Review Thai Chef's Restaurant New Plymouth - New Plymouth

Good not great. There are better south East Asian restaurants in New Plymouth with better taste and half the price.

Nice restaurant but very quiet. We asked the waitress why and she said the whole town went quiet since covid. Food fresh and fast and good service!

My favourite Thai place in New Plymouth. The food is excellent, the portions are generous, the staff are friendly, and the atmosphere is good. There are good options for vegetarians and gluten free.

Our tofu green curry taste real good, nice deco and vibes, just the table we were assigned is lack of lighting. Only shame of the dishes would be the coconut rice doesn't seem nicely cooked, too much moist and taste overly sweet. So would definitely NOT recommend having coconut rice with the curry cooked with coconut milk, it just ruined the superb flavour of the curry itself. Also won't recommending the entrée "No moon tonight" (prawn cracker) that the flour is too hard to chew, and too less amount of prawn. The boss (I assumed) is generally putting a smiles on in every moments, good service staff as well.

I loved my appetizer more than the main. The coconut sauce with the rotti was a fave. The rice rolls were delish as well. No photos unfortunately as I demolished them immediately. The suicide bomber (in the photo) is nice. Could do with more vege. You need to eat it quick as the bowl gets soggy and the chicken goes chewy. Mocktail was okay

Service was friendly and professional. The dishes were flavorsome and so nicely presented. We had the duck salad and a beef and ginger curry. The serving size was perfect for us. Pricing was very reasonable with plenty of dishes available at under $25. We will be returning.

Beautiful and flavourful food. All dishes came reasonably quick and very generous portion. Service was ok (one lady seems like she doesn’t want to be there)

This is one of the places where I receive #happiness. Sensational Thai food that never fails to make me happy, it's fresh, flamboyant and zesty! We love the fragrant herbs and the seafood. Thai food fused with New Zealand wine. We love the asian #generousity and the #amazing #people. The decor is great, the prices are great and they do takeaway orders to.

Authentic and beautiful interior. Huge restaurant and big menus, lots to choose from! Pad Thai we got was too salty, but when we told the waitress, she got a new batch made for us which tasted a lot better! Friendly service. Recommended if you feel like Asian food, or going out for dinner in a large group and want to share.

Food was amazing and the staff were welcoming. We went in a group of 5 and ordered the banquet which was perfect for us we were very hungry! Definitely a restaurant to visit when you're in New Plymouth

We ordered the Thai Red Curry and it was absolutely delicious. Rice portions are quite small so definitely recommend ordering two-three for two people.

Turns out Google reviewers do know what they are talking about! Chose this place based on the reviews and it was incredible. Every dish absolutely delicious. Glad we ordered more than we could eat because it was even better the next day. Decor was a little tired but that was soon forgotten when you tasted the food. Will be coming here again first chance we can.

It’s a place to make a reservation. Staff were friendly and the food was delicious. Unfortunately, all the dished were missing coriander.

Yet another another amazing night looked after extremely well by the Thai Chef team and stunning food. The Massaman curry was exceptional! Totally recommend this restaurant.

It's only been a week we arrive in NZ and we've finally found food that keeps us warm and makes us feel at home. We ordered chicken tomyum (level Hotter) and beef blackpepper, with some rices too! Love your Thai's vibe, eventhough it was actually too dark for us, but it's okay, we'll still be back for the food you serve.

Have not been there for a long time.. normally do take away.. so did not know if its under new owners or not but the food is still excellent

Food is always great. Service is good because the boss is always watching over his shoulder. Much rather go here than the other Thai in NP. Its larger so seating is almost never a problem. Its clean and friendly.

Had dinner there tonight, very disappointed.. I I’m a lover of pork belly so choose crispy pork salad, beautiful flavours but inedible pork as it was as dry as a piece of old leather , my partner also had a pork dish, luckily for him it was swimming in a curry sauce which softened his meat up slightly (but only just). Coconut rice was way too sweet so we didn’t eat that either, politely informed the manager who said ‘oh sorry they must of deep fried pork too long’ but offered nothing else... paid full price but will never return.

Really decent Thai food in NP 3 out of the 4 dishes we ordered were awesome. Definitely coming back for more whenever we're back in town for work!

If you want a Thai yellow curry with 2 tiny pieces of potato, no capsicum as said, and swimming in a mountain of cheap Watties frozen carrots/corn/peas medley... then this is the place to go!

Friendly warm atmosphere, delicious food. Very flexible with menu adjustments if asked. I absolutely love their peppered beef. If the pan would not be hot, I would lick it.

Delicious Thai food. I've eaten here many times and it is always great. The food and the service are top and the pricing is good. Nice atmosphere too.

New to the area and thought I would try this place after reading the reviews. Not disappointed at all. Service was welcoming and friendly. Great portion sizes, thoroughly enjoyed the Tropical Chicken curry and the spring rolls were a highlight.

I went there with some friends, good service, friendly staff. Is a very nice place to eat. They have variety of food. Nice clean place. :) :)

Great food. Seafood volcanoes was a big surprise. Duck in love is so tasty that we end up sipping the gravy straight from the bowl. Desserts were presented so well. Good value for money. Thai hosts were very attentive & friendly. I wish I could say the same to local staff who were silent & cold as icy stones.

Went with a group of 8 for a booked dinner. We had attentive and friendly service. Everyone enjoyed their meals. I had Chicken Green curry which I try at every Thai place as it is my favourite and was pleased. It was fragrant and hot, just as I expected. We had no real wait for our meals and had a lovely evening.
Definitely returning as are others in the group. Thank you for a great night.

Cheap and the service is good.

Their laksa and satay chicken's flavour is not as good as their Auckland fellow but still tasty for me.

It is the draw back as their laksa is served in small bawl so your chopsticks could easily stir the soup out.

We had a party of 18 adults who dined at Thai Chef New Plymouth last night 30.10.2014. Would like to say from start to finish we had exceptional service. The wait staff were onto us very quickly to take our drink and food orders and were professional, friendly and efficient. We were all very impressed as all our meals were received by us within about 10 mins of each other when they started coming. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting a true authentic Thai dining experience.

4 of us went to the Thai chefs restaurant on Wednesday. We were shown to our table and the ignored for 30 minutes. When the wait staff eventually came to our table, we were not asked if we wanted anything to drink, she sullenly asked if we were ready to order. There was no information given on any of the starters or main courses. The food was mediocre at best, tasting as boring and generic as any fast food noodle house. We will definitely not be wasting our time or money going back.

I cannot recommend Thai Chef Restaurant enough. My friends and I eat there frequently and have found not only the food fantastic but also the service is without doubt absolutely wonderful. Kay been head waiter is a joy, friendly, professional and sees to our every need. Unplanned outings we are seated and never have to wait even when they are full to capacity which is just about every night. Delicious food and wonderful friendly service. Can't ask for more. Thank you Thai Chef

Land of smile? I don't think so.....
Neither myself nor my 7 dining companions would bother going back.
The service was good considering that waiters were mostly high school students…., after sitting for almost 1 1/2 hours waiting no snacks were offer to calm our grumbling tummies and when asked on food estimated arrival and why some customers who arrived after us were already paying their bills, the Thai manager "Kay" was rude, arrogant and told us those customer “pre order” and that was it…… Obviously those people were bitten before with the delay….
I worked in Thailand for 5 years and even in the worst touristy places like Pattaya or Phuket, Thai nationals behaved in such un-courteous manners.
As for the food, too hungry to appreciate....
In conclusion, New Plymouth is a small town, words goes fast, my guests and I work in 4 of the top engineering companies in town….

We went into the Thai Restaurant last night. The service and especially the meal was fantastic. I will be going there again and again. Loved it!! I have passed there, but usually I am off to do shopping and don't pop in. I am so glad we did last night.

Neither myself nor my 8 dining companions would bother going back. The service was terrible and the food, when it eventually turned up almost two hours later was not that impressive

There's only one word for this Restaurant.........FANTASTIC!!!!
We frequently eat Thai food and in fact look for a Thai Restaurant before any other and we have a couple of favourites back home in Aus. This one is up there with the best we've ever had.
They were very busy on a Friday evening but the staff were very polite, seated us promptly, took our order in adequate time and the waitress enquired as to our satisfaction with meal.

Great atmosphere, good service and the food was fantastic, especially for the price range. The menu has to be the largest I've ever seen so there's definitely something for everybody. The Singha Thai Beer went down a treat - you won't be too disappointed if you gave this place a go.

Awesome place. Have been there many times and am constantly impressed. Great food, service and ambience. Always busy which is no mean feat in New Plymouth!

Went there last night with a group of 9. We had a range of meals - green curry, 3 alcoholics, suicide bomber, satay chicken to name a few. Only one flaw was that the waitress was not as clued up on the menu as I would like one to be.. Though there are a heck load of meals on the menu so I'm not surprised.

We regularly get takeaway from Thai Chef's, and they are well priced and always excellent. Finally a more authentic 'Thai' restaurant than others in New Plymouth. Dining in the restaurant we found it much more expensive than takeaways, but the setting and service was ok. Would definitely recommend for takeaway's over dining in.

Was recommended this Thai by a local friend and hotel staff member. Apart from the entertainment provided by one of the other diners, this was a great experience from the service, selection and food . Will definitely recommend this dining experience to others.

Dined out 7 adults and 6 kids including 2 infants. Staff were courteous, efficient and helpful and the food was great. We took our own wine one bottle which we hadn't chilled off properly so they brought out it out in a cooler for us, helpful wait staff in recommending best menu mix for our adult/children ratio. We all would recommend this as a place to dine and would go there again.

Horrible experience, my fiancee and I have over 30 years experience in the hospitality industry(I'm a chef) We thought it might be nice to try Thai chefs for a nice NYE dinner. O boy bad idea, we were seated at a table that had no knives included in the setting. Service was good and our waitress was pleasant enough. Drinks arrived and her champagne was served in a huge red wine glass? I had a cocktail and it was so sweet as to be hardly palatable. Entrees were very average, with very little Thai influence at all. My main was more like very cheap Chinese takeaways. My fiancee had the Thai green curry which was above OK, except that after telling our waiter 2 times that she only wanted it mild, it came out packed with chili and was far to hot! Considered sending it back but gave up after some, deciding that it might be better to eat it rather than waiting again for something equally as crap. skipped the desert and paid the bill which was huge for such poor food and service. Also some of the menu items has quite offensive titles such as "The Alcoholic" and "Suicide bomber". (disgusting and in very bad taste) This would be a great place to take Granny and Granddad out for a pig out but that's it. Sorry Thai chefs, but it was not a nice night.

We loved it! The atmosphere was fantastic, the food was amazing & the staff were polite & efficient we will defiantly be returning Mmmmmmmm sooner rather than later.

We went to the Thai Chef's Restaurant on a Sunday night. The Restaurant was busy but not packed, however it took a while for us to get a table. My teenage son couldn't stop laughing at the sexual innuendo's on the drinks list. Service was shocking, firstly we waited and waited and waited to have our orders taken, and then waited some more to have a drinks order taken. At one point our menu's were removed from us before we even had a chance to order. Then a lack of any cutlery once the meals arrived was a downer. However not all was lost, the banquet that we chose was fantastic, and enjoyed by the 4 of us, even if one of the teenagers wasn't in favour of spicy food. But again, in the end let down by lack of service, so we paid the bill, and even then, not a word was spoken to us.

Absolutely STUNNING food and atmosphere. I went with a large table and meals were exactly as expected and better! Loved everything we received. Service was a little shaky at times, but the staff were extremely apologetic and it is to be expected when a restaurant has been open less than a month, and is already fully booked every night. An all around amazing restaurant and would recommend to everyone!

I went to Thai Chef's Restaurant for dinner last night. I had a chicken Pad Thai which was delicious, but was disappointed by the service. No one offered us beverages or opened our byo bottle of wine, we also didn't receive a bottle of water at the table until requested. Fortunately the bad service was made up by an amazing meal at a reasonable price.
