Food was to die for! Amazing home cooked kai, fantastic hospitality and everything had a welcoming, homely feeling. It was like a home away from home! The hot tub after the hike was such a treat too. Couldn’t recommend this place enough, will definitely be back!
Fantastic Food, great room, spa pool, beautiful location. Lance has the best books, enjoy the open fire.
We had dinner at the The Styx. What a great ambiance. Felt as if we were invited into their home and they served the most delicious home cooked meal. Roasted veggies, lamb, salmon, chickpeas, one of more tasteful than the other.
We were lucky because., not only did we sing and dance together, also it was the Rugby World Cup final and we got to watch it all together afterwards.
Our stay at Out in the Styx was excellent! Lance and Mary are wonderful hosts, the dinner and breakfast are hearty and delicious, and the location is perfect and idyllic. The best part of our stay by far was all the helpful travel tips Lance gave us, helping us discover a beautiful blue spring and tips for the surrounding area. Definitely would stay again.
Out in The Styx was the perfect first night landing place after arrival in Auckland. We chose it based on its proximity to Sanctuary Mountain and based on other reviews. Styx surpassed our expectations in every category. The food was amazing. The view spectacular and host Lance was terrific. Our only regret is that we did not spend more than one night at this location. All the best to Lance,Mary and Nolan. Job well done!!!
Lance & Nolan create a unique dining experience as part of staying at Out In The Styx. Ensuite rooms were great and very cycling friendly. Dinners and breakfasts were included price. Four courses for dinner with very interesting variety of dishes. Loved the food. Location is awesome as a base for cycling groups and have been now 4 times. Lance has excellent knowledge of where to cycle. Really recommend staying here just for the shared dining. Everything else is a bonus!

Have been here several times, such a gorgeous venue! Hosts are friendly, witty, knowledgeable, relaxed, and helpful. Such a great place to get close to nature and away from the hustle and bustle of life. Love the food - always plenty, feels like comforting home-style cooking but I always seem to discover new spices and ingredients here?! Have stayed in bunkhouses and ensuite rooms, both are comfortable but I particularly like the themed rooms out the back, so private. Love how the mountain is so close, and you can have a spa at night! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
What a cool place this is. Rustic but charming restaurant with great view of Mount Maungatautari and a short drive to the bird sanctuary up on the slopes of that mountain. Lunch was served like you would serve a group if friends at home by placing all the dishes on the table including vegetarian, roast meat and veges plus dessert with delicious hand-made ice cream and everyone in the restaurant just helped themselves and the food kept coming out of the kitchen. They catered to our group (Volunteers for Riding For The Disabled) plus quite a good size group celebrating a 60th wedding anniversary. It was a tad noisy but each group respectfully quietened down a bit so the other group could make speeches. Thete is a bar, the food was great, the owners were lovely and we understand they also offer accommodation. I highly recommend this spot for a dining experience.

Lance, Mary and Nolan you are excellent hosts. Friendly, accommodating and really made me feel like I was at home. The French dinner themed food was amazing, the guests all commented how lovely it was. The views, location and hot tubs also made being there memorable. I will be back in the future for a weekend away. Thank you so much for making my weekend so special.
I love it here! Been with class trip and again for a girls weekend. Looking forward to taking my partner. Great for some R&R!!! Amazing food went back for seconds on everything! And it's in a great location to get around if you want to explore.
What a uniquely welcoming stay. From the minute we ( neice and i) arrived till departure we were greeted and treated as family. Nothing was too much trouble! We were transferred to our mountain walk entry point with clear instructions and there was a warm spa awaiting our arrival back. The meals and homeliness comforts were superb. The bird life directly around the lodge was abundant! I will return! Absolutely loved and recommend it! Donna Rutherford
I have been to Out in the Styx twice now and have loved it both times! Great food first of all, different to anything I would/could make at home - so fresh and delicious! The hosts are great company and the location is quiet & peaceful - especially when having a night cap in the hot tub ;) Great walks around the area and close to the Waikato river which was great when i visited in the Summer. Recommend to all who want a relaxing break from the City
