Review Asahi Japanese Restaurant - Orewa

Fantastic food, wonderful friendly service, glad I could help out other diners explaining what we had ordered. Was lovely to get the extra Miso soup. Highly recommend this restaurant. We will be back :)

It was a sunny and nice for dining out and found this little Japanese restaurant on my wanderings. Ordered a tofu lamen and it was fantastic. I love eating out and trying different food and places are my favourite pastime. Will come back soon to taste other dishes. Cheers!

Our go to place for Japanese dine in. I always order tempura prawn donburi, it's amazing. This time we tried something different Spicy Chicken Ramen and Katsu chicken curry. We are definitely ordering them again. Easy recommendation around the coast.

High quality food and staff, the sushi is perfect everytime, I have dined in and got take out and have had awesome experiences with both. If you are on the coast I definitely would recommend them!!

Beautiful place, well worth a visit. One thing I really enjoy is salmon sashimi and it was perfect!

I love this food, we got a lot of it as we expected it to be smaller portions, it was a lot bigger then we expected. It was quite cheap and it was refreshing after a long day in the car, coming back from Taupo. The place is furnished, and looks gorgeous. The food is presented well and is also amazingly delicious. 34/10 would DEFINITELY go again.

Incredibly delicious dishes but I wish the kitchen was open more often, we’ve tried 5 times now to get a hot meal and the kitchen always seems to be closed. People like to have lunch before noon if they have strange office hours, starting the kitchen at noon is a bit odd. Otherwise love it!

Ordered a take-away sushi roll for dinner. Definitely not fresh - we think they used the remaining chicken teriyaki roll that was left over from lunch time (left overs were in the cabinet). This meant we paid double the money, for left-overs that were poorly rolled and had chewy/tough chicken from sitting in the cabinet all day. Very disappointing.

Food is amazing, fantastic sushi! Really good service! My favourite place in Orewa. The best ratio of value and price! I can highly recommend that place.

Great sushi (somewhat important). Friendly staff. Yummy miso soup. They have soy sauce on the tables which is something I look for in a sushi place. Price is quite good. Afterward go get a coffee from Coasties!

Love the food here. We often come in for lunch and get the chicken teriyaki bento box. It's a massive complete meal. When being really piggy we get salmon sashimi too which is always beautiful and fresh.<br/><br/>It's a little erratic when ordering which is the only thing that stops us giving 5 stars. It would be nice when seated to eat in if they took your order from your table so you weren't in the way of the sushi takeout queue.

Delicious & fresh sushi! The chilli chicken don is my favourite. This place is perfect for a full sit down meal or just a quite bite. Lovely accommodating staff too

Went there on Tuesday 1PM, peak time. The steamer for the dumplings was turned off, I asked for the steamer to be turned on. The girl working there told me that it would take 10-15 minutes. I waited, during this time no eye contact, and not once did she check if the dumplings were ready. I went there myself but the girl called Kim turned her back on me and completely ignored me. I asked someone else for help, not happy with customer service here. Not the first time. Please talk to your staff.

I was here on Monday, at peak time; lunch. I had the steamed dumplings that the store was offering, only to my suprise that the dumplings were cold. When I asked a female worker if she could turn the steamer on she told me that "They are cooked, you can eat them cold." I wasnt very happy with that response, but I wasnt given any apology. Not happy.

Great prices for the quality and quantity. Been there every week for 4 weeks in a row. Great service and parking is quite convenient. Will definitely keep going. Favorite place to go in Orewa as of now.<br/>Update: been going here for months and it's consistently impressed

Lovely staff and the food is always amazing!! Teriyaki sauce is delish and they offer amazing options for everyone including vegans, a real gem.

Service: Fri 7pm We stopped in to order takeaways. An hour later we were given 3 of our 4 dishes with another 10min wait on the last dish. We got a refund instead as we were starving by this time. There were only 10 other customers in the restaurant at the time. Our dishes weren't supposed to be complex - teriyaki chicken, beef udon, 4 pieces salmon nigiri and the teriyaki fish which we didn't get.<br/>Food: the udon had what looked like 2-min instant noodles and an odd flavour, not like others we've had. Teriyaki chicken was also disappointing. Only salmon nigiri was OK but you can really stuff up blow torching salmon on top of sushi rice. Nothing offered to make up for the delay. Won't return.

Worst service ever. Waited 50 minutes for my takeaway single meal wasn't told about the long wait when I ordered. Then no one apologised throughout my wait for the food and still nothing when my food was handed too me. Food wasn't very good.

Always come for the salmon sashimi Don here. Yummy mixture of raw fish with rice, Apple, cabbage and avo. Chillies sauce is to die for. Always see them busy at lunch with there takeaway sushi options too.

Asahi is my local sushi shop which is great news for me.<br/><br/>The sushi here is amazing - great flavours and really well made. They also have a tasty range of extras too like chill chicken skewers, deep fried goods, crumbed prawns and veg patties. Plus the wasabi here is very good.<br/><br/>They also do delicious meals if you are dining in. The bento boxes are next level, as are the tempura vegetables, noodles and katsu dishes. The service is friendly and the food is delicious - would definitely recommend this place!

What this restaurant lacks in decor and size it more than makes up for in amazing food. It's not somewhere I'd recommend for a romantic date, but for a delicious & affordable dinner or lunch, or to grab some sushi on the run, it's great.  The staff are always friendly, the menu has loads of choice, and the food is fresh and delicious! It's kid friendly, with a menu that has something for all ages and not a chicken nugget or french fry in sight!!

Went here with 2 small children in the school holidays for dinner. A smallish room, with tables quite close to each other. The service was great. The food was cooked to perfection. We ordered chicken katsu, sushi for one child, and chilli beef don. The dumplings and spring rolls kept the kids happy until the mains arrived which wasn't long. Only disappointment was they didn't have one brand of beer on the menu that we wanted.

Came here yesterday for a takeaway order of Sashimi Combo, which cost $30.50.<br/><br/>The food was well presented with plenty of fresh fish.<br/><br/>The fitout is a bit warn and could do with a spruce up.

I often go to Asahi for Salmon Sashimi Don. Best sashimi don in town. Their salmon is always fresh and the chilli sauce is really nice too. Reasonable pricing as well. Definitely going back for more.

People saying this place is D rating but i went there yesterday and it was an A !  The food is actually really tasty and nice. Great service as well. Will definitely visit again!

We are locals and have been to Asahi many times. The food is great and very affordable. Don't come here if you like a fancy fit out, this is a great little cheap eat with fantastic food and is very popular. The staff are always very friendly.

My sister was pretty pissed off when she ordered a squid dish and they basically served her a salad with only a few pieces of actual squid. Not very good service in my opinion

I loved coming here for lunch while I was pregnant and never got sick baby's fine...avocados always ripe I'd have the avo sushi great service and miso 😀<br/>

Was nervous to come here from hearing people's hygiene horror stories about the place so I automatically checked the health rating before I entered which was an A. I knew I didn't trust the chicken so got vegetable and noodles which was surprisingly nice. My friends really enjoyed their meals too but I'm still not fully bought by the buzz of this place.

Not a great place atall. We went in for sushi but ended up having a stir fry creation, it did not taste good, the place is run down and the tables disgusting. This place needs a major refit. With hayami round the corner I am not sure why people go here .

This is our go-to on the coast. Prices are good, and the meals are delicious! Our standard order is the chicken katsu don which my partner orders with double meat and it is delicious! Also the best sushi in orewa!

We got dumplings and chicken teriyaki. Fast service, descent food. Very small portions for the price you pay. I'm sure there is cheaper around with better portions.

I got take-out sushi for lunch today and really enjoyed it. Salmon nigiri, fish egg sushi was great. I had pork katsu rolled sushi which was great and I usually find fried food sushi dry but this was moist and tender. I didn't pay attention to the hygiene rating but the food I chose was satisfying and I didn't get crook so I was happy

Shocked! The health rating is now a D! <br/><br/>I used to frequent Asahi for sushi lunches with many friends and work colleagues... but unfortunately now we are too scared to go! Totally gross! We ate in last week and whilst the cafe was busy and the service was efficient like usual, we were horrified to find the rating a D. In addition (will agree with other poster) - the bathroom door was foul. What's happened Asahi?? You used to be an institution???

Went into Asahi Orewa tonight and notice their food grading has slipped to a D. I'm quite concerned about that! Won't be back until they sort this out (and we go quite often and have always enjoyed the food).

Just come back from a quick meal at Asahi.<br/><br/>I must commend it. The food is consistently good, service cheerful.<br/><br/>Overall a great experience. Gave it four stars as is really a cheap and cheerful not a fine dining but otherwise good in all respects.

I went to Asahi a few days ago with my family ... for a pre-christmas treat and was really disappointed. I had been here before and the sushi was nice but on this occasion we had the cooked meals and got something quite different. <br/><br/>I ordered a spicy squid plate and what I got was cabbage with a sprinkling of squid. Half a handful maximum of squid was served. I don't see how this is acceptable. It cost $12.50 and when I go and order spicy squid plates in Auckland city I pay the same but get a plate that is half squid and half vegetables. It should be like this...at least!

My wife and I eat regularly at this restaurant. We like the food, and the staff are friendly. The atmosphere is not as nice as in the Hayami Japanese Restaurant and it is a little more expensive than the Sushi takeaway place around the corner next to the library. But there is one drawback that they'll have to do something about: the dirty toilet, diluted soap and disgusting doors leading to the loo. It doesn't look like they've ever been cleaned. It's sad because otherwise it's a nice place to eat.

We had a brilliant dinner here on Saturday night will definately return for another meal if we are ever in the area again. Thanks so much :-)

Asahi is absolutly the best Japanese I have ever had!!!!! The sushi is always fresh and the variety is amazing. The service is also fast, efficient and friendly...I have tried a heap of Japanese Retaurants...but Asahi is by FAR the BEST!!!!
