Review Chaos Cafe - New Plymouth

Len McGrane
We're two weeks into the new owners of this very well known New Plymouth cafe and today I totally enjoyed the feel, the lunch and my flat white. Ashrin (And my apologies if I have the spelling wrong, mate!) is a relaxed, experienced and friendly host. My stuffed croissant was tasty, succulent and well plated. A good crowd; animated without being raucous. The room seemed to have the right mix of small tables and larger seating places. It has the comfortable, familiar atmosphere that only genuinely old, elegantly made buildings can give. And many of the art pieces have been retained around the walls, on ledges and suspended from the ceiling. Highly recommended.

Stopped in for brunch at Chaos on the 1st of Dec around 11am. Every staff member we talked to was super friendly and welcoming. We had a quick chat with Mihi who was really kind and helpful. Mihi is definitely an asset to this cafe - service and friendliness is on point! We ordered the tomato soup with bread, the breakfast bagel and an oat milk latte. The latte was delicious - my partner said it was the one of the best coffees he’s ever had! 10/10 The tomato soup was super creamy and delicious, with warm crusty bread on the side. It was a good portion size and left us feeling really satisfied. The breakfast bagel didn’t disappoint. It was filling and the egg was cooked really nicely - we were pleasantly surprised as it was from the cabinet. It tasted really yummy and was fresh and toasty. They even give you a special bagel knife to cut it which is awesome! Came here after being recommended by a local and are so glad we did! On top of all this, the cafe has a really nice ambience. We will definitely return if back in New Plymouth.

Beautiful little cafe. I don't go to a place to lick the wallpaper, but when the food and service is amazing, having a nice environment to enjoy it in is definitely a bonus. Friendly staff greeting you with a smile is always welcome and the eggs benny was spot on. Coffee is excellent too. Just got myself a new favourite haunt in New Plymouth!

A hearty brunch in New Plymouth central. The counter display was stocked with tantalizing bakes and sandwiches and they also have a menu for dishes. Coffee was a wonderful balance, not astringent or acidic

Absolutely awesome experience with Ash and the team @ Chaos. Great brekkie (had the eggs Bennie cooked to perfection), nice selection of delicious pastries and counter options, excellent Havana coffee. Quick and friendly service and the atmosphere is excellent. Really cool vibe in this place, you won't be disappointed!

I have been a regular at Chaos Cafe for ten years plus and with good reason. Great atmosphere as the whole Cafe experience can be found here. Great food, good coffee, terrific environment and staff are top notch caring, thoughtful but not OTT. You will not be disappointed. I love the place. You will too.

A must visit in New Plymouth for breakfast lunch or in between. I had the burrito and it was delicious; lots of flavour and a healthy portion. Coffee was great, as was the juice. Food and drinks came out quickly and the staff were friendly and attentive.

We had the sashouka and pulled hoisin pork bagel, both were delish. This place has great food and one of the best cabinets of food I have seen in ages.

Popped in over lunch for warm cheese scones, latte and tea. The staff member who served us was disinterested, rude and dismissive. Said we would have to wait for 10 min for a table. All fine so we asked for a takeaway instead. Coffee arrived cold and on opening our cheese scones, found they were stale and had not been warmed. Totally disappointing experience. Follow-up The owner, Elle, contacted me shortly after my review to ask for some feedback and I was remiss in not getting back to her. I appreciated this prompt follow-up and should have been more active, but life and business, got in the way. As such, my wife and I decided to give Chaos another try and had a tasteful, leisurely and well presented lunch. My wife loved the presentation of tea in a funky tea pot and milk jug! Staff were friendly, helpful in recommendations and quick in providing our meal. Amended my review from a 1 to a 5 as could not fault Chaos on our second try !
