Review Smart India - Mount Maunganui

Christina May Cruickshank
My daughter opted for butter chicken for dinner tonight. We've never tried Smart India Mount Maunganui, so we thought we'd give them a go a change from Own Masala. The service I received was polite, professional, and friendly. It was late afternoon, so not many people dinning in when I ordered to go. Very quick and efficient, 10 minutes wait and we were good to go! Tasted great! Will be back again! šŸ˜‹

Every bit as good as I was expecting it to be and then some. Beautiful aromas as you enter and one of the warmest welcomes I've had anywhere. There's dual menus both vegan and non and they are both extensive. The food is delicious and the service is great. While I was there met a chap who had come from Tweed just to get some takeaway from here, that says it all really. Truly wonderful, highly recommended šŸ‘ my new favourite Indian . Flavour Flavour Flavour!

Tonight, our regular dining place was temporarily closed, leading us to opt for takeaways. We were delighted to discover smart india. The helpful staff, who assisted us in making a remarkable culinary choice. Their recommendation of the "Mushroom Mutter Korma," specially tailored to meet my dietary requirements as a vegan, exceeded all expectations. I must admit, it stands as one of the finest vegan curries I have ever had the pleasure of savouring.we look forward to returning and trying more options

We went for dinner after spending good time on beach. Obviously, we were tired and craving for good food. At entry, we were a bit surprised as there were not many people in the restaurant. However, the food served was great! Here are the details about the items we ordered: Paneer Tikka: one the best paneer tikka we had in New Zealand, it was juicy, smokey and well marinated. The balanced taste or mustard and other spices was awesome. Paneer Kadhai: It was awesome again, it had a smokey flavour and taste of whole spices was great! Daal tadka: I think it was mixed daal and the tadka was icing on the cake! The rich taste of Jira and garlic was there in every bite. Tandoori Roti: again perfect roti was served. It was hot, soft and most improtatnly did not taste like maida. The service and atmosphere was great too! It was a wonderful experience. Its a perfect place for anyone looking for authentic Indian food! I would visit again whenever in Tauranga or Mount Manganui. Cheers!

Omg! This place is superb! I mean cravings satisfied! I love their food! The chicken lollipop is seasoned perfectly, the tandoori chicken and so tender! And the chicken punjabi is the best! They have a great servers too! Shout out to satwiri! She's all smiles and very attentive! We'll get back here for sure on our next trip in Tauranga!! Oh. I almost forgot their cheese garlic nan is soooo freaking good! Edit: Their mango lassi omg! Must try! I had 2 and half glass ( *my husband only taste and i finished all)

We went here last night, wow what a pleasant surprise! The curries we ordered were both exquisite, we both shared what we had and they were delicious. The naan bread was lovely too, not too thick and doughy. The waiting staff were good too, with the chef coming to check we were enjoying our meals, also very friendly. It does not disappoint, good value to for money too!

Best Indian restaurant in Tauranga by far! The staff are super friendly and food is always really quick for both dine in and takeaway. I absolutely love the Lamb Biryani, Butter Chicken & Masala & my husband's go to's are Lamb Sagwala, Goat Vindaloo & Cheesy Garlic Naan. We come here every week or other week and are never disappointed. I would not bother going anywhere else in the Mount or Tauranga and would reccomend to anyone.

Honestly one of the best Indian restaurants Iā€™ve been to. The service was exceptional and incredibly friendly. Went with the mushroom masala which I thought was a bit of a rogue choice but ended up being phenomenal. Fantastic place and worth the visit. Big up.

We're so glad to have discovered this little place. It's casual, cozy, and friendly which makes it a comfortable place to be. And the food is wonderful! We had butter chicken that was really good, but our favorite was the chicken tikka masala which was exceptional! We love ordering it with a side of garlic naan or a roti, spooning it in along with some rice and eating it burrito style. Note: They have lunch specials that are a great bargain. Highly recommended.

Stopped in for some lunch on a cold day in the mount. Plesent little place. With friendly staff. I ordered a Dal Curry of the Lunch Special Menu. Great flavour. Decent portion . Their Garlic Nhan was a decent sizes and had lots of garlic.

Best Indian Iā€™ve ever tried. Loooove the flavours as well as the praneer and cheesy garlic naan. Have been coming here for over 2 years now and itā€™s still amazing for my tastebuds šŸ¤¤ā¤ļø best service too!

The culinary tastes were fantastic, but the rice serving with the mains was very small, about half of what would be expected with a mains dish. You are expected to buy extra rice,

Thank you so much for such a good adventure of food and great service i also like coming here ... Thank you so much once again

Oh my God!!! Worst experience of my life. Ordered one mains for myself and other two people wanted to eat something light. We got told that they wont serve the food and that we can go eat somewhere else unless we all order three mains. I asked what if the third person is full and does not want to eat, the manager got racist on us and said that its only Indian customers like us that cause an issue while other customers just easily agree to this condition.
The manager on duty Jagjeet Singh Bhangu was literally yelling at us and asking us to leave warning us that if we dont leave, something bad will happen. All this with restaurant full of customers. Two tables walked off looking at his behavior but the manager stated he does not care and that he is running a business not a charity. Stated he had 8 people sitting on a table yesterday and only 2-3 of them wanted to eat and thus he sent them all away.. wow!! Ridiculous policy ever.
What if the third person is allergic? Well the guy stated if you can prove the allergy, you would still have to order at least 2 curries as he believes 2 out of 3 people can not be allergic.
Omg!! What a dumb person.
The owner Sunil Dogra, was approached by another staff again and again to come out and talk to the customer, he refused and stated the customer can wait an hour or come back.
We were told to leave all reviews and complaints wherever we want.. as they have hundreds of people who can remove these bad reviews and replace them with good ones. brave!!!
Well done. Smart India?? Not so smart, I guess.
Kudos to review sites as well!

NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL
Worst Indian food in New Zealand. Servers are sweet and courteous but the service is extremely slow. No rice was served with the curries. Biryani is NOT BIRYANI its worst than fried rice. Lamb seekh kebab was frozen and not properly cooked. The staff has no knowledge about food waiters need to know what is being served on the menu. We only got a water bottle but no glasses to drink. No drink menu was given and no one bothered to ask about drinks. The curd used for mint chutney was tangy. Wasn't fresh. NOT RECOMMENDED AT ALL.

Fantastic service and the foot was delicious. Call us cliche but me and my partner ordered Chicken Tikka and butter chicken, highly recommend.

I would not recommend anyone this restaurant ..... unless you really donā€™t mind dealing with rude staff. Manager is a complete illiterate idiot who certainly have no idea what customer service is. Feel sorry for the owner who hired an idiot like this. Sorry but thatā€™s a big let down to the restaurant.
Anusha Chappidi
We came here the other day the first thing the staff tells us is you can order either lunch special or from the menu instead of greeting us. And tells us he wont bring lunch special if you order normal from menu. Too bad
Naman Taluja
Such a rude service.we ordered from mains and ordered only one lunch special the guy was like either you order all mails or all lunch. Lol what was that?
Brooke
Incredible service, and really awesome food. The service was fast and food quality was amazing, which is great when dining with a large group of people. Meals were reasonably priced and the ambience of the place was nice also.

Ate here twice now takeaway. I'm generally quite fussy.

I ordered the butter chicken and I have to say it's one of the best I have had really nice flavour and rich a lot of the other places I've gone too make the sauce too runny.

Also tried the Punjabi Chicken and it was better than the butter chicken great flavour, lovely and rich. Its definitely a favourite for me.

Wiki

We were in Mt. Maunganui looking for somewhere to have dinner. We quickly stumbled across Smart India. What a find! Service was quick and efficient and the staff were friendly. The food was excellent quality, the meat was fresh and well cooked, the sauces were seasoned well and the quantities were appropriate. It's a shame that this restaurant doesn't have a greater street profile. Therefore it tends to get missed by a lot of people passing by.

Worst Indian food I ever had. Ordered chicken biryani and Ā chicken tikka masala. Biryani was like chicken curry on rice, no flavor, no taste, at least should be concerned about the high charge of $18.50. Also chicken tikka masala was like adal makhni. No taste of masala, only sweet gravy. we used to get great Indian food in Auckland. Will think about 100 times before making any decision to buy an Indian food.

Delicious food! Best Indian in the Mount. Furthermore I have been to some rowdy BYO dinner parties here and the customer service is awesome. They do everything possible to ensure a good night for all.

One of my friend recommend me this place four years ago and i don't think there is better place for indian cuisine than this, i visit once a week because i cannot resist the food appeal from this place my whole family love this place ,,,,,,,, my kids love butter chicken and lamb saagwala and there is no match for it anywhere, staff is really nice some of them i know from years and they are very friendly and other food dishes and bread they offer are also very nice and it also for money one spend there. if anyone wants to try good indian food they must visit to this place.

Visited here two days ago. Ordered some entries, mains and a beer.
Entries - Chicken Tikka was uncooked. Samosa was extremely good value for money.

Mains - Both the Butter Chicken (something I hardly eat) and Dhal was really good. Aloo Mattar was ok.
Roti was not properly cooked.

Service was ok but they seemed to be over-booked and under-staff.
The lady serving us did try her best and was apologetic.

The Chicken Tikka experience was something that left a bad taste so I don't think I'll be returning.

One star for the fact that the lady tried hard. Probably 1.5 stars would be a better score.

Been ordering take aways from here for 2 years and they've always been courteous, friendly and made a damn nice feed. Only thing I'd question, as I would with just about any other Chinese/Thai/Indian restaurant, is the amount of meat they put in. But value for money 8 out of 10.

We went their at about 2:00pm on Monday 15th July. The rude waiter told us that they we were too LATE EVEN THOUGH the sign on the door listed open, we had to request the waiter to let us dine because we had travelled all the way from Taupo. We ordered two servings of samosas. The waiter said we were only allowed two plates for three persons even though there was four samosas. When he FINALLY served the samosas, he put on a clear fake smile and banged the plates on the table.
Not going back there again

Best god dam Indian I've ever eaten. I have been on a long adventure, looking for the best Indian food across the land and I finally have found this glorious palace that is called SMART INDIA. Highly recommend to all, life is complete!

Whenever we feel like Indian food, we don't eat anywhere else but here. The menu range is great, the food is always freshly made and the quality is excellent. When it is not too busy, the owner always comes out to see if everything is ok and when you become a regular face, he always recognises you with a smile and/or wave when you arrive and leave. Great, friendly, warm service and delicious food. What more can we ask for!

Love the food, the service and the reasonable prices! In my opinion this is the best indian in the Bay... butter chicken is delish, hydrabadi is a family favourite as are the madras and punjabi dishes and the mixed entree platter for 2 is great value for money! Cant go wrong with smart india - we just keep going back for more!

We have been dining at this Indian restaurant for a few years now and this is quite frankly the best Indian restaurant in the Mount and Tauranga areas. Simply put, the food is always fresh, delicious, appetising and beautifully cooked and prepared, but the service is also consistently good and the waiting service always polite, courteous and helpful. The prices are very affordable with a range of sumptuous Indian dishes - if you have not tried proper Indian food before or are wanting to dine at the Bay's best kept Indian food secret - then get on over into the Smart India Restaurant because you will not be disappointed with the food there!

Best Indian in Tauranga area which I have been to. Have been here around 10 times . Often order Chicken Tikka masala and veg dishes which are always great. The owner and the staff always provide good service. The naan bread is always good and leave feeling like money well spent.

I have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed yet. No matter what you choose from the menu it is delicious. We have had people who do not want hot spicy food and have been able to order mild variations and enjoyed their meals. The service is wonderful and the authentic music is great. If you are visiting the Mount a meal at Smart India is a must do.

Our office are regulars for the $10 lunches which are brilliant value for money and more than enough quantity. My favourite is the Chicken Do Pyaza which is packed with flavour. Havent been for sit-down, but definitely will soon. The staff are extremely polite and thankful for your custom. Beats all the others I have tried in Pap/Mt area hands down.

Our family love Indian take away. We've tried many from this area and this is by far the best. They are very polite and service is fast. Food is delicious and prices are better than others in the Mt area. You won't be disappointed!
Samdanae Imran
I've been eating here on occasions for well over 3 years and this place is my indian restaurant of choice out of the numerous places I've tried in Tauranga. You just can't get a better balance of flavours within the food than the chef achieves here.
RZ
decor is very basic but the food here is fantastic. try the chicken punjabi or the paneer mutter with mushrooms. delish. service is always very pleasant and the food is consistently good.
Rob Steward
Very friendly and respectful staff, consistent food, good prices. Everything you'd expect from a great Indian restaurant. We keep coming back - that's the best review an establishment can get!
Carl
Excellent, Best Indian we have had in New Zealand & Overseas (USA)thus far. Food is delicious, generous, and priced reasonably. Service is also good. Recommend A+++

Went with a colleague who likes extremely hot curry, he was satisfied with his dish as was I (Try the Lamb or Chicken Hyadrabadi)

The surroundings are a little plain but don't let that put you off.
