Review The Styx - Nelson

Delightful restaurant by the sea. I am completely impressed that my platter of 3 seafoods (fish, garlic shrimp, calamari) and chips was served so hot I actually waited a few minutes for it to cool off. Any restaurant that can pull that off gets 5 stars 🌟 in my book of eats. Staff is energetic and friendly, genuinely concerned that I was satisfied with everything.

Really lovely service. The Bloody Mary had a nice mild spice. The seafood chowder is one of the better ones I have had, highly recommend. Calamari coating had a nice crunch.

The meal was lovely just a little sparse. Seafood Combo was talked up as more than enough for 1 person and would feed 2 persons. When it came to the table we wondered if we had accidentally ordered a unknown half meal. Seafood Combo $34 Seafood Plate with 3 slices bread $32. 3 Beers and a Strawberry Margarita so $120. We will be back even if it is to try their Weekday Pizza Special at half price or even for a quiet Sunday drink. The view is idealic as you have an amazing view over Nelson Harbour. And the staff are lovely.

Nipped in for dessert and a coffee, fantastic service and food was excellent. We had the cheesecake. A very popular restaurant so would recommend booking in advance.

Lovely waitress. Took great care of us. Yummy food and cocktails (only wish they had oysters on the menu). Food came out pretty fast. The steak melt in your mouth, so good!. Venue nice on the wharf overlooking the water. Would definitely go back again.

Food was excellent! Very fresh. Highly recommend the pan fried fish and chowder. Also tried the crumbed fish and fish&chips. Were also good. Service was prompt and friendly. Situated next to the waters, we enjoyed the beautiful sunset after our dinner. Highly recommended. I will return.

Down from Auckland, visiting family and we went to dinner over Labour weekend. I’d been told the food was good. And it was superb! I ordered the seafood combo and it was perfect. The meal was served piping hot which was good, and the service was friendly and prompt. The atmosphere.., so we were seated inside, as was a long table with about 18-20 people at it, and it was so difficult to even have a conversation at our own table. So so noisy. Having big groups like that possibly requires an outside table or a separate room. Having said that, I’d happily go back for the food.

Does this menu ever change? In saying that, my fish of the day was really delicious and cooked perfectly. Had a bit of a wait for drinks, etc, can appreciate that it was a very busy night. Overall, everyone enjoyed their meals. Thank you, Stix.

Excellent food and friendly, helpful service. Great fresh seafood options which we all enjoyed. Chowder exceptional! Had a great spot outside with sights and sounds of people enjoying fishing off the wharf.

Fantastic friendly service knowledgeable. Food was not only well presented but the flavors to match. Have found our little go to place while we are here. Hungry just thinking about it!

I went to the Styx with my good friend. He is well known over there as one of his relatives works at that place. The setting by the harbour is great and when we arrived we were given the choice of two reserved tables. I believe that we got the best one since it was the one on the sunny side. The waitresses were quite pleasant and fairly attentive. They gave my friend and myself enough time to order. It was half price pizza Tuesday so we ordered pizza, a margherita. It was good however there was a bit too much tomato sauce to my liking so it felt a bit heavy. My friend was also disappointed with the margherita and he told me that other pizzas such as the Salmon one were much better. I would recommend this place if you are looking for some nice vista or for a special occasion as their menu is a bit on the pricier side. Specifically, their pizza selection.

A great way to finish the day in Nelson. Lovely food and pleasant, attentive and efficient service. I had seafood chowder, one of us had pizza and the others I think had mussels and steak. Great sitting looking out over the water. Food was just right to finish the day.

Although I love to eat out, it can be very daunting and exhausting for me. I was born with a rare Metabolic Disorder in which I cannot eat protein, my body cannot absorb it so therefor turns into poison and attacks my brain (to put a very long story short. Its is called PKU) This is all managed through diet.
My husband and I have just moved to Nelson and wanted to take him somewhere nice for his birthday and The Styx Kitchen Bar was recommended to us by friends and extended family.
There was nothing on the menu I could eat so I sent and email that day asking if they could prepare a salad for me (which is something I try to avoid due to the diet being so strict) and they were more than happy to help and offered a selection of different ingredients to create a delicious meal for me! It was almost overwhelming because I also had that sense of normality at the table having a big plate of food instead of ordering a side salad with no meat, cheese, nuts, eggs etc
I give these guys 100% and will definitely be back in the near future!

Great view, friendly staff and one of the best Seafood Chowders I've had in a long time - well seasoned and a good variety of seafood. The portions are very large so if you see small vs large - you're pretty safe with the small.

The place is very comfortable and generous. For the amount of staff compared to number of customers, it took a while for someone to come over and seat us and we were served and checked on by different people for the same things. But the staff were very polite and helpful.
Their portions are generous and arrived on time. We loved the coconut crumbed tiger prawns, the rib eye steak and pork belly. The fish of the day could've used a bit more blue cheese in the sauce and the chilli chicken pasta didn't have as much of a chilli punch. The highlight of the night was the rosemary creme brulee - it is to die for and we were left licking the bowl clean! Overall we were looked after and fed well after a long day of travel.

LOOKING FOR GOOD FISH N CHIPS? LOOK ELSEWHERE.
I'm currently on family holiday here in New Zealand with my parents. Beautiful sunny day, perfect for seafood and a cold beer, we thought! Went to Styx after reading the positive reviews here with high hopes, but they were shattered beyond words. We were seated upstairs on the balcony next to the window, waitress was super friendly and lovely. We ordered a beer and cocktail for drinks which arrived promptly. The ceviche came after, which was super delicious and good portion for the $18 price. This is the only dish I can recommend from our entire meal. Dad ordered the pan fried grouper which came with a large bed of salad. It was good flavour, not amazing, and the portion wasn't too bad for the $30 price. Mum and I both ordered the Seafood Combo. It sounds good, right? The menu said it had pan fried fish of the day, butter prawns, and crumbed calamari with chips and salad. And for a $28 price tag, I was expecting a restaurant quality fish and chips with plenty of flavours. I could not be any more wrong. The bare white fish fillet was literally the length of my palm, very thin in thickness with very light flavour. There were two prawns. Yup, that's it. Two prawns that are the length of my thumb, that tasted like they were dipped in butter. And the calamari? They were thin and over cooked, the quality of a below-average buffet. Chips were pretty meh, nothing special. The only thing I enjoyed was the salad, good flavour there. Upon first thought, perhaps they made a mistake? Nope, mum's plate looked exactly the same. All that for $28. This has to be the worst ridiculously-prices fish and chips I've ever had EVER, whether it's here on my holiday so far, or in Australia, or any other country I've been in. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. There's a fish and chip shop right next to it that is much much cheaper, at least from advertisement outside, and definitely more fish at least! The most appalling meal I've ever had in New Zealand to date. I was livid walking out, kept my mouth shut as not to take it out on the lovely waitress that was looking after us, and got KFC on the way back to the motel. I'll be leaving Nelson tomorrow and definitely will not be going back there for lunch.
(And if you're wondering, yes, I started an account here just to write this review.)

Good food and good service just took long time + a few extras didn't come to the table after we told them we were waiting overall 3 star....

Ordered the pizza and pork belly. The pizza tasted pretty good and the pork belly was decent. However, love the ambiance of the restaurant and the waitress who served us on Tuesday night 23/08 at second floor was really quick and friendly.

Yesterday me and my partner visited The Styx Kitchen as it was recommended by a friend. On first entrance the inside of the resuraunt was completely full (not a bad sign) so we had to sit outside. The heaters where on so it was very pleasant sitting on the solid wooden tables and chairs overlooking the water.
I had ordered the ceviche, unsure of the fish that was used but it was very tasty! Dressed in lemon, red onion and capsicum it was very simple but tasty. It came with a lightly dressed salad which was unexpectedly delicious mixed with the ciabatta bread with a small ramekin of salted butter. The butter was to hard to spread onto the bread unfortunately, but overall it was a very pleasant meal. 8/10
My partner had the seafood chowder which was a very generous portion might I add. The amount of seafood in the chowder was excellent with nice big pieces of prawn. He did have a beard on one of the muscles but again overall it was one of the nicer seafood chowders we have had.
9/10

We would definitely recommend this restaurant as it was recommended to us.
Good service, good food, good views!
Yes they do have local craft brews on tap, but the coffee addiction needed tending to. Love their enormous cheesy scone and flourless orange cake.

Good food and chilled vibe.. Had the scallop carbonara .. was beautiful! Didnt feel ill halfway like i normally do, and ended up scoffing the entire dish down. Also.. no food coma feeling at the end! Bonus. Vanilla panacotta with caramelised banana for dessert.. yummo!

I went here and had the seafood chowder. One of the best I have ever had! So generous with heaps of seafood. The waitress was thoughtful and funny and the owner was really nice. Nice vibe with the fire, and outlook to the ocean..Next time I go to Nelson I am definitely coming back!

I've now eaten here many times at different times for brunch, lunch and dinner.

The menu always has daily changing specials as well as lovely regular dishes.

The staff are always polite and accommodating and happy to help if something isn't quite as wanted - i.e offering to pan fry instead of deep fry calamari for a lower fat option.

Nice but still casual and welcoming of family groups with children

The location and view are stunning and a great place to take out of towners.

I have been here many times, it is my local i guess. the staff are always vibrant, helpful and polite. the food is great, pizzas today were great, the seafood chowder is fab and the venison i had there a month or two back was divine. Great range of beers and wines and you couldnt get a nicer location.

Party of 8, a little slow with the drinks and possibly a bit slow with service if you are in a hurry but overall a nice experience, staff were fantastic as food wasn't up to standard (overcooked steaks, a bit thin on the ground with the fish & my pork belly was cold although very tasty!). Our waitress was excellent and coped well and our food was redone and sent back out in double time - worth the wait this time round. Can forgive food that's not perfect when you have great wait staff! Will definitely be back as enjoyed the atmosphere.

I have been several times now, different times of the day, just for coffee and cake in the afternoon and several times for dinner.
All visits have been pleasant and the food very nice.

On one occasion my daughter and I went for pizza, one came out too wet with the base a sodden mass of dough but the chef came to see how it was and took it away immediately and remade it for us.

Definitely worth visiting for simple nice fare.

My mother, wife and I visited The Styx for lunch and I must say, the service and meals were top notch. The ladies had Seafood Chowder and regard it as the best they have ever tasted. I had the Pancake Tower and found it just divine. The staff were extremely cheerful and helpful which I find very important when visiting a Restaurant. They set the scene for a very enjoyable meal.

My partner and I have been to several of the two-for-one Pizzas on Tuesday evenings. It was just right - a quick pizza and a glass of wine (or beer) on the way home from work. Haven't tried the rest of the menu yet, but for us the pizzas work just fine. The staff are friendly (and don't change all the time) and now recognise when we enter - a nice personal touch.

We were here for dinner with a large group a few weeks ago. Sadly the food was average at best. The pasta dish was high on chili and oil and low on garlic and parmesan and several of the shrimps still had their poo-shoots in which was really un-appetising. My husband described the burger as something he'd expect to eat in a pub, not a restaurant. The so called "golden syrup pudding" was just terrible, a big lump of dough with no golden syrup and a weird chai tea liquid poured over top and very strangely topped with sunflower seeds.
The service was prompt and friendly, but overall I wouldn't return.

Went there in January with my family that were visiting. We had pizzas, but they were very good and the family still talk about "those yummy pizzas". Service was good (not outstanding, but obviously good enough that I can't remember them at all! That's a good sign by my standards.)
Atmosphere was very nice too. It's a lovely spot and good for visitors wanting to appreciate the port.
