Review Milk & Honey - Napier

Anony Mouse
friendly staff and service, nice place for asian influenced food. bao buns are delicious, definitely a must-try. dumplings were ok but definitely have had better, filling was a bit bland and underseasoned.

Very nice restaurant with friendly staff and delicious food. The Korean chicken bao sandwich and the fried pork dumplings were delicious.

We had breakfast here on a recommendation during our holiday and had a lovely meal. The staff were friendly and the food was delicious!

2 dogs accompanied us so we sat outside on a cool day. Even so, the waitstaff attention was superb and we weren't forgotten a out as most patrons were seated inside. Great food and lovely coffee in a top HB location.

Very nice experience and great service. Had fried kfc chicken 17.5$ and the server very kindly corrected me that the serving is quite large and won’t need a main. Even though it’s listed in the entree. Taste was very nice although I took the spicy option, it was t very spicy. The sauce was ok. However the batter was very crispy and tasty. I also ordered dumplings and for 9$ u get six. U can mix and match and I had vege, prawn, chicken. And it was really nice. A little wasabi would have been great. Drink was a margarita (flop) 17$ For dessert I had pineapple tipsy cake and this Erving was huge too. 2 people can easily share. 15.5$. Flat white small 4.5$ this ws ok. Overall definitely worth visiting and trying various item.

I was with some girlfriends in Hawkes Bay for the weekend and we wanted a healthy yummy brunch before going to the airport. Not locals so used Google to choose. Wow it was everything we hoped for. Top food, service and ambience in a lovely area just north of Napier city. A gem for sure!

Such unique food - so well cooked and great flavor. Not surprised they were fully booked. Lovely staff found us outside table and food arrived promptly - will be back!

Great location across from the shores of Ahuriri Point, this cafe' offers quiet relaxing modern environment. Food is top notch and well presented as well could not fault the service that was genuinely friendly and efficient. Well Done Team!

Had lunch at this place. Creamy mushroom with sourdough and Korean pulled pork. Great location and love atmosphere. Nice food and some asian cuisine are very distinctive.

Milk and Honey Restaurant. The wife and I went here on Saturday 18th. Again we found a place that we can enjoy. I ordered the Waikiki pizza. ( Hawaiian) That I found very enjoyable. The wife ordered the Korean pork with slaw. The wife raved about it saying how much she likes it. As for the staff, Rosie and Maia, you made it a great experience. As we watched the rest of the staff they smiled and carried on with their work in a friendly manner. What an amazing experience, just relaxed and took things as they happened. We shall be back

We stumbled across this absolute gem. All the food was delicious. We had spicy fried chicken, amaxing curly fries, raw fish and sliders. Everything was full of flavour and beautifully presented. Lovely staff and decor. Strongly recommend.

Really yummy vegetarian flatbread!! Great flavours and generous with the number of fillings. Real cool space, although the bathrooms could’ve done with a better clean!

Milk and Honey is a great all day eatery with a lovely selection of breakfast, lunch and dinner! I've been twice for their dinner which has a great selection of classic Kiwi affair (I've had the steak and market fish) with an Asian twist. Fried chicken and pork dumplings were on the menu and they were actually cooked super well! The dishes were full of flavour and great in portion size. The ambience was also lovely and overall it's a great casual dining venue. :)

We tried Milk & Honey twice in one day. We started with breakfast - streaky bacon and poached eggs (above average) and long macchiatos (good).

We went back for dinner - pork dumplings (good but not stunning), anchovy and chilli pizza (basically cheese top flat bread - it was okay) and guacamole (avoid at all cost - very little avocado but lots of beans and other weird ingredients)!

We finished with the salted fudge with XO Sherry (fantastic) and lemon sorbet (also fantastic).

Service was okay and the wine list is extensive but slightly on the high side for some of the more exotic wines.

Not a great experience for us I'm afraid. Sunday 27 Aug and those on either had very little knowledge or experience in their jobs or were not all that bothered. We (just my friend and I) went in, not too sure if we should wait to be seated or go for it, no one approached us so we asked what the deal was. They said to take a seat outside and they'd bring menus, but after quite a wait no one came. Went back inside, decided whatever was in the cabinet was probably going to be a safer option but even that seemed a bit difficult to manage and also involved a long wait (seriously, just hand the piece of cake to me when I pay for it, its much more efficient than forgetting and having to make 2 trips to me outside). I ditched the need for coffee as I really didn't trust them to actually deliver on it. Last time I visited milk and honey was way back in 2009 or 2010 and I remember it was an odd experience then too. Won't give it a 3rd time lucky try. I know it's not a big city but surely Napier can do better than this?

Great location and relaxed atmosphere... as well as good coffee! We ordered food from the pizza/dumplings place next door and it was great. Even the gluten free pizza base was delicious. Highly recommend the shar Sui chicken dumplings.

Great service, food was cooked to perfection. Especially recommend the venison - beautiful smokey flavour. Good wine matching advice for each course. Cosy low key eatery

Was looking for somewhere to have my Saturday morning coffee. Thought I would stop in at Milk and Honey. The placed was packed. I finally found a free table and savored the great coffee over the morning paper. I have been before and know the food is top notch. A full house shows its popularity. Would recommend.

A nice cafe with innovative menu ideas. We sat outside which was very pleasant, inside looked quite crowded, there were a large number of tables in a small space.
Staff were very good, and knowledgeable about the food and drink.
Impressive drinks menu with the excellent idea of providing 'light' cocktail which had lower alcohol and were also cheaper (even though the standard cocktails are very well priced)
The food was tasty and well presented. There was cabinet food if you just wanted a cake and coffee. The coffee was excellent.

Good takeaway coffee and really lovely staff :)
Great positioning by the beach in lovely little Ahuriri. Popular with the locals. Have yet to visit the second cafe, but I'm sure it'll be just as nice.

Good fresh food and reasonable prices. It always take too long to get a drink! Staff are friendly and professional. The wine list is good. The location is also very good. I go back often.

Milk and Honey is completely overrated and overpriced. We stay at the Crown Hotel when we come to Napier so have eaten here a few times. This morning will be our last- the most average breakfast we have ever had (they don't seem to be able to handle simple eggs on toast)- honestly, you could do better yourself. Very disappointing- would recommend walking over to the excellent Mahia St Cafe instead!

I have been here for breakfast twice, a few months apart, both times I was disappointed. The menu sounds nice but the food was tasteless. This time I had bruschetta with feta, avocado and tomato salsa. Sounds nice but was a third raw red onion which dominated everything, it needed seasoning, there was no dressing or anything to give some flavour. They didn't have children's portions so the breakfasts were far to big for kids and my children complained the pancakes were stodgy and too sweet. Beautiful setting, great building but consistently poor food. Will not be back.

Pizza is great, just needs a great beer to go with it.... Coopers is pretty good, what about a local craft beer, it is summer time!! come on get something with a bit more interest...........

Inconsistent service seems to be a common theme here. We arrived early morning when the place was half full. After waiting an hour (and long past finishing our drinks), we found that our breakfast had yet to be cooked?! Needless to say we did not wait around...! I would understand if the place was busy however, those who had ordered after us had been served. Disappointing as everything on the menu sounded great.

Staff were friendly the service was excellent. Our meal was superb we had Sushi Tuna entree, followed by Duck Confit and Wakanui grain fed beef, and Chai Pannacotta with Mint. The entire meal was yummy. Maitre D was very helpful in explaining the menu and matching wine.
Would most definitely go again.

Disgusting, the chef in plain view wiped his sweaty face then handled food, but that is in fact if he was a chef, rotten salad from a bag (and it was slimey yellow and rotten), and the serving size was not even enough to satisfy the smallest of eaters. Prices on the pathetic and dirty menu were not current, no main serves with veges they were all extra for $ on top, at least if you order pizza its cooked next door and from what I saw looked good. I would highly recommend that people do not eat here.............. if you value your dollar and want to eat not just smell and perhaps taste, but want to eat and be satisfied go somewhere else

I travel to Napier for Business on a regular basis. Milk and Honey was recommended for dinner. I did dine there and the food was great, however the service was below average. I ordered desert and wine to go with it. Desert was served and I was asked if I was waiting for anything else. I did remind the waitress that I had ordered desert wine. This never arrived! When paying the bill I told the person serving me that the desert wine was not served. The person couldn't take it off the bill so had to wait for the another person to come and sort this out.
I won't be rushing back or taking business clients there.

Great location but service very inconsistent. Waited 20 minutes for a coffee & it wasnt extra busy. 2nd coffee didnt arrive until we asked and then took another 10 mins.
This has happened at least twice to us now.

Wine great, service average nothing special, food- Pizza amazing chefs pasta horrible. only Time I would go would be to have wine and a pizza not to eat from who every cooked a pasta with lamb shank with no taste and charge $22 for it. They could of refilled our water - bad host responsibility

My capaccio was the best I've had, in at least 4 years! I love the dish and have had plenty!, loads of places try to fancy it up, but I'm quite content with the traditional rock salt, lemon, rocket, parmesan, olive oil meaty goodness that i usually expect, but...milk and honey delivered the outstandingly delicious variation i didn't expect! it was perfection. When i eat capaccio, i don't want to use my knife...at all! the meat should tear away easily with the accompaniments to scoop, until the last fork full of goodness that i can gather!
Then the confit of duck! beaut..til..icious cooked to perfection, accompanied by... your choice! mine, eggplant (aubergine) parmigiana, a dish very well respected, as well as, the waitresses', at last!!!! (they were (very much) a deterrent/stuck (right up!) before!!! Well done for 'kicking THEM to the curb!' Great food is waaaay too often tainted by 'Shite' service! Not any more at milk and honey, go there, and guaranteed something delicious, and a great experience...absorb this review, as i am just literally a random who loved it!

I really enjoyed this restaurant and I recommend it. I went for lunch on the Monday, and dinner on Friday. I was not disappointed.

Read full review on my blog http://napier4lunch.blogspot.com/2011/10/milk-honey.html

Last night 6 of us went to Milk and Honey. The atmosphere was divine. The service was incredible. and the food - OMG ... all 6 of us were extremely wrapped with our amazing our food was ...it was beautifully presented and so tasty. I had the steak, a few of the girls had the lamb and one had the fish. None of us could fault it. Thanks Milk and Honey for incredible food and service!

We were in Napier for a long weekend last weekend and stumbled on this great little cafe. We came back every morning for breakfast and cannot fault it. I for one don't mind paying a bit more for quality but found their prices no more than I would pay in Auckland. Great food - beautifully presented, and great coffee. Service from all the staff was professional, sharp and hugely friendly. No wonder the cafe was full each morning! First rate.

Went to Milk & Honey for the third time today, so we did give them a fair chance. The location is nice with great view at the Bay when sitting outside. But the temperature of the espresso machine is too high. You can taste that the ground coffee is burned. Another sign of the coffee being too hot is that there is no layer crema on top of the espresso.
Prices are of the chart. When ordering a fruit platter you don't expect it to be three cherries, two slices of pineapple, half a banana and two kiwi wedges costing $10.30! And don't get me started on the tiny bowl (or rather cup) of yoghurt and muesli which cost $ 12.40!
Although the staff is very friendly, we won't go to M&H again.

Milk and Honey is a popular place to go any time of day. If you've got a few hours, I'd recommend pulling up a pew, order a glass of Te Mata Coleraine or Coopers by the pint and watch the world go by. If you get hungry, start with a few assagi (Italian equivalent of tapas) to share and go from there. I have only ever been for coffee and a breakfast. I love the service and the staff are super friendly.
I enjoy their coffee which considering the bean doesn't normally excite me is saying something.

I will say the only thing that let them down is they mucked up my breakfast order, but overall they are brilliant :-)

we love this place! - have had dinner at M & H a number of times; - with friends, - with our young children, - and romantic table for 2, - service is always 10 out of 10 - they read the situation and deliver impeccably - the wine list is so varied and interesting - the food always really impresses us - the lamb shoulder is always a hit - keep it up!

Beautiful setting - had Signature Dish lamb pasta which was OK. It was a braised lamb dish set on Asian noodles which had not cooked properly...not bad enough to send back but not that great either. Service was great and other diners seemed to enjoy their meals thoroughly.

I have eaten here a few times and the service has always been very welcoming, the food delicious, and the affagato with vanilla icecream and liqueur the best dessert in town. I like the idea of the different tables for casual or more formal dining, and the art work is also inspiring. I ate out recently with a friend who works in a top NZ restaurant and she thought it was excellent. I like the industrial decor but as the room is all hard surfaces it does amplify background noise which can make it difficult for the hard of hearing to have an easy conversation if the place is busy. It doesn't affect the food or the friendliness though. And at the end of a hot Napier day there's a cool table by the window to catch a breeze and watch the evening gather over the bay.

I have yet to dine at Milk & Honey. However, if you are looking for a brilliant spot for your morning or afternoon coffee, lots of wine selections by the glass and relaxed music and attentive staff; Milk & Honey has these areas well covered. Owned and Operated by the famous and very hospitable Sean Burns, one of the best in the business. I look forward to the dining experience.
Brandon Nash
