Review The Khan - Northcote

It's sooooo good There are many kinds of meat, and there are also various salads and hot foods. The staff are friendly too. A pancake look like turtle!! It's soooo cute. I had really nice dinner in The khan.

Great food and a variety of choices. Love the steamboat experience.

Visited again with my wife and kids and enjoyed thoroughly (again). Great food variety (especially for those who like experimenting with different meats, souses and sides), now they added an option of boiling not only frying. Also friendly switched on staff. No wonder they are getting busier. Love it. Will definitely come again.

Awesome concept. Everyone can just choose what they like, so even the most picky eaters can't complain. Seeing the food being cooked in front of us was awesome. Also, the customer service was great, the staff was very helpful and kind. Would definitely return.

I found it was really nice food and cooked on the spot. The staff are friendly and try to help as much as they can. I did find that they are very short on waiters as the plates piled on the table for a bit but they cleaned it up quickly. I would recommend this restaurant if you want a good amount of meat and sea food mixed with sides. Thank you guys for the experience.

BBQ better than their hotpot section. Really fresh ingredient! Made for meat lovers

It was a really good and unique food spot. So sad to see it had been closed down. It was a combo of Chinese hot pot, Mongolian barbeque and Korean barbeque. The food was always fresh and tasty. Really hope they manage to turn things around and re open, it is such a large venue to go to waste. It was one of my favourite dinner spots in Auckland. 😭😭😭

Very good dining experience with good variety of food. The fact that you can choose your own food and ingredients which they will cook in front of you on the grill is very special and interesting experience for everyone and specially for kids. Clean and tidy, very handy location close to Northcote exit of Nothern Motorway. Being right by the Northcote (Takapuna) Golf Club you can find plenty of free parking during the day and evening, so no problem with parking at all.

Had a family dining actually a few years ago. Mongolian bbq is exactly how I want my meal served, where I can choose any ingredients with any sort of combination of sauces. The meat quality is fairly good while the assortment of veges goes well with the meat. Entree and sweets are ok. I wished my meal was rare or medium cooked, but the chef wasn't 'obedient' to my request : usually overcooked. One thing, most of all I wasn't happy about is the selection of in-house music which is too old-fashioned and never the Kiwi favorites. Recommended to all nevertheless....

New Shabu Shabu section is great. What an amazing change! Can feel these guys are always trying hard to maintain the restaurant at a top level. (7 June) I love The Khan. Try lamb shoulder and pork belly!! It's amazing. Wow! Getting better and better. (13 Feb) I want to write how The Khan is getting better than before it was Gengy's Northcote.

its like a 'create your own meal' style buffet where you get your ingredients and they cook it for you. I personally enjoyed it very much and they even have dessert. i would come here again.

very disappoint ever!
The waitress is unprofessional, service is to slow, and the food choice is less.

There are two types of dinning, one is chief cooking for you,the other is you cook by yourself,
when we asked what is the difference, the waitress only answered just the cooking style is different, but she didn't point out that the dishes is very distinguish as well as the price. There are many kinds of food ranges including the soup, salad, sauce and dessert, if you choose chef cook for you. We don't know this, so we choose cook by ourselves, we found there is less meats and dishes to choose, and we don't even has the soy sauce at our dish table.
I asked waitress for soy sauce, waiting for like half hour and get nothing, finally I went to the bar to ask again and get the sauce by myself, very bad experience.

1. waitress is too unprofessional,. We don't mind to pay extra money by choosing the chef to cook for us, as long as there are more food choices. But the waitress didn't explain the price and dishes is different even we asked her already. She just said, the difference is in this table you must cook by yourself and in that table chef can cook for you.
2. very slow service, I cant find soy sauce in our table, there is soy sauce in chef-cook-for-you table, but I cant go to grab the one, as the chef over there didn't allow me to cross the line. So I asked waitress to get one for me, but get nothing.
3. I wanna make complaint, or at least give the advice to the manager to help them to improve the service, but all waiters is too much busy doing anything else, no one saw me waving hands.
3. above all, I don't even want to pay the money and lost emotion to eat. So I checked out and went home early.

I have been to many restaurant through these 6 years in NZ, it is the worse dinning experience ever.
There is no zero star I can choose, so I put one star, even the one star is too much more for this restaurant.

Thanks for a wonderful evening, the khan. This open kitchen grill experience never ceases to impress me. My partner and I ate to our fullest .. hence “an all you can eat buffet” The pancakes are still the same like i remembered from the Gengys days, soft and fluffy. Probably the best buffet on the shore.

Our family had totally poor experience in here for today. Nothing to eat We came to the restaurant at 7pm,Paid extra for the steam boat for my family as usually but they had only limited ingredients , so many ingredients has been discontinued (crabs, rice noodles , mussels etc which are the key ingredients for the steamboat were missing) we complained about this to the manager but he said its normally like this I asked him since when? He said it's been discontinued from 3weeks ago. Also their raw beef from grilled area is totally old and stings. The duty manager, Jonathan said it's because they soak it into wine...told to him you can go smell it because even my father he is a Chef and he also told me it is stings from its old meat quality, the manager said it shouldn't be because they got it in the morning.....he eventually took the meat to the kitchen. Also their hot food selection changed into bad quality for example their chashu steamed pork was totally dry, their korean spicy authentic fried chicken turned to chicken nuggets (frozen one u get from countdown) marinated with spicy sauce. Also their ceaser salad turned into just fresh salad you get from countdown, sliced garlic is dried out, pickled garlic is turning into blue/green colour. We were so disappointed of the quality of food and experience. It didn't seemed like there are any efforts from the food and changed into cheap budget for them. Was informed to the manager that we'll never come back here again he said ok and didn't really admit it was their problem. Manager seems very irresponsible and unprofessional of dealing with this.

Enjoyed my meal here, has a wide range of meats and veges. Was able to pick and choose what you want to be cooked by chefs. The pancakes and ice cream was also really good. Would definitely return. Atmosphere is nice and service is good. Only downside is having to wait for food to be cooked.

We have been to this restaurant on many previous occasions as this was one of our grand children's favourites. This visit we were told they could not take drink orders from our table without pre payment whilst they did exactly that for the table behind us. I could not have a glass of Pinot Gris as they only sold it by the bottle at $37. Previously they have given us oldies a discount with our gold card, but this was no longer accepted. As a table of seven we discussed this service and decided we will not go back.

Rarely do I rate well or write a review about a casual buffet restaurant. The Khan definitely gave me a lovely experience. The selection of meats and veggies that they have, combined with the classic of the Genghis Khan experience: the ability to compose your own recipe.
Of course not everyone will be satisfied all the time with how they cook or handle your food on the flat grill but it's more than good enough for me.
They also have the lovely and wide range of side dishes and salads. Their honey glazed kumara stole the show for me. I probably had more of that than the meat. Fried chicken was lovely, so were the spicy beans.
The highlight of any complete meal is however the dessert. They do the fluffiest and tastiest pancakes, and coming out from a bbq buffet? They put the biggest smile on my face. Cooked evenly, light and fluffy, very much the quality of pancakes I would usually pay good money for. And, you get to be an artist again with this one and decorate it. A few sauces and ice cream below par but seriously I would love to come next time just to have pancakes.

Located out north shore with heaps of free car park 2 mins away away from the restaurant (we've only been there for dinner so I'm not sure if you have to pay druing the day to park there)

Very clean place with such friendly staff. Customer service is always great here. One of our (Kai Mai) family go to places if we all want to dine with each other weither it's a birthday anniversary or farewell.

Just like Genghis Khan but better as you get a shabu shabu station all inclusive for $28.o5 per adult - $1 if you go on your birthday and have a 4 paying adults:)

You also can't go wrong with their fluffy pancakes and ice cream flavors.

The khan has been my go to place when I crave for some really good grill. The place has been revamped since its last owners and my oh my what a transformation it has undergone. Not only has the ambience become more lively but the food is top notch as well. The staff are friendlier and the choices are will just making you coming back for more. The lamb shoulder here is to die for and trust me if you’re a lamb lover you just can’t leave without trying it in their steamboat section.

Have been to this place on a couple of special occasions & the service has been good. The restaurant is well presented from when you enter. Dining tables are well spread out, lighting is good. Overall impression of the atmosphere is good. Service is great, staff always attentive to customers need. Bathrooms very clean. Only negative I found was there was a tend for staff to neglect refilling stock especially when it would get busy. If you have never experience The Khan BBQ then I would recommend you try it out. Parking can be an issue but there is a close by car park with a 2 min walk depending on how full it is at the time. Overall I get my fix of BBQ buffet & Steamboat for the price of 1 at this place. Would definitely recommend.

Updated 20/05/18 - Steamboat costs $5 per stove but still considered decent for both experiences. Value for money

This is my all time favourite Mongolian buffet. I come here super often and the quality has never decreased.

Service: 8/10
There isn’t much to judge since it’s mostly self serve. I asked for the hot pot and the waiter quickly brought me a stove. The people who cooked the food were also enthusiastic and everyone seemed very cheerful.

Food: 9/10
The BBQ has a a lot of different choices and a lot of different sauces for you to try out. The hotpot is also delicious as you can choose what you want. There aren’t a lot of hot foods and they were pretty average. The fruit seemed quite fresh and they often refilled them.

Ambiance: 8/10
There aren’t a lot of decorations but the buffet was organised into sections so you could easily find what you wanted.
It’s a little dark inside making the fires at the grill look more enticing.

I went on Saturday evening with two others.

Food: A great variety - veges, salad material, meat, seafood, chips, eggs, ice cream and pancakes. There are different kinds of marinated meat, they were tasty. I liked the kumara chips.

Ambience: Music is not very loud which I liked, as it is very unpleasant when one needs to shout over music. The place was relatively full though, so I did need to speak loudly sometimes. When walking in, watch for the how-to instructions painted on the walls on the corridor. Informative and cute.

Service: friendly staff. They took away our empty plates relatively quickly.

Tips:
1. Water is self-served - from the fridge located next to the bar.
2. When going for desserts, ask for the pancake first and get the icecream once the pancakes are done. My icecream melted while the pancake was being made.
3. Take a little at a time - less than what you'd normally take for one serving. That way you can try many different dishes and won't be creating food waste (when there are starving children everywhere... including here in NZ). Let's eat everything we bring on the plate.
4. Have fun watching the chefs at the hot grills. And remember where they put your food on the grill. As an aside, I heard that working at that grill is very hard work. I don't know if you can tip them separately? But it's worth a try, it looks really hot there...

All in all, I will definitely be dining here again.

One hulluva meal for $29! You can fill a bowl (or however many you can manage) with meat/veg/seafood and get it cooked for you, and they have a large selection of steam-boat hot-pot items, and even salads, as well as other ready-cooked food. I would suggest you go for unmarinated meat and veg for the grill, as I find the marinated sorts and sauces a bit on the salty side. I loved their pancakes and ice cream - they make the pancakes for you, on the spot! The food was better than I expected; I had low expectations because the Gengy's that was here previously was bloody awful. The meat and seafood were fresh, and the customer service was surprisingly pleasant. I'm not a huge fan of buffets, but I'd definitely go back and recommend this place to my family and friends.

Service was awesome bartender brought refills of water and brought our ordered drinks to our table , cleared our table when they saw we were mostly finished. Nice staff , good food and definitely a dinner place worth going too.

Dined here with my partner for dinner. Being a Sunday we thought it would be pretty quiet & we would just pop in. Turns out we were wrong, this restaurant is massive & it was full of large groups. We were lucky to even get a table. The selection of food here is good, there was two soups & a salad bar as well as a selection of warm sides, hot chips fried rice etc. Then there's the main selection of meat, veggies, oils & sauces to have cooked right in front of your eyes. I stared with a stirfry which was ok. I had beef which was quite chewy in parts, I'm not sure if it was the cut or the way it was cooked, apart from that it was flavoursome & enjoyable. I like that you select your own ingredients so you can have exactly what you want. Unfortunately because it was so busy there were quite long waits to have your food cooked by the chefs so I only had one of these dishes. I also had the pumpkin soup which was pleasant enough & some hot chips which were again edible but nothing to rave about. For me the highlight was dessert. It wasn't anything special just ice cream, pancakes & sauces but I am a real sweet tooth so it really hit the spot for me. The Khan do a $24.99 fixed price for all you can eat, so it's pretty good value for money but if it's busy it can be quite cramped & there can be long waits to have dishes cooked. The other thing I found odd is all drinks have to be pre paid, when it was as busy as it was tonight this just doesn't work. There was a queue half way across the restaurant to the bar. The service was pretty average, we weren't given water for the table for a good quarter of an hour & dirty dishes sat on the table for quite a while. I think the staff were however run off there feet, when they did attend to us they were friendly enough. I would recommend this place if you are a large eater.

My daughter and I used to love coming here when it was called Gengy's. It was always decently priced and food was delicious and the people were always friendly. Last night was something else. Every time we took something to be cooked it was either burnt or not even cooked at all. On our last visit my seafood and meat was under cooked. I thought this was a one off. The seafood was disgusting and rubbery and there was nothing available on the dessert table as there usual is. When I complained all I got offered was $1 off my meal. I am sorry but that does not entice me to back to a place that I once went to every week. This place has had a nice makeover and decor is so much better than before but the food has gone downhill. I hope it gets itself back to what it was before it became the Khan but I will not be returning when it does.
The previous name of this Restaurant would be "Gengy's". Dont know why its name has been changed.

All you can eat concept with Meat, chick , Seafoods , vegs, noodle. you select them and let the chefs cook for you. Variety of sauces you can choose. Deserts like Ice cream have been provided.

I love the unshelled prawn and fish. I can not find these things in Buffet restaurants nearby.

24.95$ all you can eat is an average price. not too bad to try.
