Review Black Pepper Indian Restaurant - Onehunga

Michael Davidson
We came here for dinner recently and were thoroughly impressed. The small restaurant was very cozy and the staff very friendly. We had a hard time deciding so ended up sharing two meals. Though the portions did not look very large they were very filling and tasted great. Between two of us we still had enough left over for lunch the next day. The naan bread was probably the best I've had in a long time - cooked to perfection and both crispy and soft as well as full of flavour. The best part was that the prices were reasonable and probably considered cheap. I would definitely recommend this place and will certainly be returning!

We ordered 4 meals, and share to each other, a little bit spicy, but very delicious.

Delicious, Lamb Saagwala was really tasty, enjoyed the rest of our meal, friendly service. Can't fault, perhaps, music in the dining area would nice, otherwise fabulous. Thank you for a lovely meal! 🙂

As an 100% Indian I mostaly recommend this restaurant.the environment is like I am in an authentic Indian restaurant in India.I don't have pictures of the food but I highly recommend.chefs special chiken. And the food is like they brought it straight from India but the waiting is a little long

This takeaway and dine-in restaurant is a must visit place in Onehunga. They are open lunch time 11:30am -2:30pm and Dinner 5pm-10pm. They have wide array of selections from desserts to Main Course, as well as drinks. We ordered Chicken Biryani and Buttered Chicken with Nan and samosas. It was lovely and worth the price we paid. The guy that serves us, I think his name is Mico, is really really reliable and nice. He has a great smile on his face from the moment we entered up till the end. Will definitely go back and try some other dishes.

Beautiful Meal!!! My family and I enjoyed a delicious meal here at Black Pepper. We had a range of dishes including butter chicken, Korma and Palak Paneer, along with all the usual side dishes. The food was great, as were the lovely staff. Service was prompt. Great overall experience - we will be back!

Best food ever, me and my family went here for dinner. It was the best choice we have made. We are definitely going to be their regulars. I highly recommend you to come here and eat.

Let me specify - Food is outstanding but not the service. Me and my wife bought a coupon from Grab 1 . we went on for dinner on Monday which is always less crowded and they do have specials anyway on mon. we ended up ordering extra naan with BYO . we had such great time enjoying the food we eventually were so full we couldn't finish the Tikka masala. i am the last person you can imagine wasting food and i thought i might as well take the leftover home. it was almost a full bowl of chicken tikka left . i asked the gal and she said the most outrageous thing. " Sorry we dont do takeaways with coupon, we have to throw it in the bin ". seriously ???? why waste food , we paid we loved and we upgraded amd thisbis what u say ?? i dint like the fast that staff being so shrude and unconsiderate to diffrentiate the client who came for dinner is not living on for takeaway . i just dont like food being wasted. that could have served 1 meal for a homeless. tbh i loved food but not the ideology being the weirdo deal and conditions. never coming back again or recommending you guys . sorry but please learn to respect food, its a gift which doesn't come easy for 60% of the world. Had a great night out for dinner via grab one deal to try it out.. It says no doggy bags on the voucher which I presume is to stop the meal turning into a takeaways. We bought additional entrees and corkage on a byo wine, then at the end one of our meals had probably 2 thirds left.. We asked for takeaway and was told that grabone forbid it. This is pure insanity. The leftovers were going straight into the bin at restaurant. In an age where food wastage and issues with homeless and needy people in our own backyard. Eventually after arguing for about 20 minutes they 'gave in' and offered if we paid the extra to make it a full price meal we could take it. If this is a grabone rule then I'd suggest looking around at which deal sites you use in future.

I'm not even a big Indian food fan but wow one of best meals I've ever had. I've ordered a few times now, tried a few dishes, all amazing.

Good food quick service highly recommend to try Indian delicacies.
Kylie Metzener
We ordered delivery, they said it would take 50 minutes to deliver, which is an extremely long wait time, it then took 1 hour and 20 minutes with no reason why. The food turned up and it was cold and bland. Not a great experience.
Emily Thyberg
Good food, service and great price! In fact, I was pleasantly surprised with how affordable it is! We will be back!
Richard Elliott
Heard good things so ordered a delivery takeaway via Menulog and was not disappointed. Very generous portions and really tasty, authentic flavoured food, with nice level of spice. Naan bread was the best we've had in NZ. We had the mixed veg pakora, chicken biryani and palak paneer. All highly recommended. It also arrived 5 minutes earlier than expected!

Food was delicious I enjoyed Kashmiri pulao rice and staff was very friendly. We will be back again .....

Our family's favourite takeaway in Onehunga. Kids love the mild Butter Chicken with Butter Naan.
Frances Fergusson
We have been here quite a few times..and this is not the first time we have squashed 15 of us in there..but we sort of give them notice now before we do that..easy parking..delicious food and great service.
Huzefa Fakhri
Great food, it's our go to place for curry. Consistently great!
Esther
Amazing food, amazing service, staff are so friendly! Food was delicious, my stomach hurt from eating so much. Go support local people!
Angela
Love the butter chicken! I just got it for dinner tonight and it was delicious. The curry was cooked to perfection. This place is so under rated and it’s definitely a place you should try. Their takeaway is also very good and fast. Rate it

Dined at this restaurant twice as the food was delicious. But its a very bad option for gold zomato people as the staff here give various and random reasons as to not accept the zomato gold. First time, the lady staff declined saying the time is up and she did not accept the zomato, the second time we ordered a mutter mushroom gravy, chilli naan and mixed veg. She clearly mentioned the mixed veg was dry when I asked her whether it was dry or gravy. Well, the mixed veg turned out to be gravy. She gave us the reason saying "it is dry as compared to other gravies". We didn't say anything and we asked for a takeaway box for the mixed veg. She declined for that also. So literally we paid the full bill both the times.

I would definitely recommend people to visit this place for the yummy authentic indian food. Excluding the staff here, the place is really good.
Thushi Jayawardena-Willis
We like their vegetarian dishes: harabarachaman, mushrooms and dhal with naan bread. Tasty food at a reasonable price.
Shaizad Pawaskar
Being there dinner for three, did order basic item from menu Madras chicken and butter chicken with garlic naan.
First bit of naan felt like sugar bread and gravy was tasteless and sweet & chicken was same in both gravy (boiled chicken).
We loss our appetite. Not sure which taste bud guest they are attracting but indian restaurant should taste like Indian.

Yummy food. Very small place, only a few tables. I think they mostly get take-away orders.

The good: Quick service/turn around. Though they were very quiet, only one other table that left basically when we arrived. We started with 2 samosa's that were huge, excellent value for money, then I had the chicken korma and my partner had the a vegetarian dish. Both were yummy, glad we only ordered 1 naan as it was huge and plenty for the both of us.

The bad: Nothing really to complain about. They had sold out of the chicken and vege samosa's so I had to settle with lamb, but I guess they are just that good they everyone wants them.
Samuel Mei
Best Indian restaurant I have been to in the past few years. It's a small place that gives you a cozy feeling. Service was wonderful. The curries were absolutely amazing. Seasoned very well and the flavors just popped. Definitely going back.

Decided to give this place a try since I love eating Indian cuisine. We ordered the Lamb saagwala and the lamb korma plus a couple of butter naan.
The saagwala was riched in spinach taste and was made very well. The lamb korma was savoury and sweet, which wasn't too bad either.

Overall the experience was not too bad. The only thing I did not like was that the place did not have an accessible bathroom for customers dining in. Which I highly recommend that they should hand out some wet napkins for people who is dining in.
That would at least allow people to have better food hygiene.

Taste - 4/5
Service - 3/5
Ambience - 2/5
MG Corcuera
Used Zomato Gold during our visit :-)
Ambience was pretty standard, nothing too special.

Would highly recommend the garlic and cheese naans! Cooked fresh and tasted it. We got the lamb biryani and would rate it 3/5. Not the best, but still is pretty tasty.
Would rate the butter chicken 2.5/5.
It was too sweet and bland. Over all an okay visit and was a nice chill restaurant to go to for Indian cravings if you are ever around the area :-)
Bryce
Lovely place. Waiter was friendly and food was delicious. I really enjoyed the butter chicken and chili chicken from this place, was really full after the meal and will definitely be back in the future.

Bobby Anderson
We dined in here and received awesome food with great service. Tried the lollipop chicken which had a sweet and sour flavour. And two types of curries with naan bread. The curries were lamb sagwala and chicken masala, both very tasty.

Got takeaways from here for the first time two days ago and all three of us ended up with upset tummies! Based on what we ate we narrowed this down to the sauce used for butter chicken and butter prawns (the lamb curry was ok and pretty tasty)... shame really as it all tasted very nice and the naan was freshly made and yummy, however cannot give more than this rating as not sure what exactly went into their sauce.
Mel Cole
Ordered takeaway Mango Chicken and Black Pepper Chicken with a butter naan - super delicious! The chicken was so tender. Highly recommend this place as a local. I want to go back and try a lot of other dishes.
Peter Clark
Called in to get takeaways for dinner. We were going to get a couple of mains some rice and some naan. At this stage the lady serving us showed us that there was a special for Mon Tue and Wed nights saving us some money. Was grateful otherwise would have cost us more. We then got a couple more dishes as well. As for the food was some of the best Indian cuisine I have had. Will definitely be returning.

Black Pepper is a rather small Indian restaurant with only 5 small tables. On a Tuesday, we seemed to be the only customers there for lunch. We had butter chicken, lamb rogan josh with butter naan. Both the chicken & lamb were very tender & tasted beautiful. Pappadom was complimentary. A special credit went to the mango lassi - the added bits of cashew nuts in it enriched the drink.
(Food - 4/5; Service - 4/5; Ambience - 3/5)
Visited on 22 May 2018

Great value for money. Dishes were delightful and full of flavour. Would of given a 5 but they don't serve cocktails as per what Zomato says.
Irada Salam
Best Indian restaurant in my area. Price is definitely worth the portion. Food is tasty and although the service may be slow ( waiting time for food) it is worth the wait.

Small and cosy, good place to stop by on a rainy night!
Steph Coulton
We went for a casual family curry at black pepper and I found the food to be very authentic. In future I’d see this as more of a takeaway place, but there are around 12-16 seats in the restaurant.
SJ
Recently moved into the area and have been trying to find new spots to try.
Felt like Indian food so decided to try Black Pepper. We ordered x2 butter chickens, garlic naan, cheese and garlic naan.
The cheese and garlic naan was good - good amount of cheese as many other places are abit stingy. The garlic naan was also tasty.
The butter chicken was ok - the meal came was very watery. There appeared to be an excess of liquid which we had to tip out. For this reason - won’t be returning. 😞

Our go to India takeaway. Great service. They forgot an item of our order, but brought it around before I got to the car. Samosas are battle worthy. The wife usually wins and eats the winnings...
Carolina Sola
The best cheese naan bread!!!! great service and very nice food. Paneer meti masala so yummy... we will go back soon...Don't forget, best cheese naan bread...
Libby Jane
The food is really good and pretty well priced too, we usually just get take away as it's quite a small restaurant but it's so handy and quick :)
Yenzi
Love their food. :)Curry flavour is really good and the Roti is good-size and always freshly made. Little cozy place for meal. Our favorite indian restaurant at Onehunga.
Claire & Dan
We ordered the vegetarian platter for an entree, which was essentially deep fried foods with chutney and a little bit of slaw. It came out on a hot plate, the combination of slaw, chutney and samosa was yummy. Would have been nice if there was something not deep fried on there aside from the slaw. The butter paneer I had was really yummy, the cheesy garlic naan was amazing - probably the best we've ever had. The butter chicken was yum. The environment was small, cosy and intimate. The staff were very friendly. Will definitely be back.

We bought a Grab One voucher for $29 for two that included 2 mains and one platter. Paid additional $9 as we had a BYO wine and naan bread. The staff was behaving quite oddly since the beginning as if we came there for free food whereas they were really nice to other customers who weren't on Grab One. We somehow didn't pay much attention to their weird customer service and continued eating. We could't finish a one full chicken curry bowl and rice as we were genuinely quite full especially because the non-veg platter had a lot of fried food in it that filled us up quickly. We knew that take away of left over food wasn't allowed as per the conditions of the Grab one offer so we called the staff and said that is there a way that she could allow us to take this for a charge. At first she refused then said "if you are really keen you can pay $8 and take it away". We were surprised as the take-away charge at any other Indian restaurant is normally $1 or $2. We said but that's too much price for left over food but she refused to budge. I then asked her what will she do with this food, she said "we will just throw this in the bin". At this point my husband and I again requested that if shes doesn't want us to take it, this food can be given to someone in need but she bluntly refused. I am really surprised at this poor staff attitude. Sorry but we aren't going there again, never ever again!

Great little Indian place. The service was great and the atmosphere was lovely. The food was awesome although a little bit pricey. Will probably return.

Sometimes ating out for vegans can be a challenge, but recently The Black Pepper made it easy for us. When we enquired about a group booking (13) with an all-vegan, low-gluten set menu the staff were really willing to work with us to sort out a menu and were happy to adapt dishes for us (including the option of dairy-free naan bread- who knew they usually have cream in the bread mix!). The result was a lovely hassle-free evening out for our group. The food was tasty, steaming hot (appreciated on a cold winter night) and plentiful, the service was prompt and unobtrusive, and the price was very reasonable. A big thank you to The Black Pepper team in Onehunga.

One of my favourites in Onehunga. The guys that operate this little gem are really friendly and always remember you. The food is really tasty. The Naan is some of the best I've ever eaten. The butter chicken, Lamb butter masala & the lamb rogan josh are all excellent choices.
Bcakl
Black Pepper is so good, we get takeaway and they deliver on time and its hot and delicious. Lamb masala was beautiful last time. Would recommend its food, haven't been to the restaurant yet.

We took a punt on Saturday night and tried Black Pepper. It had great reviews, so why not. And what a find it was!! Awesome food. Truly awesome. Some of the best Indian we have had in NZ. Don't expect much if you dine in. It is simple, but clean and the service was amazing. No toilet (good to note). But what an experience. We really loved it. Thanks Black Pepper. We now have a new favourite place to eat.
Caramacnz80
A cosy spot with easy parking. Excellent service, Incredible food. We go there at least once a fortnight Mon-Weds when they have their $10 main specials. It makes dining so affordable. Definitely a regular eating spot for us.

A slightly underwhelming experience based on the reviews I've read for this place.

A small cosy venue with good service & above average food. My friend and I came to dine in on a Wednesday night and luckily managed to get the last table available. Their special $28 doesn't apply to dine in customers, however they charge $10 for mains (which includes rice) and if you buy a $4 naan, it's essentially the same deal. [applies Monday - Wednesday]

My friend opted for a mild chicken saagwala, whilst I got my usual choice of hot chicken tikka masala. We also got 2 garlic naan's which were pre cut for us.

I definitely agree with others in the reviews about the curry being less/not oily at all! The taste is somewhat different to what I'm use to..... not as 'creamy' as most places make tikka masala, and I personally feel that their hot isn't very hot. If you're a fan of spicy food, I would rate this more of a mild-medium spice. The size looks small in the bowl, but added with the rice (and maybe a naan for bigger appetites) it's extremely filling.

Cannot comment on the saagwala as I didn't try it.

The garlic naan isn't overly garlicky or oily like some naan's I've had in the past. 8/10 would recommend a naan! The rice is nice and fluffy! More than enough for 2 people.

There was decent traffic of takeaway orders which suggests this place does do pretty good curry, and I'll definitely visit again to try their other curries and see if I can find a favourite.
Joanne Chiang
Came here on a wed and they do $10 curry on wed. They were very busy with take away orders. We got the chicken tikka masala and the black pepper chicken. Both were yummy and we also got a naan to go with it. The whole meal was $23 dollars and we were so satisfied and full!
Michael Wells
Quite like these guys, they are consistently good, rich sauces, and they deliver quickly. Overall I'd rate them as a good 4.0 Indian restaurant, but their garlic cheese naan is phenomenal. Huge and delish- the best I've had. It easily earned them an extra half point.
Tanzeem Jan
Great food! Less dine in waiting time. Online order is always on time. Highly recommend trying their chicken Biryani. Its the best I have tried compared to other restaurants. Full of flavours and balanced amount of meat and rice in their biryani.
Nicky
Went for dinner tonight with my husband. Cheese naan was delicious and same with the palak paneer. Friendly staff. Clean tidy restaurant. They also do takeaways and delivery. Look forward to trying more curries next time:)
Vanessa.riechelmann
This will definitely be our new local favourite. The amazing aromas when I walked in were a good sign and flavours did not disappoint. A great depth of flavour and balanced spice. The lamb samosa are undoubtedly the best I've ever had. Highly highly recommend. If you love an authentic curry this place is awesome!
Harrass
It is cosy, seems very clean and tidy, clean cuttlery, cups, seats, tables etc, friendly staff. They play 90's or early 00's pop music which is kinda funny. I have only had the curries, but to me the food here seems a bit different to the generic curries found elsewhere. The curries seem less oily, and have a more developed strong spice flavour. Generous portions of tender meat. The vege curries also have good flavour, but the veges themselves seem a bit basic, be nice to see some big chunks of egg plant and capsicum. Naan always good, not too bready, nice fluffy rice. Cheap mains on Mon - Wed I think. We go regularly, and havn't been dissappointed. Worth checking out, especially if you're local.
B. McDonald
It's for sure a really cheap option however the food was pretty bad I ordered a butter chicken and chicken korma and I couldn't eat, the butter chicken was really strong and it just didn't test like butter chicken, definitely the worse curry I have had. The staff is friendly
Mikos
Been going to this little gem since it first opened and it very rarely disappoints. The hot vindaloo is my go to but that said I have devoured quite a few of their other offerings and all have been solid dishes. It is really the price that distinguishes it for me, it would be a difficult challenge to find another Indian restaurant of this quality charging so little. Highly recommended. Only small comment is that there is no customer bathroom but this is understandable given the modest footprint of this eatery.
Sarah Brown
Amazing!! Our local curry restaurant and takeaway now!! Have had it many times never been disappointed!! The restaurant is small but very clean and tidy, they also now have BYO beer and wine always a bonus!
Brian
Very nice Chicken Masala and Chicken Kadai. Would highly recommend Black Pepper over any other Indian resteraunts in Onehunga. Very good service and delivery.
Leila Rashidi
Go there with colleagues every Wednesday. Delicious food. Friendly staff. Good value for money. We really love the clean and tidy environment of the place.
Kerensa Robertson
The best restaurant in Onehunga- by far. In fact, the best Indian Takeaway I have ever had. Everything is consistently delicious and their medium has a proper flavor to it.
Allan Laycock
Went here the week they opened and been going back ever since. Good food, good price. The owner cooks your food and cares about what he is serving you, one can't ask for anything better than this.
Eli
Food is amazing. yummy, tasty. One of the best indian restaurants in Auckland. Lovely staff . Cheap, affordable. I went there for a staff dinner and had to go back the next day to get some more food for my family.
Elizabeth Andrew
Black Pepper was an accidental find for us one evening and has continued to be one of our favourite go-to's when we want something special. The food is always delicious, the naan especially so. Sometimes we takeaway to enjoy but when we eat in the service is always courteous. Would highly recommend.
Judith Ann Duncan
This is now our favourite local. Beautiful food, personal service and very reasonable. It is also very clean and they heat the plates, which is something I'm big on. Not a criticism, but it would be nice to take a bottle of wine to have with dinner,
Clint Baker
We two had a vegetarian biryani and a chicken marsala, multiple cold drinks including a manga lassi. The bill totaled $41.
The food was beautifully presented and amongst the best tasting I have had anywhere. The service was polite, friendly and responsive.

Please do not judge these premises from the outside where you may think this is just another Indian takeaway; this is a real restaurant specialising in Indian cuisine and doing it extremely well.
I, for one, will be back
Amy Spokescat
Delicious food, kind server. It took some time to prepare the food but we were in no rush and you could tell it was made fresh. High quality.
FJ
Tried this place for a Takeaway based on previous reviews and it's very nearby. They have a great takeaway deal for $28 which is 2 mains, 2 rice and 2 naan. Excellent value. We tried the Korma and Rogan Josh. Both really tasty and meat was really tender. The place is small for sit down but immaculate. Will definitely be going back.
Avishta Belas
Usually I'm not a fan of Indian food but this place nailed it! The chicken was perfectly cooked and the sauces were great! The service was also amazing and we were impressed enough to come back within the week
Trish
Good food as usual, we got take out. However when I rang to place my order I was given some education of the difference between tikka and tandoori because I made a mistake and ordered the wrong thing - BIG mistake!! He was quiet rude, then I ordered something they were no longer offering but it was still on their site. When my husband went to get it, the man went on about it again!!! Let it go. Loved the dishes but will reconsider whether to go back.

Back again on the 14th March, food was awesome and service has seriously improved. Thanks Black Pepper😊😊😊
Dee
I have one word to describe my first experience dining at Black Pepper....B E A U T I F U L
The owner is very nice and making sure we're all good etc., service was great, food was amazing, portion was great, the sauce and rice were soooo fluffy and light! Chicken and lamb so tender and moist just melt! The fish curry was delicious too. Don't forget to try their garlic cheese naan! Simply the best! Yummm... Will definitely be back. The best Indian food I have ever had by far.
Kevin Kantono
TLDR: Food is flavourful, fair portion with the price, and impressive cutlery setting.

Ordered chicken saagwala (curry with spinach) comes with rice. Very delightful experience with food. Plate is heated properly so that rice and curry on plate wouldn't cool as fast (which is pretty impressive). Waiting time is a bit too long though. But it's fine was worth waiting with the food and the experience as well.
Yusoff Kamal
Now I can say that all the posted comment before me that rated this place a 5...because it is a 5!! The food are just amazing and the serving portion is generous... as for the price: Reasonable!
I never taught that such a small take-away/dine-in place can accommodate my group of 5.
I highly recommend this place to Indian fool lovers...trust me you won't regret it. And do call in for table reservation if u have more than 4 people to dine in. ...Enjoy😊

Deborah Leilua
Came across this gem by accident and it immediately blew me away-seriously the best curry in town (and I am a bit of an Indian food connoisseur). The owner is incredibly friendly so expect quality service at a decent price. They make a special dish for me everytime I go and make an effort to know their local customers. Curries and fresh, flavorsome and perfect consistency, Garlic and cheese Naan is to die for. Portion size generous and always have leftovers. You are not living if you have not tried Black Pepper!
Patriz De Leon
Great food, value for money!

We ordered Lamb Saagwala, Chicken Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken and everything was delicious! The servings were huge, perfect for sharing. This is now our favorite Indian place. We will definitely be back! :)

On our way to a different restaurant, we passed by Black Pepper Indian Cuisine and after seeing their sign 50% off mains Monday,Tuesday promotion- we decided to go there instead. I'm glad we decided to go here because I found a real hidden gem I otherwise would never have been to.

My partner and I regurarly have Indian Food for our treat nights and this was hands down the best butterchicken and chicken korma we've had! They had a large selection of Naan breads including Chilli Garlic Naan (which was quite the tasty treat).

While waiting for our food we received a complimentary puppadom. We also noticed a lady who came in to pick up takeaways receive one while she waited :)

Every single curry is cooked fresh individually and could be customised to either mild, medium or hot, therefore catering to every single person out there.

We will definitely be coming back here. =)
Thank you for the great food!@
Manoj Khurana
Good food , awesome taste..good job black pepper.
They have started 50 % off all mains with rice (mon & tue) dine in. Me and my wife tried yesterday its really awesome and much cheaper then others... Good authentic food😀
Surely visit again cheers !

Love the food. Customer service is excellent. Great value for money. I have been going to Black Pepper from the first day it opened. Best Indian Cuisine in Onehunga.
Mat Randomplay
Good home style Indian food. A little oily, but very tasty and great value. Liked the bhaji and the biryani most, khadai chicken was decent and lamb madras tender. Large naan, fluffy rice and the homemade sauces were a nice touch. Will definitely be back!
Harry Thomson
A delicious, well priced meal in a friendly environment. Dinner was served promptly and plentifully, and afterwards the owner came out and chatted to us which felt very genuine. Would recommend to all.
Blake
Phone ordered 3 curries and naan, very good. 20 minute wait, friendly staff, good price.

Would prefer online ordering and delivery options, also an updated Zomato menu (prices are incorrect).
Joan Ashworth
Five satisfied customers....will definitely return. Delicious food and a delightful host/owner. Our choices were prawn curry, lamb korma. chicken sagwala and chicken tikka masala and we recommend all of them. It's small so be sure to book so you don't miss out.

being an indian i rarely like to go to indian resturants, but this place has amazed me -The food was very well cooked totally tasted indian with the right spices and and the service was excellent. we wanted to have tandoori rotis which were not on his menu and they got that prepred for us without any fus and no extra charges. Very pocket firendly place :), the owner very friendly and Accommodating which was excellent and very allergy friendly for my son.
Big Cheese
Yea very tasty , lovely naan and a lot cheaper than other Indian restaurants in the area by about $18 for 2 people, that alone will keep me coming back and the fact he gave us a special deal, that kind of thing goes a long way with customers so I will be loyal to this guy and keep returning . Lovely food at a fair honest price, can't go wrong really what more do people want???
Karen Kerr
A bit hard to find and quiet at the moment, but this is a little gem. The dishes are fresh and taste as Indian food should... gorgeous favour and spice without overpowering heat. I'm a fan.

For Fathers Day, we took our entire family (all 25 of us including the kids) to Black Pepper for lunch. They don't normally open on Sunday lunch but when I called and asked, they went out of their way to accommodate us. They opened the restaurant especially for us and made it a really special experience for us all. The food was delicious, the service excellent and overall, we felt at home.. Thank you so much for a great experience and accommodating my rather large, loud family :)

Took the team (6 of us) here for lunch on a recent Friday after reading the below reviews. Excellent curries and naan bread. My chicken vindaloo was the best I've had in AKL. Everyone else was very happy (although maybe not as critical as me). Samosas were the only fail: too big, too much pastry and not enough flavour. The owner is very friendly and genuine in trying to please. The place is still basic and small (but clean) as conversion from a takeaways continues.
Will go again esp if they get a BYO licence. :)

Takeaway for 2 people - ordered way too much!
Monday night. Ordered Chicken Saagwala $12 Lamb Korma $12 Vege Biryani $11 and 2 servings of rice $4 - for the 2 people, this did 2 meals!
We don't order/eat out much for dinner - but I had heard someone talking about this place so thought we'd give it a try (in our neighbourhood). Ordered dishes that we are familiar with and very happy with whole meal.
Really tasty curries - went for safe mild (different places have different 'heat ratings') would go medium next time for heat.
Not that much meat in the curries - but seemed the same as other places we have purchased in the past.

Would definitely recommend.

Bout 20-25min wait for food (which I knew about) so would recommend ordering ahead.

I have tried out most of the Indian restaurants in Auckland.....but this is probably the best one i have come across...its a very small outlet with..i guess around 4 tables and a slightly dull ambience but it was ok as the food and service was quite good... We had ordered for prawns, chicken lollipop, chicken Manchurian dry and lamb cutlets al of them were cooked to perfection..and the marination and flavour was phenomenal...reminded me of the taste i got back home...for the mains we ordered prawns masala, chicken tikka masala, malai kofta(to die for), and dal makhani...all of them were simply superb...The naans...omg....it matched the quality and perfection of the ones we used to eat back home....Will definitely go back!!

Can be hard to find a good curry in Auckland, Black Pepper is the best I have come across. Very tasty curry sauces made fresh and very reasonably priced. Will definitely be back.

The best Indian Takeaway food I have tried. Excellent value in the $26 dinner meal of 2x curries, 2x Naans, 2x Rice & 1.5 litre soft drink. Great selection of food. Black Pepper does gives your taste buds a twist!

I love it! Loooove it! I moved from West Auckland to Onehunga and there was only one place I'd go for butter chicken (I love my butter chicken). When I moved to Onehunga, there were too many creamy curries out there. And I wasn't so sure on Black Pepper by the look but by golly me Black Pepper is yum! They are so cheap! And you can definitely count on them for taste, real taste of India and whether you want it spicy or not. I've been there about 3 times this week. Great! One more thing, their naan bread is PERFECT! Super soft, not brunt of flakey.

Hands down the best curry I have ever had. They do the spice exactly how you ask for it. Very good value for money and their takeaway menu has some good deals on it too.
Extremely friendly management and quick service.

Black Pepper Restaurant is awesome! The curries and chicken lollipops are just mouth watering. Thanks to owner and chefs for serving the original taste of India not like other Indian restaurants who only serve cream and tomato paste.
We got addicted to Black Pepper now!
We thought we will check this place out using the voucher and we were pleasantly surprised that the curries were of a very high standard in terms of taste, color and texture. They certainly know how to make good curries. Most enjoyable and will go back again.

The food here is very tasty, well cooked and very reasonably priced. The butter chicken was absolutely delicious and didn't taste of just tomato and cream like so many other places. The lamb kebabs were moist and tender and well seasoned and the pakora were moreish too. This is a newly opened takeaway place with limited seating at the moment but with plans to expand the seating soon.
