper, Battered Mussels and Chips - fish was excellent id reccomend the fish. The chips arent as crispy as youd like them to be but they do taste nice. The battered mussels are quite small. I am not sure where you possibly found mussels of that size but they where quite small. Service: service for the store is to be expected of a fish and chip store. Would I come back again! I would come back for the fish! That was the highlight of the visit for me. Its a nice clean establishment and is well maintained. Everything is displayed in front of you, so you do see what you are getting which is always a bonus.

I had a fish burger and chips. Great fish burger and great crispy chips. Some reviews complain about the price. I have thrown up from supermarket fish that was clearly not great and fresh. I rather pay a bit more for good quality, fresh fish!! Thanks - I will be coming back!!

Mt Eden Village Fish Shop always supply me with beautiful fish. Super fresh and their smoked salmon has a terrific flavour to it. Never disappoints!

This is a fantastic fish shop. The fish is fresh & treated with care. Great fish & chips. There is passion in what they do. If in Mt Eden definitely try this place for your fish.

Nice fish and really good chips. The people running the place are really nice and it doesn't feel like your usual fish and chips shop
Tom Wilson
Fish is always nice and fresh with thin batter. Kumara chip are great. Really friendly customer service.
Thomas Wills
Iconic historic fish shop. Excellent service. Fresh, smoked and expertly cooked fish and seafood. Takeaway or eat there.

I love this place! Super fresh seafood, yummy fish and chips and amazing staff who know a lot about seafood :)

I had the gurnard and chips with some calamari rings and everything was delicious. . The gurnard and calamari were so fresh and the chips were crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. It wasn't too oily and the batter was thin and crispy. The staff in the shop were also really friendly.

We have had the Snapper fish n chips combo with salad , it was perfectly batter fried, the fish was perfectly cooked and was soft and delicious. The combo for one has enough quantity and make you feel fuller.
#foodreview #fishnchips

Battered Mussels need less time as they cook so fast! Apart from that nice fish and chips !! Its what you want when looking for a fish and chip shop. Price is obviously relevant to Auckland so what more do you expect.. Nice staff, clean place. would go again

Im gonna give it a 5 even though the mussels needed a minute less the fish is AMAZING its fresh as and super tasty and cooked perfect!!!!! And I know fish alright..

Been here twice and the most consistent thing is the staff. Friendly, helpful and courteous. Nice. Fish is pretty good (to be expected since it is a fish shop) but the rest after that sort of takes a direction toward ordinary. Needs a revamp on the menu and not just let the Fish and friendly staff carry it. Something missing but not sure what. Too pricey to just "make great fish".

Ok but pretty expensive. One bit of squid was 2.70! Fish was nice but I literally got around 12 chips for my order and they weren't amazing so meh- I'd prob go elsewhere next time. Staff were very nice but tbh I was disappointed with paying 15 bucks for what I received.

So, first I should mention the reason we went into this shop was because we saw the large 'award winning chips' in their shop window multiple times as we walk past every day, so you have to consider my expectations for the chips were quite high.
I've been twice in 2017 and each time the chips have been different. The first time they were grossly dripping with old grease and were just soggy and slimy ): we were extremely unimpressed with the chips, even more so because of the expectations we had. The fish itself was succulent, fat and tender, you could just tell it was a very fresh fillet of fish. Only thing was that it was the fish itself that was good quality and cooked well, the batter itself was nothing special like any old chinese takeaway fish and chips shop except this place is waaaaay more expensive.
The second time I went the chips were not as awfully greasy (an improvement!) but were quite bland, I don't know if the potatoes weren't the best that season or if they used frozen chips but they tasted as bland as frozen chips and were not very crispy ):. The fish was about the same as the first time.
The staff were friendly though, and helped explain the texture and flavour of some fish I've never tried (such as monk fish) and they have quite the array of fresh and house smoked seafood in the cabinets you could try.
Whenever somebody asks me if the fish and chips here are good, I can't say it's bad, but I also can't particularly recommend it as good...

Loved this cute little Fish & chips store! it is pricey from your average f&c eateries but it's definitely worth it, their raw fish was so delicious, all the herbs and flavors was perfect :) Can never go wrong with quality food... Yummmmmm

It's a small fish shop that offers a fairly good range of fish and chips. Always tried beer battered snapper and chips or crumbed snapper and chips. I've also tried Kumara chips which taste like frozen chips. Fish tastes average, bigger portions. Service OK.

Love this place. Been coming here for many years and the fish and chips are consistently great. Also one of the cleanest Fish and Chip shops around.

They have a whole range of fish for sale and also specialty house smoked salmons etc.

I would say the chips aren't the best and have potential to be a lot better

Came here a while back following a loss to one of the local rugby teams during the season. Lost just by 2 points, anyways grabbed some good ol' $5 chips and 6 Scallops. Despite it being a winter at that time, it sure reminded me of the summer where all the great memories of the sunny days came to be. The chips were nicely done and fresh, bot too greasy and the scallops? Well I can't argue, the damn best scallops there are.

The people there were really kind and friendly, despite it being a takeaway shop you would get the ordinary greeting. The waiting time was usual, just like any other takeaway shop.

Inside they also have a display of fresh fish for sale. So whenever you want to get some of the real deal, this is the place to be. It's got the original layout of any takeaway store, for example the main thematic colour is white with a little dining area outside which makes it a plus.

Friendly staff. The battered oysters were the best here before. I used to order 15 oysters almost 3x a week for 3 months. The same coating as the one in Bobby's fish and chips in tauranga which was Mind blowing.
However, it changed. Probably because management changed, but it was so sad not to have them anymore. The oyster batter changed. I tried to go there again but they hand me overcooked oysters. It became like any other fish and chips.
Lissy Fehnker
Amazing smoked salmon, a must try! Also really nice smoked fish cakes. Really friendly staff and clean store. Can always count on them to have fresh seafood too.
Jarrod RF Biddulph
Really amazing fish and chips! The fish is always very fresh and lightly battered. The chips are easily some of the best in Auckland. The serving sizes and reasonable considering the price but you certainly get what you pay for compared to slightly cheaper Chinese fish and chip shops.
Connie Stone
Beautiful fish and chips!! Fairly expensive but when the quality is that good it's worth it if you ask me.

Lovely, fish is wonderful and comes in a box instead of wrapped so the batter stays fresh.
Comes with lemon as well which I like.

They also do amazing Tartare sauce!!!

Edit: they have up’d their prices and down’d their portion sizes 🤦🏼‍♀️ honestly still amazing fish and chips but it’s really too much money for what’s on offer.
Bernice Yap
Ordered a 2 pieces of fish, chips and 6 prawns for about $30. Not the freshest really - infact, one of the fish was hard to chew; plastic like. Prawns were slightly burnt. Ironically, the chips were the star!
Michelle Hwang
It was not the first time to be there. I really enjoy their deep fried snapper fish even it is selling at $ 8.70. Not a friendly price but very reasonable. Fresh, juicy inside and crispy skin outside. Also friendly staff and clean store.
Frank Lin
The prices are on the high side. You could get more for less elsewhere i.e. half the price.

The chips tasted pretty average, some pieces were burnt!

The fish did taste nice.

The staff were fairly nice to deal with.
Becky D.
Have our Friday night fish and chips from here quite often. Quality of the fish is excellent, nicely cooked with just the right amount of batter. Not the cheapest meal but would rather pay a bit more and actually get some fish and not a huge lump of batter as in some establishments. Service is a little erratic, we always order ahead and sometimes hard to understand over the phone, occasionally our order is wrong but we consider this the best option in Mt Eden.
Ed
Prices are so-so.
Erring on the higher side of things given the fact that they're literally just made of cheap fish and potato chips.

Quite clean and nice location. Wouldn't go out of my way to come here though.

Food: 6/10
Service: 3.5/5
Ambience: 3/5
Value: 3/5
Overall: 15.5/25
Edmond Shen
I come here once in awhile for fish and chips and what keeps me coming back is definitely the fish they use. They claim to have the freshest fish in Auckland and there's no doubt that the claim is true. The chips are also quite enjoyable, crisp, thick and lightly salted.
Macy
You get what you pay for. The prices are somewhat higher but in return, you get excellent quality food that is perfectly cooked. The wait isn't too long either. There are a couple of seats inside if you need them. It's our local, and luckily for us, the best.
Gentlepig
Sometimes location makes it difficult for establishments like these - the food is undoubtedly good, just not amazing and thus it would seem that you don't get your moneys worth here as the prices are a bit on the high side. In these establishments its either quality or quantity (I've rarely been to many that have both) but in this case at least you get quality.
Stephen Galt
Excellent fish and chips. Slight disappointment is a lack of seasoning on the fish and chips. Salt sachets are given though but its not quite the same.
Grace Sifa
a bit pricey but the food is nice.. the smoked salmon always hits the spot and the chips ever so yummy.. usually grab the fish of the day and even had the basket last time.. the oyster was quite good .. hard for parking however as on main road by lights
Wendy Zhou
We have been oversea for last two years and this place still serves the best food as I remembered! Exactly same! Best place for real deal smoking salmon also love their fish chips!! Best 20$ you can possible get! You won't disappointing believe me!
Dimitrios Konstantopoulos
Delicious. Need to ask for well done chips though, as they are a bit conservative with cooking time.
Fish is always as it should.
The place is spotless, super hygiene.
Tuna to die for.
Prices OK.
One of my favourites, I always pop in when I am around.
John Kemp
I like the fish and chips wrapped up newspaper it was enjoyable so enjoyable we did struggle to get to the end love it and would I return? that's a Brian jonson...Yes,yes,yes...@apples24.
Brought 3 huge fish heads snapper and some chip there you go...fish n chips going to enjoy very much
Rose
Fisherman basket of value
I like seafood they serve here
Don't know what to make of smoked fish samosas (benefit of the doubt given, and maybe I will purchase one day)
Happy to see smoked roe, one of the most delicious things on our earth
0.5 stars under 5 because I had already read the magazines available, and the tartare sauce was a little heavy on the capers (plz mind the cap)
Alecia Browne
Disappointing fish and chip meals. Our family have been going to Fish shop for quite sometime however hot is not good as it used to be. Not impressed.
David Arthur
I went there for the first time last night. I saw all the awards they have won on the wall so I was expecting something great. I was very very disappointed. $12.70 for a small piece of snapper and some chips!! The snapper was dry and the chips were very average. I can't understand why they have won awards!
Torsten
I was rather unimpressed with the service and the quality of goods. Mediocre at best
Brittany Reekie
Portion sizes were ridiculous for the price. As a hungry university student from the epsom campus, splashing out on lunch was a big mistake in this case. We would have understood if the quality was outstanding but it was overly average. I don't think I would recommend this store to anyone.
Mercedes Raymond
Been here a few times now, absolutely worth it. They put lemon in with your order, it's fresh ingredients, cooked just right, friendly service, even have a cool loyalty card (sugar card), they have salt and pepper sachets to help yourself:), it's a little bit more in price than the normal Asian fish n chip shop but so worth it !:) and of course they have extras like fresh fish to buy and smoked salmon :) yummmy! I don't think they are open too late sometimes? Guess they have to sleep lol:) I'm going there for lunch now!:)
Tim Woolfield
This is my regular fish shop. I usually order the terakihi but regardless of what fish, or the fish cakes, it has always been fresh and cooked well.
The fish always looks fresh in the display cabinet.
The batter is usually pretty good. I try and avoid the peak times as they do get really busy. But they seem well organized behind the counter.
The staff are very pleasant and obliging.
Sonya Simpson
We usually love the fish n chips here but tonight were so disappointed. What has changed!? The staff were still lovely but the batter has gone from Yorkshire pud yummy to thin see through yuck, & the potato fritters wafers. Our oysters & fish were puny & it was a waste of a treat night. An eighth of a lemon slice to top it all off. Such a shame. The food has completely changed to tasteless, stingy, overpriced fare.
Ash
Ive been going here since i remember, and still LOVE IT!
I'm not sure about the below comments, but i have realised since the change of owners the menu has more variety and also the prices are cheaper!! which is a plus.
The staff are always friendly and the fish and chips never disappoints.
Anna Holtom
Thought would pop in for a mid week treat but was disappointed. Very pricey at $25 for two fish & chips and certainly not worth that. The crumbed snapper and tarakihi was Just average. Chips not crispy enough.
Will head back to my reliable, better option on Sandringham road next time, much better!
Sue Wood
We haven't been here for a few weeks, but the fish and chips here are still yummy! The fish is fresh, the batter is crispy and golden, and the chips are crispy outside with plenty of potato inside.

At other shops I never eat the batter as it is usually thick & stodgy, but at this shop I eat the lot. I've found the staff friendly and helpful, and you can get free forks, tomatoe sauce and vinegar.

The shop we used to go too doesn't hold a candle to the fish and chips here, so this is the only place I get fish and chips. .

To ensure your takeaways are at their best make sure you eat them within ASAP. We go down to the park to eat ours. Leaving any takeaways wrapped up for longer than about 5-10 mins means the heat builds up moisture inside the wrapping.

They also sell fresh and smoked fish, and we've tried their smoked salmon fish cakes and they're yummy too.

Wow!!! Is this the best you have to offer New Zealand? Metro 2010-2012 best fish and chips winner?!!! As avid fish and chips fans we have been on the constant hunt for great fish and chips since moving from the UK last year. We've tried around a dozen now and made a point of looking for the most famous chip shop in every town/city that we've been to.

I'm afraid that this chippy and every other chippy we've tried doesn't come close to even the most below par chippies in the UK. It's mainly because of the chips (NZ only seems to deep fry frozen McCains instead of using fresh potatoes) but the batter on the fish is always soggy to.

The only thing that got this meal a second star was because the fish was relatively nice. But the batter was terrible so it really didn't make much of a difference.

We've vowed to give up our search now. At least you do good pies and burgers!!!
Sue Wood
We purchased fish & chips from here on Monday, Auckland Anniversary day and they were so good we went back the next day for another lot as we were in the area. The fish was fresh & moist, and the batter thin, crispy & tasty. The slices of lemon were a bonus. An overseas visitor with us on Monday said it was the best fish & chips she'd ever tasted and she is over particular about any fish she eats.
Sonrisa Bella
This was my best fish and chips experience ever! My friends and I ordered snapper and chips for takeaway, and even after driving it home and serving it about 20 minutes later, it was absolutely delicious! The batter was thin, it was not too greasy (despite being deep fried!), and the chips were wonderful. We devoured our meal, and I can't wait to go back again.

The staff were also very friendly - I'm sorry others have had not so positive experiences. I'm wondering if someone is trying to blackball this restaurant in favour of others in the city. I urge anyone that hasn't tried this place to go see and taste for yourself!
Cath Marriott
Very shocked to see these other reviews as I have always had positive experiences at this Fish Shop.

I always find the girls working there very pleasant and helpful as they seem to have an eye for different cooking techniques for the fresh fish.

I have been going there for around 5 years now and nothing much has changed, I see the new owner now has a variety of fish on display which is always fresh and I think they smoke their own fish on sight! He is also very friendly.

I think there was a bit of a fall in the quality of fish and chips at the beginning of the year but they are back to usual, delicious crispy fresh fish and chips - I will never go anywhere else.
Dave Goldstein
Ugh, I unfortunately, regretadably, and sadly have to agree with the previous review. This USED to be the best shop in the city, and who cared what it cost $$$ - it was THAT good, and the vibe of the place, the staff, etc was all just as superb as the food.

All that seems to have changed.

I think the quality of fresh fish in the counter is still very good, and I can't say for certain, but the prices may even be a tad lower. However, the friendly staff is gone, the cooked offerings are very lacking, and I just don't think I will go back.

An icon of the city appears to have been lost. It's a sad day.
Adam Wood
The food is amazing!!!!

I have been eating here for about 3 years now, and every year it gets better!
Since the new owners have come this place is still the same! With their best fish and chips. The staff are friendly the fish is as fresh as it gets.
I always recommend this place to my friends and family and i still do, it's the fish and chips shop in the town that is the best!!

You just need to go in and try it out!!
It wont let you down! it's the best!
Hannah
Originally, I'd rate this off the scale amazing from my first experience May 2011. Perfect battered fresh melt in your mouth fish with nice chips to match with a light sprinkle of salt and extra salt and lemon slices just in case. Well after the sad change over of owners/managers what have you, the place has lost its reputation. My partner and I LOVED the place but won't go near it ever again. Just recently got the same old snapper and chips May 2012 and its not even CLOSE! . Flavorless, thickish greasy batter.. and chips are just meh.. no salt pre sprinkled. Sadly won't be returning after that episode. Makes me sad cuz last years visit was the best fish n chip we'd ever had. And we've had our fair share being from the UK and travelling plenty
Deb Clarke
I googled and rung this place for 5 pieces of fish and chips.
$29 later we got the meal.
Soggy as fatty.
Fish without the batter was nice with fresh bread.
Minimal chips.
The food was all wrapped sitting onto of lemon pieces and salt sachets, thus the salt was of no use.
Really disappointed
Josh Thomson
The Best. Ever.

It's pricey, but you get what you pay for. Golden chips, beer batter, and the freshest, freshest fish.

It's a fish shop that doesn't smell like fish - it's that clean.

Take a date there, and watch the sunset with a beer and Mt. Eden Village fish and chips from the top of the mountain.

Perfect
Vivien @ KJAS Blog
Delicious fish to be had here as it's fresh and excellently cooked. It's renowned as one of the best fish and chips in Auckland and for good reason. While the price might not be as low as your local fish and chip takeaway on the corner, that's because the fish it uses is far superior. I find a lot of takeaways overdo the fish and they look kind of burnt and are a bit soft. What I love about the fish and chips here is that the fish outsides are merely golden and still crisp and the chips are chunky. There isn't as much oil on your hands at the end either, which is a testament to their skills, and also good news since too much oil is bad for health. They serve it with a wedge of lemon for optimal taste. You can sit in the store and people watch or take it somewhere else to eat. If you're a student, there's even a special for you if you show your ID, which is great for after school snacks or afternoon tea. All in all, excellent fish and chips! Highly recommend for a premium experience.
Danny
The Mount Eden Village Fish Shop might be a little pricy - but you're paying that premium for the some of the best fish and chips in Auckland. According to a study by Campbell LIve, this place has the freshest fish in Auckland. Whether you believe that or not, you can definitely taste the difference.

I invariably go for the beer battered snapper, but I've heard their burgers are really good too. Their beer batter is excellent and makes for some really delicious (and not so greasy) fried fish. Pair the fish with a scoop of kumara chips and you will definitely be coming back for more!
