Review India Today Tandoor And Bistro - New Plymouth

A really great place to dine, we were conversed with and made welcome. Had a worry about the spicy food but was recommended a beautiful dish, and I mean beautiful ❤️ chicken Lababdar! I think if you don't like hot spicy this is a good try. Creamy and smooth. We added rice and nan bread. Kept it alcohol free night and was delighted with the experience. Thank you India Today. Absolutely amazing food - most restaurants in India can not compete with India todays standart. Ambience wonderful designed, a mix of ethnic nostalgia and modern industrial Charme. It’s a 5 star overall review from me. Waiter and waitress very attentive and friendly should also be mentioned. Thanks for a wonderful evening out in new Plymouth, New Zealand. Anil from Frankfurt, Germany.

Little India was recommended to us by a local as we were from out of town. As soon as we got to the entrance, we knew we were going to like this place. Now I know you can't base a review on the so I can honestly say, this restaurant has it all going on. The ambiance was set with the most amazingly beautiful decor. The staff were on point and food was delicious. Extra points goes to the owner (Sunny) who was walking around the tables and engaging with his guests. Awesome work team!

This should be the best Indian restaurant in New Zealand. Authentic Indian food service and the environment is amazing.

What an awesome place! Stands out above the rest of the New Plymouth high street in quality and atmosphere. Great staff, great food, great decor. Really enjoyed the ambient music too. Will definitely be coming back.

The food was excellent and so was the service. I had Butter Chicken with Cheese & Garlic Naan which was awesome. My wife had a Meat Sizzler over greens (gluten-free) which was also very good. They were very conscientious about gluten allergies. The price are reasonable. The restaurant has a vey nice ambiance and a cozy bar.

Amazing service! The best in Taranaki! everyone is so friendly and they even pulled out our chairs and pushed them in for us! beautifully decorated restaurant and the food was incredible 11/10!

The restaurant building entrance look somewhat vintage, but as soon as you step in, you are in another world. The most beautiful art deco restaurant in dark wooden, brown and golden colours. Thick, soft carpets. Dark wood panels. wooden & iron mixed ceiling. Well decorative tables & chairs, private place for 10-12 people, super for privacy. We had a very nice 5-star meal, very tasty and appealing. Not hyperinnovative, but not necessary. I had a super signature Butter Chicken, pilau rice (saffron flavoured rice), garlic cheese naan and a traditional onion rings. Service started a bit reserved, but picked up; friendly, attentive and speedy. . A very nice evening indeed. Big thanks to Sunny..

Love the decor and theme of our new favourite restaurant. The service was friendly and efficient. We had delicious starters and main meal. It was surprising, and hard to resist, to be offered a chocolate brownie and ice cream for desert.

We were having a dinner with my wonderful wife lasten Sunday night. The inner view of restaurant was amazing - - You can see Rajasthani Table and chairs and it looks Royale decor. Atmosphere in India Today was relaxed and cosy. Waitress were truly professional. Food was well prepared, tasty and looked really nice. I can highly recommend India Today for food lovers. Specially meat sizzler and mouthwatering Sunny Special BIRYANI...Simply divine..

Finished work last night and rushed home to get the wife to go to a concert in town , wanted to have tea somewhere as obviously we were hungry but had to be a quick meal so we were not late for the concert . Wife rang India Today on the way into town and asked how busy they were and explained our situation , she was told to come in and they would push us through as fast as they could . We went in and were seated , the waiter came up to us to do our drink orders and I then asked him if we could just order our meal at the same time . He took our order and then said to me are you the ones that are going to the concert , I replied yes that's us . Within 7 or so minutes we had 2 mains on our table . Impeccable service and a delightful meal . Considering there would have been up to 12 other tables of people I was very impressed . Great service and great meal that is why you get 5 stars from me .

I have been travelling to New Plymouth once a month for many years now and always eat here. The food is delicious and it never fails to amaze me how they are so consistent. The staff, management and owners are always friendly and make me feel at home, nothing is a problem for them. 10 out of 10,in my opinion the best Indian food in NZ
John Lincoln
Surely on of the best Indian restaurants in New Zealand and it's not only the food but the whole dining out experience always a pleasure.

Out of towners, came into a busy restaurant but were greeted promptly and lucky for us the wait only ended up being a few minutes. Lovely atmosphere, great food, and the service was very attentive! Glad we took a chance and would recommend to anyone!

We have had lots of Indian meals in the last few year BUT we have to say this would have to be the best. Excellent

Mixed up order. Main came before the starter. Waiter didn't really want to take it back to the kitchen. Food was mediocre at best. Will not be returning.
Wayne Brett Jacobsen
for sure the best indian food in nz , allways so friendly people , they rock

Seriously good Indian cuisine. I could not fault the flavour or value.

Had a great night of fellowship and lovely food with old friends. Great environment, just don't park out the front, the birds don't like cars -haha

Food is usually great... I had the butter prawns on Saturday night and am currently extremely unwell. I just heard today the same thing happened to someone else the weekend before from eating the same thing.

Amazing!!!!! Best Indian ever
Eating My Way Around
Lured in by the awards displayed on the outside of the restaurant, we booked for dinner for our family with high expectations. But neither food or service lived up to them. It's no fun when noone seems to be bothered with your table and you can't get attention when you are ready to order. Despite us having 3 small kids with us, our two entrees took half an hour to come out, surely it doesn't take long to fry up some samosas! The mains then took another half hour to come after a couple of follow ups. The guy sitting next to us came after us but got his main and left before we had even got our mains! My eggplant main tasted good but I had to hunt out the eggplant. I did easily find the two huge chunks of potatoes 😕
Butter chicken had maybe 5 chunks of chicken so was gravy heavy. I'm told the Rogan Josh was good but not award winning 😉
It would have been good to share the feedback with the staff directly but they seemed focused on other tables. The guy who briefly came to our table was way too smiley and enthusiastic to burst his bubble with complaints and we had been there for so long we just wanted to get out of there. Disappointing experience all around.

Very limited vegetarian choices with no paneer dishes apart from malai kofta in the mains. The food was india but not. Too much tomatoes in dal makhni and the malai kofta was really sweet, that when i ordered everything to be medium to hot.

Also, the waiters were not too welcoming, without a smile, unlike hospitality.

I wish we had gone to some other place like Arranged marriage or Punjab Grill that are closeby as well.
Wapatino
Delicious Indian food! All the mains I’ve tried have been very good. The garlic and cheese nan is a must try as well along with the mango lassi.
Service and ambiance are great. Prices are a bit up there but they have great value lunch specials. Best Indian food restaurant in New Plymouth.
Redrockinghood
Very friendly staff. I ordered a takeaway and I was pleased to see it come out in a brown paper bag. The samosas were delicious in their cardboard box. The lamb jalfrezi had plenty of meat and nice chunks of veg. A tasty roti to mop up the gravy completed a great takeaway meal experience.
Manish Nanda
Went to have only vegetarian food and found that there were no Paneer dishes in the menu but their friendly staff made paneer tikka masala which was absolutely amazing that we bit our fingers and veje lababdar was top notch as well. In a nutshell india today exceeded our expectations. Amazing food with great ambiance and a very friendly staff. Loved it!

Terrible service. Asked repeatedly to please be seated inside as it was cold outside. Wait staff seated others while we waited for our seats and our mains. Gave up after waiting too long.

Best place in New Plymouth to have Indian food. Period. Dishes have taste. Are not over spiced. And the breads were nice and fluffy but not being overly thick.
Ordered butter chicken once which was good but that's the case with any other Indian restaurants. So during my next visit, ordered kadhai paneer, dal makhani and chicken jalfrezi(all mild) and i was really happy to have done so.
All in all, their Indian food game is on point.
Shazia Khan
So far the best Indian food I've eaten in new plymouth.
I ordered the Dal makhani and lamb do pyaza . The lamb was cooked well and the curry was yum .
The Dallas makhani was really good .
The decor looks very authentic too.
The customer service was really good the team seemed really friendly.
I'd definitely be going back.

The Lamb Biryani was pretty decent but the Saag Paneer was not highly disappointing, it was tasteless and looked like fake spray painted green sauce. I expected a rich flavourful spinach dish as I thought it would be the same dish as my usual favourite Palak Paneer.

I visited "India Today" for lunch this afternoon, was just passing by with two of my friends and saw a board outside and felt like having some curry. The board had the price for goat curry as $12.99 and went in and ordered it. The portion size was as it is small and when i went for billing they charged me $20 as on the menu the price for the curry was this. When i asked the waiter about the board outside, it seemed to me that he didn't know about that at first and then he just said that you have to mention it while ordering the meal (I think that's so stupid). But then i paid him $20 as its not a big amount. Anyways the food didn't seem worth it.

Beautiful restaurant, welcoming and conscientious staff, warm atmosphere and most of all, fantastic food! Two very different but equally delicious vegetarian curries, bursting with flavour which we would highly recommend! Overall, a fantastic evening out at a high quality Indian restaurant.
Mark Christopher
Really nice food try the Mango lassi really awesome. Food is worth the money spent really friendly staff the restaurant has been there for many years. Nice spot to hangout to have a good North Indian food.
Imrran Akbanni
Not so good choices on the menu
Really crowded and noisy
Not a very gd choice to hv an Indian meal
Could improve on their service and seating

Great indian restaurant

Still my favourite Indian restaurant. Very consistent dishes here. We have eaten here for lunch, dinner, big groups and takeaways. Think in all the years they have been open the only issue I ever had was a missing bread on a takeaway. I like we have so many Indian restaurants now in New Plymouth but Indian Today will remain the one to come back to, time and time again

We were spending one night in New Plymouth passing through on our way to visit friends. We were trying to find somewhere open to eat (Monday evening) and not having much joy. We saw this restaurant but not being a particular lover of indian food, I was reluctant to try it. However, as we stood outside reading the menus a lovely chap spoke to us, asked what sort of food we liked and explained the dishes he thought we might like from the menu. We decided to take a chance and went in. What a lovely meal it was, couldn't fault it, it was delicious. The service was excellent, and the price reasonable for such a lovely restaurant. It certainly changed my mind about Indian food and if we are ever passing through here again will certainly eat there. We are from the UK, so it may be a year or two! Many thanks to Sonny for helping us choose 2 lovely dishes.

Visiting New Plymouth over night for work and was recommended to India Today. I must say - it was a brilliant experience

After being ushered to the table I chose, I surveyed the menu looking for a specific item I've been craving for quite some time, Paneer Jalfrezi. Unfortunately it wasn't on the menu, so when the waiter came to take my order, I asked him if they were able to make one - without having to check, he assured me that they would. I ordered, Paneer Jalfrezi, Roti and Mango Lassi. All of which were brilliant. The Paneer Jalfrezi was on par with the one which I used to have 10 years ago at How Cow Restaurant in Wellington (since changed to Yellow Chilli).

Atmosphere wise - There were maybe 10 people in there when I arrived, so wasn't too loud and the music was set at an appropriate volume. Even after some time, as takeaway customers and additional diners entered, the noise didn't get loud at all.

The restaurant is quite decked out and they clearly have put in the effort to decorate

Very enjoyable evening :-)

For my Fiftieth birthday my wife, daughters and I visited India Today this evening. The whole dining experience was outstanding. Nothing was too much trouble, the staff were polite, friendly and smiling...very welcoming.I very much enjoyed everything we ate ,in particular my Beef Madras which was beautiful. I was given a complimentary dessert with a candle on top..very tasty..a nice and unexpected touch! The Mango Lassi was delicious. The service was excellent with a waiter usually on the ball or very close by if you needed one. All of the food came promptly and the portion sizes were good. All in all a very pleasant experience at a very reasonable price. I look forward to returning to India Today!!

The service and food at India Today are always reliable. For a curry in New Plymouth couldn't recommend them highly enough.

We always choose india today for our curries lately we have been finding them not quite hot enough dont no if a chef has changed or not otherwise yum

We had takeout on this visit. Which was beautiful. Hubby had the korma and I had the saag chicken. The cheese garlic naan is to die for. The roti was just the way it should be brushed with butter.
Next time in New Plymouth will be sure to book a table and eat in.
Louise
We have been here for dinner several times and it has always been excellent. The customer service has always been flawless, the staff are friendly and polite, accommodating and attentive. The food is very delicious but the customer service is what made me give the restaurant five stars. I also like the decoration of the restaurant - its all India! I especially like the Bollywood films playing quietly on a screen above the entrance, it always makes me smile and dance a little in my seat. On a Friday night the place fills up and creates a really great atmosphere. The Tandoori chicken is awesome. Several times we have come here without a booking and had to leave disappointed so now we always book if its the weekend.

Very yummy! Great tasting food and great service, the wait staff are a great help and willing to please. The decor really gives the place a great vibe. Im looking forward to my next visit (and my next serving of chicken tikka!)

YUM! Awesome place, wonderful service, great with young kids too. Food is very tasty and portions are generous. Dined here for dinner recently and had murg lbadar which was delicious. A very enjoyable dining experience :-)

have not dined in, but takeaways are wonderful and tasty. Big portions. Would like to dine in sometime.

Went for dinner for 8 the other night. The staff was very friendly and helpful, beautiful colourful clothes and atmosphere. Very nice wine on wine list. The food was outstanding and big portions. Would come back again to dine in.
Emma
Outstanding overall dining experience.
The food is exquisite and the service is unbeatable.
It is our first choice whenever we choose to eat out.
Very personable staff and we have never been disappointed.

Our family can not fault this Indian Restaurant, it is by far our Favourite when choosing where to go for a family meal. It is de-lish, thanks to Sonny & Jessie you have created an awesome place full of experience and flavour.
Kate
Beautiful food and people, a real experience, kids love it to. they cater to any needs and requests.

CHECK YOUR RECEIPT. Even if its only a couple of dollars, if they are doing this to half their customers (2 from our table of 4)then they are making quite a few easy extra bucks.
Only the chocolate naan bread in the lunch menu is saving this restaurant from a 1 star (Update Jan 2011 - No more chocolate naan on menu!) Fine for Indian, but nothing exciting. Good for groups if not busy, but can be cramped at a long central table if the surrounding tables are full, and the table gets crowded quickly. Try the sister restaurant Pankawalla for something different and more spacious.
Paul
Very Average - Waited for nearly 2 hours for our table of 4 to be served out meals. Meals were ok/average - cant comment on how the beverages were as we did not get offered any.
Craig Stewart
Well have dined previously and it wasn't bad at all, quite good in fact. Had a chicken korma this time; a little on the average side of things unfortunately. Obviously not the nicest cuts of chicken being used (at 16 bucks why not ay?)as they just weren't moist and beautiful as they should have been and sauce was just too creamy or on the creamy side consistency wise; if anything I felt the sauce could have been cooked out longer! I thought a korma was mostly cashew & yoghurt with a limited amount of coconut milk in some cases? oh well, the garlic naan was great, poppadums were very good decor inside absolutely beautiful I must say, very authentic which is why I expected the real deal with my curry; have they got a white guy in the kitchen or something? i daren't at this point try their biryani but will go back probably play it safe with a butter chicken!

Fantastic food with fantastic service and atmosphere, right on the money.
