Review Olive Indo-nepali Eatery - New Lynn

Surachhya Shrestha
I recently celebrated my niece’s second birthday at this restaurant, and I must say it was an excellent choice. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance was perfect for a celebration, perfect party size area, perfect size area for chic and sophisticated decor style set up. The service was outstanding, with the staff being attentive and friendly. The staff even went out of their way to take a group photo for us to commemorate the occasion. Now let's talk about the food. Oh my, the food was simply delicious! The menu offered a variety of options. The mutton curry, chicken chili, dumplings, noodles (to name a few) were a standout. Overall, I would highly recommend this restaurant for any special occasion or just a casual dining, take outs. The food, service, and ambiance were all top-notch, and we couldn't have asked for a better birthday celebration, and everyone had a great time. The combination of excellent food, impeccable service, and a lovely ambiance make it the perfect place to create unforgettable memories. We also did dine in, take out, multiple times during our stay in Auckland, and this restaurant never disappointed. Me and my husband look forward to returning in the future when we visit again from USA 😊

My first visit to Olive was at lunchtime on a weekday and my friend & I were drawn in by the beautiful aromas. The food was delicious & the staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful. Service was outstanding- the meal was a totally unexpected delight. Surely this must be New Lynn's best kept secret? I was so impressed I went back for dinner a few days later with friends and everyone was super impressed. Namaste Olive! 🙏

Food is very good here. Delicious, clear and balanced flavours. I have tried most of the famous Sandringham restaurants but by far prefer Olive. They also have a lunch special which is delicious & very affordable -- I recommend the chicken curry or fish masala.

Great and tasty food. Was soo good I forgot to take pictures. Delicious, will be back for sure! Edit: I had to go back and once again the food tasted really good. The dumplings are so yum! And this time I took a couple of pics 😊

Perfect food and the service was so amazing. Friendly staff and the food quality, quantity was superb!! Loved the Chili chicken Momo's and Schezwan Chicken Fried rice. Highly recommended for Indian-Nepali food.

Olive Massey branch is hard to beat. If it is your first time, try the Olive Specials or if you are a fan of a spicy rice, then go for the Schezwan Rice dish, absolutely devine, a concert of flavours in your mouth from the first to the last spoon. But my absolute favorite dish must be the Lamb Choila. I have never tasted anything like that and it is hard not to order it when I visit. Did I mentioned the very professional service with a genuine smile, simply can't beat that !!

Really Good Experience. Food is delicious you can feel the flavours of Himalaya in their food. Customer service at their best. Guy actually explained me their specials. Food portions are good. Must try once.

Amazing nepali food. Especially, their tandoori and jhol momos are awesome. Lamb starter is yum 😋 as well. Not a friendly staff but quick service. Staff should train for etiquettes for the case of customer service.

Haven't eaten in here but I hope to soon im just an uber eats fiend. Momo is so so good (highly recommend the sadeko momo), butter chicken and chicken korma 10/10 haven't tried their other curries but I don't even need to okay I'm an arbiter of the truth. Naan bread is good everything you want at the end of the day would highly recommend

First time trying out Nepalese cuisine and they definitely delivered! Delicious food and great service. We received our food within minutes after ordering. Had the momo platter, butter chicken, chilli chicken and lamb masala. Momos were divine. Will definitely be back 😋

Was my first time here and I was craving something a bit spicy. Wanted to try their momo in Johl as it is something I have never had before in my life. Let me tell it you it's one of the best decisions I have made so far. The soup that the Momos came in was so delicious, well seasoned and with copious amount of ginger. It would definitely be on my must eat soup list when in feeling under the weather. In my opinion, the soup over powered the momo and I can't really how tasty the Momos were. Something to try next time.

The inside is very plain and could do with some styling and character. How ever the food was absolutely delicious. The mixed platter entrees was so good. Mains and ice cream fabulous. Attentive waiter. Clean plate between entree and main would have been nice. Will come again!!

Worst experience ever. We have been here almost 2 months before and the food was amazing. So we thought to visit again and we ordered momo’s platter, margarita and virgin mojito. First momo’s were not fresh it was frozen or supermarket one i am not sure but all of them were tasteless. Secondly they are charging so high for their drinks and giving flavour and the soda in the name of mojito. I understand some reataurant’s don’t know how to make cocktails and thats totally fine but then they should charge the price according to that cocktail. I mean $15 dollars for just the supermarket syrup and soda seriously.
Lastly when we asked from the person on the counter that the chef is changed the momos were not good. He just din’t even bother to ask the concern. So we just paid and left the place. But for sure we will never go back again and never recommend to anyone.

Great atmosphere with relaxing musics and services :))

Stopped by while in the area because we'd never tried Nepalese food before and we were seriously blown away by how good it was.

The mo-mo (Nepalese dumplings) were a definite high point, combining the best aspects of both Chinese-style dumplings with Indian flavours. We tried several varieties and jhol mo-mo (dumplings in soup) were a definite favourite. Give it a go!

The momos here are awesome, really enjoyed the vege momos and the tandoori momos! They were prepared super quickly too. 😀

We ordered Butter Roti, Assorted Momos, chicken Curry, Goat Curry and Chicken Tikka Masala. The taste of Goat Curry n Chicken Tikka Masala was awful...Not worth the price...
Assorted Momos — Good
Chicken Curry - Ok
Goat Curry - Flop
Chicken Tikka Masala - Super Flop
For this price I might probably go to a better restaurant like Oh Calcutta...

Food didnt taste good at all and its overly priced for the level of taste and quantity provided. Very disappointed, wont ever go again and wont suggest anyone.

The taste has drastically change from awesome to real sh*t. So disappointed after taking our guest for a dinner specially after praising about the food. Very bad.

I don't think this restaurant is indian restaurant. We saw paneer chilli in curry menu and asked whether it's curry or starter and they said it's dry paneer but we were surprised when it's arrived. It's look like manchow soup with 3-4 pieces of paneer. They need to keep paneer chilli in starter menu instead of curry menu. Service was really poor. There were only one waitress to serve the whole restaurant.

The wait time was insane - we waited for our entree's for 50 minutes after the placing the order.
Once we finished the entree, like totaly empty plates - we were asked by a staff memeber - "Should I get your mains ready or you would like to cancel since it may take time". Highly disappointing. We ended up eating mains at a new place which served muchhhh faster.
The reason for delay was apparently - "we are too busy" --- can't imagine being not busy on a Friday night - does that mean - don't go there at all so it's never busy ?

The food was not at all good.If people want to try Indo-Chinese food please visit Everest Dine it is much better. We had hara-bhara kawab,Veg Dumpling and Garlic Chilli Chowmin

Very nice! Hubby and I shared a nepalese mixed entree, hubby had a goat curry and me the Olive special lamb curry and shared a garlic naan. Can't fault a thing. Very very tasty.

Went there for dinner with a friend. Food was good but a little pricy as compared to decor. There was only 1 staff who was serving 4 tables and also managing the counter. She was polite and friendly but was quite busy. Will try them again but they are not on the list for Gold members.
Ritesh
Loved the food and also the service. Definitely will go back again.
We had Olive special chicken main which is Yummmm and Nepali Olive special chicken Entree

I was the first customer of the day for a takeaway meal. I placed my order and was advised it would take about 15 minutes. Butter chicken had plenty of chicken and the sauce was tasty with just a hint of chilli. Kadai chicken also had plenty of chicken and a rich tasty sauce. The onion bhaji was a bit too oily for my taste and not a lot of flavour but the small pottle of tamarind sauce helped with that. The staff are friendly and polite, everything looks clean and tidy and the restaurant is well set up with room to move between the tables.

chose to do something a little new, 🌼
and ordered the Momo steamed chicken dumplings, which came with dip.

These 10 dumplings were absolutely beautiful and the best dumplings I’ve had in a very long time. 🥟

Tried on a Thursday 8pm. The service was excellent- thanks Gagan. The naan was excellent. The chicken chef's special curry & paneer tikka masala were good . The Kulfi was not as sweet as I would have liked but better for us diabetics. They generously packed and bagged all that we did not finish for no extra charge despite the treatme deal we paid with. Thanks

Tried this place with Groupon voucher. Customer service is average and a bit slow to take orders for a restaurant. Atmosphere is fine , and we did enjoyed the Chicken Tikka and Olivio special.

Customer Service: 5/10

Food: 7/10

Atmosphere: 7/10

Date: September 2018

Wow. Where do I start....

I have just dropped my partner off at his sport function dinner in New Lynn. I have decided to have some dinner of my own... Save him from catching an Uber.

Firstly. I have never had dinner at a restaurant alone, so of course I was very keen to grab takeway and sit in my car. Instead I decided to brave it.

I walked in and wasn't greeted. I walked up to the counter and asked for a table for one. The waittress looked around for a bit to see what table would be suitable..... There were several. She told me to 'take' that table and I proceeded to seat myself. I was glanced at for the next 5 minutes, then given water and a menu.(I now feel the pain of people that want to have a nice meal for one, who don't get treated as well as if it were 2 people or a group).

An older gentleman (potentially the owner) handed me the menu and water. Throwing both down, not at all delicately. The menu was flung on my plate. After a few minutes, the older gentleman walked past and said I will be a minute... I hadn't asked nor even attempted to get attention at this point.

I asked for a coke, which was brought the me and placed my order for Aloo Matar - Potatoes and Peas in onion based sauce (Refer to Menu as zomato won't let me at the menu photo) a rice and a naan. When I asked for a naan, I got a, "Well which naan do you want?" (Sooooo feeling a bit underwhelmed already). The man comes up once again and says which curry do you want Paneer or Matar. One is cottage cheese and that's the one you ordered...... You want that or should we make you something else. At this point as well as getting the 'sad' stares the whole restaurant was now staring at this commotion.

I asked if I could see the menu, knowing full well what I said and ordered. The older gentleman turned and walked away. He started muttering in another language, refused to let me see a menu and starting instructing the chefs on what to cook for me. At this point feeling like I don't belong, I am no longer interested in eating here.

I get up and head to the counter and hand him money for the coke and tell him to cancel the order. The man looks confused. So here is a tip for you Sir. If you want your business to survive in this economy..... How about treating your customers like guests instead of trash. Whether it be a group or a one person.

Best of luck

We only ordered only from the Nepali menu, fish curry and mix vegetable curry. Fish curry was average and veggies was bad. Not impressed not authentic.

The food overall was tasty. Momos were yummy. But what’s disappointing is the service and the wait time. The manager did not know how far our order was. He was absolutely unhelpful. We had to wait 1 hr and 40 mins for our meal and guess what we had phone ordered to get it picked up.
Juen Mayfly
Very unassuming local restaurant with very flavourful food! Worth giving a try on a winter cold night, and the food will warm you right up. Naan is nice too and made fresh.
Safwaan
Really good food and full of flavour! It may be a bit more expensive than other places however the quality is worth it. Service was also really friendly and wait time wasn’t long.

I went to Olive Indo for momos as a friend recommended. We ordered for Chili dumplings and it was the most amazing dumplings I have had. It had a Chinese flavour to it and would recommmed everyone who is a momo fan like me. Must have :)

Super disappointed with this place. We ordered at 6.30pm with a delivery time of 30-40 mins. Come 7.50pm we still didn’t have our order delivered so we rung and got told 1 minute “ the driver has left” that was all we heard... then 15 minutes later, still no order so I rang and asked where our order was.. the man who answered told me the same thing “1minute” I said to him “you told us this 15 minutes earlier” and he then proceeded to yell down the phone at me.. I told him please don’t yell at me.. and then told me 1 minuet and I ended the phone call because I was so disgusted in the manner at which he spoke to me! I would never order from this place again!! Disgusting costumer service and extremely slow delivery time!!
Sid
Food was really yummy, however service was extremely slow. Took close to an 1hour to get to the table and the restaurant was not busy. Otherwise really good price point. The tables were nice and clean. It would be nice if they did cocktails, with their food.

Eaten here a while back very good food and customer service, tried the lamb biriyani very nice but the food is very expensive eating in the restaurant compared to the takeaway menu.

Th service is always top notch, friendly and welcoming. Infact on more than one occasion they have gone out of their way to make sure I was taken care of a little above and beyond, asking specific questions about the food I had ordered to make sure everything was just right.

The food is amazing, without a doubt one of the best places I have been for vegetarian and vegan friendly food and they do not scrimp on flavour. My favourite is the dahl dishes. But I love the vegetarian samosas as well. My wife has had the chicken Saag wala and raves about still. I may have developed a slight addiction to their yummmy food and delightful service.

Both me and my wife got food poisoning last time we ate here. Unlikely that we'll be going back there. Should be refunded for our meal in all honesty

If I could give this place a 0 I would. Every time I have ordered from this place they make mistakes with our order. But today was the last time we will ever order anything from them. Being a vegetarian I ordered a paneer dish. When we were about to eat it I saw they had given chicken. When we called back to let them know the lady said oh it’s not my fault it’s the chef fault. Not apology whatsoever. I don’t understand how you could get something like that wrong and it’s unacceptable. Also the people running this place know nothing about how to deal with customers and have no customer service skills. There food isn’t great either. Trust me there are much better indian restaurants out there. I think people already know that as well since it’s always empty.

Very poor service and on top of it food not fresh.. bad experience... Go at your own risk, customer service is very very poor , had ordered momos and noodles
MYNK
Crap food, crap management, know 0 about customer service. Just crap. No one should go there. The place is like a ghost house, so I’m pretty sure it’s not fresh. Save your stomach, and just don’t go.

We went here on a weekend specially to try jhol momos because its all over in their review section. We ordered chicken jhol momos, dal makhani, kadai chicken and garlic naan. Jhol momos were the best and I would definitely come back for them, where as I felt the taste of the other two dishes were not promising enough.

The service can be improved. There was just one lady managing in the front and consider it was a weekend, the restaurant was quite full, therefore there were times when we wanted to order something or ask for water, she was is the kitchen getting another table's order. The way she was managing was impressive but the overall service that need to be provided in a restaurant to a customer was not very appropriate. We had to eat our mains in a quater plate, as we were not given a big plate and looking how difficult it is getting for her to manage so many people at once all alone, we thought we should not bother her by asking for it.

The overall experience was good. Curries was okayish though one should definitely go there for their Jhol Momos, they are amazing. The staff was good, but the management should be improved.

We was going to the Japanese restaurant opposite the road but as it was 2:15pm they already put closed sign. So we just tried Olive Eatery. We chose butter chicken and koma chicken from their lunch special menu. It was only like $10.90 each which was even cheaper than the one inside lynn mall food court. I was surprised when the food turned up. They were beautifully presented, good potion even came with a glass of free soft drink. Highly recommend and definitely will be back.

Been to this place on a weekend and loved their food. Came back soon after to try indo chinese (veg manchuria, veg chow mein & spring rolls) and absolutely loved it. So glad we discovered this place as we don’t have many good indo chinese eateries in Auckland.

Definitely going back again. 4.5 stars! Give this place a try if you like good indo chinese and regular north indian food.
FoodFelix
Great people and service. Enjoyed dealing with them and Fried rice was good. Will
Be better with fresh vegetables though. Very much appreciate their focused service with active listening and attention to customer is the best.

Great food, great service, some nice wines on the list, some interesting things on the menu too, being half Nepalese, half Indian will definitely be back!! The restaurants out this way are just getting better and better!

We got Goat Curry, Olive Special Curry w chicken and a Lamb dish for takeaway.

We waited for longer than expected; even though it wasn’t that busy at the time. The portions were also quite small, being a plastic clear container that was quite shallow in depth.
Nevertheless, the meat pieces in all three dishes were absolutely amazing. Incredibly tender and full of flavour! Curries were rich and creamy without being too heavy. Goat meat was SO TENDER, fell apart without being chewy or over cooked.

Because they’re still new they currently offer 15% discount. The bill came to $39.50. Service was really friendly! If portions were slightly larger I would highly recommend this place!

We went here last night, and I wanted to place a review to tell everyone to go and try their "jhol momo", which was Nepali dumplings in soup. It was delicious! The dumplings themselves were nice, and the soup tasted like a mix of Indian and Chinese flavours that I'm familiar with.

The curries were good too, but I think it's the Nepali dishes here that are really worth trying.
Suprema
I Specifically came to this place for Momo's (nepali dumplings) and was not disappointed! Excellent quality of food, one of the best momo's I have had in Auckland. The menu provides options for both Indian and Nepalese dishes, however we chose the latter. We ordered Jhol Momo, Momo chilli in chicken, Aloo Chop & Chicken Sekuwa. The Jhol momo was new to see on the menu therefore we had to try that. I was instantly blown away by the aromatic flavours that were seeping through from the back kitchen. I was intrigued by what my tastebuds were going to experience as this was a new restaurant and being Nepalese I had quite a bit of high expectations. The taste of timoor (Sichuan Peppers) that was present in most of the dishes that we ordered, reminded us of the rich flavours that are found in Nepalese food. The aloo chop was crispy on the outside and soft in the inside with lightly sprinkled aloo chaat powder on top. The Jhol momo was exquisite. Taking a bite of the Chicken sekuwa reminded me of baji Ko sekuwa in Nepal, it came with a little hot chutney sauce which went well with it however we mainly used that to dip our chilli momo's, which were also very tasty. Overall the food was great and we were very pleased and satisfied, I cannot wait to try the other dishes next time I come. The interior could do some sprucing up however it is still fairly new therefore that is understandable.

A must for momo lovers 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽
