Review Restaurant Indonesia - Napier

Arlene Barraca
Great food, quality customer service and affordability all in one. We never regretted coming to this place after our travel from Wellington to Napier. Indeed, our quick stay was pleasant and awesome. Amazing ambience. You’ll learn Indonesian culture and other countries. You feel good about the treatment of the owner. She was on top of everything! Highly recommended when you are in Napier. 👍
Lisa Brown
We tried the mixed vegetable and chicken lumpia; chicken satay and curly prawns as starters. For main meal we had mid aceh fried noodles with chicken, prawn and egg. EVERYTHING was delicious and so flavorful! Highly recommend this gem!

No trip to Napier would be complete without a meal at Restaurant Indonesia. The Rijsttafel is a unique flavour adventure which must be experienced. The owners are clearly passionate about delivering a high quality, authentic and delightful dining experience.

Really friendly welcome, nice and warm inside on a cold winters night. We had Rijsttafel for 3, it was perfect. And the Spekkoek spiced cake for dessert was great. We'll visit again.
Inge Vergroesen
We had the “rijsttafel” tonight and oh my word, it was absolutely divine, best restaurant meal we’ve had in years! If you don’t know the Indonesian kitchen you must try, if you do know it you will agree with me that this is one of the top kitchens. Our host was very welcoming and he shared insights, loved it.

Absolutely amazed and delighted that we dined here on our trip to Napier. The service, cuisine and the overall experience was outstanding. The hosts were attentive and engaging with stories about the decor. The opening crackers and sambal were a delightful surprise. After the Rijsttafel which is the 11 course experience we received a complentary dessert which was light and refreshing.

Awesome Indon food in NZ! My best meal yet! We visited the resto on our first day at Napier (3A2C) and had the Ultimate Rijsttafel and the seafood one, as well as a nasi goreng and an entrée (Soto Ayam). Every dish was impressive with the level of spices (it’s the fragrance of the herbs and spices added, not so much of spicy hot). Kudos to the owners for such effort and service!
Norman Tutaki
Great service. Weren't too sure on some of the food that was served up. Would we go back? Most probably because the service was excellent. Recommended to all.

In Napier for the weekend and decided to eat in for the first night. What a great decision to get our mela from here. Absolutely delicious meal. Everything ordered was amazing! Definitely try this establishment.

Everything feels like home, from the ambience to the food! The food is so yummy especially Mie Goreng with extra Ayam Goreng and Corn Fritters (Bakwan Jagung). Definitely worth the drive from Palmy. Terima Kasih. 😊😊😊

Drove 5.5 hours just for the food as I heard raving reviews about it and was certainly not disappointed. The food was to die for and the lady boss and staff were amazing! My only regret was that I am only here for a few short days during Christmas and won't get to dine there again as they are closed during the Christmas period. I will certainly be back again and will stay longer just for the food. No longer homesick for Malay / Indonesian food. Thank you!

Amazing food. Incredible service. Lovely atmosphere. Beautiful set up. My favorite restaurant in the bay by far. The staff are lovely. This restaurant deserves 6 stars.

Thank you for the beautiful meal tonight....awesome flavours. Great service. Beers were nice and cold too.
Mani Maniparathy
Great place. Authentic Indonesian food, artifacts and service. Beautiful atmosphere. This is my second visit, while traveling through Napier. The new owners are better than the great chaps who were running before.
Pedro Tigchelaar Lourenço
Amazing food and wonderful hosts. Truly recommend this restaurant. Definitely suggest to have de rijsttafel so you can experience a lot of different flavours of Indonesia

Probably the best meal I have had in 19 years of eating out! Attentive staff and great atmosphere

Have had dinner here several times and absolutely love it! The rijsttafel is a unique way of trying out lots of different delicious types of Indonesian food. Friendly service and yummy food makes this a must if you are in Napier!

This place is an amazing experience, the Rijsttafel is awesome! Staff are brilliant and the owner is a cool Dutch dude :-)

The food was excellent but the service really let it down. We booked a table for a banquet for my mother's birthday and two of our guests did not arrive as they had a medical emergency and had to be rushed to the emergency department. I do not appreciate that my mother was yelled at for not notifying staff that we were two people short and if we had told staff, they could have used the table for someone else (eventhough we had 14 people present). She was then overcharged for her meal by $13 and reimbursed with a bag of lollies???? Will only be back after it is under new management.

First trip to Napier and discovered this gem by accident. Amazing flavours, good service. We'll definitely be back!

What an amazing dining experience. Very personable staff and delicious food. Best iced tea ever, as well.

Really happy to find Rijsttafel here in NZ. Rijsttafel is a Dutch version of Indonesian ‘Nasi Padang’ where you get a lot of small plates of food. They have option for meat, fish, mix, and vegetarian. Service was really friendly. Taste yum !
Liam Moloney
Authenic Indonesian is hard to come by in NZ, but these guys do it with hospitality as if they are having you to dinner at their home. The menu allows you to sample a large number of different items at once at a reasonable price. Really enjoyed my time at resturant Indonesia.

Feels like a family oriented resturant. My partner and I went while on a trip to Napier and had the fish curry, Nasi Goreng, and the sticky rice pudding dessert Friendly staff, the food was great and, and while not the cheapest, worth the price. It's great for a special occasion. The chef and staff came out to check on us and also they explained where the food came from. Great prawn crackers too, which were given out while we waited for the food which was nice. The only thing was that it took about 10 mins to be seated as it was a busy night. However they made up for it. It was also Indonesian independence day so we all got some free souvenirs too :)

We got lucky as we planned for early dinner around 6pm.This place got so full by the time it was 7pm. So a sound advice please make a booking if you plan to visit this place. The staff was friendly and food was good in quality as well as service was fine. The only place where I felt it lost my points is at the price compared to food quantity I personally felt the portions to be small. That maybe coz I have a great appetite for good food 😉. But yes if you are keen on trying a different cuisine along with some nice artifacts around this is the place to be.

We had meat and fish rijsttafels. Beef rendang, lamb stew, chicken satay, spiced chicken and the corn fritters are so delicious that we could have eaten a truckload! Sweet and sour fish, curry fish and fish skewer are cooked perfectly and they are very nice. Gado-gado is very tasty. Warm and friendly service. Highly recommended!
Ziax Ziax
one of the best restaurant in town. on Google it sits at no 1 in Napier and I have to say well deserved. vegan nasi georeng is the best item that I liked here...

First time here and my first Impression of this place is gorgeous! Starting from the main entrance of the interior through the diner are just phenomenal with the Indonesian Javanish touch. And the restaurant are situated by the seaside so added more to the Bali feel. We ordered the Meat Rijjstafel recommend by the lovely owner which consist of 12 different type of meat and we love every single bite of it! This is place is just amazing from their food to the atmosphere and service it just hard to fault.

Atmosphere: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Food: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Few restaurants in the world deserve 5 stars, this one, being owned by a Dutch couple and transformed into actual authentic Indonesian restaurant, definitely does. We grew up with Javanese cuisine, eat Indonesian food regularly and understand the food is different on the many different islands of Indonesia.
The food here reminded us of home. The peanut sauce is not your typical Western peanut sauce (which we call fake) but the real deal. We had the fish and vegetarian rijsttafels and also soto ayam. The soto was actually made from 🐔 by slowly cooking it's bone. We were surprised to learn the husband, Dutch white guy, did the cooking. Don't be mistaken, this is not a couple assuming to be able to cook Indonesian. They actually had many cooking lessons on several islands of Indonesia and spend lots of time traveling through Indonesia. They still go back regularly and keep learning more and more about the food. They probably have much more knowledge about Indonesian food than most Indonesian chefs. They have to cope with the fact many ingredients are not available but in our opinion they did very well with local ingredients. Napier is blessed with this Dutch couple and their humbleness. A visit to their restaurant is a must do in Indonesia. Anyone saying bad stuff about the food is either talking about a different place (its 3 yrs old or less) or has no clue.

My husband and i came here for dinner and we ordered the fish and meat rijsttafels. The quantity was good for two people and the quality of food is great! We love the concept of rijsttafel because we get to have a taste of everything! The ambience of the restaurant is cozy and the staff was friendly and helpful, always have a smile on their faces :)

Tip: make a reservation! The place is pretty full!

Visited in March to celebrate Daniels birthday and must say we weren't disappointed. Ordered the Rijsttafel banquet and enjoyed working our way through all of the small tasting plates. Great option if you can't decide what to try. Also a great touch that meals come with 4 dishes of various spicy sauces and relishes so that you can add heat or spice to your own preference.
Renee Lange
Lovely family dining experience with good food, lovely friendly service and a slightly different experience to the usual. The fish curry and satay (which is on several dishes in the rijstafel option) were standouts for us.

Restaurant Indonesia is situated in a converted house along picturesque Marine Parade. The interior is decorated with numerous Indonesian and Dutch artifacts. We booked ahead and watched the restaurant fill up around us during our meal. The rijsttafel options looked appealing but we weren't hungry enough to sample the many small dishes on each menu so opted for main courses instead. Our meal began with a complimentary selection of condiments (sweet sauce along with medium, hot and very hot) served with onion crisps. The sauces are available for sale at the front counter. I had rendang padang (slow cooked beef) served with sides of rice, beans (to replace the capsicum dish) and toasted coconut, peanuts and spices. The flavours went together really well. My partner ordered sweet and sour fish fillets that also came with similar side dishes. We were both pleasantly full after our meal with no room for dessert. Our service was very fast and efficient; we were moved along quickly. Also, be aware that the restaurant is NOT BYO.
Dee
Beautiful food! We tried the rijsttafel option when we were there and was blown away by the presentation and the flavour. It was flavoursome and I enjoyed every bite of each dish. They also make their own chili and sauces which also available for purchase. The owner is really lovely. He looked after us very well. Also this place is always full and booking is advisable. Thank you so much and we will be back :)

Just came back from this restaurant. Didn't deliver according to me and my wife. Decor top class but food not the same.satay chicken tasted like rubber over cooked chicken. Peanut sauce bad. I ordered Nasi goreng. People do not try this dish. Taste full of cumin powder has a over powering taste. I couldn't eat it. Mentioned this to the owner didn't receive an apology come on guys the reason I visited you is because of your rating and it wasn't the case. I love Indonesian food and being from Wellington we have a fare share of Indonesian restaurant around. So I know the cuisine well. We didn't finish our food I feel like I have wasted $60 tonight.
Veganista
Absolutely amazing food! I always ordered the vegetarian rijsttafel, but let them know I was vegan, so the waiter always informed me of what was vegan friendly. I loved being able to eat lots of different things, all of which were delicious! I was never able to finish all of my food and when I got home I was so disappointed I had left all that yumminess behind. The hosts were so welcoming and friendly and made you feel just like family/friends. The restaurant is small so you are very close to other diners, but other than that the interior is a sensation for the eyes and the food for the mouth.
Heidi
Really enjoyed my dining experience here. Opted for the supreme rijsttafel. Really enjoyed all the dishes. The coffees were a treat as well. Being a NZ born dutch girl, I was really excited to try this place out (dutch food). Super filling, managed to finish all the dishes but could hardly move. Love to go back if I am back in Napier again.
Epicurious Nomad
Interesting food. Seems like a decent value but ??? The people who started this gem were wonderful. Now its just fine. Go once to try but I haven't been back. It is well located. Need to change the wine list!

The restaurant are situated on Marine Parade right by the beautiful beach in Napier. The decorations at the entrance is very attractive with the Barong creature as their logo. Not to mention, the interior was equally detailed with Indonesia artefacts.

We've got extremely lucky to walk in on a Sat night and they had just one table available for two before another troops flooded through the door. Recommend booking in advance.

Our appetite weren't as good as we thought, so we've ordered a sateh and two mains to share. Otherwise, I recommend you to try their full course/tasting meal for only $30.

We've ordered Sateh Dageng Sapi, Semur Ayam Tomat and Asam Manis Ikan (green sands for our drinks). If you're not a spicy eater, please let them know during your order. The food was well presented, the aroma filled the air and certainly made us ate more than we should.

Excellent to see professional kitchen standard in Napier. We will definitely return to try the full course menu.

Had a very pleasant evening hosted by Kees. We opted for the Rijsttafel (meat) $29.95 per head. Gave opportunity to try everything on menu. Service was exceptional, as was the meal.

Rated no. 1 on TripAdvisor, it shouldn't be. Bland overcooked and stewed food, particularly the vegetables. Not at all my experience of SE Asian food.
I suggest the reason for the high ratings may be the novel way of serving lots of little dishes at once. Quite an experience for people who haven't had the privilege of travelling to SE Asia and trying the regional cuisines. My suggestion would be, avoid it and ask a local where to eat.

This place is a gem! Try the Rijsttafel its a banquet menu ! Small serving dishes all placed on your table and the tastes is soo good! The owner is a character ! He is passionate about the place ! Love it and has always returned when I am in the area !

We came into Restaurant Indonesia last night for dinner, the service and atmosphere were fantastic. We would recommend trying the Rijsttafel, this is a great way to try lots of Indonesian dishes in one sitting ! There was also a great selection of wines from the Hawkes Bay.

We had an excellent dining experience on what must be the busiest night of the year in Napier, the Saturday of Art Deco weekend. Two of the four us are vegans and we really appreciated the attention to detail by the owners, chefs and wait staff. It was a delicious, tasty, very filling meal for the vegos and for the meat eaters who, it has to be said, were very happy to tuck into the vego dishes as well. We polished off the lot which, unfortunately, left no room for dessert. Thanks. We look forward to returning.

We had a lovely dinner "experience" at this restaurant last night.
We were welcomed by the owner to his (what almost looks like) a small museum, full of Indonesian Cultural artifacts. Followed by a friendly staff member explaining the menu. Being familiar with the concept of Rijst-tafel we were very pleased with the many tasty, some hot some cold, little dishes we got. Which again got explained by our pleasant waiter Brenden.
Although these dishes look small on their own, they add up to quite a meal, which we could just finish. We had to pass on the baked banana dessert I set my eyes on....So we will have to go back another time ;-) Thank you for a great evening!
Mark Ross
Feral food, not doing the world a flavour...

Went to this restaurant in the weekend, our table had the meat, seafood and vegetarian multiple selection plates. Most of these looked like and tasted like stodgy heat n eat mini-meals straight out of the microwave.

No fresh, light and tasty spice dishes here. Even the rice was dry and limp.

Yep service was pretty friendly but can't understand why this place appears to be so highly rated?!
Kirsty Andrews
We ate at Restaurant Indonesia for my niece's birthday after swimming with sharks at the aquarium. The restaurant staff were extremely friendly and welcoming. We had the supreme rijsttafels which was a feast of multiple Indonesian dishes including seafood and meat dishes. It was amazingly delicious and a wonderful experience as we had not ever had Indonesian food before. We highly recommend this restaurant. A++++++++++ :D
Marie Banks
Awesome experience, chosen due to wanting to try something different and drawn in by the unique archway to the restaurant. Ordered the "supreme Rijsttafel" as we couldn't decide on meat or seafood and really enjoyed the experience. Friendly and efficient service from all staff and will def. return next time we are in Napier. Also loved the humor of the restaurant.
Alison Cowell
Just had the most gorgeous vegetarian food at this lovely restaurant. I've not been here before....but I will be back! All too often vegetarian dishes are simply vegetables in 'something' (usually pasta!)....so I was blown away by the variety of little dishes that were presented....superb! Great food, great hosts :)
Stephen
Fantastic meal and experience. Authentic food in lovely surrounding making it a great atmosphere for dining.

From the moment you arrive you are made to feel welcome and the food is to die for!

Outstanding food, great value, wonderful service.

We will be back!

What a unique experience it is here! We had a great meal, with a nice choice of wine to match the food - thanks Kees for the recommendation! Of course we had to try the Rijsttafels (had the meat version) and it was definitely worth the visit!! So lovely to be able to try a range of flavours and mix of vegetables and meat - it was all so tasty! Will definitely be back, only have good things to say :)

We chose the Rijsttafel - a selection of dishes. What a treat; a delicious combination of flavours served with a recommended wine and a Hawkes Bay Pilsner. Great service and friendly staff. All this and a view of the ocean. An easy recommend!

We visited for dinner with our two kids and enjoyed the riisjtaffel which was a good way to sample many things. There was a good combination of items and some unusual things that we have never tried before. The portion sizes were just right and we all enjoyed the meal (Both kids ate fantastically).
The service was friendly and entertaining. We'd go back for sure but next time try some of the other menu items like nasi goring - that looked good.

As a Dutchman living in the US I got the surprise of my life when I sat down and enjoyed the very best rijsttafel I have had since I left the Netherlands 20 years ago, and better than many that are served in that country today. In addition to the great food Joss, Kees and their staff are most hospitable. It may take a while, but I'll be back!
Jade :-)
We dined here over the weekend. I was initially not going to write a review but feel like I have to. We had a supreme riisjtaffel and thought the meat dishes were very nice. However, when it came to the seafood, we were very unimpressed. Even though the flavours were not to our liking the mussels and shrimps were extremely tough. we won't be back.
Nick
Once again my wife and I travelled from Auckland to Napier to enjoy the food and service at this establishment..........this time we brought my brother-in-law and his wife. Once we had eaten the riisjtaffel they understood why we have driven to Napier 4 times in the last 2 years just for this "taste sensation" and great value. You are guaranteed full bellies here! Each dish is different and thoroughly enjoyable. Great hosts, great food, great prices and always well worth the trip.
Dave
We took the whole family to Napier for the weekend and decided on something a little different. This restaurant is great. The ristaffel is what we chose and we were not disappointed. The kids loved the food and it was great value. We will visit here again for sure. Can't say enough good things about the service.
Patrick W
Restaurant Indonesia offers a cozy venue with phenomenal food. The service is terrific - very friendly. The riistaffel is their signature dish, and I'd highly recommend it - you get to sample your way through a bit of everything, and each dish is worthy of a full main course.

I'd return there again in a heartbeat; in fact, I'm sure I will be back!
Donna Hengeveld
On a May weekend away to Napier we dined here on the recommendation of a colleague. It reminded us of rijstafels we've enjoyed in Amsterdam. Given the opportunity of additional trips to Napier, I have been back twice in June. The people make you feel so welcome and the ambiance is that perfect blend of the exotic and the familiar. I heartily recommend Indonesia - and you can take some ingredients home to create your own rijstafel.
Mike Brown
Great meal and superb service
I love authentic ethnic food and this was great
I will definitely visit again when I am back in Napier
Joss and Kees are great and the atmosphere is fantastic
F
We went to Restaurant Indonesia on our first trip to Napier. Tried the rijsttafel, which was very interesting and tasty. It was more food than I could finish. I also liked the four condiments that came with the meal. The restaurant is worth a visit for something different.
Mary Ellen Warren
A relaxed setting and knowledgeable host made it an enjoyable and gluten free dinner. "Heck gluten free is easy" said our host, "tomorrow I am providing a sugar and salt free meal." A courageous host, excellent food.
Jacqueline Spiller
We visited the Restaurant Indonesia on a busy Easter weekend, my husband and i had our 1 1/2 year old and our 4 month old baby's with us, What a fantastic place, upon entering we were greeted with a warm welcome and seated in a nice private area, we opted for the supreme rijsttafel a mixture of fish and beef dishes, all i can say is wow! I was brought up in a restaurant and find it hard to find somewhere great to eat with beautiful flavours, this meal was the best I've had for a very long time, the host was fantastic making sure every need was met with a smile and friendly banter, i can't wait to visit Napier again just to go there, thank you to the hosts so much for a lovely evening.
Gary&Elaine
Oh the food, the atmosphere, the waiting staff are all to dine for.
We have had family, friends and just a intimate dinner for two.
Fabulous experience every time. You just can not walk past the excellent food atmosphere and service, definitely will keep going back, no other compares.
thank you Kes and Joss.

I was in Napier for the Mission Concert in the weekend, not really sure of where to go for dinner I did a google search and randomly found this restaurant. I thought wow there are some good reviews here, and phoned and got a booking. My partner and I enjoyed a quick stroll down from the Quality Inn, we were welcomed by Kees and offered menus and and drinks and Kees suggested we try the Rijsttafel Supreme at $36 a head, as both Steve and I are not good at making decisions we thought this sounded like a good option - Wow what a great decision, we have both been to many restaurants before but this food was amazing - little bowls of everything. I had a bottle of wine with dinner which was very reasonably priced at $22, Steve's beers also were very reasonable at $6 each. The service was great, there was another table of 4 diners next to us also first timers who also really enjoyed their food as well, they also entertained us through the evening! All I can say is fabulous experience, shame you are not in Auckland and next time we are in Napier will definitely be back - Thank you from Sandy and Steve
Keith Den Hollander
Really enjoyed the unique and delicious food. Lots of different flavours and levels of spice. Friendly service and ambient surroundings. Good selection of beers and wine at very reasonable prices. Cant wait to go back next time we are in Napier. Highly recommend the rice table for two with its ample selection of different dishes both meat and vegetarian..
Anna
I just got back from eating at this restaurant and couldn't wait to rave about it. It is the best restaurant I've ever experienced. We had the rustoffel (rice plate) which included about 20 different dishes to taste and choose from, and you could make everything as spicy (or not) as you pleased. All dishes were delicious and the staff were more than pleasant. I'll definitely be going back.
Jill Norman
Went there for my birthday Tuesday night. Got there a bit early and Kees was very welcoming even though he hadn't even had time to turn the lights on. We had a fabulous night at my favorite restaraunt. The food was "Deliciousimo" and that is an understatement. We love this restaraunt and recommend it to everyone. Thanks again for a wonderful night.
Lisa
I've been coming here when visiting Napier for many years. The latest owners have carried on the great food and service. Throughly recommend the supreme RIJSTTAFEL, such a journey through many taste sensations. The service is great and friendly. The wine list has many local wines and at very reasonable prices. but ultimately it's the food that draws us back, even the kids got into it! Make sure you book to guarantee a table.
Leanne
My partner and I were wandering past Restaurant Indonesia while we were visiting Napier this weekend. As we walked past we smelt the most amazing smells coming from this restaurant. We were looking for somewhere special to spend my birthday meal and decided we would give the fancy pants winery places a miss and book into this place the following day. We were SO pleased we did! From the moment you enter the place you feel welcome and the atmosphere was very relaxed and friendly. We are both foodie people and can be quite critical at times as we are cooks ourselves. This met all our expectations. I only went in to have a nasi goreng but was very pleased I changed my mind to the Rijsttafel which is a selection of small plates of Indonesian food. It was an experience I will not forget. We will definitely travel back down from Auckland to have it again - it was that good!
What was good about it? The food, the atmosphere, the waiter and the host of the place who didn't rush us and gave us good advice such as to take our time when we ate and to not rush to leave once we had finished and to take as long as we wanted to enjoy ourselves at our table.
All I can say is well done - I don't write reviews but I am very pleased to write this one. Well done to everyone involved in this little gem!!! Leanne & Paul

We are Malaysians living here and was really amazed with the food....authentic! Friendly service, great decor and the food is wonderful - all at a good price too. We will love to again some time soon :) Highly recommend it!!
Nick
This place is a taste sensation! Thoroughly enjoyable and be prepared to leave very full. My wife and i have, at least twice, travelled from Auckland to Napier for the purpose of eating at Restaurant Indonesia......it is that good.
Caren
We arrived 10 minutes earlier than the usual opening time (without a reservation), and were made very welcome.

The meal and service were brilliant - well recommended!
Janine Kamphuis
An extremely tasty food sensation coupled with excellent service!

We had the rijsttafel supreme. The food came out very quickly and the description of each dish, by the waiter, was very helpful. There was plenty of food to feed the army of people we took with us. A very pleasant experience was had by all.
Nikki Gordon
Thoroughly enjoyed our meal, we turned up later in the evening without a booking, they acknowledge they were pretty full, only 1 person front of house and that service may be slower, didn't matter at all..our banquet meal was fantastic!!! The waiter was extremely friendly and funny, very helpful with menu options and explained our dishes as he brought them out, would recommend to anyone - give it a go, we will be going back - several times i think..
Stephen Pogson
My wife and stumbled on this restaurant because it was programmed into the speed dial of our hotel telephone. I checked it out on Tripadvisor and I couldn’t believe my eyes.
We were greeted by a warm and smiling face and told about the Indonesian dining experience that is Rijsttafel (rice table). All was explained and in no time at all, we were immersed in exotic foods and the aromas and the textures, that are an essential part of Indonesian dining culture.
The accolades are true and there is not much that hasn’t been said. It was a truly unique dining experience and it is one that you should not miss.
Our Rijsttafel was around twenty small ‘experiences’, plus condiments, plus rice that are delivered in small dishes and kept warm on the table in special heaters. You sample at your leisure the wonderful array of foods that you have in front of you.
Make sure that you allow plenty of time for this pleasure filled experience and make sure that you are hungry.
Thank you Joss and Kees, the next time we are in Napier will be the next time we will visit your establishment. Your restaurant is a diamond and we can see why it has been going since 1983.
Nico Anders
A friend and I walked past around 4pm and it smelled so good that we agreed to go there for dinner. It turned out to be an absolutely fabulous dining experience. The people who worked there were very friendly and helpful, the decor was interesting and unique. My partner nor I had tried indonesian food before. We ordered the vegetarian meal to split. It came with SO many little dishes, each with a different and delicious flavor all its own. There was so much food, that we couldn't finish it all. Not by a long shot. I believe this big meal is 30$ per person. It is a good deal, considering you get to try over 10 little dishes. This would be a great place to go if you get the "munchies" if you know what I mean. Excellent food, great atmosphere, service with a smile. I will definitely go there again.
Megan
What a find! We just happened to stumble across this place, and I'm so glad we did. You have to get the Rijstafel - a tasting menu like no other! You have about 20 different small dishes brought to your table to feast on. Such a great meal.
Belinda Vandenberg
Fantastic location and service. The variety of dishes in the rijstafel was very impressive. Great all round dining experience - we love it. Only minus was that for me food could have been a bit spicier.
Kelli Walker
This was amazing!!! Beautiful food, very reasonable and extremely friendly staff.....Just wish I lived in Napier so I could go every week :( The atmosphere was also really great. I loved the taste menu, you get to taste so much....and it was all good. They also sell condiments which I bought 1 of each....so will try to recreate at home!
Paul Dutch
Going to this lovely restaurant is like going to a friends' home to eat a wonderful dinner that is made by caring people that make you feel welcome. The rijsttafel is an experience in both taste and social enjoyment. Lots of different small tastes of delightful flavours. Eating and chatting while gazing at the beautiful views of the ocean makes your dinner experience one to talk about long after you've been there. Thanks Jos and Kees for taking good care of us and our friends!
Lynn Twigley
Another lovely meal at the Indonesian, this place is a "must do" if you're in Napier. There's just no other place with this combination of ambiance and surroundings, awesome food and Kees's fun service! 6 of us dined yesterday evening, and all were happy as clams :)
Tony Vincent
We had a wonderful meal on Friday 21st. It was a very rare horrible day outside in Napier but we received a very warm welcome from the owner who delivered great service throughout the evening. Our main was the Rijsttafel Supreme. It was an outstanding mix of flavours and textures and there was more than enough in terms of quantity. We had never tried Indonesian cuisine and found it quite simply stunning!
We were advised not to have an entree with the Rijsttafel due to the quantity and this proved good advice as there was plenty for the two of us.
We did stretch our selves to a desert which was also lovely tasting. (The Waffle and the Pisang Goreng). Because it was our anniversary we topped it all off with an Indonesian Coffee and Spekkoek Cake (just a delight).
The atmosphere was cosy and un-rushed making the evening a delight all round.
Value for money I doubt this can be touched. I found the prices surprisingly low when compared to other restaurant prices we know of in Napier and across New Zealand. I would venture to say it must be one of the best value for quality restaurants in New Zealand.
Tony and Miralie loved this little gem and recommend it to those who enjoy quality food and service at great value.

This place gets 5 stars from me only because I can't give it 6. Words like "awesome" just don't do it. The rjstaffell is indescribably good, the atmosphere is fine, and the staff helpful, friendly and polite.
I will so be back!

And back I have been. Several times. Every visit involves new people, and every one of them is as impressed as I am. Restaurant Indonesia does not fail. Full stop.

We had a super dinning experience for 8 of us choosing the Meat and Fish Risttafel- ummm not sure of my spelling. Fabulous array of dishes, each with different texture, flavour, everything was fresh and full of flavour, I just kept on eating and eating. Totally recommend this delightful little restaurant.

A great way to introduce your taste buds to Indonesian food, especially the banquet meal, more food than I could eat...and that's saying something. whats more it's at an excellent price. Also the service was excellent and they made my family and myself very welcome.

The menu promises much & certainly delivers. A wide selection of Indonesian cuisine from the traditional Rijsttafel of delicious dishes served on candle warmers at your table, or choose from an extensive menu of soups, entrees, stays, mains & desserts. Fully licensed & most reasonably priced. Run by two hospitable Dutch fellows ( Kees Peters & Joss Lamers)
who are no strangers to the food & hospitality scene. This restaurant is great dining for intimate twosomes, families or groups.

A meal at Restaurant Indonesia is a very pleasant experience and one that does not hurt the pocket too much. Both food and wine are reasonably priced and of good quality.
The service is superb and the atmosphere pleasant and enjoyable.
