Review The Chosen Bun - Mount Wellington

Small burger place, you can select salad bowl instead of bread if you want low carb. Food are good, reasonable price. I like their fish bite, too

Amazing burgers here! I tried both the Guac Star and the Big Smoke and both were really interesting and tasty takes on burgers. You could tell the food was made there and not just frozen patties. Though I didn't eat it, there's a really nice relaxed vibe here. I'll definitely be back to try some of their other burgers!

Had the standard burger and my daughter had the kids meal. Both were fantastic! French fries were awesome too. Definately recommended if in the area.

My friend who has celiac disease was able to eat here - and not just a side of fries! She really enjoyed her “The 5 Star Man” with onion rings even, and my “Big Smoke” was fantastic. We both also thoroughly enjoyed our shakes - although, they don’t offer alternatives to dairy milk.
Alice
solid burger and fries. had to take my friend here who is coeliac and she loved it too!

A fairly recent opening, it is already quite busy. There is a small dining area which has about 7 tables as well as a bar along the window. When I went it was full most of the time with people waiting for tables. The menu is fairly simple, a range of different burgers with interesting combinations, as well as sides and drinks. You order at the front and then either wait for a takeaway or sit at a table. They conveniently have the wait times written behind the counter. We ordered shakes with the burgers along with the onion rings and fried chicken sides. They were all good. Onion rings were nice and crispy as were the chicken. The shakes were delicious and creamy. The burgers were tasty and juicy. A good place to stop for a burger that is slightly different from the norm.

When it comes to burgers in Auckland, it doesn't get any better than The Chosen Bun. Crowd favourites are the 5 Star Man and the Golden Phoenix. Perfect option for Gluten Free and Coeliacs alike.

Very reasonably priced. I love that they have the option of a burger bowl for the low carb foodie - won me over with that option alone! Most places do a bun-less burger that is over in a few bites. These “bowls” are an actual meal. I had The Holy One - very generous and delicious, and the mozzarella sticks are really good. Small space so you’d want to get in quick for a seat. I will def go back! I can’t wait to try another option.

Its not often that I award 5 stars but I believe these guys have earned it. I've been here a number of times so far and they haven't disappointed yet. Burgers are on the expensive side and you'll wait while they prepare it... BUT IT'S WORTH IT!! My first visit, I accidentally ordered The Righteous One (portobello mushroom burger W/grilled halloumi, onion rings & red pesto aioli). I'm not a vegetarian by nature but this burger could actually convert me. Next time you're hungry, run don't walk here. Your stomach will thank you.

This is a great burger joint. Loved the big smoke flavor. Was a bit disappointed that we couldn't dine in after a long drive due to their distancing rules, could have easily and safely accommodated a few tables though.

I’ve eaten A LOT of burgers in my time - you don’t get a mum tum sans the kids without consuming copious amounts of carbs and meat - this hands down has to be the best burger joint in Auckland. Their ‘5 Star Man’ is a standout, great value for money and will leave you in a cerebral gloriously satisfied food coma. 10/10, great food and service everytime.

Excellent burgers tasty chips. Milkshakes are good too. If you are near stone fields definitely one of the better burger places in Auckland
Graeme Doull
Good burgers and chips. Shakes and drinks overpriced for what they are. No real atmosphere dinning in. Most customers are takeaway or uber eats I'm betting.

Great little place to have a quick meal.. reasonable price. Fish bites is a whole piece of fish in bites size..
Jeffrey B
Enjoyed the burger, competent staff who no only knew the menu but also gave an accurate timeframe for pickup.

Great burger and services

Great burgers. We had the Holey one and the Golden Phoenix. The Holey one was delicious (maybe just a bit too sweet for my taste with the onion jam) and both burgers travelled well - the fried chicken in the Golden Phoenix stayed nice and crispy even after a 20 minute drive home and no soggy buns. Great chunky fries too but I would have liked more aioli.

If not the covid 19 I would give you 1 star.
We have ordered the chosen bun burgers and chips for 3 people. Burgers were below average with next to no seasoning. Only buns were good. A couple of pieces of gherkins, almost no sauce and mustard.
Chips were horrible and soggy. We had to put them under the grill to crisp them up. By the time burgers were cold. Just rubbish food!
If you charging premium prices then please make premium food. Garlic mayo, where is the garlic?
Shame because we are next door but won’t be buying again. We wanted to buy the mushroom burgers, you said; out of stock. No excuse!
Seems like you cannot even provide what’s on your menu offer.

Usually I'm not a big fan of burger but love this !!!
The bun is light and soft with a decent scent of butter, I can just eat the bun without having anything extra.after all 15 dollars for a burger like this is quite pricey.

Best burgers we’ve had in ages! We got the Golden Phoenix & Hot Chick chicken burgers on Uber Eats - divine! Fresh, light non-stodgy buns. Beautiful fresh slaw and the chicken was melt on your mouth. Good chips too. Five star burger!!
Renee
Love this place. Have loved all of the burgers I’ve tried but always end up going back to a classic chosen bun. Reasonably priced for the quality and portion size. Great friendly service! (Wish they’d bring back their mozzarella sticks)

We ordered the chosen bun, the golden phoenix, popcorn chicken and some chips 🍟

The chosen bun (cheeseburger) was pretty average to be honest. The bun was definitely too big for its contents but it was a good carrier as it held it all in. Unfortunately, the average comes from the biggest problem I have with this - pickles. All I could taste was pickles. You basically had a layer of pickles (a pickle patty). It just ruined the experience and didn't let me enjoy the experience as a whole. Rate 2/5.

The golden phoenix was a bit better. The crunchy honey sriracha buttermilk fried chicken with slaw and kewpie mayo was definitely better than the cheeseburger. Same deal with the bun but this time it wasn't ruined by a ' pickle patty' but by an absence of flavour. That was probably due to the burger being too big and not easily eaten with a single bite (new metric incoming: bite-ability). It was okay though, 3/5.

The 2 sides were good. Came with a sriracha mayo which definitely helped to down the cheeseburger.

Overall the experience was good except the cheeseburger that should be renamed to 'welcome to the pickle party'. Everything else helped the end rating though, 3.5/5.

If we came back it would be to try the other burgers on the menu.
Hiro
Impressed. Had the five star man and it was banging. Buns were soft and fluffy, beef patty’s cooked to perfection with a slight pinkness that I love. The onion rings inside still held their snap despite dripping in tangy bbq sauce and two cheeses. A bit pricy at $17 but considering it filled me up and I wasn’t digging into fries as a gap filler, it was beyond my expectation, was worth it.

Went last night, on my own, had been there 3 times previously. Food had always been good, great value, Short on choice but hey, quality, not quantity. A nice if sterile little local burger bar with a licence, albeit alcohol drinks minimal in options and quality, but shakes look awesome.

However......I had always been served at my table. No sign saying that is not supposed to happen. I got given water, and staff took my order for wine which as usual came quickly. And then I waited...and waited....and waited.....and then caught the eye of a staff member to order. She promptly, and impolitely told that I should order at the counter. Really ? I pointed out my past experience of ordering at the table and was informed quite rudely that they had done that out of courtesy. I was upset and said well, thanks, but no thanks, I'm off. When paying at the counter, The staff member then started to argue her point !!!! Really ??? The word sorry in any context never passed her lips !!

They clearly don't value customers.....most of their business is takeaway for Uber eats and obviously that is their priority.

I won't be back; their burgers are not exactly to die for and I don't appreciate rudeness.

I was not expecting these burgers to be much to have about, but boy, I got proved wrong! These burgers were delish and so satisfying! The portion for the sweet potato fries was surprisingly massive, my bf and I didn't think we would be able to finish all three. I will definitely come back again and try the other burgers!
Arianaaa
Ordered The Holey One, the buns were v soft and tasty! Burger were a decent size as well but were a tad little expensive for the serving. Their sauce for kumura fries was rather plain

Don't know why this doesn't have a better rating?! Everything you want from a good old burger joint. We had the golden Phoenix, holey one and the popcorn chicken. All tasted amazing! Burgers had great flavours and the fried chicken were bigger bits than expecting, crunchy and not oily. So glad we've found this place will be back a lot 😁

Hands down the best burgers in Auckland. Service is always friendly and quick. The burgers are always delicious and portions are always generous. Lucky to have such a great burger joint in the neighbourhood.

Best burgers , awesome service and fast definitely recommend , the five star man is definitely a favorite and popcorn chicken , and wash it down with there milkshake
Tanja Jujnovich
Awesome friendly service, cute, super clean venue and great food! Obsessed with the chicken burgers, think the meat burgers would be even better with some vege added for freshness
Deborahruttenberg
Delicious burgers and chips. The atmosphere is great too. My favourites here are the original beef burger and the vegetarian halloumi/mushroom burger (can't remember the names offhand). My only complaint is the long wait time, but still definitely worth visiting.
Laura Anderson
Large and delicious burgers all well priced. The chips were to die for and I had an amazing strawberry milkshake. There are cute booths to sit in and the service was fantastic. I would recommend The Chosen Bun to all of my friends!

Local burger place. Large portions LOVE there chicken and vege burgers haven’t had a burger we don’t like. Super quick turn around and if your feeling extra naughty the chicken bites are AMAZING
Jack Burton
The fried chicken in my golden phoenix was so good and went really well with the rest of the fillings. Chips were pricey but super tasty.
Love these quality burgers.

Tried this place back in April. Ordered the hot chick and the holey one. Overall the burgers were above decent size, quite filling and were fresh. Did order late around 2 pm so wasn't busy, and overall was pleased with the burgers.

Food 5/5. The burger is a delight!! Great balance of taste and fried chicken is crispy and not oily at all
Service 5/5 is nice and pacient!
Ambience 4.5/5 is good just a bit cold at night...
Value 4.5/5. Two burgers with a side spent $39

After the opening of this new burger bar, we gave them a few turns having our work place so close. Was a hit and miss to start when the consistency dropped. The flavor seemed to lack from a lot of the burgers.
Luz !
Everything was fine... nice place, concept... service... but... no vegetables! So disappointed they could not have a more balanced choice with lettuce and tomato (which is also a classic for a reason). None of the options had tomato. Plates were not colorful and obviously heavy.

4.5/5 Taste
4/5 Display
4.5/5 Quantity
4/5 Customer Service

Amazing Burger shop in Stonefields Auckland.

I tried this place because it was on Uber Eats.
Chicken burger was really good with the spicy sauce and heaps of pickles.
Having the burger on a salad is such an amazing idea I’m going to have to try this at my Cafe too.
Beef burger was really good too, plenty of sauce plenty of meat and cheese.

The photos look pretty bad cus i dropped the uber eats bag :(
I’ve only tried the hot chick and the fish burger and both were damn good! The hot chick has this yummy smokey bbq sauce that goes well with the fried chicken. The swiss cheese and pickles are also perfect with it. I’ve read other reviews someone saying the pickles were overpowering? I completely disagree, it’s a good contrast against the fried chicken. The bun bread they use is also perfect, it’s soft and it holds the filling well, nothing spills out. 5 stars. I’m glad there’s a yummy burger place in my area/Stonefields, thank you!

I saw Chosen Bun advertised on Instagram and the slightly different burger flavours took my fancy so we checked them out for dinner.
We got the quac burger with a GF bun, two hot chicks, fries and kumara fries.
First with the quac burger...there are a lot of bad GF burger buns out there, but there are also a lot of good ones. This was not one of those. It was really dry and put a pretty big damper on the whole burger. The patty was pretty nice, the sauce was delicious and the corn chips gave a nice nutty kind of flavour. Overall 3/5.
The hot chicks were of a similar vein. The bun was nice and the chicken deliciously fried and crunchy, but the slaw was soggy and they should really change the name coz it was anything but hot. 3.5/5
The kumara chips were nice but the massive let down of the night was the fries. Soggy and flavourless, I was not having a bar of it. It's like when you leave your chips overnight in the fridge then try heat them up the next day. 1/5
Overall a pretty good meal but the Chosen Bun needs some shaping up if they're gonna become a go-to around here
Mr4saken
very nice place to eat, clean and friendly staff. burger taste good too! im just a little disappointed with the size portion of their servings, i mean for a $16 burger, the size should be atleast slightly bigger than that. the $16 burger from other shop is bigger than what they serve here. overall im happy for everything apart from the size portion. service, venue, food are 5 star to me but the price and size portion are just 4 star. :-)

Absolutely unreal burgers. Awesome atmosphere. Pays to order in advance to save on wait times. Would highly recommend to anyone in Auckland to go and have one.

We had heard about this new burger joint down in Stonefields so decided to check it out. We ordered the holey one, the five star man, kiddy burger, small hand cut fries and hand cut Kumara fries. We were able to get a table with no problem. The aesthetics of the joint are awesome and the service is great. It’s a shame that the burgers didn’t come with lettuce and tomato as we assumed they would. My husbands burger description stated it had mushroom sauce but it turned out to be just mushrooms and aioli. The caramelised onion in both our burgers was layered on to much and overpowered the burger, it took over any other flavours. The buns were amazing and the patties were juicy. If the burgers had lettuce and tomato the score would have been a lot higher. The fries were nice but too much with the aioli definitely recommend the Kumara fries over the potato fries.

One of the best burger places in Auckland. Great customer service and good location in upcoming suburbs of Stonefields. Had the Holey One burger and fries. I love how the bun was soft and easy to hold. The taste of the sauce and the meat was epic. Very tender and tasty. Fries and the dip were terrific. Will definitely be back again many times!! :)

I came across a Facebook ad for The Chosen Bun and the burgers looked so appetizing I just had to try it (because advertising has never deceived anyone before).

Starting with sides, the Popcorn Chicken was alright. The pieces were big, the batter was nice (albeit unevenly distributed) but there wasn't a lot of chicken, especially considering it costed $9. It came a top a bed of slaw. For chips, neither the regular nor kumara versions were crunchy. The kumara chips were chunky and slightly sweet which I liked. The regular chips were chunky in shape but rather flimsy in structure. They came seasoned with a bit of salt and pepper which I liked and both orders of were accompanied by aioli dip.

The burger I chose was the Hot Chick - which was designed to be a spicy, buttermilk fried chicken burger. The frying of the chicken was very good and it did look like the photo I saw but I found the pickles and cheese too overpowering and couldn't taste the spicy mayo at all.

I was also able to try the Chosen Bun which was their basic $10 cheeseburger. The beef patty was large, hearty and moist but I once again found the pickles too overpowering. I would say this was a decent burger offering good value for money.

My friends ordered the O Fishial and Five Star Man and the general feeling at the table was beef burgers were the way to go.

At the recommendation of the man at the counter, I also had a Choc Fish Shake. The consistency wasn't thick like you'd expect from a milkshake. It more closely ressembled milk and tasted closer to a yoghurt drink opposed to ice cream.

The waiters are extremely friendly and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Service wasn't particularly fast or slow and the venue was very clean. It is a bit small however, so I can see it getting quite packed during busy hours.

My first experience at The Chosen Bun wasn't particularly negative but there was also nothing memorable about it. I feel like once TCB sorts out a few of their kinks (which as a new player is perfectly reasonable), they have the potential to churn out some real showstoppers.

The chicken burgers are really good and the onion rings too!

The beef burger felt a little dry.

The toffee choc shake was epic.

Will definitely be back.

These burgers are so YUM! The gherkins are amazing too. The kumara chips need a bit more seasoning though - they were bland and burnt. Will come back again.

Great burger place. We went early on a friday night and it was already getting busy. The staff were friendly and attentive. We had the Guac Star, Five Star Man and kids burgers plus kumara and potato chips. The burgers were very tasty but I prefer some salad on mine which they did not have. The chips were quite salty but otherwise good. Nice fit out with a few booths as well as tables and chairs. We will be back

First off - so yum! Really high quality and best burger I’ve had in a while. Opted for the Plain Chick and the chicken was super crunchy. We grabbed it takeaway but the dining area itself is cosy and modern looking. Definitely going out of my way to come here next time I need my burger fix. It was also a very tall burger so you’ll need some space in your stomach to finish the thing! Chips were also quite nice and looked kind of hand cut.

Excellent food amazing bun and the quality of the burger was 10/10. I would recommend and a great place for quality family takeaway. The fries were crisp and well cooked super yummy. Generous serve

Fresh ingredients and the cheese is melted onto the pattie which is a winner for me. Plenty of parking and the space is clean. Will definitely be coming back!
Heard there was a new burger place down the road from our house so thought we would pop down and have a try. Friendly staff, good vibes. Burger we got was the chosen bun, similar to a cheeseburger. The meat was juicy and the pickles were delicious. Definitely one of the best burgers I have tried in Auckland.
Julia Louise
Attentive, friendly staff who went out of their way to cater for dietary needs. They custom made their vegetarian burger so it could be gluten and dairy free for me. Delicious food, will be back again for sure!

Had the best double beef burger in a long time while my mate had the buttermilk chicken burger. Both were really good. Good portion of chips served as well. Best place in the hood by a long shot. Will be coming back again.

Staff were a bit busy as it was a Friday evening, and the wait times were fairly long. Nevertheless, the burgers were unique and great tasting. A little expensive for medium sized burgers in comparison to local places such as Big J's, but very unique burgers and it had a nice, if a little cramped, atmosphere.

Fast service, friendly staff and tasty burgers. Even though they just open last week the service was like clockwork, other gourmet burger places can sometimes take a while to get your burger. The fries are standard and for the onion rings I prefer more batter, but the Five Star Man burger was delicious. Will definitely come back again to try the other burgers. Well worth a try 😊

Had a great first experience at The Chosen Bun! Love the name and concept of this place. I got the Golden Phoenix and Fries, which were both delicious. The waitstaff were very attentive coming and checking on us and asking if we needed anything, which I felt was a nice touch. Will be coming back to try their other burger flavours! Would be nice to see them with a liquor licence as there is nothing better than a beer and a burger 👍

Im not much of a burger person so I'm hesitant when it comes to eating burger out 😅. However I have to say I really enjoyed this place. Their buns were really soft, fresh and had a nice light taste. I had the plain chick and really liked it. Wasn't over the top or too little was just right. Fresh, chicken was crunchy and good portion. And their chips were amazing! Loved the sauce the freshness of it. To top it off their toffee shake was too and would definitely recommend if you have a sweet tooth. Lastly owners were lovely gave great service and made dining their enjoyable. Thank you guys! I like the uniqueness of the place not your regular burger joint. Would definitely say give this place a try 🙌👌

On a rainy Sunday evening we decided to venture out and try one of the newer business establishments. The owners were very friendly and welcoming and gave great suggestions on their good. The buns were nice and crispy, a little sweet. The meat in the burgers was juicy and delicious. My friend had the plain chick burger and thoroughly enjoyed it. The shake we got was the the toffee choc which was very rich/sweet so great if you have a super sweet tooth. Over all it was a. Great first impression. Wishing the owners all the best of luck with the business going foward. See ya soon!
