Review The Frying Dutchman - Napier

Friendly staff, clean premises, crumbed Gurnard was fresh, both the crumbs and fish were absolutely delicious. I'm a chip connoisseur (addict) and the chips were how every chip shop nationwide should cook their chips - DELECTABLE! My new go-to when in Napier, highly recommend.

We came here for blue cod and we were not disappointed. The blue cod and chips was worth the wait (5 years since our last visit to NZ) and the blue cod did not let us down it was delish.

Best Fish and chips I've had in a long time. Fish was fresh and chips plentiful. The Dutch snacks also made the experience a unique one and it was nice we could sit down and eat

This is an iconic Fish And Chip shop that was previously based by the Surf Club. It moved to its current location and was sold to current owners. More importantly, the new owners appear to have stuck tried and true recipes. The batter is lovely and not greasy, chips are tasty and nice clean store. 😋 when in Napier this is my go too shop 👍

Possibly the best crumbed fish we have ever had! Juicy and generous fillets of fish in a crispy and tasty crumb. The fries were great too. Thank you!

Best F & C I've had in years! Now I can't eat F&C in my own hometown as I will be dissapointed.

Come for the food and ... you'll leave with good food. Great quality fish and chips with good selection of prime fillets and good portion sizes. Service was good. Atmosphere basic, but just outside you've got Napier Harbour which is pretty cool. I'll be back the next time fresh comfort food is required.

The best fish and chips I have had in a long time, and very friendly service. I was pleasantly surprised by the food quality. Give it a go, I will be back for more.

Nice place to be on a summer evening. Cool breeze off the harbour, warm sun shinning while my 2 tarakihi and chips are cooked. Very nice but could be better (batter was slightly overdone).

$15 Feed for 3 and still plenty leftover. A little oily but super delicious nonetheless. Drinks are abit overpriced so I recommend getting your drinks elsewhere.

Gurnard moist, well cooked and not over-battered. Chips nicely salted, crisp on the outside and soft on the inside. Over-all nicely cooked and probably the best fish and Chips I've had in a long time.

Clean and tidy place with good service but the price is so expensive! Fish was fresh and crispy. Chips were expensive with small quantities for both regular and kumara chips. Some other side dishes were also expensive as well. I’m not sure if I want to go back for fish and chips here when the price is like I can get better food from dine in restaurant.

Bacon burger contained no patty, simply bacon and salad. Fish and chips were wrapped 5 minutes before the rest of the order. Scoops of chips were adequate. Quite expensive for what you get.

OMG this has to be the best Burger i have had in a long time. It was perfect, right taste, texture, the fillings perfect. opted for the chunky fries, there where amazing as well. will defiantly be heading back here

I don't know what the others are on about. My partner and I were in Ahuriri for a casual date night and got hungry. This place knows how to make great fish and chips! The batter on the fish was so crispy and clean tasting! The garlic butter chips were PERFECT! I'm always disappointed with soggy battered fish and overly buttered chips (without garlic flavour). These guys do it right! Thanks guys! We'll defiantly be back!

I've pretty much been to every place in Napier for fish and chips. And I can say this is a great place taste wise, the fish and egg burger leaves you feeling not too bloated, not guilty for the fat content, it is very fresh and crisp, and is my absolute favorite, I usually drove out to Clive to order there but didn't realize Napier had one until of late. I usually drown the meals with tomato sauce. But can really agree that this is not needed when I've ordered from here. The thick chips are crisp and perfectly cooked. A bit on the expensive side when it comes to fish and chip takeaways. But when i want to treat myself this is surely the place for a quick meal for me. Always satisfied. 100% recommended the fish and egg burger with thick chips and a nice cold ginger beer. my cravings at the moment being pregnant.

This place seems more hype than anything else. Fish was reasonable. Was nothing outstanding but 30 minute wait for a small meal? Not sure what I was expecting but I'm sure there are better places around.

Pretty good fish and chips place. Reasonably nice interior, simple and looks clean, better than most fish and chips places. Food was good but nothing that wowed. Very standard fish and chips, and if that's what you're looking for, this is a good place.

Amazing fish and chips here! Best in the North Island! The freshest blue cod, good selection, and friendly staff. We always get these when we go to Napier for the day and have them on the beach

Recently bought some fish and chips at The Frying Dutchman, shocking we ordered 2 crumbed blue cod fillets and one scoop of chips, over 18 dollars. Only to discover when we got back to the Motel that we only had half a fillet with chips, what a rip off. We have informed the Motel, hoping that they do not reccomend them to any future customers.

This is our regular. Been there many times and never had a bad experience. The blue cod is the best fish i have ever tasted still to this day. Service is awesome. My wife is gluten free and they cater for that also which is quite unusal for fish n chip shops. Keep up the good work mark.

Went with an overseas visitor as it came highly recommended. What a let down.

Two words to describe the fish & chips - tasteless and soggy. Even kumara chips had no flavour! The batter for the fish was so soggy that it stuck to the non-stick baking paper it was put on for wrapping.

combined with some of the highest prices going made this one of the most disappointing fish & chip visits for many years.

They were closed during hours they advertised as being open, but to their credit they opened their doors for me, and the fish 'n' chips were great.

It really depends how long you are willing to wait for your takeaways. It is true we made our order during a public holiday (January 2012)- but...

In my opinion, nearly AN HOUR is too long to be waiting for a fish and chip order for three people.

In all, I think there may have been four staff preparing the food, calling the numbers and continuing to take orders. We were warned of a long wait (we thought maybe fifteen to twenty minutes was what they meant).

There was nowhere to sit and wait. The place was crowded with what looked like sit down diners. These were, we found out, people waiting for takeaways who had bought drinks, sat at tables and 'dug in'. Some were the worse for wear due to the length of their wait.

After half an hour we considered cancelling our order and going elsewhere but the glacial progression of order numbers kept us engaged enough to not give up.

Great food once it arrived. The FnC by the sea we had planned was scuttled as the length of time waiting saw us eating in the dark instead of at sunset.

Never again.

Great experience! lovely customer service, and lovely food. Thanks a lot we will be back !

Very disappointed. Expensive and not tasty at all. The fish was not fresh and very small pieces for the price. the chips were chewy and didn't seem fresh. The hamburger was a pattie with a chunk of lettuce thrown in and smeared with tomato sauce. We will never return.

We were absolutely disgusted at the lack of customer service we received at the frying dutchman in Ahuriri when returning an expired item to the manager who shouted and screamed irrelevant babbles at us..After the manager making a complete scene and putting up a fight we eventually received a refund, no apology with the manager completely missing the point of the item being expired and was more concerned about the fact that the item was opened – i suspect if the item wasn’t opened it would have been stocked for resale. We will never spend our hard earned money there again and our opinions will remain voiced to our family and friends.
