Review Golden Bell Thai Restaurant - Nelson

Colin Cowan
Over the years I have had quite a few good meals from Golden Bell. Although the place is starting to look a little tired but the meals are still top nosh, very tasty. I would definitely recommend you book a table as it is a popular place.

That's my second time to come here and have dinner in golden bell. I love those food so much. Highly recommend Mix Seafood salad, and Tom Yum, while the wok is great as well which is really fit my taste! I love their fresh spicy taste. Friendly stuff and smiling service. 5 stars foodie experience in Nelson. One of the best Thai food in NZ.

Totally Thai taste for Malaysian. Recommend stir fried peanut sauce with pork it is very very peanutlicious!

Awesome meal. Food was very tasty. Portion sizing was huge. Managed to feed 3 people and a few drinks for less than 150 with lots of leftovers for the next day. Would definitely go back. Menu needs a revamp as the presentation looks very old, but this is no indication of the food quality.

Good thai experience ... decent portion size and nice interesting dessert :) Only criticism is we ordered our curry "hot" and our Pad Thai medium but it was difficult to detect any spice in the food at all ! Nice tasty food though and generous with the meat.

The most authentic smelling and tasting Thai food that I've had in a long time. Simple, kind service. The food is the thing, and authentic experience. Loved it and highly recommended. (Ate there twice.) Thank you!

Had a lunch special for $8.50 each for the Pad Thai and fried rice. They were open and no surcharge even on an Easter Sunday. Service was fast and friendly. And it was a proper portions. Very happy!

Best thai food I never have, and I spend three months in Thailand. Lovely staff and a nice style. The food need some time to be ready, and you understand why :) !

We came here for lunch and had the street noodles and green chicken curry. The curry was great, but the street noodles were extra special and reason enough to keep coming back to this restaurant. Beware if you order something spicy, it will actually be very spicy.

A very enjoyable meal with excellent customer service from Ioanna. The fresh spring rolls were a light starter and the Thai Beef Salad and South Thai Duck Curry were first rate. Oh, and 'hot' means 🔥🥵 :) but in a good way!

Giving 5 stars because the food was simply delicious. Tom Kar Soup was very good. Thai Beef salad was tasty. Thai Green Curry was outstanding. Service was oriented toward one dish for one person but they happily provided utensils, bowls and plates for eating shared dishes. Good beer and wine selection. With a little bit of additional effort this restaurant could be a real 5 Star dining experience. For now just go for the good food and enjoy!

I come here at 7:30. They let me wait more than 1 hour for the food. The restaurant is empty. So disappointed. I never be back at this restaurant.

Golden Bell is a Thai restaurant located in the heart of Nelson, on a street that seems overloaded with Asian restaurants for some reason, specifically Thais. I tried this one on a whim, I came across their sign and thought why not try it. I was a bit reticent at first, due to the fact that their lunch special is amongst one of the lowest priced in Nelson- And, I have had bad experiences with cheaper priced restaurants in certain areas of New Zealand, specifically in the dreadful town of Timaru. But, I digress and I did not go to Golden Bell at lunch time either; I went there at dinner time. I had the Phad Thai with Tofu, which was priced at $20, although their website clearly has it priced at $19.50. The waiter was helpful and polite. I did not have to wait for my food too long and the portion size was generous. I thought the cooked tofu seemed a bit chewy and queried the waiter about it. He told me that this is how cooked Tofu is supposed to taste like. Since I have only ever had it raw, I could NOT possibly contradict him. My only recommendations are to update the pricing on their website and get new menus, since some pages were falling down from my one.

The food was not authentic and has no flavour. It's like they use flavour packets purchased at supermarkets in their cooking. The waiters also really need to learn the menu well because when asked about what food was being served, they wasn't sure and have to go into the kitchen to ask the chef. But I still wonder how the chef him/herself distinguish the food cause all the curries taste and look so similar. Not recommend this Thai place at all.

Awesome service and delicious food.
One of the more authentic thai places I have eaten at.
The pineapple fried rice is A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. Came back two nights in a row for it.
Favourite Thai place in Nelson.

Favourite dishes here: sizzling king prawns, Pad Thai, and the traditional soup noodles in the lunch menu!

Friendly and attentive service. Hope to be back :)

This beautifully furnished restaurant has friendly staff, a decent selection and fair prices. The food was delicious and the portions were very generous. I would love to come here again in the future.

3 of us went here on a busy night to celebrate a birthday . Soup as a starter was full of flavour and excellent . The mains were all delicious and served by a friendly and hard working waitress .
The place was comfortable with a nice atmosphere . Was a little noisy towards the end of the evening as this restaurant is rightly popular . Would recommend and will return but maybe avoid Friday and Saturday nights .

I have been to this restaurant many times and each time the service and the food just gets better. It is always consistently good. No wonder the place is always packed and hard to get a reservation without a booking. Best Thai Restaurant in town. Brought takeaways the other night and just as lovely. Well done you! You have never let your standards down from day one. You holiday makers do not leave this town without trying this wonderful restaurant!

Now I've just got back to England and I had been to Nelson visiting relatives when the idea came up of going for a meal. Your restaurant came up and I must admit that it was the best experience of the trip. You and your staff are a credit to the business and Gail if I could would pack you in my suitcase and bring you home as I've not met anyone with the amount of customer service as you in all my travels thanks again and ill definitely pass your name on.

We have just been for lunch. Little bit disappointed with service to start with... there were people who seemed to be staff wondering around but did not acknowledge us till we actually stopped someone and asked for a table. The place can do with a good tidy-up and furniture replacement. Anyways, we ordered from the lunchmenu and food actually arrived promptly. Tasted good too. I think the waiting staff and general cleanliness is letting this place down. We will be back again to get take away.

Well one of the best Thai restaurants around ,food and service couldn't be better. We are up from Christchurch and just took a chance calling in quite late. We were greeted with a table for all us with no fuss ,what a night. Go and enjoy this place.

They can do one curry - that's all. Everything is same tasting or just spicy flavor. Not excited at all. I've had better Thai or actually can cook better Thai food in home. Overrated and over priced dinner.
