Review Gala Cafe - Mount Eden

Terry Chandler
Our regular family breakfast location!! A hidden gem and well worth a visit. The staff are friendly and helpful, the meals are well priced, presented beautifully, and arrive in a timely manner. There is indoor and outdoor seating available, with running water in the background. A must visit cafe and in our opinion 5 stars is not enough!

Went back after several months away as got very sick of the same menu being served every day for YEARS! Was pleasantly surprised. Now under new management the place is humming, the coffee is great and the cabinet food options have been extended. My only disappointment was that the breakfast menu has not changed much...although an all day breakfast has been added and a couple of things deleted from the menu. Someone needs to garner the strength to climb up and revamp that menu board hanging high on the wall! I'll be back...

Good coffee, friendly staff. Always welcome with a smile. Food is excellent quality. Love the bistro salad, bacon and eggs. Recommended for breakfast and or lunch. A++

Nice coffee, but with the concrete floors, metal furniture and open plan layout it's quite noisy and hard to be heard when busy.

Good service. Small peak hour delay. Clean. Substantial portions. Clean. Price competitive. Great omelette with filler options.

Many healthy options which are great for lunch. The cafe has mainly small table for 2 to 4 people with a few sofa chairs as well.

Excellent coffee, excellent staff. Got me hooked on their almond flat whites - I'm there 5 days a week!

Lots of hype, metro cafe of the year... I was I'm afraid a little underwhelmed. Loved the decor, but the food wasn't amazing. Just good. But more expensive than most...

Really good food and the cashier was patient (because I was indecisive) and recommended the fried rice and dumplings... hummm really yammyyy. Defined recommend...

Thoroughly enjoyed their toasted chicken toasties! Not to mention their coffee :)

Nice café! Try the Eggs Benedict if you haven't already. With mushrooms, bacon or salmon.

Liked the service and the coffee. Also they have a newspaper to read, not many cafes do that anymore.

Great cafe with many lunch time food options to choose from :)

Great service, lovely staff and yummy food. A really great option if you’re looking for a menu the kids will like. And they even do half portions! Highly recommend this cafe for families

Wow what a change. Very inviting and attentive staff. The eggs benedict are to die for. In house cured salmon bagel was so tasty and the new recipe for the hot chocolate is yummy. Love the new decor. The whole cafe is much more welcoming. Recommend a visit.

I'll go a long way for a good Allpress coffee... but I'm lucky to work around the corner from Gala, one of the best cafes in Auckland.

Gala cafe rocks my world!! Awesome food and great coffee made by beautiful staff that care. The head chef is passionate about food, and this shows in his presentation and flavors. Go and enjoy!

Great hidden lil cafe tucked away amongst offices in Mt Eden.
Well made espresso coffee and tasty cafe foods.
Reasonable amount of choices. Prices are a lil steep and portion sizes aren’t the biggest but food is still top quality.
Staff are always super friendly especially the young asian guy who is always on the front counter.
Plenty of seating inside and out to enjoy foods and coffee.
Worth a try if you in the area looking for a good cup of coffee

Went to Sunday brunch here where should I begin. We were the only ones there so we weren't sure if it was even open but once inside the staff were super friendly and inviting. The building was very open with a high ceiling and cute decor.

The food was amazing, I ordered the French toast and my partner ordered the gala big breakfast, portion size is excellent and the price is slightly less in comparison to other cafes in the area. The French toast left me speechless as I was shoveling food into my mouth the whole time I have never had a better French toast. It could probably do with a bit more bacon but I just love bacon. The big breakfast in my partners word was "very tasty and well seasoned" when I asked him if he would change anything he said maybe having a different type of bread instead of toast but he obviously missed on the menu that you can choose what type of bread you want with multiple options including gluten free.

The drinks we had were a creaming soda thick shake and an iced chocolate which were both above our expectations and I shall be returning for at least another thick shake.

Overall I'm so glad I found this cute little hidden cafe and now that know it's around the corner from my house I shall be visiting regularly. 10/10

In a bit of a scramble on Sunday morning and was surprised that Gala was open. Needing something to kick start my day I hooped into Gala looking for something small to mend my stomach before a usual large Sunday lunch occasion. Pleasantly surprised at the fact that this place was open in a relatively remote area (Certainly by café standards )
Had a cinnamon bun, the bun had a good texture while packing a nice cinnamon flavor. Was a fantastic snack on my way to LIFE.
Showstopper: Cinamon Bun was quite nice.
Overall Grade: B

It was my second time buying an Iced Chocolate instead of my regular Hot Chocolate, but I must say buying the Iced chocolate couldn't have been better because it was ultra hot outside and didn't feel like drinking something warm.

The staff over are just so kind and friendly, bright smiles pretty much filled up the room and the waiting time on the iced choc. wasn't even that long either.

Step inside and it feels like you're in the future. Maybe it's because the primary colour inside the cafe is white. The chairs look fancy though and there is this big board on the wall. At first I thought it was just part of the picture and looking closer it was actually the menu, very awkward indeed hahaha. Anyways, a great cafe though.

The service of the wait staff are exceptional. Extremely friendly and caring.

Went in with baby, and the staff started wiping down the baby stool with care. Thought out the course cheery and happy. Bringing light to our morning day.

Environment: 4/5
Food Quality: 3.5/5
Food Quantity: 4.5/5
Service: 6/5
Price: $20-$25pp

A nice place. Great staff, and service. Coffee is All Press so is pretty good and locally roasted, double shot standard which is as it should be. Will definitely be back.

Food was really average.
Staff were very cold.
False advertising.
The menu they had on the blackboard was advertised as $15 but when I went to pay they said it was $18. No where was there $18 on the blackboard. When questioned why it was $18 instead of $15, the cashier said the prices on the blackboard are just indications, and are subject to change(apparently when they want) and not the actual prices.

We ordered the butter chicken and corn fritters stack(if you can even call 2 fritters a "stack"). The the bottomed corn fritter was cut in half, to which the staff claim is to see if the fritter is cooked. Never have I been to a cafe where the fritter is cut in half to see if it's cooked, then placed back onto the plate to be served.

Be warned of the false advertising. Especially the blackboard menu items. Staff and management were very defensive towards my feedback. What was frustrating is they have no rationale to back their defence. They are just bad at taking constructive feedback.

Even a 1 star is too high. If I could I would give this place no stars.

Great menu and pleasant and attentive staff meant a recent birthday brunch was most enjoyable. The food is fresh and inviting with a large selection to cater for all tastes. The Reuben sandwich was full of flavour and the Fish and Chips were beautifully presented with crispy batter and hot crunchy chips. Good coffee too. Worth a visit!!

Forget the burbs, head to the city. Nestled in Mt Eden, a stone throw away from the city Centre, this is a fantastic cafe with a lively atmosphere. It has an extensive yet simple and we'll delivered menu with a great selection of drinks and cabinet cakes and slices. The personal touch was the owner asking how our meals were and how he could improve it. He even made us milo with condensed milk on request! Well worth the trip to enjoy this wonderful experience!
Thought For Food
We've been coming here for a couple of years now on and off and while the service has improved a bit under new management this place is still way over priced. The acoustics inside are terrible. The cabinet food is dry. The food from the menu is usually tasty however for the same amount spent you could be having lunch at a nice, licensed restaurant with a view. The coffee has always been horrible but that's just my opinion. Like I say though it's under new management so perhaps there will be some improvements. We'll see.

My friend and I went there as we had purchased a deal voucher - what a regret! The cafe location seems odd as it is randomly located off the road and in a business complex - no nice views just the view of the work places around. We ordered our breakfast and whilst we waited we order a coffee each (this was extra on top off the voucher deal). When we were brought the coffees and tasted them they were very weak and extremely milky. These 'coffees' were not up to any decent standard, so we ask if we could have the coffees remade. The waiter said sure and took the coffees away. The lady who was making the coffees kept giving us dirty looks. This made me feel very uncomfortable and at one stage when I looked at her she gave me a 'steer down' (by this I mean I looked at her and she looked at me and kept looking at me with a dirty look on her face for quite some time until I looked away). Both myself and my friend felt extremely uncomfortable feeling as if we had done something wrong by asking for new coffees (as the ones we had received tasted like warm milk). Whilst we waited we received our breakfast. It was average - (eggs benedict) lacking any greenery/garnish. After we had finished eating our breakfast we had still not received our coffees. We continued waiting and after a while we decided we needed to leave as we could not wait around all day. When we approached the counter to give the deal coupon, the lady had still not made the coffees. I told her do not worry about the coffees now as we had finished our breakfast and were about to leave. She said fine. We gave the coupon and were about to leave when she said we owed $8.40 for the coffees. Obviously were we not happy to pay this and explained why. After a long discussion that was going nowhere, we proceeded to leave the cafe. The lady followed us and said "no one leave my shop without pay". We further continued to explain that we did not agree to pay because we returned the coffee we were originally given and did not receive a replacement. As we left she followed us outside onto the road saying she will phone the police. I thought that was a wonderful idea so went back to the shop for her to do so. Once back at the shop I asked her to call the police but she refused and said "don't you have phone? you phone police" and she continued to demand money from us, very rudely in a strong broken English accent at times I found hard to understand. By then we had had enough and left for the second time. She followed us again; down two streets until we 'lost her'. This was an extremely disappointing and time consuming experience. I highly recommend not going there. The voucher deal advert for the cafe boasted great reviews from 2010 - It makes me wonder if the business has changed ownership since then, as there was nothing to boast about at his cafe.

It's a really nice place..

We didn't hear about this cafe before, even we live in Downtown, so it's pretty close to our place.

Until now - 2 things I've tried here were - Steak Sandwich(medium rare) and Tokio Lunchbox, also I had a chance to taste 'North Indian Eggs' how they called and I was really surprised.

Steak was one of the best I've had in Auckland, it was really delicious and juicy.
Special recipe for Masala Eggs was excellent as well, i didn't know it could be so delicious!

Good atmosphere, very friendly staff!
Me and my girlfriend enjoyed our food and coffee here as well.
Hope to come here soon again and more often.

Clean fresh decor and a busy vibe greeted us as we were shown to our table by an attentive waiter.
All press coffee masterfully prepared was brought to the table quickly and we settled in to the difficult task of trying to decide what to order from the breakfast menu.
My partner chose the poached eggs and I the north Indian eggs (mother inlaws recipe) with a side of gravlax and one of portabello mushrooms.
The poached eggs were faultless and the Indian twist to mine was devine, the gravlax just right and the mushrooms perfectly cooked.
We don't often indulge in two coffees but they were so good we did and with an afghan biscuit.
The most expensive item on the breakfast menue was eggs bennie at $18 making a meal here exceptional value for money.
We can't wait to come back.

Great menu, filled with options that scream 'flavour'! I chose the "Gala Spa Salad" which included generous amounts of tender Steamed Chicken, with Green Tea Noodles, and Cress with loads of Dressing, and they'd run out of one ingredient, so thoughtfully replaced it with beetroot and ginger.
The food left me feeling healthy and invigorated.

The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating to our requests. My 3 year old enjoyed her side of salmon, and a banana! It's not really the place to bring children though, I have to say.

Easy parking in the weekends was a bonus.
