Review Deluxe Diner - New Plymouth

Arianna Nikolajenko
I love a good sandwich.. so I ordered the Philly Cheese Steak Roll. It arrived looking delicious. The combo of sirloin steak, cheese and pickle was well balanced and the relish added a flavorsome tanginess to every bite.. the pickles had a slight spice to them, which I quite liked. Service was great and the atmosphere was comfortable. An overall enjoyable visit. I will definitely be back.

US Loaded Fries is the mega sized dish of surprices! Awakens your taste buds with flavour and a bit of heat. Next time I will easily share it with a friend.

My first food review takes me to Deluxe Diner in New Plymouth. A favourite place for my family for a sneaky weekend shakes and fries treat, this is my first real adventure into the rest of the extensive menu. I ordered the lunchtime serving of a New York Striploin, with a couple of eggs, chips, salad and onion rings. For an American themed diner, I thought it fit the bill. It arrived really quickly which suited my stomach well! The presentation and smells were very homely. A steak and chips type meal shouldn’t be played with too much presentation wise and this was nice and simple. Good portion size for lunch and cleanly plated. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare as I asked and was tender enough to know that it was rested enough that the juices and flavour had dispersed back into the meat. The rest of the meal is what you would expect from a steak meal at a diner, with the fries crispy and salty and eggs well cooked sunny side up. The onion rings were very tasty, however slightly undercooked, but for me - I like that. My only cry would be the gravy and salad dressings, both seemingly bulk buy packet products which taste and texture wise, didn’t quite measure up to the rest of the meal. However, as an American themed diner known for its burgers, shakes and fries styled menu, are they acceptable for the style of place? Probably. Deluxe Diner is always busy, well presented and the staff are always attentive, and on this occasion it was no different. Great comfort food in a relaxing environment. Will definitely be back for more.

The milkshake was fantastic, honestly if I had not been so impressed by it, perhaps the rest of the food would have rated higher. It was good, but not great. Still well worth a visit, highly recommend the shakes but maybe eat first because nothing will compare after. Proper American sized burgers, could probably share between two with a large side of chips as the wife had to take half home with her. The hamburger spring rolls were pretty accurate to description, not quite as good as the ones I've had in Florida but tasty none the less. The root beer float brought back childhood memories for my wife, A&W is apparently the go to. Absolutely packed, so service was stretched thin. I strongly believe if they were less busy it would have been 5/5.

I was lucky enough to enjoy deluxe Diner's intriguingly named and substancial sized Pint of Prawns starter off the dinner menu as a midday meal. The succulent garlic prawns nestled amongst a crisp and colorful iceberg salad were perfectly complemented by a creamy aoli. It was the cowboy style salsa with special detail of charred corn that really made the dish pop! The meal was delivered promptly by our affable waitress and manager, Mel. The plastic basket it arrived in was cute and keeping with the American diner theme of the fun family restaurant.

Really cool place. Classic 50's American diner, complete with jukebox and booth seating. Massive array of milkshakes. Although no 'adult' milkshakes despite being a licensed premises. Would've loved a measure or two of a delicious liquor to complement my malt chocolate shake. Pretty decent kids menu as well. Lots of options over the standard 4/5 choices that everywhere has. Corn cob for example. My main of savoury waffle, jerk chicken, bacon and a poached egg with hollandaise was excellent. The other main of a Cubano, was nowhere near as crispy as we would've expected, the fillings were delicious but it was seriously let down by a soggy bit of bread. Straight fries and curly fries were as expected and well above average. Would definitely be back to try one of the many burgers on offer.

Amazing American food, classic garage setting. We were served by Lynlie, who was bubbly and extremely enjoying what she was doing. Kept us 😃

Came here for a late breakfast & got the pesto bagel and my partner got the Philly cheesesteak and both of them were absolutely delicious. I’m an American so that says a lot! :)) highly recommend!

Meal with a few of us all ordering a different dish each. Late lunch quite busy and noisy until others left. Which is my preference. Enjoyed the delight of seeing an older guy devouring his freaky sundae. Fabulous Waitress Mel - smiley, knowledgeable, attentive. Checked on our meals (always important) after delivered. Vege Ranch Style Breakfast without the Egg Omelette for me. Natura,l colourful, fresh, homemade Rosti ✅️ I love variety in a meal❗️ Great portions didn't want large. Enjoyable and satisfied ‼️

Meal size was very filling with an abundance of earthy flavours from Portobello mushroom and Halloumi, with the addition of Lemon Juice it created an element of freshness.

We hadn't Dined here for a couple of years. My son wanted to celebrate his 16th birthday with the Fam. All 10 of us had a great meal , food came out fast & was cooked well. A great variety of vegetarian options. The service was the best , the staff are so friendly. Looking forward to my next visit! Highly recommend 👌

Great food that was just what we expected. Good old burgers and hotdogs! Lots of other options too and definitely lived up to the 'large portion' expectations of an American style diner. Awesome memorabilia/nostalgia around the place too. The shakes are unreal and really yummy! The staff were all super friendly and really speedy with orders. Couldn't fault my experience. Just make sure you go on a very very empty stomach!

It is such a great place to eat at any time of day!

Super cool internal design makes you feel like you're over in a real American Diner. Our server was great, super attentive, and never missed a beat! You have to try their SUPER MILKSHAKES they are crazy good!

Always love coming here They've got the best ribs in town too!!

Went here after seeing it while driving through. Got the southern fried chicken wings and a ginger beer float. The drink was awesome as you can imagine. Unfortunately I didn't like the wings, they tasted a little weird and the coating was quite floury, the blue cheese sauce was yum. The waitress was friendly and did ask if I wanted something else, I didn't. I would however go back and maybe try something different.

Hands down best burgers i have ever had! Smashes burgerfuels and burger wisconsons burgers outta the park! Quite criminal that this restaurant has an average rating of 3.9, should definitely be higher.

Wow! American style food, American sized portions!
Burger and roast meals did not disappoint. Bonus is the outstanding staff who obviously really enjoy their work.

I was in NP for two days and I came here twice for lunch. Had the burger both times but with the salad bowl to replace the burger bun due to my dietary requirement. The portion was excellent and very yummy! The service was friendly and helpful. Love the decoration and everything on the menu went with the theme. Highly recommended.

Went to New Plymouth from Auckland for a couple of days and found this little joint. Ordered the steak burger, fried chicken on waffles and donut milkshake. All 3 did not disappoint. Having tried same dishes from Auckland, these took the cake. Not to mention, great service and the decor makes you really feel like your in the states - even the diner girls were dressed the part. Hard to believe the ratings are not as good as you’d expect.

A really nice place!! Been there plenty of times and would go again! The chips and the shakes are great and really tasty!! I go there once in a while after school with my mom. The staff is really nice too and their uniforms are really cute!

Excellent food and service right from the milkshakes to our little one’s food. You guys should open up in auckland. Now, there’s another reason for me to keep on coming back to taranaki.

This place is really wow. This diner sticks out for its sheer joyful appeance, atmosphere and staff. A lot to take in and enjoy and look at. The diner has a big menu full of interesting dishes like comfort foods and original and authentic dishes out of American cuisine at great prices. We enjoyed a creative Waldorf salad with grilled haloumi while the boys ordered big, authentic American burgers and icy shakes. The shakes are stunning and each one turns out looking unique like a piece of art.

We came to celebrate my nieces bday.the food was good delicious and well worth the price tag.
The only issue I had was the waitstart were shining there stainless steel table and floor on the ground all while we were sitting there enjoying our dining experience

Maybe I’m not used to being in the regions but we came in at 7.45 and the waitress said it was a bit late and had to check if the kitchen as open lol. So beware, make sure you come here before 7.30 for dinner! Otherwise they were lovely, set the little guy up with something to draw on which was nice. The food was huuuuuge. My half portion of nachos was a generous meal, wouldn’t have been able to touch the sides of the normal portion! My partner said the ribs were a bit sweet but cooked well. We had no place for dessert but it looked like a definite highlight and will be back for it!

Amazing customer service. We were very happy with our food and dessert, delicious Caesar salad! Love that you can dine cheap or spend up with the variety of items on the menu. Only down side was the wait for the food, we waited an hour which was hard with hungry kids.
Thanks Deluxe Diner 😊

The Americana kitsch may not be everyone’s favourite but the authenticity of the food cannot be denied. Burgers are big, flavorsome and delicious. Only retraction were the supposed curly fries which were more like small potato rubble than anything resembling a chip. This is NP’s answer to Atlanta’s Vortex Bar and Grill where the food and note the fripperies take centre stage. Very busy for 5.30pm on a Tuesday which is always an encouraging review of confidence from other patrons.

Great service, friendly smiles from staff.
Food is awesome, delicious and large portions... Quite easy to over order and fill up quickly as soo many choices. Go with a empty stomach or with a crowd

One year ago I was here eating a big breakfast trying to beat this long standing record of how many cups of joe consumed.

Today was the day I drank 10 cups to beat it. While drinking the only bottomless cup place in np. I really enjoyed the corn waffles with jerk chicken topped with poach egg and bacon.

We were a table of 9 and the staff were very patient with us and help accommodate us extremely well. We were in reasonably early so we got our food pretty quick. The highlights was the chicken and waffle and also the bene!

Bottom line is they nailed today with service and food. Chesney get a special mention as she was fantastic. I will be back no to smash my record but to enjoy more delicious food. We will be back for sure!!!!!

A great place for kids and you'd be best to book, especially on a Saturday night! We didn't book but the lovely staff managed to find a table. We ordered meals that wouldn't take too long and my daughters meals were delivered first. We were provided colouring pens and paper for my daughter to be entertained. There are ALOT of kids there so if you hate kids - don't go.The adults shared a Knickerbocker Glory Sundae "Knight Rider" as you can see by the photo - it was amazing!!

A great place to try the best key lime pie, pecan pie and lemon meringue pie. Their cocktails and fun shakes are do good. I enjoy their take on chicken & waffles, pork ribs and burgers. A great fun environment to eat in. I enjoy looking at their collection of American memories.

Went here with friends for early dinner. The staff was very attentive and friendly. The price is just right for the size of the serving. Nice ambiance, you’ll feel the 70’s is US. Oh the milk shakes are yum!

Went here on holiday with my partner, walking in late at night after we happened to catch a glimpse. The staff were so gracious (especially for our requests to photograph the decor) that we had to go for breakfast the next morning.
Couldn't be happier with our choice. The service was outstanding, the portions enormous, and the food itself more than fine. Will definitely bear a repeat visit, if/when we find ourselves back that way!

Overall: The food was plentiful and tasty, excellent service and great little American diner. 5/5 despite issues due to excellent response and service.

Food: American by name and American by nature. If you desire a solid portion size, you won't get much better or bigger than here. Don't second guess why there's an obesity epidemic, just try any of the mains here. I ordered the Trump burger so you can guess how loud and brash and unashamedly out there this was. I ordered bunless and was met with a huge bowl with two very large beef patties, egg, pickles, plenty of salad, kumara crisps and onion rings. I only just finished it.... given I ate 500g of steak the previous night, I'm no half weight at eating. Wife ordered a salad and this was equally American in stature. Everyone agreed that the food was good and more than adequate. Also ordered the adult milkshakes which were divine. Donkey Punch was my choice and just delicious and seriously filling.

Service: The service was excellent. Sat quickly, menus provided and friendly attention. The entree was provided quickly but for some reason our sons meal wasn't forthcoming. Turned out the kitchen thought they had made it but actually hadn't. The mains were bought out while the last bites of entree were still being chewed so a little bit early. Biggest and sole issue was that a hair was on my wife's plate that wasn't hers. Here's when things really showed excellent service. The waitress instantly apologised and asked did we want it replaced. We said no as it was on the side but she asked again to make sure. There was several checks during the lengthy eating to see how things were. At the time of paying, without anything being said, they provided our sons meal at no cost due to the confusion and half price wife's meal plus her cocktail free. Beyond what I was expecting but an excellent response.

Ambience: Classic American diner decor including music. No air conditioning though which at 28 degrees makes for an uncomfortable dining experience. When we asked we were told that apparently some diners had complained the air conditioning was too cold and preferred the windows open instead. Air conditioning is definitely needed and this is common thus far on our dining out in New Plymouth.

I love the decor in this diner! I’m a big fan of the era and thought it lovely the staff were dressed to fit. Only had a milkshake from here on my visit which my god was tasty, Kit kat VIP shake a must try!

This place was amazing. I have Coeliac disease and was delighted to see how willing the staff were to cater to my dietary requirements.. not to mention how delicious the food was. I was completely reassured that everything I had contained no gluten and was cooked separately. I will definitely return the next time I'm in New Plymouth!

As we entered, we had to swerve to avoid two children playing on the floor. We walked past our table because the waiter just kept walking and then apologized because, as he said "I have this mumbling thing." The drinks came out promptly, and we didn't have to wait too long for the meals. We were entertained as we waited by about eight children, from toddler age to about age 8, who continually wandered up and down the restaurant, stopped to play on the floor next to our table, and hopped up and down outside the windows. At one point, 4 of them had been allowed by their parents to go and play in the carpark, next to Vivian St, one of the busiest roads in New Plymouth. The group of parents sat at their table, opposite ours, and continued their meal and discussion as their progeny milled about. They did look out at the carpark at regular intervals to ensure that none of the children had been run over. Meanwhile, the staff completely ignored the children almost as strenuously as their parents did.

When our food came out, it was reasonable, but the $36 steak was very chewy. My companion decided he would like some desert, but the waiters had all disappeared, so he asked at the counter for a menu. He waited so long for attention that he ended up interrupting our waiter, who was polishing serviette dispensers. Still we waited. Finally the apple pie came, after another reminder. Our waiter, by this time, was busy sweeping the floor, even though it was only 8.30pm.

Imagine our surprise when one of the parents got up to leave with her brood and got into a "Butterfly Preschool" car.

The bill came to $82 for the two of us. Even if the food had been free, I would still rather have been at home with a pie.

Food was just alright. Decor was charming. Staff were helpful and attentive. French fries were decent. A bit on the expensive side for what you get.

Awesome experience! Friendly staff, amazing food. Great value for money, I recommend you to book to avoid disappointments, it gets very busy.

I had the jumbo hotdog, cheesy fries and a caramel donut shake. My wife had the chicken enchilada. The staff were very knowledgeable and knew the menu and how the food was prepared. Prices were reasonable and the food was absolutely delicious. The diner looks really cool and the vibe is amazing. What's not to love. My wife summarised the experience best: "I would drive back here from Auckland just for the food"

We went for a double birthday three teeangers and two adults. Milkshakes were average...nothing what they were like the first time we went. Out of five meals.....only oe was eaten. Nachos were fowl tasteless slop. It was like the meat was boiled in dishwater. Next meal was roast pork with mash. Microwaved stringy meat offcuts, even bits of bacon in the gravy. Mash was over seasoned with cinnamon and pepper. Next was the Baltimore jack....rubbery tasteless, dry gritty meat patty. Dry bread roll...egg was ok. Huge unappetizing dolop of shredded beetroot. Greasy almost cooked curly fries. Next....cheese burger and fries. 14 year old gobbled it down no compliant. Next...Mustang Sally....dry tasteless gritty chicken breast, obviously well overcooked...accompanied with tasteless bun... We asked everyone for two words to sum up their meal. Insipit slop, tasteless, barely edible, unappetizing muck, old and gritty.
This meal was $150....waiting staff were spot on.....diner decor was ok....it was busy and didn't want to make a scene but only 1 out of five meals was eaten. The rest had only one bite. Will never return.

We heard about this place ever since they opened, finally had a chance to come to New Plymouth and try them out !

Wow! What a place! Classic American diner deco with super friendly waiting staffs. The guys and girls dresses up in the classic style, the girls even wore their makeup like it is in the 50s. Great atmosphere.

We ordered the shakes , the burger and the steak! The milkshakes are off the hook! Best ones l ever had in NZ. The meals are massive your typical American size. My steak was cooked perfectly and the mushroom sauce was delicious. The burger was nicely made and super yummy.

The whole dinning experience was amazing. We would definitely head back for more before leaving town
Having read previous reviews we were expecting large American style servings. The mocahinos were not large nor were our sevings. However the food was very well done. I don't know how you cook poached eggs like that but they were perfection. They must have been fresh as fresh to stand up like that and I really liked that the yolk didn't run loose all over the plate. Of these I am a raving fan. The gluten free buckwheat pancakes were a really nice try but mine were a little dry. The breakfast sausage was tasty and satisfying so on the whole our meals certainly set us up for a day exploring your city.

Walked into Deluxe and we were at once blown away by the decor and vibe. Old adds, neon signs, leather booths and a good ol key lime pie in the cabinet took us straight back to the USA.

We ordered the chicken burger and one of the hotdogs with cheese. Unfortunately the main events were not show stoppers. The burger was a good size and had adequate crunch, but lacked a good sloppy feel. More mayo or aoli would have been perfect. The hot dog was a huge dissapointment. The sausage was flavorless and small, the tomato sauce undercooked and grainy. Worst bit was the slice of processed cheese melted on the top. It looks and tastes like plastic. I know it's an American diner but I wanted real NZ cheese, not a kids lunch sandwich.

The saving grace of the meal were the sides. The tangy side salad, shoestring fries, curly fries and onion rings were absolutely moorish! Paired with a very very creamy aoli and a thick beef gravy, I would be back for these deep fried gems alone.

A good try Deluxe but just a little extra refinement will make you world famous in NZ for sure!
Heather Anderson
Nice staff, good environment and amazing food. For my 11 year old son to say they are the best pancakes in his life says it all :) wish we lived closer to could come again soon but will be our stop for sure when in New Plymouth next :)

Just exactly what I wanted - Authentic American Diner experience. Alcoholic Milkshakes are devine! Was also impressed with the tasty crispy chicken burger I had. Huge menu range to choose from. Would go back!

We prebooked a table in Deluxe Diner before our arrival in New Plymouth due to we saw the decor of the restaurant in their website and were attracted to it!

The decor was 50's. Even the waitresses make up and dressed like 50's!

We order pork ribs, 300gm steak, hot dog kid meal and fish and chip kid meal.
The food was above average. The main meals were very big portions, recommend you to share it if you are a small eater. The main came with a good size side salad.
Kid meals came with a fizzy drink or juice and a cone of ice cream was only $14.

We were happy with the food but more in love with its decor!
Amazing milkshakes. Could not finish my pancake stack, very good quality food. Timely considering how busy the place is. Holdup at the counter to pay. Needs multiple tills.

The first time I went here was around when it first opened and was amazed! I ordered a burger meal with curly fries and a VIP shake which was absolutely delicious. Could not fault it and was excited to return!

The second time I went here I was very much looking forward to it as my previous experience was excellent. This time they brought me the wrong order, which they were happy to change. I got a chilli cheese pit bull, which did not taste very pleasant. I took a few bites and could not eat the rest. Felt extremely sick after that and could not finish my VIP shake which I had also ordered. A little apprehensive to return. That being said the atmosphere is cool and the staff are pleasant.

By far have the best milkshakes I've ever tasted! The food is great, a little pricey, but you definitely get what you paid for. Love how the everyone who works there have their own unique style about them too!
