Review Walnut Cottage Cafe' - Orewa

Was recommended to come here for the Lambs Fry, so I made the trek out to this little cafe and it dosent disappoint. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful! The food was homely and very satisfying as well. They have a whole range of food items, hot or cold! Of course there are espresso based drinks, as well as alcoholic if you want a cold brew! There are lovely little tables inside to sit at, or there are tables littered all over the courtyard!

An absolutely beautiful place for coffee and food was terrific, we had the cheesecake and spinach pie both of which I can thoroughly recommend. I'm from Adelaide and really enjoyed the visit the outing to these parts.

Great hidden place for a coffee. The atmosphere brings your peace, super warm and cozy, ideal to relax and enjoy your meal/coffee. Kitchen delivers fast and delicious food. It is located next to a stream and outside seems very nice in the summer. Will come back soon.

I love the place, the views are amazing 🤩. Coffee is very rich in flavor and tasty , I tried spinach & feta roll it was yum , but one thing I noticed when I had my meal that there is a hard parts of spinach it’s hard to eat, not feel comfortable eating it. The test is perfect but these hard parts ! My partner tried carrots cake it was delicious 🤤. Highly recommend this place

This delightful cafe is tucked away at the northern end of Orewa. There is ample indoor and outdoor seating. The staff are friendly and welcoming. There was a selection of cabinet and menu food. The service was prompt. The food, delicious. Definitely worth a visit.

What a cute cafe nestled in nature. Such a good vibe, beautiful energy. They have beautiful indoor and outdoor dining. Friendly staff. Coffee had a good punch and meal was delicious. Perfect little cafe :)

Had a late breakfast with visitors from Greece and two of their friends from New Zealand. Food was a little average but adequate, prices were not bad. Presentation was O.K. Coffee was good. A bit of a mix up with the orders , but worked out in the end. Staff were friendly.

A lovely quiet spot. Large garden area our tea & cookie at 2.30pm on warm day was enjoyable.

Had a 90th birthday here. Booked the lovely sunroom. Everyone had a great time. Can't fault food and service excellent. The cake was wonderful too. Thank you Sarah

The cafe was really nice and when we ordered, the food came really fast, but the price of the food were quite high and it was a little bit small but after all I would give the restaurant a 4,6! 👍

I was recommended here by a friend who said it was dog friendly, which it is. It is hidden away, but definitely worth looking for. Car parking could be an issue but we were lucky. Really nice atmosphere, LOVELY staff. Inside and outside (the dog friendly bit) seating. Kids play area Would I go back if I was in the area? Hell, yes.

Great selection of food on the menu and in the cabinet. Can get beers and wine. Really good coffee. Friendly helpful staff. Quaint building

Had breakfast this morning for first time with new owners staff looked flustered orders going wrong and the food was barely edible. Use to have the best eggs Benedict around but this was dry salmon over cooked eggs and tasted like vinegar with old Spinach! Time to get a new chef before you start losing customers sorry

We had a lovely lunch at Walnut today. The portions are so generous and the food is fresh and tasty. We had great fish & chips, hamburger & chips & BLT. I can recommend the coffee as well. The owners are very friendly and the atmosphere is great!

Great coffee, but French toast was disappointing, plus kitchen staff wipe drop from jug of maple syrup with her fingers..ice. Presentation was appalling.

If I could rate the service from the manager lower then I would. I ordered 2 eggs on (GF) toast with 3 sides and it cost $38. When i questioned only receiving 2 rashers of bacon for $5 the manager came out and argued with me. She was aggressive and rude. My point being that the money wasn't the issue however the value for money was she told me it was a "choice" I had made. Upon adding it later, it worked out I paid $12.50 for 2 eggs (not including toast). When asking her to leave the table she started walking away and then continued to argue again. I had to basically yell at her to leave our table and let us eat in peace. Also, when asking for a bowl of water for the dog she told me to "go find it outside somewhere" and when I asked how to fill it up she told me to "wait" and then walked away. The other wait staff were great and the food was tasty however I probably won't be coming back anytime soon.

Service is wonderful and the food is gorgeous. Thoroughly recommend them. I loved the scones with jam and cream - yum! Our party had a lovely time - thank you so much.

Tracy Leighton
Spot on. We'll be back. Lovely people, lovely service and beautiful food. Thank you.

Environment was pretty. Coffee was bad. Worst BLT I've ever seen. Fish and chips were very average. Chips weren't cooked. Wrong beer delivered. Food took 30 mins. Grumpy disorganised service. But it was a beautiful spot so giving a point for that.
Miriam Burden
Cute, cozy place. Came in with a group but food didn't take too long. One coffee was bad but friendly staff replaced it with a much better one. Our table was bathed in the sunlight coming through pretty stained glass windows. Lovely brunch, thanks :)

Went to day with group,it is a wonderful setting inside and out. They gave us a room to ourselves with a nice outlook. The staff were nice and efficient.I was wary to come as other reviews were not positive and my first time.I was so pleasantly suprised! The orders all came together and they got them right. The meals all looked wonderful and well presented. The prices were acceptable and everything was Delicious and hot :) I am quite fussy, but couldn't fault and easily 10/10! I really enjoyed my vegetable lasagna and side salad( not just lettuce and tomato..blueberries/pineapple etc).First time here, but definitely coming back and recommending to others :)

Was there yesterday for lunch, we were told a 20 min wait for food when we paid and ordered, 70 min later cold unappetizing food turned up, someone came to talk to us, didn't introduce himself and gave no explanation, walked away in middle of conversation, gone down hill, never going back

If you're looking for a Cafe in Orewa, you won't find a better one.  Great environment, food is good, coffee is good.  Makes a great stop for mother's day or to eat and have a walk down the beach (you can park at the beach just across the road).
Olivia Bellini
Rude staff. Will not be back. The manager even tracked me down to argue with me. Value for money is also horrendous. Don't waste your time or money
Caroline Dunman
The food was amazing, staff great and the atmosphere was fantastic. Dog friendly with a water bowls for the dogs and a place to Tie them up while you order. Well thought out. Will be back.

I came to this coffee place after cruising around in Orewa to find a nice place to have breakfast . After visiting few places and even getting myself a sandwich and subway that was waiting on my passenger seat, I couldn't resist to the warmly service of the owners and their employees and sat down to grab a coffee and breakfast. I I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who really want their sunday experience touched with positivity followed up with a tasty flavour.

I have never experienced such rudeness and arrogance. We appreciate the staff was busy but to shout at the customers before the official time for closing the kitchen, that the kitchen is closed and then to throw a tantrum is unacceptable behavoiur  in the entertainment industry, particularly by the owner. There were undelivered orders and orders in progress and then to top it all the lady behind the counter, who we believe is the partner of the owner, functioned in slow gear, chewing gum and looking totally disinterest in proceedings.<br/>We will definitely not return and we will pass our experience onto our many friends who often frequent this cafe after a morning or afternoon walk on the beach. I think the owners can cross off at least 9 regular customers.

just went and got food here. had to write a review about how yuck the meals were. my table of 3 were starving as we had to wait over half an hour. my fish and chips were disgusting. i managed to stomach the chips but everything just tasted like salt. NO FLAVOUR AT ALL. the fish was terrible too. my boyfriend got the hot dog and spat half of it out. this place has such bland unbalanced food..... and that's me being nice. i usually see the best in situations but will NOT be coming back here. half a star for the counter lady, half a star for the beautiful location and also half a star for the big portions. if i had to rate the cottage on the food itself it would have a honest 0/5. my boyfriend spent almost $70 on terrible food for us; his friend spent $25 on an average pork belly. would have rather had mcdonalds, tbh. pity. waste of money.

Pleasant setting, great for breakfast or lunch on a sunny day, kid friendly and the food has a refreshingly different German theme, service is relaxed but that is deliberate

Lovely setting near the estuary. Food is OK, definitely had better elsewhere, but this café cleverly situated itself in a convenient location. Service can be improved as well - not particularly welcoming and bordering on ignoring customers when they first come in. Also, would not recommend the milkshakes - that's $6 NOT well-spent.

A beautiful cafe just beside orewa beach. Coffee taste good. Love their home made carrot cake, it was one of the best cake I had this year. Our baby love the bike. There is small play ground as well. Great place for family!

I love this place, and the people, and the food. The European chef cooks first class cuisine, we've been several times and it's always amazing. Service is unfailingly friendly and respectful and the setting is just lovely. The last time we went we had some friends staying from Germany and she is a superb cook. They loved it so we went back for breakfast the day they left. So nice to know there is somewhere you can take visitors that always hits the mark on all scores - food, service, atmosphere. Love it.

We went there with a group of about 15 this past Sunday. We were the last to order, but the food arrived in a very timely fashion. I had the scallop salad that was just fantastic. The scallops were perfectly cooked and their sweetness was fantastic. I did not anticipate the portion size, so was not able to finish the perfectly crisp bacon and perfectly toasted bread. Everyone in the group was very satisfied with their meals. <br/><br/>My partner had the fish and chips. Very well presented and he really enjoyed them. I get a it snarky when he orders fish and chips at nice places, but have to admit that that was a very well presented and just looking at it could tell it was not greasy and all.<br/><br/>Have told several friends about this place, so just might have to make an excuse to make the 40 minute journey to some fantastic food and wonderful service. <br/><br/>Please keep up the good work. I do want to try the apple strudel one day.
Mimi
Hi, have you try the muffins at the walnut cottage, the plum muffins? Delight..<br/>Lovely small cafe, great location, food and coffee. We love to go there .<br/>We will recommended this spot to our friends.

We chose to have brunch here last Saturday.<br/><br/>The meal was very great and the coffee good.<br/><br/>We mixed and matched the menu a bit which was no trouble to the staff.<br/><br/>I think looking at some of the reviews that maybe the Teutonic manner may have upset some but can't imagine there was any intent on the staff's part.

I would like to thank The Walnut Cottage Cafe so much for being such a community minded business. Along with other causes Klaus supports.... earlier this year he supported our special Children's Christmas Party. An event we organize for over 2,000 children who are physically or mentally impaired, Children who have life threatening Illness's or who have been victims of domestic violence all across Auckland. It is with his support we are able to give these amazing children at least one day in the year where they can join with caring businesses like Walnut Cottage Cafe.. and forget about parts of their little lives that are not so nice to deal with. So I wish you every success and hope that you can attend the event this year so we can thank you in person Klaus and Team. Regards, Kylie SCCP Projects Team.

My husband and I eat here often and the food is always very yummy. The staff and owners are lovely. We never have to wait for any meals. The coffee is lovely and eating out doors on the grassed area is so lovely in the summer time. We will keep coming back.
Shane
We moved to the Orewa area recently and have discovered Walnut Cottage Cafe - we are fussy about our coffee and this is now our cafe of preference. The food is lovely (though I would like to see more muffins) and the setting is superb. The staff are really friendly and helpful.
Jane Robinson
We went to Walnut Cottage for brunch on a Sunday morning. Although the setting is lovely, the decor is very tired, coffee lukewarm, food fairly average and rather expensive for what it was, and the woman who took our order was curt and unfriendly. We won't be going back.
Patrick Fail
One of the earlier reviewers summed it up well.. a "take it or leave it" attitude. Children's menu should be just that . Despite ordering a kid's meal the owner/manager made a mistake and then charged us the full adult price...with a casual comment..."you can all share it"<br/><br/>Decor needs a makeover.<br/><br/>All a pity as it is in a great location although a wedding location? Not.<br/><br/>The ducks are cool though!
Cherie Hegh
I live in the area and every time I've been for lunch the meals are nice. The coffee is also great. My favourite is the Salmon Caesar Salad, always fresh and tasty. The staff are nice and its a relaxing setting.
Justine Green
Been several times for lunch. Always pleasant and in a relaxed setting.
Marianne
This cafe offers lots of outdoor space and a playground for kids so that parents can relax while having a meal or snack. <br/>The ambience is nice and relaxing. There are some unusual items on the menue which makes this place interesting.
Chris
Although this cafe is in a lovely setting the food was poor quality, staff not very friendly with a 'take it or leave it' attitude. Expensive for what it is. I will not return.
Lesley
I was attending a wedding there recentley and was VERY disappointed with the food...we had salad type food to eat...this meal was at nite so who wants that at dinner esp when your paying for it..the only sort of meat was a ham on the bone..the breads were tough and rubbery to eat..the savouries were brought ones and were only just warm...we were charged $45 a head and unfortuntely i couldnt eat $45 worth of salad foods...there was no dessert either...i also thought that the grounds could have been spruced up some what..like weeding...also 1 ladies and 1 mans toilet for 40-50 people isnt that good.. 1 good thing tho was the ducks that came and introduced themselves.
