Review Coen Sushi & Donburi - Mount Eden

Aryaman Parulkar
Every time I come here its such a good time. All the food is fresh and you know its been made with so much aroha and care. My donburi was literally steaming hot and fresh as it came out. I couldn't recommend this place more if youre looking for fresh authentic sushi!

I've been coming here for years and absolutely love this place! They have so many options for sushi, a great range of vegetarian, chicken and others. Absolutely delicious. Unfortunately, I can't have gluten anymore and therefore I can only have raw fish. Hopefully, one day soon they'll have more gluten-free options so I can come back to my fave place.

The Sushi at Sushi Wa Kim is delicious with a wide variety of sushi to choose from, which is amazing. Not only is the sushi very delicious, but it is also very fresh, adding to its appeal. The service is great. However, the cashier was a bit stingy with the wasabi. I love dining in, but there is limited seating available. Besides this, Sushi Wa Kim is excellent.

I never leave reviews, but I’m a major sushi fan & this place does THE best sushi I’ve ever had around Auckland. They do no skimp on salmon & avocado either!! Soooooo delicious
Rosaria Price

Consistently some of the best sushi I've had in Auckland.

The sushi is well made and a each piece is a good size. It is always fresh and a reasonable price. Staff are polite and friendly, and the small resturant is and always clean. A nice place to eat in ...or take away. This is one of my favourite local places to buy sushi.

I can’t rate this place enough. The sushi is fresh and plentiful. Lots of different flavours and so reasonably priced (between $1.50-4/piece). Hot and cold options. Lots of vegetarian options too. Pieces are jammed with fresh ingredients, so you get heaps of salmon. Lots of filled Inari options. Took a pic of my empty container ‘caused I wolfed it down so quickly! Couldn’t rate it more.

The sushi pieces here are massive. The salmon is fresh. It's perfectly seasoned. And they have just enough ready so there is heaps of choice but you know it hasnt been sitting there for ages. What more could you want?

I went to this sushi joint at least once a week in 2016 and first half of 2017. Than they had some major renovations and it just hasn’t been the same. The sushi from the cabinet doesn’t taste as fresh anymore. The donburi is still yum,

The new renovations make the place look crisp and neat! It has a really cute and pretty seating area.

They have gone through renovation. The aesthetics of the decor and renovation looks way better than before. However the placement of furniture is not functional. The service is really good. The price is about the same as before. The sushi isn't as good as it use to be. The fillings inside the sushi use to be larger and I felt like it wasn't as fresh.

A variety of delicious sushi pieces to choose from. A little bit expensive but maybe that was my fault. Friendly staff and a lively environment.

This place is so cute! I got the salmon salad and it was delicious. Such a decent amount and everything was super fresh. I tried three pieces of their sushi as well and that was also super yummy. I would come back again :)

Was on my way to another restaurant but popped in here instead with a friend as it looked appealing.
Food was a little expensive but very fresh & tasty - happy we chose this.
I had the bento box - all elements were tasty. Even the grapes & orange which are not always included but provided a nice finish.
My friend tried the prawn donburi - also nice.

I love Coen! I come here very regularly to grab sushi for my lunch, it's always fresh and they have a great selection. Staff are friendly. Only eaten off the menu a few times, tofu salad is lovely and don buri and bento boxes are standard. It's not Ebisu, it's not trying to be the best sushi joint in Auckland, but I'm never disappointed. It's a cute, friendly, little local sushi joint. Very kid friendly! And miso complimentary if you dine in.

I used to work around the corner and whenever any of us needed a quick, tasty, fairly cheap meal - we always went here. The sushi was delicious - fresh and fast. The service was friendly and polite. I usually ordered the Pork and Chicken Katsu Don - Delicious. After moving from that workplace, I REALLY miss the amazing food here. So I go and get the katsu don when I can...but on the most recent trip I have found that they have changed their a la carte menu - which is a little more complicated than before. The service is also a little different. But the food tasted great as awlays - cannot complain.

The restaurant was empty tonight at 6:30pm, while other surrounding joints were bustling... Probably the first sign of a bad experience to come. We made our way inside anyway, the guy at the counter stared at us without saying a word. I had to tell him we were after dinner before he handed us the menus. I mean, what else would we be there for? After all, they ARE a restaurant. We sat down and still he ignored us. We walked up to the counter and still ignored us. We stood there awkwardly before he acknowledged us.

We ordered the teriyaki fish don, garden salad, a tofu side dish and chicken yakisoba. Food was ok. Wasn't great but i definitely wouldn't say it was bad.

Side note: while we were eating, two customers came in and sat down. The guy didn't even greet them. They eventually got up and walked out. Very awkward. Seriously can't understand how he thinks this is a way to run a business. My friend made a comment to him about his service and he was completely rude and argued back to her. Shame on you.

Amazing food. Best donburi Iv had in Auckland and the chicken kara age is mouth watering. My girlfriend and I come here on a regular basis and the food is always consistently delicious and the staff are always very friendly.

I like the sushi from here. It is a self-serve system where you can pick the sushi you want to eat! They have a range of sushi for you to choose from and each sushi is individually priced. My selection cost about $9.50 for 6 pieces which can feel a little pricey but it was worth it as I was able to enjoy a lovely custom sushi meal! The sushi was freshly presented. It was clear that time and effort was put into making them. The place is neatly designed, had a pleasant atmosphere and the staff had good customer service. I would definitely come again for their delicious sushi!

I came here with my 4 friends in the afternoon right after we went to Mt Mangawhai.
It was a sunny day. I did not know we have to go to the front and order and pay in advance.
we just sat anyway till the water came. once he saw us, he came right away and gave 5 menu books to us.
I was thirsty and ask him if I need to buy water such as P**P water bottle because I know some restaurants do like this.
He said it's complementary and let us know where water is. we could have helped by ourselves because at that time, the restaurant was really busy( all table inside was full with customers so we had to sit outside) but he served water with smile.
Normally, in my experience, when restaurants are very busy like this, servers say "it's free so help yourself" with no smile.
I've heard this comment already 3 times in Auckland restaurants.
when we order our foods at counter area, we took some time as we were 5. he still took our order with smile although there was a long queue behind us. food quality was great. Real good Japanese restaurant in Auckland!!!
our 5 dishes were served with very short interval so we could have all our meal at the same time. We enjoyed foods very much and when the waiter was not that busy, we did even have a chat :). the waiter was very kind I would say. everything I mentioned above is not a big thing, but I see lots of restaurants which do not even have like these simply and basic things. Smiling at customers? is the start and the end of business. :))))
----------------------------
I left my sunglasses at the restaurant and was about to catch the bus. however, the waiter was cleaning the table and found my sunglasses and ran to find our group and gave me my sunglasses back lol !!! thanks for that.!!!
I and my friends are really happy with foods and services we received. definitely good rate for this restaurant!!!en

*we had seafood yaki udon, teriyaki don, chicken katsu don with miso and sasimi salmon bento and tofu don.
I love tofu don and seafood yaki udon!!!! so yum!!!! xoxoxo I will visit agagin before I go back to Japan!!! :D

Came here one weeknight evening for a 'late' (after 8pm) dinner. We just wanted something quick and easy, no fuss.

The restaurant was empty and we ordered quickly, the service was a bit lacking - no real customer service just taking the order with no smile or really much care. We sat down and the waitress came over with only enough cutlery for 3 of us even though there were 4 of us seated. Three of the four meals arrived fairly quickly with the fourth trailing behind a bit - the counter lady had somehow mixed up the order and managed to think we had ordered something that wasn't even listed on the menu. After some talking and more money having to be paid we all got our meals.

The food was good, fresh and tasty. I had the chicken Donburi - very filling.

The lack of customer service and the menu mix up (I don't know how you could order something not on the menu) means that I probably won't make a return visit here.

I have had the worst service at this restaurant.
First of all, unfriendly counter staff thrown chopstick on dirty counter table saying you need to bring it to your table.

We have chosen a table which is untidy with previous customers plates etc because the table is close by window.

The same staff started cleaning other table which no customer seating and he didnt clean up ours.

We have waited quite a while but he never clean up our table until we have asked him.

Honestly this is the worst service I have ever experienced in New Zealand in the past decades time.

We came here quite late in the evening for a quick bite to eat. There were 4 of us, we were given 3 menus. We don't mind sharing, but this seemed strange nonetheless. I sent my boyfriend up to order our meal. I wanted the Tempura Udon Noodle meal. It was ordered as "Tempura", just as it is listed on the menu. We were only given 3 sets of cutlery. The strange trend continued.
Everyone's meals were brought over and looked great. I was served a small plate of tempura fried prawns and veg with a sauce. Nothing else.
I had to go to the counter and ask what had happened. The lady explained that she thought I wanted just a side order of tempura (that isn't listed anywhere on the menu) and then asked me to pay $6.50 extra for my noodles if I wanted them. So I paid $10 for four pieces of tempura fried squash, two fried beans and two fried prawns. I wasn't too impressed. I would normally have refused to pay the extra for their mistake but I was starving and it was getting late. I wish I hadn't paid the extra now as the noodles weren't the tastiest I've ever had.
I won't be going back to order the noodles again but I might visit again to have one of the donburi dishes that the rest of the table had.

What ? No review for Coen yet ?
I've been visiting this place since they opened last year because I love Japanese food. I think they're doing a great job. The service is always super cute and smiley, the food comes out fast and is very tasty.
The menu is slowly expanding, which is good because there is more to Japanese food than just sushi and don. I wish they could include some sweet stuff, I would love to get some red bean cakes or black sesame ice cream from them.

Whenever I need a quick relatively cheap bite at Mt Eden Shops, I usually head into Coen. They do both takeaway and dine-in, depending on whether I'm in a rush or just want someplace to sit at the time. The selection of sushi is remarkable and displayed in a cabinet along the left hand side wall, including gems such as scorched salmon nigiri and gyoza nigiri. I usually choose the pork or the pork and chicken katsudon and it's always delicious with fragrant rice often still hot hours in the takeaway bowl, meat with crispy outsides and flavourable insides wrapped in cooked egg, and a salad I actually surprisingly like. I usually dislike salads, especially salad dressings, but they use this really good stuff in moderation that I presume is Japanese mayonnaise. The service is always fast and food served with a courteous smile and a "Have a nice day!" when you step out the door. Price is okay as Mt Eden Shops stores are all pretty pricey for a meal, but the sushi a bit overpriced in my opinion. Still, they have some sushi selection that I haven't seen anywhere else. I've also found that when I dine in there is complimentary miso soup, which is pretty great. There are lots of tables and chairs inside and Japanese-themed decor which definitely complement the food if you're dining in. If you become a regular, ask for a loyalty card to get discounts for the fifth and tenth meals!

Coen Sushi and Donburi is located in the heart of the busy village of Mt Eden and has established itself as a popular casual local haunt to get Japanese food on a budget. The wide range of sushi is recommended as is the teriyaki chicken salad. Less successful were the fried dumplings. Open from morning to night it is a convenient place to get a quick bite or amore substantial bento box or curry meal.
