Review Powderkeg Restaurant - Ohakune

Eye filled steak to die for. Jimmy, the chef, gave me a steak that I haven't eaten anywhere for maybe two years. A true masterpiece of steak selection, preparation, and cooking. 10/10. My nate had Lamb Rump equally as good. Thank you 😊 Service via the bar, excellent, and the choices of beer and wine, great. Atmosphere, one of one in NZ Well done team. You excelled

Great place to grab a drink and unwind after a long day on the slopes skiing. The food options are pretty good and the selection of events and drinks available on a regular basis are pretty great. Kinda expensive for a bar but well worth it for the vibe, the atmosphere and the selection of drinks available. Highly recommend going if you have a group, or stay in their rooms if you can afford it. 10/10

My husband and I stopped at Powderkeg Restaurant and Bar for a lunch. We ordered Seasoned wedges with cheese, bacon, sour cream and chilli, and Teriyaki free range chicken, slaw and Japanese mayo burger. The food was so delicious. The flavours of the burger were different and amazing. Highly recommend.

Stopped by on the last weekend of the season and the bar was still quite busy, with no table available in the designated dining area. I ended up opting for buying at the bar and picking a place somewhere and even then the options were fairly limited. Food was alright. I had the fishcakes and the pork belly. Both were tasty in their own right. Just found that the fishcakes were a tad salty. I was expecting a bit more from the S'more dessert but it was just marshmallows melted over chocolate. Think I would have enjoyed it more if the cracker was harder since it was really soft and quite crumbly. The staff was really friendly and helpful. Even though they were busy they were able to serve desserts after the mains, although there was a bit of a wait. I would probably come back for the food but probably a different dessert.

Great place and even loved the vegan only desert options too. Priced well for a tourist hub. Fantastic location covered in wood and loads of character.

The best place in Ohakune to hang around for drink or dinner after a full day at the mountain. The atmosphere there is very cozy, warm and positive. Love the winter warm design of the whole place. The staff is super polite and helpful, always checking on your food and drink refills. Great selection of beers here, delicious. Even though the burgers here are not the best I ever had (and not a fan of square buns), they were still pretty darn good. Could have even gone for desert, but was too full from enormous amount of fries the bring with the burger. Definitely worth a visit. Will be back here for sure.

Just giving 4 stars because unfortunately they didn't have an item available! But apart from that, exceptional food for the price, and big servings. We ordered the pork ribs and the falafel burger. Lots of people so it's hard to find a table during busy hours. Would definitely go again!

While the chateau was worth the visit all by itself.. the restaurant was out of the world.. I would go back to Ohakune just for another steak... it was amazing..!!!!

This was our second time stay, both of 2 nights' duration. We love it. Great bedrooms, heated indoor pool. There are lots of adventure things to do with a local pick up drop off service. The breakfast are very very good with a huge tasty selection. The interior of the hotel is all exposed timber very incharnting. Always clean and friendly helpful service.

Hats down to the staff and mainly to the kitchen. Came here two days in a row around 6pm. Hectic busy! Despite the fact the staff warned us about 30mins wait for food, they brought it out within 25 mins. Thanks for that! Tried steak, lamb, burger (no pics, too hungry), nachos.. And more. We were table of almost 20 pax. Lamb is def winner! Everything well cooked. Burger was aldo great! Great vibe, hard-working nice staff! Your place to go if in the hood. Also good beer selection.

Cosy, excellent hospitality, would recommend the Marsmallow stout. This was the only restaurant that made a plan to accommodate people without bookings on a Sat evening. The ribs were fantastic. If you are hungry and ordering the Duckleg, suggest ordering a side portion of fries/mash. Sadly the lambshank was sold out. On a Sunday pm, only a limited barsnacks menu available.

Had dinner and drinks here on two consecutive nights. The service was excellent and the food was good, well prepared and presented. There is a limited menu and mainly caters for a fast food style but if you accept this, it's a great place to go. Selection of beers and wine is great and overall a fun place to be in. Highly recommended this a place to eat and drink.

Food was good. Reasonably priced. Good atmosphere. We went during the busy time 18.30-20.00. Floor staff did their best during that time. Order was done quickly and food came out quickly as well. Wasn't too happy with the bar, waited a long time, was clearly the only ones waiting for a period, then another patron came up to the bar and was served first. So gave up, but then the floor staff took our drink order, so all good . Would Def recommend and would return if back in the area.

We found them as they were one of the only places open tonight. They got us a seat right away and service was very prompt. Dinner came quickly and all of us were very satisfied with it. They checked on us several times to make sure everything was okay. We were in and out in a very comfortable 35 minutes! The atmosphere was great and everyone seemed happy, including the girl who served us. She seemed happy enough to joke with us and had great acrylic nails. Service was helpful and we were able to get a nice dish for my Mum who has very restrictive dietary options. It also seemed clean. My only concern was that the lady serving us said she would bring ‘a large jug of water’ and brought… a medium sized milk bottle jug? It wasn’t large 😅 The building and area are lovely and it’s great that they could cater to dietary restrictions. There are plenty of parking spaces. However, it is hard to find the restaurant or know if it is open in the massive building - but just ask reception. It also doesn’t look like it would be accessible to someone in a wheelchair or with mobility issues, FYI.

Good place inviting staff really friendly. Need some touch up between ordering and waiting we run out of drinks while waiting. But foods good not long wait would like more dessert options. Would recommending for a good meal for your buck. Thanks guys

Just spent a wonderful weekend at the amazing Powderhorn Chateau in Ohakune. Their upstairs restaurant has a new menu which is incredible and a must do if you're in the area. The Powderhorn is a huge log chalet which looks like it was teleported over from Switzerland. The owners, Ben and Antika, are super nice as are their staff on the reception desk, downstaits Powderkeg bar and restaurant and upstairs Matterhorn restaurant. I totally recommend the Powderhorn Chateau as the perfect getaway.

Excellent place for a family birthday celebration. Staff were brilliant, good food, highly recommend.

Great place. Friendly staff, although there was one French? Waitress who had trouble understanding us and the people around us. She was very sweet but really not cut out for that position. Our meals were very nice but the sticky date pudding was a let down as it was on the dry side with not enough sauce. Would go again👍

4 adults and 2 infants You seated us, took our dinner order, then ignored us for over an hour til we asked. We got a story about running out of pizza bases, but the group who followed us in and ordered later got 3 pizzas within 20 minutes. We only wanted 1, along with 3 other mains and fries for the kids. I think you just overlooked us. The pizza story didn't quite ring true. Unimpressed.
