Review Black Rice - North Shore

Great food, which is delicious and was very quickly delivered to our table after ordering. Friendly staff. Highly recommended, and will definitely be back again.

I had dinner here with my son and we were very impressed and will definitely go back. We had Takoyaki, dumplings, triple cooked pork belly, roast duck salad and a bowl of black rice. All of it was delicious! The meals came out quickly and the staff were very personable. In fact we were incredibly impressed because there was a customer from 'you-know-where' who was arguing the written policy with one of the staff and he was ridiculously relentless, going on at her for at least half an hour. She dealt with him with incredible grace (quite undeserved) and she never once lost her composure. What a trooper! It was a great experience from start to finish. Well done!

bring the family here for dinner, very nice eye fillet, kids love the fried chicken. just the lamb is a bit dry.
Dr Brett Heagren
Dined here with a friend and we were very pleased with the quality of the food and the service. We went for the dumplings, Crispy Sichuan Chicken, Fruity Sweet & Sour Pork, and Black Rice plus a couple of Tiger beers. The dishes were all tasty and certainly best enjoyed as a shared experience. Would certainly dine here again to try some of their other dishes.

The food was good but nothing really blew me away EXCEPT for the king oyster mushrooms. This was actually recommended to us by the staff and it was delicious and amazing. In general the staff were really kind and friendly and the food came out quickly.

Good for an evening out. Delicious food and fast service. The place is very popular with the locals so please do book in advance. Parking could be a problem. Extensive menu that accommodates every taste. Wine list could improve but we managed to find a good Chardonnay from Elephant Hill. Very friendly staff.
Jenn Javier
Loved the food, nice ambience and the service is impeccable. It is a bit pricey and serving is small but great experience over all. Booking is recommended as the seating is limited and it can get busy. I recommend the pork and shrimp. The desserts are okay but nothing special.

Amazing place to eat, staff are super friendly and wow the Sizzling Beef Eye fillet is delicious!!! šŸ˜šŸ› The pork belly was also quite good šŸ„¢ See you next time!
Paul Brandwood
Very impressed with the high standard of the dishes. Execution and presentation were excellent. Good menu selection and friendly service. Will definitely come back again to try other dishes.

The dumplings here are homemade, they are juicy, fresh and delicious, as are the xiao long bao. The pork belly is also a specialty here. There are an excellent variety of foods to choose from, though some dishes like the sweet and sour pork are not as tasty as from other Chinese restaurants. The service is very fast and the restaurant is clean and tidy. However the prices are quite steep without 1st table - $35 for the pork belly and $5 for a small bowl of rice.

Was invited for a Zomato Foodie Event at Black Rice to try their Banquet Menu! This beautifully decorated Chinese and Thai Fusion restaurant is nestled in the Albany Complex housing other restaurants. The oriental fish ornaments hung on the wall was very creative; even their bathroom screams authenticity! The menu consisted of Oysters, Crunchy School Prawns, Jasmine Tea-Infused Salmon, Crispy Duck Rolls, Kung Pao Chicken, Duck Curry, Flying Tiger, Market Fish, Green Beans and Basi Banana in Chinese Toffee. The oysters were incredibly fresh and the Hoisin sauce was a playful and intricate combination! Crunchy school prawns popped in the mouth like popcorn: crunchy, flavoursome and great as a snack with some beers! The salmon was beautifully smoked, sitting on a bed of spicy and sour slaw that bursts on the palate with tanginess! Crispy duck rolls were delicious! This is a play off the traditional Beijing duck pancakes. The duck breast was satisfying and full of favour; albeit the meat was a bit too tough. The Kung Pao Chicken was another flavourful dish that would go great if washed down with beers! However, be mindful of the Chilli because there are heeeeaps! Definitely not for the faint-hearted. I loved the duck curry! Creamy without being greasy and was interestingly paired with grapes, Lychee and pineapple! Who wouldā€™ve thought! The fruits really uplifted the heaviness of the curry; I had to ask for more roti to mop away the curry sauce! My top two favourite dishes would be the Flying Tiger and Market Fish. The flying tiger is a seared skirt steak that absolutely MELTS in the mouth. Itā€™s got a subtly salty flavour and the roasted-chilli dressing paired so well with it. If youā€™re looking for a party of flavours, look no further than the market fish! Itā€™s a whole fried snapper swimming in a pool of hot, spicy, sweet and sour sauce that just explodes! The fish is incredibly tender and juicy and honestly itā€™s like biting into a fruit ā€” it literally feels like itā€™s burst. The Basi Banana is a Chinese dessert best eaten when itā€™s fresh hot out of the pan, or else the toffee gardens and sticks! Hot soft chunks of banana was encased in a crunchy coating of toffee, and paired perfectly with matcha ice cream ā€” a genius spinoff between hot and cold! The owner Dante is also very friendly and puts a lot of passion and thought into the menu and interior. I would recommend this place for both Chinese and non-Chinese diners. Food: 10/10 Price: - Ambience: 10/10 Service: 10/10

Asian Fusion restaurant in Albany. Delicious food that tickles your taste buds. They have a Vegan menu, as well as many choices of meat dishes. There is a lunch express menu which is good value. Nice decor and atmosphere, including outdoor seating area

Pandemic eat-out ... As recommended by friends, this is a must try eating place. Let bed the squid and takoyaki entree. The Black rice with truffle and the pork belly was great combination for us. Would love to go back for for Asian fusion delights.

Life is beautiful NZ
Came here for the first time. Luckily it wasn't a busy night so we got our food pretty quick. Enjoyed the combination of 5 dishes for $54.- Fish market was fresh also great services.Thank you

Food variety and quality is excellent - the dumplings are homemade, sweet & sour pork isn't greasy or made with canned ingredients, duck is made fresh. Service is also fast, but without using 1st table some things like the duck are a bit expensive. Still well worth visiting in the future.

We were super excited to try this place. We absolutely loved the look of the menu. <br/><br/>We arrived and were seated immediately. The waitress was cold and didnt seem like she wanted to be there so it wasnt a good start, but hey we were there to enjoy the food. <br/><br/>We ordered a few dishes. Probably a bit too many but we couldn't decide. #firstworldproblems<br/><br/>The first dish arrived - the Sichuan squid. Lacked sichuan flavour, thick batter, sugary sweet dipping sauce. Not a good start but excited for the rest. The five spice chicken came next, the same thick batter. No salt on the batter let alone five spice. Then the barbecue char siu pork with chinese guacamole, honey, plum sauce arrived. It was 4 slices of pork, sitting on chopped avocado doused with vinegar on a puffed rice/grain square you give to children for morning tea. The flavors didnt work, and we picked off the pork and left the rest. Next dish was the soft shell crab, again, it promised apricots, sushi rice, and a japanese dressing. Instead it was dry useasoned mixed cabbage salad and the same puffed rice squares!!!!! No sushi rice, no apricots. The baos were average, had the same dry cabbage/carrot/greens mix that didnt work, and we couldn't even finish one together. The biggest let down though, was the typhoon bay lamb ribs. It stated lamb ribs with chilli, garlic, blackbean, laver among a few others. None of which were present in the actual dish. The lamb lacked flavour. It was simply lamb pieces, coated in panko crumbs and fried. Absolutely no flavor at all. We had one piece each and it was flavorless. <br/><br/>The peking duck was the only dish I'd recommend. The pancakes were thin and light, the duck was cooked perfect. The skin wasnt crispy but still delicious. <br/><br/>Overall, we were really disappointed and will not be back.

After hearing mixed reviews about Black Rice Fusion, I decided to come and try it out and make my own judgements. <br/><br/>Firstly. we were seated and waited 10 minutes (which included a solid minute of saying 'excuse me' to the waiter who just ignored us and walked back and forth), before we got menus and water. We ordered almost immediately as we had already looked at the menu beforehand but it still took approximately 30 minutes for any food to arrive. <br/>None of the food arrived at the same time, each dish came out one by one, after we finished one dish we got the next dish and so on. <br/><br/>It also felt really off that ALL the food came out before the truffle fried rice - we had actually had all the plates cleared before our rice even arrived, we ended up asking to cancel the rice, in which the rice immediately came out. Usually at any Asian restaurant, fusion or not, the rice comes out with the dishes because you're meant to eat them together... I'm not sure why, the kitchen decided it was a great idea to give us our dishes and wait for us to finish before serving the rice. <br/><br/>Secondly, if you're basing what you're going to order off of the photos on zomato (which is what we did), you might be sorely disappointed. Although there was nothing wrong with the plating/display of each dish, everything was garnished exactly the same - with unseasoned/no dressing generic cabbage salad mix - felt like the kind you get from the supermarket. <br/>The SiChuan Pan Fried Snapper was a miss. Besides the spicy SiChuan pepper, there was no sesame/peanut butter taste... rather there was no taste at all, besides spicy, bland and overcooked. <br/>The sizzling lamb w/ Lotus bun was overcooked and tough - the only redeeming thing about this dish was really the lotus bun which was pretty normal. <br/>The fried chicken - (would you like more chicken with your batter?) was a lot of underseasoned batter - I felt like this would have been better if it had a tangy sauce rather than mayo, or even a bit more salt and pepper in the batter. Definitely couldn't taste the five spice, let alone any spices.<br/>The Soft Shell crab was decent compared to everything else, the only thing that would have made it better is if the two pieces were not stacked on top of each other as one piece was drenched in sauce and the other did not have any.<br/>Overall, food wise, didn't really feel the "fusion" aspect of the restaurant name. Just felt like an uninspiring attempt at fusion at most. <br/>TLDR; really slow service, really bland food and not really fusion.
W Zhu
The serving is too slow. We had to wait half hour between two dishes.
Cathylin Naval-Soriano
The place, ambiance and service is good but weā€™re not satisfied with our orders.<br/>We ordered yin yang prawn cups and cripy orange chicken and vegan dumpling.<br/>For the prawn cups the flavours were on point with large servings for sharing but the taste of the mayo was overwhelming because it was drenched in mayo. It could have been better if the sauces were separated to maintain the crispiness. <br/>For the crispy chicken orange we did not like it all because the orange flavour was too subtle and could have been dominant instead of tasting sugary.<br/>
Alas
Food is good but a bit too pricey. Service was great. It's Chinese fusion which was nicely done.

Lovely evening and great food! Would recommend trying this place out!

First time trying this place; couldn't fault a single thing! Quick, friendly service from knowledgeable staff. Food was outstanding and well priced. We will be back.

Normally eat in but decided to get take away this night. Paid $3 for less than a handful of rice to go with my pork belly. Feeling a little but ripped with the portion size.
S J
The portion size of each dish is very small... too small šŸ˜¢<br/>The winner was the BBQ Pork. So yummy. Wanted more! It was the first time I felt pork is very tasty.
Hannah Suarez
Decent food! Really enjoyed the hawker rolls, pad Thai, and the fried bananas! However the portions are very small and pricey for "large sharing plates". Overall a really good experience though, and lovely service from our waitress.

Went this restaurant at late night, love the food, and the staffs are so kindly here. And I strongly recommend you guys to try the black rice pudding.
Shontayne Hape
Amazing food. You wonā€™t regret coming šŸ˜‹we ordered the 4 small + 1 side small share. Super satisfied and the flavours are out of this world. The black Asahi went down a treat also. Will be back soon.

Great food, awesome to see a good Asian fusion restaurant in Albany. The staff where really friendly and the food was great. <br/>Service 9/10<br/>Food 8/10

I have been here twice and will continue to keep coming. The decors are very pretty with the flowers and fairylights. It is also very cosy. Food here is always amazing, with the asian fusion flavours. Would highly recommend!

Came here with my dad today. Didn't know they were Gold partners but got a couple of drinks free which was great.<br/><br/>Their business lunch deals are good and had the bbq small share plate which was juicy and cooked to perfection.<br/><br/>Best place to eat among all the shops around the area, and I have tried almost all of them!!<br/><br/>Friendly service. Keep it up guys!!
Moonpieeats
These Asian fusion dishes were delicious! We got the combo which comes with 4 small sharing dishes and 1 add on. We went for the asian greens as the add on, steak, bbq pork, papaya salad and a chicken hawker roll! The most out standing dish was definitely the hawker roll. Everything was flavoursome and service was great! Lovely atmosphere and very busy!
Vania
The food was absolutely delicious! My friends and I went for dinner Tuesday night. We tried Szechuan pepper squid, Hawker rolls (to die for), wok fried greens, tofu Panang curry and Duck red curry as well as Vegetarian phad Thai. I couldnā€™t pick a favorite dish! All the flavours were fresh and perfectly balanced. My only regret is that we didnā€™t stay for dessert. We will be back!
Marie
Amazing service, great atmosphere. Probably the most beautiful restaurant I have ever been to. Heaters everywhere was so warm and comfortable. I got the 5 share plates + side for $59. The pork bun charcoal bao was fantastic! Although some of the salads tasted the same, and the vege side plate was a bit bland. Not enough sauce - we were scrambling to scrape sauce from each plate! Do not bite into the pork bun it will go into your teeth lol! Had a great time there. Never had fusion, itā€™s a bit weird but it was an experience!
Marieanne
Nice restaurant food was cooked to perfection. Although it was a cold night the restaurant was warm within. We were greeted at the door by the maƮtre de who made us feel very welcome. We will definitely go back.

Thanks team for making my experience good.<br/>Specially I requested for something that wasn't part of their menu and they managed to make custom order for my little one.<br/>Enjoyed my vegetarian dish and my partner enjoyed his chicken dish.<br/>Will come back soon to try more dishes.

Perfect place for our ladies night out. Cocktails were superb, can definitely recommend their Sangria - a work of art. Food is as delicious, with our favourites being the lamb ribs, pork bao and pad Thai. We will definitely be visiting again.
Laura Oliveira
Good pad Thai but not the best Iā€™ve ever had. Was a little bland and missed that little bit of sweetness. My gin and tonic also tasted like it was made with soda water, I asked the waiter but he confirm they used tonic? An average experience!
Chad Shen
Weā€™ve ordered the duck green curry, pork belly as mains, buns and a beef entree they called it crying tiger. <br/><br/>The beef entree was very thin and dry, taste like homemade BBQ, is it why the tiger is crying? The buns entree has cream thatā€™s way to thick, you can hardly taste the natural tastes of the ingredients. <br/><br/>The pork belly is okay-ish, thick and crispy skin, but very fatty and oily, the fat drips down from the lips if not careful. they added a little green papaya and other veggies with the source thatā€™s too boring to comment on. <br/><br/>For the duck curry, weā€™ll, the duck meat was kinda dry and thick. The curry source has not much taste of lemongrass which is the signature taste of Thai curry. Also thereā€™s grapes, pineapples cubes in the curry, is that supposed to be innovative? If yes, it wasnā€™t interesting at all.<br/><br/>The service was also sub par, nobody seemed to care how customer felt about the food. <br/><br/>Disclaimer: Itā€™s the first time we were there to dine, thereā€™s no reason to hate or be friendly. Never felt this disappointed for any restaurant ever before.<br/>
Sam Rosser
I took my parents here for Mother's Day and I would recommend! The service was great, especially given the crowds of people that were flooding through the door. The food and drinks were quick to arrive and everything we tried was really tasty.<br/>We're glad we went and I look forward to visiting again.
Alana
We ordered prawn papaya salad and two other big sharing plates. The prawn papaya salad has good flavours but the portion size is not big enough to justify the price tag. Our two sharing plates did not arrive at the same time which is ridiculous. We considered them as main dishes per person although they label it as 'big sharing plates'. When I asked the staff if the two dishes should come at roughly the same time, he said that those are sharing dishes so usually they don't come together. This absolutely doesn't make sense. These two sharing plates are the main course of the meal so should be served together at the same time rather than one after another. My partner almost finished his before mine came out.<br/><br/>This is a very infuriating experience and I will definitely not go back again. I've seen other tables having slow service as well and a couple finished their two big sharing plates before their third one came and they had that taken away instead. The quality of the food doesn't justify the wait time and the price tag doesn't justify the quality of food.<br/><br/>In short, very disappointing and an utter waste of time and money.

2.5 put of 5. I personally think Asian fusion type would be hardest to impress asian customer like myself. If itā€™s done right, it would be one of the memorable dining experiences you will have which unfortunately this place fail to achieve to my standards. I am always keen to try new restaurants especially Asian Fusion ones but I could not find much Asian flavour profiles. I personally wouldnā€™t really recommend to my foodie friends but if you happened to never tried any Asian Fusion restaurant, this place would be a good starting place. I am sorry to say, definitely not a ā€˜must tryā€™ Asian fusion place..
Jing
Itā€™s in the restaurant hub in Albany. Great Asian fusion. So if you like to have some Asian flavours but not traditional Asian food, good place to go. The environment is also very nice. I like their tapa style. You can share with friends.
Olivia
Service here was really good, and the food tasted pretty nice, but itā€™s hard to tell what the portion sizes are going to be like. Ordered 2 phad Thaiā€™s and 2 other dishes between 5 people and they only filled three small bowls one round per dish .. ended up having to order something else because we were still so hungry.. Phad Thai was filled with mung beans to make it look bigger but hardly any to go around. A little disappointing

First time dining at Black Rice Fusion Asian. Service is 10/10, Food is 10/10, Venue 10/10. Best experience yet. Definitely coming back for more.

Visited this place today for my mums birthday lunch. I love the atmosphere of the place and the food we ordered were Devine! I highly recommend to visit and try this place, you will not be disappointed. These were sharing plates so everyone got to try it all. There a few dishes that I forgot to take photos of. Nice friendly staff too.

I haven't even finished my meal yet and I felt the need to post this! I've got an annoying friend that always sarcastically asks me "how good?!" and before u can answer he would say "too good!" - well this place was just that. An incredible yet random find. Laksa + Green Beans = Wowzah. Full of flavour - reasonable size - quick service. Would deff come back again. Ace experience!

Myself and 2 friends had lunch the other day at Black Rice. The restaurant was comfortable and staff very nice. 2 of us shared the 5 dishes for $59.00 and the other had the vegetarian pad thai. The $59 shared lunch we had the pepper squid, seared beef, bao burger buns with pulled pork, prawn hawker roll and the crispy snapper. All was very tasty with lovely flavours. The disappointing part was the crispy snapper was just about non exisistent 2 tiny pieces and a 3rd even tinier piece, we were hunting for it under the salad. Dont bother with the prawn hawker roll, pick another flavour option. Again prawns just about non exsistent 2 of the tiniest prawns on each half.<br/>The pad thai was apparantly very nice and it did look good..Still may possible go back and try some other dishes

Went here for Valentine's Day and it was really good. The atmosphere and decor is really nice and the staff where great. We ordered the fried chicken, soft shell crab and prawns and the salmon. It's a nice place to eat in Albany

First time trying Asian Fusion at this place. Glad to report they did not disappoint. The food was perfect and good portion sizes. <br/>Waitress was also very knowledgeable and attentive. <br/>Love the decor as well. You can choose to be seated inside or opt for a more comfy feel outside, fully covered and with beautiful cushions as well. <br/><br/>Overall score:<br/>Ambience 5/5<br/>Service 5/5<br/>Food 5/5<br/>Value for money 5/5<br/>Will definitely recommend and return to try other things on the menu.

Lovely place, beautiful lights inside. Great cocktails! Food was good, great presentation and came out quickly. Favourite was the hawker roll, the sauce was amazing.

4.5/5 Taste<br/>4.5/5 Display <br/>4.5/5 Quantity <br/>4/5 Customer Service<br/><br/>Fantastic Asian fusion Restaurant near Albany Mall.<br/><br/>Came for Zomato Gold but noticed that it was 2+2 drinks instead of 1+1 food. Still ordered two mains anyway and it was really worth it. <br/><br/>Pork belly was pretty big with heaps of salad on top, salad was delicious especially thinly sliced mangos.<br/><br/>Duck curry was thick and rich, I hate a lot of restaurants who serve runny curry and I was glad that this place was not one of those.<br/><br/>
Vivian C
I had high hopes for this place because it looked so lovely from the outside and online, however I left this restaurant rather disappointed.Ā <br/><br/>We ordered the Charred Roti w/ Peanut Dipping Sauce, Crispy Pork Belly, and Pad Thai.Ā <br/><br/>The meal started off quite well with the roti as it was flavourful and fresh while the peanut sauce was aromatic and sweet. However, everything just went downhill from there. The crispy pork belly was not crispy at all, in fact it was rather hard, dry and not very pleasant to chew.Ā <br/><br/>Pad thai is one of my favourite dishes ever, so I had to give it a try here. I regretted it immediately. This was the worst pad thai Iā€™d ever had in my life. It felt like everything was just thrown on the plate without being stir-fried together and without any seasoning whatsoever. The two mains were rather overpriced and for the quality, I felt like they were definitely not worth it.<br/><br/>Service was friendly and the interior design of the place was beautiful, so it hurts me that I have to leave such a poor review but the food was simply too unsatisfactory.
Se Yee Elser
This trendy looking place was serving amazing food and friendly staffs. Highly recommended to visit when you pass by Albany. Try the entree side which is enough for 2 of us
Foodie Dudie
Three words to describe our 14 people team lunch: small, slow, and yum.<br/>To be honest, the food was good, but the size was way too small. The waiter told me the large plate would feed two people, so I ordered their small plate, however, the small plate was only a piece of steak! It was really small, so I have to order another one which the price was higher than the larger plate then. Two of us was waiting for the food for longer than ONE HOUR! If you have aĀ plan after the meal, probably not go there, or at least not during lunch or dinner time?
Nicole Tran
I went here a few weeks ago and had a great experience (was not a Zomato Gold memeber at the time) and I regretted that I didnā€™t save the photos of the food because it was amazing! Anyway, the food was full of flavour and well balanced. Nicely presented by the lovely staff. I must say this is one of the best Asian fusion restaurants in Auckland Keep up the amazing work team!
LoveLims
We ordered the package 5 for $59 and all of them were satisfying. The only downside was the size were a bit small. Althour our waiter told us that the portion was for two people, but weā€™re big eaters! Also ordered salmon, pad thai and pineapple fried rice. The salmon was wrapped in banana leaf and that added a fragrant smell. Yum!
LisaH
Good taste of Thai Fusion cuisine. Pork belly is very yummy with the mango salad. Very good idea and creation of food. The decor of restaurant is also pretty cute. Good price too.

Came for lunch with a friend after reading great reviews about this place. We were very surprised to be the only people in the restaurant, not surprisingly the service was great and the food was lovely. I recommend the Thai ceviche to anyone and everyone, just tell the waitress your heat requests before ordering.
Kathleen.jumamoy
Very flavoursome food! Good value for money and left feeling very full! recommend it to close friends and family. Loved the ambience, itā€™s quite unique

Tried this place for lunch for the first time. The setting was very nice. We had their any 5 sharing dishes for $59. It's excellent value for the quality food and the amount of servings we had. It was deliciousness overload. Although we got double charged for our drinks but they quickly rectified & apologised for it but this doesn't deter me from coming back.<br/><br/>Excellent Asian fusion and great service.<br/>
Bayley
Had been looking forward to coming here for so long and it did not disappoint!!! So many delicious options on the menu, and great deals for bulk orders of small plates. We ordered the chicken wings, seared beef, seared pork, squid, and lamb ribs. All 10/10 in terms of flavour and freshness. The wings and pork were a stand out to me. Theyā€™ve got an awesome range of paleo, keto, vege, and even a separate vegan menu. The only reason itā€™s not a 5 is because the atmosphere wasnā€™t quite there, the wait staff seemed a bit nervous, and the music wasnā€™t really on theme, but I think these are easy fixes that will become seamless with more experience. Will be back šŸ˜
Shanika Wijerathna
My wife and I randomly googled and found this place. This was one of the best Asian fusion restaurants we were able to find in Albany area..
Lauren Ambags
Absolutely divine! We chose to go with the 5 shared platters between 2 people rather than a main which for us was a great option. The favourite was definitely the chicken hawker roll - it was simply amazing. Worth noting that the crispy snapper had a bit of a spice kick to it (for us anyway), so bear that in mind if youā€™re not very tolerant to spice (still delicious though). The raspberry panna cotta for dessert was superb, as was the hot toffee banana (though this oneā€™s quite sweet!). Cocktails pictured are also highly recommended (cardamom gin and tonic, almond whisky sour and lychee mojito). All round wonderful in a nicely decorated setting.

Great authentic Asian fusion restaurant. We had the $59 special which is 5 small plates to share. This is great value was of tasting many different dishes. The food is amazing with beautiful tastes and textures. We will definitely be back.

Came here for dinner the other day. Food were delicious, pork crakling was really good. Duck curry packed with flavours and oysters were fresh. The rice did not come with duck curry so yoy need to order extra if you order this dish! Ambience was elegant<br/>Food 3.5/5<br/>Ambience 4.5/5<br/>Service 4.5/5

We visited this restaurant last week and were welcomed by 2 amazing cute girls who directed us to our seats. I was blown away with the decor and lights. It did add value to the whole set up.<br/>Well when it comes to food - I would say it was a hit and miss ..The prawns we ordered had the black vein hanging around ....THICK ones... they were not cooked well either with an off smell.<br/>The soft shell crab wasnt the freshest I have had. We ordered chicken and it was too saucy for our liking.Overall the food part was little disappointing.
Auckland Joyce
love every dishes we have ordered especially the deserts, feel best deserts I had in Auckland. very charming cocktail as well. strongly recommended for meet and families dinner.

Having heard great things about this restaurant and being on the same road as my office it seemed only logical it was time to give it a try.<br/><br/>A birthday celebration was in order for a friend and they let me chose the place, I chose well I did (modest much).<br/><br/>Parking on a Saturday evening was a challenge but there is plenty of street parking in the area, you may just have a little walk before and after dinner.<br/><br/>Friendly welcome when entering the restaurant and we were quickly seated at our reserved table. Wait staff were all super friendly and attentive. Most at the table chose the small sharing plates which is 5 plates for $59. Depending on how hungry you are this may be enough food although you can always order some more. The BBQ lamb ribs by far the highlight of the meal!!!<br/><br/>We also all had some desert, I went for the ice cream trio, GREAT presentation and great ice cream especially the chocolate one. The basi banana in hot toffee was also worth the wait (they literally warn you about the wait).<br/><br/>Over all a great night out, great company, great food and a restaurant I will happily return too.<br/><br/>Food: 88%<br/>Ambience: 80%<br/>Service: 90%<br/>Coffee: N/A

Me and friends walked out of the restaurant feeling less than 50% full - the food size was so small but pricey. Places like Tick tock or Mix have way better food. Will not come back again.

Had the laksa super bowl, šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘ very authentic and the pad Thai is not bad too....overall good, just a little pricey I reckon ā˜ŗļø very clean and neat place, love the deco

Went for lunch on Sunday, October. It was challenging finding parking as there are dozens of other eating places around full of people in them. The Black Rice Fusion is beautifully design inside. They re not busy at all and I can see why. Crispy Duck Roll $20 for 4 pc. It's one quartered pancake with 4 tiny slices of duck and 4slices of cucumber- no flavour or crispness . FLYING TIGER $32 dish was piece of sliced steak sprinkled with powdered rice and not even handful of cupsicum/cucumber/carrot mix with chilli sauce on the side. My steak was overcooked anyway. Overpriced heavely. Laksa was the only dish I liked.<br/>There are lots of places serving excellent whole peking duck for $ 60 or proper steaks for the same price.<br/>
STRADS
There must be more than 20 eateries in the vicinity of Black Rice Fusion Asian, making car-parking a real issue. We started with a few little dishes - roasted duck rolls, rice rolls, crunchy shrimps, salt & pepper squids. all of them were very ordinary; the shrimps were not crunchy & didn't appeal to me at all. Pad Thai was good - not too sweet. Deep-fried market fish was delicious with tamarind sauce & bits of nuts; wok-fried green beans was a rather small dish. The best of all was banana in hot toffee with a scoop of green tea ice-cream. In general, Black Rice definitely qualifies as a fusion eatery with a pretty innovative menu.<br/>(Food - 3.5/5; Service - 4/5; Ambience - 3.5/5)<br/>Visited on 20 October 2018

This restaurant had a modern and relaxing atmosphere, perfect for a nice dinner, lunch or a special occasion. We had the flying tiger, the duck curry, rice, and basi banana for dessert and we had no regrets! To top it all of, we used the entertainment book voucher for a discount. Will definitely be back. Highly recommended :)

Had lunch here, decor was new and fresh. Stuck to the lunch menu, had the fresh summer rolls, the duck rolls, the s&p squid and the hawker roll. The highlight was the hawker roll, rotti was crispy and delicious!

This place is beautiful. The vibe offered was chill and cozy with cute indoor as well as outdoor design (somewhat felt like we were in our backyard having dinner lazing on the couches).<br/><br/>We ordered a variety of dishes and I'd have to say they were all exceptional with flavorful seasonings it was hard to decide on a favourite!<br/><br/>Would definitely come back for this delight!ā™”<br/><br/>Atmosphere: Clean and prettily decorated 5/5<br/>Vibe: Comfortable and cozy 5/5<br/>Food: Exceptional 5/5<br/><br/>ā˜†ā˜†ā˜†ā˜†ā˜†

Visited this place with my family for dinner expecting some good quality Asian food. Quality is definitely there, presentation great. However at the end of the day no matter what you call it, its asian food. Asian food is expected to be full of flavour with generous portions and we didn't really get that compared to what we payed for. We ordered the peking duck rolls, stir fried vegetables, pad thai and kung pao chicken. Duck rolls and pad thai were amazing however the kung pao chicken was very disappointing, 20% chicken pieces 80% inedible pieces of chili. Not a scene for dinner out with the family but perfect for a date with your significant other.

Was invited for a Zomato Foodie Event at Black Rice to try their Banquet Menu! <br/><br/>This beautifully decorated Chinese and Thai Fusion restaurant is nestled in the Albany Complex housing other restaurants. The oriental fish ornaments hung on the wall was very creative; even their bathroom screams authenticity! <br/>The menu consisted of Oysters, Crunchy School Prawns, Jasmine Tea-Infused Salmon, Crispy Duck Rolls, Kung Pao Chicken, Duck Curry, Flying Tiger, Market Fish, Green Beans and Basi Banana in Chinese Toffee. <br/>The oysters were incredibly fresh and the Hoisin sauce was a playful and intricate combination! <br/>Crunchy school prawns popped in the mouth like popcorn: crunchy, flavoursome and great as a snack with some beers! <br/>The salmon was beautifully smoked, sitting on a bed of spicy and sour slaw that bursts on the palate with tanginess! <br/>Crispy duck rolls were delicious! This is a play off the traditional Beijing duck pancakes. The duck breast was satisfying and full of favour; albeit the meat was a bit too tough. <br/>The Kung Pao Chicken was another flavourful dish that would go great if washed down with beers! However, be mindful of the Chilli because there are heeeeaps! Definitely not for the faint-hearted. <br/>I loved the duck curry! Creamy without being greasy and was interestingly paired with grapes, Lychee and pineapple! Who wouldā€™ve thought! The fruits really uplifted the heaviness of the curry; I had to ask for more roti to mop away the curry sauce! <br/>My top two favourite dishes would be the Flying Tiger and Market Fish. The flying tiger is a seared skirt steak that absolutely MELTS in the mouth. Itā€™s got a subtly salty flavour and the roasted-chilli dressing paired so well with it. <br/>If youā€™re looking for a party of flavours, look no further than the market fish! Itā€™s a whole fried snapper swimming in a pool of hot, spicy, sweet and sour sauce that just explodes! The fish is incredibly tender and juicy and honestly itā€™s like biting into a fruit ā€” it literally feels like itā€™s burst. <br/>The Basi Banana is a Chinese dessert best eaten when itā€™s fresh hot out of the pan, or else the toffee gardens and sticks! Hot soft chunks of banana was encased in a crunchy coating of toffee, and paired perfectly with matcha ice cream ā€” a genius spinoff between hot and cold! <br/><br/>The owner Dante is also very friendly and puts a lot of passion and thought into the menu and interior. I would recommend this place for both Chinese and non-Chinese diners. <br/><br/>Food: 10/10<br/>Price: -<br/>Ambience: 10/10<br/>Service: 10/10<br/>

My partner and I were lucky enough to be a part of the Zomato meet up at Black Rice last week. Itā€™s not often we head over the shore for a week night dinner so it was a bit of a drive for us. Great look and feel to this place! There is a nice indoor outdoor flow, with the courtyard area fully covered and well heated ā€“ perfect for winter. The staff were attentive and did a good job catering for us throughout the night. <br/><br/>Starting off with some drinks my partner and I made a beeline for the Lychee mojito. Refreshing and not too sweet this was the perfect start to the night. Would definitely recommend this drink, whether you love mojitos or lychee it did not disappoint. <br/><br/>We started off with a selection of small plates ā€“ Freshly sucked oysters, Crispy duck rolls, Crunchy school prawns and Jasmine tea smoked salmon. Highlights were definitely the Crunchy school prawns! Deep fried to perfection and well-seasoned with Japanese 7 spice salt, this dish was packed with flavour with just the right amount of punch to it. The Crispy duck rolls are also worth mentioning. Although the name is a little deceiving as there is no crispy elements to the dish. The hoisin sauce paired perfectly with the tender (Char siu) duck slices and made a delicious roll with the cucumber. <br/><br/>Next we were served some of their larger plates. The Sichuan Kung Pao chicken was really tasty but we found ourselves searching for the chicken lost in the excessive amount of dried chilli and spring onion. The star dish for me was their Signature red curry. They are definitely on to something here!! Cooked to perfection with lots of flavour the duck worked perfectly with the pineapple, lychee and cherry tomatoes. The roti disappeared pretty quickly soaking up the delicious hearty sauce. The Vegetarian Pad Thai was also a hit and is everything youā€™d expect from a classic dish. The Kung Fu market fish has lots of potential but would be better served with the sauce served separate. I looked forward to the crispy batter on the snapper but it had become soggy due to the size and plating of the fish ā€“ in a pool of tamarind sauce. The taste was there, but would be even better with a crispy shell. The wok-fried beans were a nice side dish tossed with picked kale, garlic and Chinese sausage. <br/><br/>Despite being quite full, there is always room for dessert. Basi banana in Chinese toffee was the dessert for the evening and it sounded interesting! Unfortunately timing wasnā€™t on their side and we were left waiting for quite a while before it was served. When it finally arrived, the dish was very well portioned - small deep fried morsels piled high with strings of toffee and crunchy cornflakes. The deep fried banana wasnā€™t too sweet and the ice-cream balanced it well. Not a big fan of the matcha flavour in general so I personally would have preferred vanilla bean ice-cream ā€“ and more of it too. The single scoop serving disappeared still with half the dish left. <br/><br/>Black rice has great potential and has already got some stand out dishes. Being new to the food scene there are always a few tweaks to make but Iā€™m sure theyā€™ll get there! Itā€™s a great place for all occasions, especially a function or group dinner due to their a decent sized outdoor space and sharing menu. Thanks to Vicky from Zomato and the team at Black Rice for hosting such a good night!

Visited black rice for the first time and the ambience was great and the staff were friendly.<br/>In all<br/>Honesty I did think the food was quite expensive for what it is but that doesnā€™t mean the food was bad.<br/>The school prawns was nice to snack on and is a great dish to snack on while drinking. <br/>The whole fish(snapper) which had a lovely sauce would of been great with some rice and the sliced beef with the spicy sauce was fresh and clean. <br/>The duck curry was good but underwhelming and feel like I can get a better one somewhere else for cheaper. <br/><br/>

One of the better restaurants in the area. <br/><br/>Sitting between dozens of restaurants, this place stands out to move closer to Asian fusion and semi fine dining.<br/><br/>Oysters with chilli sauce was delicious. Curry Duck was amazing perfect without complaints. Best Pad Thai as well. The other dishes do not stand out and if you are a picky eater donā€™t have high expectations. <br/><br/>Great environment, friendly staff. Will be back when Iā€™m in the area for the above top 3 of my favourites here. <br/><br/>Service: 5/5<br/>Environment: 4/5<br/>Presentation: 4.5/5<br/>Food Quality: 4/5<br/>Food Quantity: 4/5<br/>Price per person: $40-$50

The best part of the food was the presentation. It was impeccable. Black Rice truly gives you a 'fusion' feel with authentic flavours from different parts of Asia. I have never used chopsticks before so naturally I failed miserably here and hence switched to forks. The dessert was surprisingly good because I did not know bananas could be so enticing. The vibe in the restaurant is very sophisticated and pleasant. The service is great too. For sheer quality of the food and likeable innovation, this place deserves a go.

On behalf of my boyfriend: <br/><br/>Of all the dishes we ordered tonight, the duck curry and oysters were the most memorable. <br/><br/>The duck curry was full of flavour, something and delicious new to try. <br/><br/>You can definitely tell a difference between the oysters here and oysters at other similar restaurants. The raw oysters with spicy sauce was one hunnit šŸ’ÆšŸ‘ŒšŸ’¦<br/><br/>The lychee mojito cocktail was amazingly refreshing, definitely worth a try. <br/><br/>The ā€œFlying Tigerā€ Angus steak was very tender and juicy šŸ˜«šŸ‘ŒšŸ’¦šŸ’¦ it is a perfect combination with the spicy sauce. <br/><br/>Last but not least, I must mention their pad Thai. It was probably one of the best pad thais Iā€™ve had in years. So good I didnā€™t even get a chance to take a photo since it was gone in seconds. <br/><br/>Will visit again very soon!

Came here for my birthday dinner. Staff were very welcoming and attentive. We ordered the vegetarian pad Thai, yellow duck curry, flying tiger and crispy pork belly with rice and steam fried greens. The food was amazing and full of flavour. The pad Thai was fantastic, I loved the tofu (update: went back and ordered a takeaway pad Thai, it was just as amazing.) The only downside was that the crispy pork belly was a bit too salty. Interior decor is modern and aesthetic.
