Review Almaz Cafe - Onehunga

Always like the food at Almaz Cafe. The kebabs are okay but the persian menu specials are quite good. Tried the lamb pasendeh which was amazing.

Fantastic cafe. Very nice atmosphere and it is also open in the evenings for a wonderful meal. Food is amazing.

Wonderful place with a great host. The mixed kebab and lamb souvlaki were fantastic and the chips were some of the nicest we have had.
Alexander
Friendly owner, happy to answer my poorly worded questions and made me a very tasty falafel kebab

The ambience and food are very good. The owner is a very humble and pleasant person. One the most genuine kebabs you can get in Auckland.

We love to get take aways here. Great kebabs and iced coffee. Place is always clean. Staff friendly and helpful with choices.

Great place for a lunch time snack and bringing the friends down for group meet ups. Definitely would recommend. Also has a coffee menu too

Great service and would recommend food from here as a local

My absolute favourite Turkish restaurant. Been a regular for many many years. I always get the chicken on rice and it is by far the best food. Always consistently yummy. Great friendly service. Wish they were a franchise all over Auckland as I don't get to Onehunga as often as I would like. Definitely recommend ๐Ÿ˜Š

The owner is super friendly. Gave us the option to make it spicy if we wanted. However it wasn't that spicy though. Prices are alright I guess

I love the spanakopita here, it's a very generous serve with salads and hummus. My husband enjoys the chicken and rice and the kebabs are very good too. Lovely staff. ๐Ÿ˜Š
I had lunch here. Got a lamb works combo. A bit on the pricey side but taste good. Didn't ask me what sauces I wanted and was surprised when the food arrived. Still tasted good but just wish I got asked. :-) fries on the small side but we'll cooked so I'm okish with that. Service was pleasant though.

Not used to eating from wrapped foil but the overall the food was tasty. I ordered lamb kebab that night and they were nice and patience waiting for me to complete my meal before closing for the night. They almost forgot my order but it was all well. The staff was very friendly and I enjoyed talking to them.

I like the food they serve here.
Dining space is nice. Food is reasonably priced with good portion sizes.

I would definitely recommend the Moussaka if you have to choose one thing from the menu. It's absolutely delicious.

The owners are lovely and tentative.

Im not one to leaveย negative feed back but im really dissapointed , been coming here for years and the serving amount has been getting smaller and smaller with increasing prices , i got charged $37 dollars for 2 lamb on rice combos , there was hardly any rice with an overload of sauce to make it look bigger and the fries portions with the combos were like 2 portions split into one. very dissapointed.

Quaint little place serving delicious turkish food. The waitress at the counter was not too friendly but that did not stop me from enjoying my meal of moussaka. Very few places around the area and this is a very good choice for a quick dinner

Great place for kebabs etc. Real meat, not that horrible minced up meat they slice off at kebab shops in malls ๐Ÿ˜ place is always clean and tidy, staff friendly and quick. Can eat in and byo. Good size portions. Have been here many times and is consistent all round. Maybe more variety on menu would be good

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: I've been here many times over the years and it hasn't changed in appearance! Decor is simple and I really like the folding windows at the front of the restaurant, an ideal spot to sit in the warmer months.

FOOD: A decent range of Turkish food options on offer. I decided to go with the chicken kebab on rice and enjoyed the flavours and creamy hummus. The menu was full of flavour and the rice nicely cooked. Also had a side of fries which were crunchy and topped with a lovely seasoning.

SERVICE: friendly and managed to serve our food in quick time.

Probably the only thing that put me off was when a customer asked at the counter if they made coffee. The waiter said they did, but he was too busy to make it (I think he was the only staff on at the store at that time!). This could have been handled better.

Apart from that, a cheap tasty option in suburban Onehunga.

Went here for dinner with my husband. We both ordered kebabs. The food was delicious! New favourite Turkish place. Will definitely be back. :)

Had the chicken souvlaki and pita bread with hummus. Kabab lacked chicken, and didn't have a lot of spice in the chilli. Pita bread was fairly good, hummus had good flavour. Friendly staff, clean looking venue.

Almaz Cafe is the best Turkish restaurant I have ever been to i go there every Saturday and Sunday I like the chicken on rice and the beef burger mostly 11/10
I have been eating at Almaz for just over 10 years now so fair to say iv'e tried the whole menu! Even after new ownership in the last 2-3 years the food and coffee have remained great if not better! This is a fab cheap eat, the Istanbul Chicken is an authentic dish not like a western curry so its nice and light. The Lamb kebabs are good value (they use Lamb Shoulder not mince). My favorite is a Chicken Kebab finished with the Baklava of course. For celebrations/catchups I make use of the BYO. The owner is lovely and extremely hardworking, ask him about authentic food methods and you'll realise how much time he spends preparing. Enjoy.

I love this restaurant so much!!!! Every dish is delicious but serving sizes could be a bit more bigger. I get The baklava dessert on a daily basis and it is so devine! Not soggy, has a crunchy pastry and super yummy cashew filling :) yum yum yum!

one of my old fave places :) always without doubt have the spanakopita with salad..on the odd occasion has tasted a bit dry but overall, very friendly staff and that dish is an old favourite

Went there for dinner when they had 2 staff on instead of 3. This was there reasoning for the slow service even thou there was hardly any customers there. They cook the takeaway orders first so if you're eating in, you are a second class customer. I ordered the Istanbul chicken dish which was just a small bowl of stewed onions with bits of chicken in a watery gravy. I heard how they cooked it with the magical beep beep sound of the microwave. The rice that came with it was seriously overcooked nearing to the stage of congee. I also had a lamb samosa on the side which turned out to be a vegetarian samosa that had kebab lamb shavings placed on top. The samosa was microwaved as it was not crispy and the pastry was soggy. Wife ordered the lamb eggplant dish which was also a small bowl of stewed onions, eggplant and bits of lamb in a watery gravy. Came with the same rubbish overcooked rice. Everything we had was precooked and microwave reheated. If this is real Turkish food, then I think I'll never visit Turkey ever. This is a sad excuse for an eatery. Run by amatuers that are more concerned in making money than cooking nice food.

Went there today...we ordered 2 kebab combo's and 1 burger combo with 2 flat whites. We were very happy with the service and food. The flat white's were very good too. It was quiet, so I guess we were lucky. We enjoyed the food so then decided to sample a few of the sweet treats on offer. Overall, this place is great value, far better than the other fast food that is available for the same price. Fresh & tasty. Will probably go again!

Came here on a Sunday night after a game.... Had Baklava with ice cream and hot chocolate. Fantastic... It has a really nice feel here too.

Over several dining experiences here, we've observed the following:

Coffee is consistently good. Sometimes a little cold, but always nicely made. They stopped serving decaf which is a shame.

Food is okay though not consistent. Sometimes the meat dished are tender, sometimes overcooked. Taste is usualy very good. The Almaz Platter is average at best.

Good value, with most meals pitchd for around $10 and delivering satisfaction.

Service is okay. More victims of the GFC I suspect, as they are frequently multi-tasking and occasionally muck-up an order. I'll forgive them quickly though as times are tough and they're toughing it out.

Over good food, I have eaten there several times and the owners are always friendly (even when you have had a few). Lamb on rice very good, have enjoyed all the dishes I have tried.

There is such a diverse range of Turkish food and is an open friendly restaurant. I've been there many times over the past 6 years and can say their food has always been consistent and budget friendly. The owner is a lovely man and his food shows his attitude towards customers. If you're in the area and keen to grab lunch you could always go to subway or spend a couple more dollars and get a spinacotta ???????? will add photos soon x

This is going to be a really biased review.

I've been to this restaurant a lot of times in the past, so much that we became very friendly with the owner to the point he recognized us around Onehunga (Countdown/fruit shops).

The food is good - and I did love this place as it was somewhat the only place that sold Turkish food after 5pm (the only other one I'm aware of is in Dressmart.... ew.) The eat-in portion sizes are somewhat a joke compared to their takeaway size so if you eat here, get it takeaway as they'll give you a little bit more. There's a huge variety to choose from and it's budget friendly.

And due to a very very very bad experience (maybe 2~4 years ago) my sister and I will NEVER EVER return to this restaurant. Due to personal reasons, I won't be giving an explanation about that experience - I will just recommend to get any meal from here takeaway.
