Review Latitude 37 - Mount Maunganui

Nadezda Musatova
Excellent place to get a cocktail, glass of wine of bear. Friendly service, knowledgeable staff. Food was perfect from a look to the last bite. We had lunch there, perfect way to take a break after hiking on Mount Maunganui. Highly recommended!

Yummiest food and good service. Tried chermoula prawns which was surprisingly tasty and we wanted to order more! The restaurant had different service areas dedicated for large groups as well.

Dinner with friends - its been a minute since we were here but we had such a great experience I’m about to gush … Our last minute booking was accommodated seamlessly via the online booking platform which set the scene for our thoroughly enjoyable evening. So enjoyable in fact, none of us grabbed even one pic of our food, so unlike us! Trust me though, the platter and a further selection of the small dishes were all delicious. Nothing massively unique about the dishes, just good food done really well. We were expertly served and tended to from the moment we arrived. Being early wasn’t an issue, and when our friends arrived, our delightful waitress (whose name I have regretfully forgotten), just quietly appeared and helped sort all our requests. It may seem like I’m OTT but this is simply credit and compliments where they are due, and the team working last night deserve it in my book, including the muso dude who graciously insisted on taking photos of our group when he saw me struggling as he arrived for his gig. If you’re thinking of booking dinner here, do it. Or socials with friends to enjoy the sport, the music, the ambience and the attentive team, do it.

Attended the Melbourne Cup Event Recently. Great Atmosphere, Amazing Service, and I had the new Chicken Burger which was yummy. Erin specifically made sure our table was well looked after and other staff were quick to clear our table whenever possible. My food came out very quickly and drinks were never let run empty. Very impressed at what they pulled off here and I will be back next year for this event!

Have eaten here 3 times this week. Eye Fillet, Scallops and Seared Steak Tostada were all amazing. The mussels and clams were great. Thew new sourdough and chicken liver parfait is perfect. Would 100% come back when ever in town. Friendly staff and good service.

Service was prompt and staff was OK. Bustling place. Food was Amazing! My hubby and I shared a platter. The platter had a great selection of seafood, pork belly and duck wings. The duck wing sauce was a bit too sweet, too much hoisin sauce. The rest was delicious. Good value shared platter! The pork belly was delicious. Their kids meal, fish and chips came with just the right amount of chips n had salad with a choice of drink.

Excellent friendly and knowledgeable service. Food was fantastic and a beautiful restaurant. Highly recommend - classic meals but of a high quality

Absolutely delicious food. Had the steak tartare this time and it was absolutely amazing 10/10 love the happy hour $7 drinks HELL YEAH! Cheers team ❤️

Excellent quality food. Duck wings, duck fat mash, ceviche, fish sliders, mussels and calamari were all excellent. The mussels are huge and very fresh. Calamari sauce is fantastic, duck wings succulent, well sauced and not too fatty. The whole meal was delicious and the small plates all work very well together. Very much enjoyed everything. Came to around $115 for 2 people with drinks, so not the cheapest but very tasty

My partner and I celebrated a night out after just getting married, I booked a table online. The service was amazing from all staff. The food was delicious, dessert was yummy. Cocktails was a must. It is all so worth the $$.

I had the best dining experience i have had in years on Tuesday, so much do i joined Trip Advisor so i could leave a review. Ignore the haters, i have never been disappointed when dining here and i have been here a mumber of times, when we have special occasions, and they always knock it out of the park

This place is amazing...best restaurant in tauranga! Always consistently fantastic and never disappointed with our meal & service!

The dinner was so good last night that we went back for "seconds" tonight Some may say that that shows little imagination, I say it reflects the quality of the service and food Can highly recommend Latitude 37

Family get together Labour Day. Each and every meal was divine, service was friendly along with a great atmosphere. Highly recommend and we will be back!

Great place to go for a meal, a drink, or both. Great setting, amazing and retentive service. Devine food, with something to cater for the fussiest of patrons. I would recommend and will make this my local when in the Mount.

Went for lunch today, really disappointed! Do not order the pumpkin gnocchi Was really tough and the sauce was terrible like over thick pumpkin soup, no burnt butter sauce and not even a hint of blue cheese! Couldn’t even eat it. Told them too, and they still had the Gaul to charge! Won’t be going back or recommending.

Always a good vibe here. The food is top quality and the range of drinks is extensive. Never disappoints

Delicious menu and great service, we ordered 2 small plates for myself (1/2 dozen Mussels and Angus Scotch Fillet) and a large plate (Angus Scotch Fillet) for my partner. Both of us were really happy with our choices, we would recommend getting multiple small plates to get maximum value! The small plates were approximately half the price of the large plates and 2 small plates was the perfect quantity for me. It was busy and quite loud, so that's something to be aware of!

Latitude 37 damn really pulled through. After a long drive from Auckland to Mount Maunganui all we wanted was a nice dinner and let me tell you sis it was better than 'nice'. My family and I got dishes to share and everyone liked everything that we ordered! we ordered the garlic bread which costs $11, the snapper sliders which costs $18 as well as the beef sliders which also costs $18, arancini balls (can't find price) and some salad I also can't find on the menu (also only have this one photo sorry!). The restaurant itself is very big and has lots of seating and gets very busy and the service is 10/10. Really worth going here! x

20/2/2019
There was 4 of us. We got seated at the front table where the door is, door was open onto the front patio where the smokers are, we had to close it as the smoking was quite strong.
We ordered our entre dishes...we all loved them. The arachnid balls, the Swiss & the duck fat potato...yummm.
The main, everyone was happy with their main but I wasn’t very happy with my duck,,,,it was over cooked for my liking but my husband ate it.
It was a good night.
We were impressed with the free drinks offered to us when the main was a bit delayed.
Will definitely go there again
3.7. This is a lovely, serviceable little eatery on the main drag of the mount. There were six of us in our party visiting in the high season between Xmas and new year. The service was friendly and attentive. Our party ordered a range of dishes including burgers, sliders and salads. The highlight was the salmon and kumera salad. The salmon was exquisitely fresh and came sitting astride the beautifully prepared salad. The salmon was so well cooked that it flaked off the fillet and subsequently melted in your mouth. Some of our party were critical of one of the burgers. The drinks list was good but the apple juice was dark and cloudy and divided opinions. All in all though, definitely worth a visit here.

Great night out at Latitude 37 on a recent weekend away to the mount. Had some initial bar snacks. The slow cooked beef sliders were very nice but came with blue cheese on it which over powered the beef. Maybe better with whipped feta infused with horseradish but nice all the same. We also had the truffle aranchi balls which were amazing would definitely have these again. Finally we shared the chocolate terrine, this was stunning and the ice cream was amazing still can place what flavor it was. Usually very busy out the front but they also have a nice little outside back area with heaters that never seems to get used. Definitely be back on our next trip. A very nice expresso martini also.

Fantastic food with great service at a reasonable price. Bit noisy but if you like that kind of atmosphere then it’s the perfect place for an evening out with friends or family .
Peter
Went with family group of 30. Nice meal and reasonable service but nothing special. Time to take orders was slow and time out of kitchen slow. Nice range of beers on tap. Some good bar staff, but some average.

Would go back to try small plate options.
Michael Min
The dinner menu was limited but the food is good. The service is exceptional and we didnt have to wait long for our main courses to arrive. Great location closed to Mt Maunganui. A favorite place for local celebrities to hang out. I'd return for the bar.

Best GF platter that you could ask for. Highly recommended to anyone GF tolerant. Staff super friendly and a great atmosphere in the bar. Please visit

Latitude 37 was the first restaurant we dined at during our mini holiday to the Mount. Latitude stands on Mt Maunganui Rd, it's half restaurant and half bar yet sustains an upmarket appeal.

I ordered a lamb rack which was phenomenal. My lamb was cooked to a prefect medium rare and was accompanied with a delicious mix of winter vegetables.

Service was friendly and helpful, the beer selection was also impressive.

I'll definitely come back here on my next holiday to the mount.
Bad English
Well worth the price!
Definitely one of the more expensive place we dined while recently in NZ but well with it. The battered bluff oysters were fried to perfection and the beef cheeks were so tender and juicy. I could not fault anything about the meal plus the wine list was awesome!!

After walking around in gorgeous weather we came in here for lunch also wanting cocktails with it. Service was friendly... we sat out the back outside.. cocktails were nice. We ordered the shared tapas platter ... everything on there was cooked well and tasted great. Perfect for a sharing lunch. Yum

Went here for a late lunch on Christmas Eve. Great food!! Love places that make Arancini!! So I ordered it and it was far from disappointing! Great food with great flavour!! The only down side was no one was there to seat us at a table and my friends burger came out about 15 mins before the rest of our food which meant he had finished eating before we even got our food!! Other wise not unreasonably priced and a nice venue :) thanks for your hospitality!

Suffering from a huge identity crisis with a chef whose ability far outweighs his ambition.

That pretty much sums it up. It isn't bad, it just isn't good.

So you walk in: it's clean, it's big, with a large dining area in the back. We get a table for 2. We sit down. There's 3 chefs in the service window stood there, glaring at us from under the hot lights like pissed off mannequins. I move tables so we're not in each other's eyeline. It's worth mentioning that we're the only people here to eat, the other 30 or so people are noisily drinking in the front of the place where the bar seating is and we're seated in this wannabe fine dining restaturant all alone. I tell you that because we moved table (to a table the exact same size), and we're told we "can't move table, that's for 4 people, yours is for 2. You can't move". That seemed a little drastic given that, again, in a space that probably seats 70, we're 2 people and there's zero difference between the first and second table apart from its location. Probably the wood grain too but I didn't look into it.

Glaring chefs are an interesting foible, the menu is not so much interesting so much as bemusing. It makes zero sense. L37 is very proud of their beef and lamb awards, but there's one dish of each on the menu and both sound unappealing. The rest of the menu is a bizarre fusion of French, Japanese, Thai, traditional UK style food, and a token pasta dish. There's no theme, no style, no identity and looking across the menu the whole thing feels like the chef flicked through a food mag, saw some pictures and thought "yeah, I could do something that looks like that". And while yeah, he probably would there's no rhyme or reason, or indeed skill, for anything to be on the plate that was on there.I mean, I had the fish & chips. Easy, right? It's fish, and it's chips. The chips were the best part of the entire meal for me and the other diners. The fish was grey, bland, and soaking wet, the salad was bland and 100% sans dressing, the chips were OK but when everything else is sub-par, anything just OK is like the Mona Lisa in a kindergarten art class. It stands out.You eat it because you're hungry and by some cruel twist of logic this pile of stuff in front of you is $30. Now interestingly, they say everything is "fresh without compromise". Fresh out of the freezer maybe? Fresh out of the microwave? Certainly not fresh out of the ground, sea, air, or from wherever the particular foodstuff hails. That right there irks me enough to call this place "bullshit" because it bugs me man, it really does to overcharge for just-about-average food.

Now the service... it's not bad, but it's not good, and there's that unmistakable feel that nobody here is really trained. Our waitress was chatty to the point of 'will-you-please-go-away-I'm-eating-here'. The plate is down, she walks off, you pick up your fork, she comes back: "how is everything?" "Erm, yeah, looks great, cheers". And it's the same at the end. I'm still chewing, my fork is in my hand but the plate is mostly cleared. "I'll just take that out the way!""But where will I put my fork?" which kinda comes out as "buwhawlllkeemafor?" and she smiles at me like you would a toddler whose learning to speak but so far can only make noises. It's kinda pernicky, but we're the only guys in the restaurant, you're not busy and you don't need to hound us. Hang back, instill a sense of calm relaxation but her nervousness and just plain not shutting up just left me wishing we didn't have to be so very polite. Damn these British genes. A good restaurant with a good maitre d'/head waiter would call that kinda stuff out in a second but alas, nothing like that exists here and it suffers for it.

Dessert. Remember right back at the start I mentioned the ambition of the chef far outweighs his ability? Nowhere is that more evident than the dessert menu. It comes out looking utterly bewildering. It's all smears of this, and desiccated that, and deconstructed stacks (people still do that?) of adjective-loaded food and it just plain and simply doesn't work. Again, it's like he saw a picture, decided anyone could do it, and did it with absolutely zero thought as to actually construct a dish and what works with what in terms of flavour and texture. Forget presentation, that's the last thing you consider, not the first. I had the 'brownie' which was a 2x2 inch hockey puck of bitter brown stodge. Alongside that bitter brown stodge were a bitter brown brittle cookie thing, bitter crumbs of chocolate, a bitter smear of some skidmark looking thing along the bottom of the plate, and then some overly sour tryhard orange sauce stuff. It wasn't sweet or smooth or indeed actually nice, it was chewy, bitter, sour, chalky and just plain bad. Yet somehow, in some way, this mistake of a dish finds its way onto a very limited menu where one would presume competition would be fierce... then you remember that at this place nothing on the menu seems to actually have any identity or direction or conviction about what it is, just a lot of very badly balanced dishes seemingly made by a chef who can maybe cook, but can definitely not design a menu. It's wayward, pretentious with no backup, meandering with no clear intent, and when the best part of the 3 course meal is a plats of chips you know you've got problems.

The atmosphere is uncomfortable. We got there at 5:30. The place is packed with beer drinkers after work (no problem) watching the sports on the big TVs they have. It's like a sports bar that wants to play at running a restaurant but honestly it was hard to hold a conversation, the staff are picking their nose and bickering back and forth within clear ear/eyeshot and it's amateur stuff that shouldn't happen at a place asking $60 for the venison. At a bar? Sure no worries, but c'mon that's one of the pricier places in town and it's not how you treat customers.

It needs to make its mind up. They probably make more off the bar than they do from food, but the food is meh and the drink is plentiful so no surprises there but they don't coexist peacefully, they nag at each other and spill over - diners trying to hold a conversation, and tradies calling the referee a ****, 10m away from each other.

Man I could write all day about this place. It needs a lot of help: a new chef, new menu, better trained staff, and more self-awareness to know how it looks from the outside in.

Apologies for maybe missing the point, but I've done reviews of restaurants for 11 years all over the world for some newspapers you've probably read and I'm gonna stand by what I said here. It's not bad, but it certainly isn't good.

And btw the total bill was $107. Never again.
November 2018:Dinner for two, in the courtyard. Staff were attentive but not overbearing. Dinner was delicious - Duck was cooked wonderfully ! Will be back !
June 2016: Monday Queens Bday.$90 for duck pate, 1/2 doz mussels, 2 beers, 2 lemon lime & bitters, garlic breads and a curry. Not a bad deal.Pate & Mussels with very nice, great little loaves of garlic bread and when requested the curry came with chilli on the side. Although I wasn't blown away with the curry, it was still nice.GREAT service from the waitstaff and the kitchen were fabulously fast.
Will return.

Latitude 37 is a nice place, I came here to have my lunch last Sunday. I ordered snapper sliders and a lemonade. The snapper sliders were very delicious, but very different from I had in Depot in Auckland, coz the snappers were deep fried.

Had a wonderful dinner there on Saturday and everything was superb. Food was delicious the massamum curry was to die for, service was exceptional.

We started with cocktails and a beer the cocktails were very refreshing for starters we had calamari and the garlic bread they both were perfect. The mains were delicious we had the pork belly (rolled), Eye fillet and the Salmon i felt my salmon dish was perhaps a little bit to oily as there was added oil to Salmon. We had a latitude platter for dessert featuring various little desserts our favourite would of been the creme brulee. The waitress was very nice and the decor was very nice comfortable seating and not to crowded when needing to move around the restaurant via the bar or restrooms. $300 for 3 mains 2 cocktails 1 beer 1 bottle of wine 3 special coffees and 1 platter of desserts including a tip. We would be happy to return next time we are in town.

This place used to be incredible when the original owners opened & operated it. The standards were so much higher & food and service were of an international standard, sadly since they sold it it's not in the same league. Just another bar/restaurant now, albeit a beautifully designed and conceived one

The place is more of a bar than a restaurant. However, the food was great. The service was good too. The prices on the other hand were ridiculous. Too expensive for a glorified bar, hence the 3 star rating.

Really enjoyed our food. Sirloin was melt in the mouth. Salmon was cooked to perfection. Lovely simple menu. Cosy feel, lovely staff. The only negative would be the price. Its a pub/bar atmosphere but they're charging fine dining prices! The food has stunning presentation, so I can see how they've come up with those prices, but I think they should consider sticking to under the $30 mark for the mains....and serve the food with a bit more veg. Literally that's my only groan though....total compliments to the chef and the really sweet staff.
Alexandra
This restaurant gets an average rating from me. The mains are extremely overpriced for what you get...they are in the realm of $30-$40 when they would be better suited to the $20-$25 range. The food was good but not exceptional enough to justify the prices. The vanilla brulee was delicious, though and more than worth the money.

The service was average and our waiter seemed inattentive to our table and like he couldn't wait to get off work. We had to attract attention to ask for things like the drinks/dessert menu, as no one came to see how our meals were or if we would like another drink, etc, which is poor business practice in general.

Our bill came to something like $140 for two people...we had two mains, two desserts and 3 or 4 drinks, pretty expensive for an average dining experience. I would like to try this place again as many of the mains sounded delicious, not sure if I'd be willing to spend as much again, though.

I went to Latitude 37 over Queens Birthday weekend, it had great atmosphere. I had a meal with my family on Sat night. It was very busy but the waitresses were very efficient and friendly. I had the eye fillet and it was delicious. The chocolate tequila mousse cake was to die for !! I would definately dine here again and will recommend it to all my friends.

Lovely fish and chips, but quite expensive. But will visit again.

Found this amazing restaurant tucked behind the bar on the main road. Amazing service and speedy meal delivery. Waiting staff super friendly and helpful. Nice atmosphere. And the icing on the cake was the amazing meals, am a small eater but split my meals with my daughter and enjoyed three courses all of which were faultless, fresh crispy fish and chips and amazing tasting breads and dips and topped off with the vanilla brulee mmmmm mouth watering, couldnt fault it had amazing time.

I dined at Latitude just before xmas with a few friends,
we were only having a few drinks but decided to stay for meal after watching several dishes being delivered.
I had the Fish and Chips, which was delicious nothing like your local shop can do. The others ordered off the snack menu, the antipasto platter was a feast for your eyes, only complaint was our bar leaner was a squeeze to fit all the meals.
The service was great, cant wait to return for a few bev'ies in the new year.

Cheers lat team.

Went to Latitude for a birthday celebration last week, was an amazing experience!

the table had eye fillet steak and fish of the day, service was excellent, was waitress was kind friendly and very lovely and the food was brilliant! once our main meal was over they brought out the birthday girls desert with a candle on it without it being requested! which was a really nice gesture!

all round awesome atmosphere and service

good work team at latitude! will surely be back! :)

Merry xmas from a very satisfied customer.

We went to Latitude 37 at the Mount for dinner last night as I had heard good comments about this place.
I was so disappointed;
I ordered the Past of the Day. After placing my order I asked if I could cancel it as I wasn’t that hungry, the waiter said they can do a half pasta – great I changed my order to the half portion.
When I came to pay I was told that it would be $21.90 and I said that I only had the half portion and she said they do not change their prices for half portions.
I said it would’ve been nice to have been told this by your waiter as I would’ve stuck to cancelling my order, or been aware of this and taken the rest as a “takeaway”.
All she said was “I will let my staff know for the next time”.
My experience at Latitude 37 was very disappointing – the Pasta was tasteless, the attitude of not adjusting the price and the customer service not the best.
I have made sure I have told my friends’ and work colleagues about this experience and I definitely will not be going back there.
Remember that saying one person tells someone, who tells someone, who tells someone and it goes on and on and on..Come on Astrolabe Restaurant and bar at the Mount!!
Jean Harmens
I agree with Joshua Bennet's comment..

Such a pity because once upon a time Latitude was a great place to dine with excellent food and service!

The food is poor and overpriced for what you get.

The chowder was extremely bland, just tasted like cream. One person at our table ordered the fish and chips, her meal was cold and consequently sent back only to have the same piece of fish (in pieces) re-heated and redelivered to the table! No apologies were made and the service from the Maitre'D was disgusting. Couldn't wait to get out of there! Will not be returning for a meal.
M Hamilton
Great location but ultimately disappointing.

Flustered waiting staff who forgot drinks and to take orders when the restaurant was perhaps a third full and unremarkable, expensive food means we won't return here.
Ash Wackrow
One of our favourite restaurants. good lunches as well as dinners. Great service, great food, good prices. 5/5. throughly recommend.
Janet Blaauw
I went out for dinner at Latitude in May 2010 with a group of ladies I went to teachers training college with.

The staff were wonderful, the food delicious, and the ambiance fantastic. I would not hesitate to go back for another meal.

I had the Seafood Paella and am busy trying to emulate it myself...Great stuff guys. Keep up the good work!

We love this restaurant have been here at least 4 times so far. The meals are very generous, the atmosphere is always warm and vibey. We have only experienced really good service. It does get very busy at times and it understandably slows down a little. The menu has changed since we first started going so was sad to see the venison and duck confit off the menu, and the dessert that used to be so beautifully presented have changed. but we still love this place. Please bring back the strawberry&champange cheese cake. It was too beautifully presented to eat!
Erika
We came here for our wedding rehearsal dinner.
We waited for over 2 and a half hours for our food. Some came out cold.. some hot... some just room temp. The prices were too high for what you got.. no one apologized... it wasnt busy that night... and I even had to go to the bar and ask for water because it was never replenished to the table. I was very disappointed and so were my wedding guests who flew in from all over the world. Very upsetting!
Linda Rawlinson
My husband and I took 29 adults and five grandchildren to this restaurant for my husbands 60th.
Everyone agreed that the food was excellent and the service great. In fact we went back the next day for breakfast. We have also booked ourselves in for a family Christmas dinner. Throughly recommend this restaurant.
Joshua Bennet
I normaly do not make reviews but in this case I'll made an exemption.
The service very average and the food realy poor.
To the owner/s: get yourself a real chef and good restaurant manager before is too late.
Sandra Morgan
The food, the presentation and the service was superb. We had a wonderful evening there and would certainly reccommend your restaurant.
Dionne O'Brien
What an excellent place. We went with a large group and children, the waiter was excellent with the kids nothing was a problem. The food was great as was the service. We will definitely return to this restaurant in Nov when we go back to The Mount!!! Thanks so much.
