Review Thai Train 2 - Mount Wellington

Marie Corcoran
This is our local Thai place so decided to give it a try. Don’t be put off by the young guy taking the orders. He is maybe just experiencing some teenage angst 😀 We had the curry puffs, yellow curry with chicken and rice and the Tom yum noodle soup. We ate in as there are a few tables inside. Both dishes were really delicious with fresh ingredients and very reasonable portion sizes. The cost was amazing $32!! Definitely an incentive to return. Such good value and taste

Constantly great. Authentic style food, great hospitality, small and welcoming atmosphere. Great place for take out or dine in.

$15 Chicken Pad Thai...tasty and fresh. It was prepared quick and staff was reasonably friend. The place is more like a takeaway restaurant but you can dine in too...few tables available though.

The food was good, I tried the 'dangerous noodles' as description looked interesting. The dish was good but not dangerous at all.. 😀

By no way the most amazing dinning experience - it’s a takeaway that you can sit down and eat at .... but if you want good tasty Thai at a very reasonable price this is the place to come!!!
Vin Benson
Nice food at a good price. Friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere. Very clean. Vegan friendly 🙂

Having lived in Thailand for a few years, the food is exactly what I tasted there. Aroi mak mak

Very friendly staff. Good and reasonably priced food.

Great place, good service, clean and neat, excellent flavour, good prices, good for groups.

We love Thai Train. Good consistent food. I won’t say its the most gourmet Thai in Auckland, but it’s very well priced for a quick family takeaway!

I would 100% recommended this authentic Thai shop to everyone. The owner is really kind and generous. The food is also superb delicious. I definitely order more and more menu from this shop again and again. Thank you for cooking me the yummy Tom yum noodle soup. Love this. 👍👍😋😋

Very good food - not a licensed restaurant so it was soft drinks only

I don't usually do ratings on Google but this one is a well deserved. Went there for a takeaway got a original fried rice. Top quality and full of flavour and good price. My wife couldn't handle as I asked for medium and she said it was too hot. Called the staff and they handled the situation very nicely and proposed to adjust the spiciness without any probs. When I came home to eat it was a pleasant experience: hot food and still tasty. Definitely will come back :) Keep up the good work!

Lovely service, great spring rolls, awesome stir fry’s and always prompt! Love their food.

My go-to uber eats outlet that delivers to work. Love the green curry and the drunken noodles. Cheap as chips and always consistently delicious. I always customize my orders and they've never missed a thing. 😍

My family and I LOVE the salmon fried rice and everything else on the menu, no faults! The spice level we get is always consistent and the staff are super friendly. Was craving it the entire lockdown and finally got some after 5 weeks! Really good price for what you get 🕺🏽

This is the 2nd time I've eaten here. Both times, the food was great. I had the Larb. The guy asked me how hot I wanted it and I sand medium, but it was more like hot. It was still delicious. My friend was also very happy with her Cashew Nut dish. We got one bowl of rice between the two of us and it was just right. I would have liked some tea but they are a small outfit and really only do cooking. There is a cold drink cabinet. I asked for water and was rewarded by a large bottle of chilled water with 2 glasses. Lately I have had tepid water at several eating establishments. You can see into the kitchen from the small dining area. I will be back at Thai train. Great food at a reasonable price, with pleasant staff.

The best place for delicious and fairly priced Thai Food.<br/>The quality of food is always fantastic, whatever I have had from here is consistently phenomenal (my favourites are the Pad Thai or the Cashew Nut stir fry) and the portion sizes are great.<br/>Also, the staff are all super lovely. An absolutely amazing addition to Mount Wellington. If you haven’t given this place a go yet - would highly recommend! We’ve tried 2 other Thai places in Mount Wellington / Lunn Ave and this one is miles better.<br/>Thanks for the awesome service!

They have one of the best thai stir fries in Auckland. Drunken noodles. Highly recommended. It's not too sweet, they're generous with the meat and veges and it's very flavorful. Also good price.

Staff - 10/10 the lady at the counter was very nice & so was the chef & i likes the effort he made of saying goodbye as we left from the kitchen <br/>Environment - 9/10 clean & tidy <br/>Food - 8/10 chicken pad Thai & the nasi goreng (Indonesian fried rice) was delicious. However the chicken stir fry I didn’t like as it had coconut milk/cream in it. <br/>Also their portion sizing is good too. <br/>Very affordable.

Had lunch with my friend here yesterday 4th July. First off, place is clean, inviting and comfortable. The lovely people there made us feel welcomed. We ordered prawn in dessicated coconut, prawn & vegetable spring rolls and stir fry combination cashew nuts. Let me just say the food came in a very timely manner. I wasn't a big fan of the prawns mainly because I wasn't really a fan of the coconut. But the others were delicious in every way and portion is very reasonable. I would love to come back for more of their dishes

Authentic Thai food and good service. Not a proper restaurant but the seating arrangement is good. Loved the train layout though. Genuine price for decent portions. Must try if you love Thai food.

I like how when i said ”spicy” finally an outlet that listened. Most of the time you go to an outlet and say spicy they give you the “European” spicy. But here they give you thai spicy 👍👍👍<br/>Pad thai, green curry and chicken cashew nut is yum, unsure of the salmon fried rice tho???? All the entrees are a lil proprietary and seem out of the box from the freezer? But still okay. Im not a fan of dishes not coming with rice and having to add it but thats just me. <br/>The outlet itself is clean and tidy. The service is lil unenthusiastic but okay?????<br/>Prices are okay and so are servings justify the price.

First time at this place. The food price was reasonable and the taste and presentation was average. The painting or pictures on the wall made it seem like we were inside a train.. small space. It’s good for small groups.

The food is always good and the service super friendly. Had never once been disappointed! The spring rolls, Pad thai and Masan curry are my favorites!
Nathan Anderson
The food portions are very generous at a decent price and at the same time the taste is exquisite and spice is perfect. Could use some indoor music to make the place seem more lively.

<br/><br/>- I ordered a larb gai salad and it was literally 90% chicken. The portion was small for $12.50 and it’s was all chicken apart from a few shreds of onion and carrot. It was tasty but overall not worth it. Small portions and .not. Salad.<br/>- the person I ate with ordered a red curry. The bowl was not very big and it was only half full. Like actually half full. It was also yellow? <br/>- The dishes don’t come with rice <br/><br/>Overall it was overpriced for what we were served. The food tasted alright but it was small portions and definitely not ‘salad’ or ‘red’ curry.<br/><br/>I’m sorry, the chefs looked like lovely people but :(<br/><br/>

No atmosphere. No background music. Food extremely salty and small portion for the price. <br/><br/>Customer service pretty Dry not very welcoming. “Eat here or take away?” .. “eat here thanks” .. “PAY NOW” a snappy response from the lady at the cashier. <br/><br/>Asked for water when seated I was told to “buy it” then I enquired of regular tap water.. which surprisingly was available and ready bottled..<br/><br/>would not return. P.s also requested a basic Thai dish off the menu which I was told immediately “not possible!”. All our dishes were overly seasoned.

I love the Pad Thai with Prawns here ....lovely!! We regularly make a trip over this way for lunch in weekend. Tried the Roti and Chicken skewers too...fantastic!! The ambience is very simple, not a flashy place ....but clean and friendly, and with outstanding food 😊
Averyl Antonette Rodrigues
The food was really really good. We stuck to simple dishes like Nasi Goreng and Pad Thai. The place is reasonably priced. Both dishes were light, had their unique taste and the portions were decent too. The person at the counter could be a little more friendly though...

Always satisfying. Been multiple times and never been disappointed by the quality. Highly recommend if you want a great meal at an equally great price.

The restaurant opens at 1030 but when we arrived just before 1100, we were told that they were open so that they could start to prepare for lunch. We were reluctantly let in since the other chef was still out buying ingredients and were told it would take about 30 minutes to cook.<br/><br/>We ordered and paid then another person came in and were given the same talk. We sat in the back and the other Chef arrived. it took about 10 minutes to get the food. Ordered a pad thai, a green pork curry and a satay chicken. The food was ok. The curry was the best of the lot.

Absolutely love this place. Order from and visit this place often with work colleges during lunch and the taste of our order is 100% each time. Great taste, good portions and the right price. I've taken a couple of first timers to this place and they all loved the flavor of the food. The restaurant is a bit chilly during winters but the food won't disappoint.
Chris
One of my favourite local takeaways which I regularly visit. Their Pad Thai is amazing, quick service and have found their food is always fresh with lots of flavour. Thanks Thai Train!

Yum yum yum! The person who takes your orders sometimes seems like they really don't want to be there and can be quite blunt or not say very much but the food is really yummy. Have tried Pad Thai, Massamum, spring rolls, curry puffs, drunkin noodles and a couple of others are all were very very tasty. Definitely recommend this place and not usually a long wait even when busy so that's an extra plus. Dine in or takeaway

Wow, what a horrific experience. Spent all the day at the hospital with a dying loved one and stopped for a curry on the way home. The food came quick but unfortunately when I got home I realised my vegetarian curry had chicken in it. I was starving so I ate the roti and dumplings. The dumplings tasted like vinegar and little else. I called the restaurant and they were terribly confused and thought I was ordering a chicken curry. When they finally understood they said little; suggested I return for a refund another day. Not possible for me. No offer to make another meal. I drove back with the curry and asked for a full refund and the guy would only give me $14 back for the curry despite the fact I'd by this stage wasted an hour and still had no meal. He chucked the cash on the counter and walked off. Disgusting.

We ordered for a mixed appetizer platter, red curry and fried rice . <br/>We were highly disappointed as the curry puffs and spring roll were stale and on complaint the staff just said sorry . <br/>Obviously with such a start we couldn't enjoy the rest of the food as we weren't sure if that was fresh too.

Recently started working in the area so have been trying all the food places for lunch and this is definitely one of my favourites! Really delicious fresh food, we got the Chicken Pad Thai Takeaway and got it Thai hot so was nice and spicy. Good value for money as portions sizes are great, basically lunch & dinner for me😂 <br/>Staff are friendly, highly recommend.

Yuck. Not very impressed. I ordered chicken pad thai and must be the worst I've ever had. It's so sweet and orange? Won't be going back here again - sad as it's my first time trying their food.
Bobby Anderson
Tasty food at reasonable price. Staff can be more friendly though as the waiter brought the food to our table without saying what it was. Tried the massamam curry and duck curry. And a pad sew ew. I would recommended all of these

It's a lunch at nearly the same location in Mt Wellington where we were two days ago, just on the other side of Zambrero.  Nasi Goreng fried rice was excellent - rich of flavour - just by itself, it deserved a 4/5, but roast duck & egg noodle soup was bland. With the same price, noodle soup seemed much over-priced. Service was not at all appealing - maybe today's the day the late Thai emperor was going to be cremated. <br/>(Food - 3.5/5; Service - 2/5)

We ordered the yellow chicken curry and the chicken cashew nut stir fry. The stir fry was average but the yellow curry was awful. The vegetables had an unpleasant, lingering taste and the potato was raw. We dined in and the lighting and ambience inside the restaurant was poor and the service left much to be desired. The dine-in tables had jars of salt and other seasoning condiments and when I checked inside to see what each jar contained, I found that the spoons looked to have been left in them for quite some time, including the one that contained some kind of sweet and sour sauce. When I arrived home I found that, when I checked the menu, I had been overcharged. I would not recommend buying food here and I will not be buying food from here again.

I am so disappointed with the food quality and service o recieved from this place, the potato was raw couldn't put fork through it barely any chicken, the atmosphere was poor very dull and could only hear what was going on in the kitchen would not go back again very upset

First and the last time buying takeout from thai train . Beef dry and hard to chew. Vegetables overcooked. Spring roles too oily. Not impressed.
Olivia
Service was quick and prices are not too bad, but unfortunately the beef was so tough it spoiled what would've been a quite nice ginger stir-fry takeaway meal. Wouldn't order beef again.
Anna
Yum yum yum. We tried this Thai restaurant for a work lunch. We had everything takeaway and had it in our own office so I can't comment on the decor or the service but I can tell you that the flavours were excellent. <br/>Well balanced and well seasoned.

Nestled in the new block of shops in Mt Wellington (Cnr Penrose Rd / Mt Wellington highway), Thai train is what this area is missing. Reasonably busy on a Saturday night it proved to be more popular for takeaways. We dined in and the staff were a bit flustered when we arrived. They were slow to serve but wait times were minimal for our food to arrive. We ordered the Garlic and ginger tofu stir-fry and the Chill basil tofu stir fry. At $12.50 each including rice we were pleasantly surprised as they were decent portions too. Each dish had plenty of flavour and were quite tasty. Our favourite out of the two was the Chili basil as we loved the sauce - spicy and sweet. They have a good menu with plenty of meat, seafood and vegetarian options. <br/>Cheap and cheerful - worth a visit if your in the area.

Thai Train in Mt Wellington is perfect for a delicious takeout meal. They have great fresh food that is a generous size for what you pay! Quick and friendly service!

Got takeaway from here many a times. Food is fresh and quickly prepared. I love their thai curries (try the massaman!). Its also great that the curries come with a portion of Jasmine rice at no extra cost. Overall you'll find delicious value for money meals here.
Shiksha Sridhar
Really enjoy eating at this place. My husband and I have done takeaway from here multiple times. For the price you pay, the proportions are amazing and with every curry/stirfry, you receive a free portion of rice. We consistently have the Penang Curry or the Red Curry from here and both don't disappoint. Though the curry is a little bit watery, the taste is great.<br/><br/>You can sit down here should you wish, but we generally prefer to get takeaway and have it at home. A great local find!

Pretty good thai place. Uses good ingredients which you can taste in the curries - lime leafs etc which cheaper places don't bother with. Have been here once myself and family have been twice with both being very good meals. So far have tried the, veggie spring rolls and curry puffs, chicken cashew stir fry, duck red curry (really good), red vegan curry which they were happy to make especially and the sweet and sour pork stir fry.Definitely our go-to local now :)
Nomnomnom
Big fan of their drunken noodles and curry puffs. Chefs are great. Spring rolls are abit over priced and use to be nice until I found a store that has the best spring rolls in town. Frontline staff could work on their customer service skills though. The girl at the front serving people needs to work on smiling and her tone of voice. However the younger boy is great he usually walks out of the store when food is ready looking for the customer and hands it to them. Maybe he can give her a few tips?

Consistently good value and delicious. Great friendly staff. Cannot wait to try the rest of the menu, especially the appetizers. Thanks alot

So amazing! I've had it 3 times now and every time it's been delicious and consistent. Amazing people there who look after their customers. Would definitely recommend.

Tried their food twice untill now. Only pad thai chicken i liked most...other foods are not my type. Reasonable and fast service. Will try pad thai only.

Authentic Thai food. Does takeway and restaurant (no alcohol). Had perfect Tom Yum soup and my wife had a perfect Pad Thai. The place to go if you look for the real thing.
FJ
Maybe more of a takeaway place as while there are a few seats it didn't feel like a sit down kind of place. The meals were great though. Fish cakes to start with and then 2 mains of beef massaman curry and shitake mushroom. Curry was flavoursome. Maybe a little watery than some restaurants I've been too but nice flavour. Would go back but have a take out instead.

We tried yesterday for the first time, as we were looking for a thai takeaway in this area. We ordered a Chicken PadThai and a beef Massaman curry. It was really good and both portions were very generous (I didn't finish mine and reheated it later, it was still delicious). The beef wasn't dry at all and was spicy as wanted. The only thing is I expected more veges in the PadThai, as there are only beansprout and coriander. <br/>We payed $25 for 2, the food is good, sure we'll go again !!

This place is make delicious thai food. Generous portion and the price is reasonable. I love the duck curry and must try entree.<br/><br/>I do like the interior deco. Place is tidy n the colour around the room is fun. You can dine in or simply have a takeaway. <br/><br/>We have our food there because of the atmosphere and there is plenty of seats. <br/><br/>It will be nice if they do have a small area for self-service water...😉 for us who doesn't want to spend on drinks and enjoy the food ♨<br/><br/>Overall...will definitely recommend and come again to try other dishes.

Impressed by the freshness of the food - it looks and tastes fresh, and you can see the ingredients as they cook them. I've had a couple of the stir fries, pad thai and curries - all good. My dad loves the duck curry, and I just finished the cashew stir fry which was delicious. Quick, tasty, and friendly service. Agreed with review below, it's better for takeaway, but it also kind of tries to have that street food vibe you get from asia. Obviously not repeatable from a corner in Mt Wellington, but I quite like it in a quirky kind of way.
Elle
Superb and very reasonably priced. They actually stirfry the dishes fresh - you can tell by the texture of the vegetables and meat that it's not a reheat (many places precook and just reheat when orders come in and you get leathery meat and soggy veggies). Prices are about 2-4 bucks cheaper than its counterparts in the area. Very clean but not a good place to sit down and have a meal as there's 3 seats (2 are park bench) and are at awkward heights. However, overall, as a takeaway place - solid 4 on the dishes!
Aleesha
Thai train has just opened up around the corner from work so decided to give it a go and take some home for dinner. Got the Penang curry and satay which came with free rice, drunken noodle and the mixed appetiser this was more than enough for 3 people and only came to $43.50. The food was REALLY good and flavoursome. Will definitely be going back again! Lunch tomorrow maybe!!
