Review Vietnam Cafe - Otahuhu

Jim Li
Beef Noodle very good taste of noodle and so lots of beef than other restaurant, we can not eat so many then get take away box to take away, so generous boss , thanks
Vi Duc Phan
Nice food, big portions and at good prices too. But the variety and tastes did not match their Vietnamese counterparts.

Back again to our favourite Vietnamese restaurant in Auckland the “Vietnam Cafe located at 38 Atkinson Avenue, Otahuhu, Auckland 1062 New Zealand.” This restaurant never fails to disappoint. A young gentleman promptly gave us a table & served us as soon as we walked in. We ordered a prawn rice noodle soup for hubby, my usual rice noodle beef ball soup, our hot served spring rolls 2 serves & 2 x pineapple smoothies! Deliciously cooked and my husband’s favourite rice noodle broth. Staff are always polite & kind to everyone who walks into their restaurant. Highly recommended. I’ll be back here with more family on my next visit to New Zealand.

This place brings me so much joy, My family have been coming here for many years back when David Lange also I've found this gem. Everything is so tasty however my favorite is the spring rolls and the beef vermicelli. Absolute freshness

Delicious! My partner has come here for many years and I tried it for the first time and wow very yummy 🤤 definitely diamond in the rough. Prices are great for the amount you receive and staff are friendly.

Local favourite. Tasty Shrimp rice noodle soup (missed pic opportunity), Spare ribs are pretty good & thee best fried spring rolls & wontons. Wheelchair friendly, lots of seating with extra parking out back. Hygiene has improved!

Good food. There’s not enough parking though

Have not been over 15 years and the food is still the same which is good as I loved the dishes. Went as a group of 6 people and we enjoyed our meals. Sooo good and still a popular place to eat

Visited the Vietnam 🇻🇳 Cafe today with my family, the food is always delicious, never disappointed when I visit. Staff are always hospitable, kind and welcoming. The establishment is spacious, the Cafe is always busy. I love their deep fried won tons, spare rib soup, deep fried spring rolls, Shrimpball noodle soup and won ton soup. I personally recommend you try this spot once.

Trying to find parking if driving 🚗 can be a challenge as very limited parking at front. There is parking at the back gets full on the busy times. Once in side spacious dinning area . 🚻 Baby high chairs available as well as toilets. I ordered the curry chicken noodle 🍜 soup which was nice . Good portions soup was ok. Also the wontons were delicious and crunchy the way I like them. Coconut smoothie 😋 Prices compared to other Vietnamese restaurants I have been to is very worth the price. They even have fortune cookies 3 for a dollar.

Best Vietnamese restaurant in New Zealand hands down. I've been dining at this restaurant since early 90's. Every time I come, I leave very satisfied. That's why I always go back even though I live in North Shore.

Simply the Best Food 👌 on the Planet especially the Chicken Curry Rice Noodle Soup and to wash this down with a Jack Fruit Nectar! This can be your favourites too!"

The classic. The original. Came here when I was young. Back here again and it hasn't changed. Still good prices and fast service. Will rather go here than some nearby. Could do with a little revamp perhaps but still a great experience.

Food was great, would definitely go again.

Love this place gone nearly a thousand times and it just hits the spot every time and its worth the amount u pay which i love and u can get full off one meal which is awesome

You can never go wrong at this place. If you don't know what to get, just get the pork spareribs on rice or rice noodles with a side of egg and sausage. Honestly the best combo! Don't forget their Vietnamese Spring Roll!
Yue Zhang
That's a traditional Vietnam Cafe with valuable food price and wonderful customer service. As a food person, that is the best Vietnam food l have ever eaten in AKL !!
Blair Reece
Great food. Lovely place to call in for a bite. My personal favourite is the fried wontons and spring rolls

Our family come here all the time for pho from the shore and one of the best
Rebekah
We come here 3+ times a week! Love every dish that we’ve tried and the staff are very hard working! Keep up the great work!

Went here for very very late lunch, we ordered pork ribs on rice, summer roll, pork fine egg noodles and many more to try here. A lot of nice food with good prices.

The taste has definitely changed here.
Food was so salty that I was thirsty all day.

The staff was serving the food, but the fingers were in the food. (Disgusting)
Chia Laketa
Probably great food, but they’re totally unwilling to provide a vegetarian/pescatarian option or slightly modify a dish. We were willing to pay extra to get pork spring rolls taken off a dish and replaced with prawns, and they wouldn’t budge. The waiter was rude about it, so we left.

This place is far from the city but the trip is definitely worth every drip of fuel! I recommend the following:
1. Spare Ribs rice noodles soup - my fave, has generous portions of pork spare ribs, it is greasy and salty which makes it even better. If I crave a bit more spice I add a little bit of their chilli to the soup.
2. Chicken Rice Noodles soup - I found those that didn’t like the spare rib version really enjoyed this dish. This has more of a clean soup and is less salty and less greasy, and almost tastes healthy and nutritious.
3. A plate of Spring roll (deep fried and accopmanied by lettuce and dip) to share.
4. If you have room in your stomach I recommend their Ice Coffee (the one with condensed milk) as dessert.
I usually mix the sriracha looking sauce and hoisin looking sauce and dip my meat / spring roll here if I feel like it.
Takeaway - They give you soup, meat and noodles in separate containers. I normally ask for non-cooked noodles so all you have to do is boil in hot water when you get home. Remember to ask for a container for the chilli, and if you want the sprouts I think you have to ask as they dont include this.
Very cheap, and massive portions (you can order either small size or normal size - their "normal" is massive, could even share between two ppl)
There are a box of tissues on each table and you can help yourself to water.
Service is good and quick.

Hands down best spot in South Auckland, Friendly staff as well as amazing food!!

Best place ever, good food, good service, best sring rolls and spare ribs!
My family and I have been coming here regularly for over 20 years! Fast service, great food, pho and spring rolls are so fresh and delicious. Also great portions for a cheap price! My favourite Vietnamese place in Auckland for sure.
Caitlin
Large portions for cheap prices! Very very delicious food. I usually can eat tonnes but they gave sooo sooo much I couldn’t even finish :((( but service is average. Worth visiting if you’re in the mood for pho !
KareMay Matthews
🤦🏻‍♀️Serve is average today, only cause they were busy 😁😉 the food was so fresh and so clean clean 🍜🍚🍶look this is a great venue for families to catch up and feast 👍🏼💯
Miura Elikana
The food here has this freshness to it that just gives the meal that extra kick. The flavours combine so well, there’s a decent amount of meat with the salad and vermicelli. The service is very hospitable, they offered to charge a customer’s phone which to me wasn’t necessary. 👏🏽. It’s very affordable as well. I did feel that my even though it tasted great there was a more onions than needed in my dish and that the only think I disliked. I will be returning to try more dishes though.

Hadn't been to Vietnam Cafe for a few years and realised how much I had missed it. I ordered chicken curry rice noodle soup with fresh rolls and my wife ordered Hainanese chicken on rice. Very generous servings and more reasonably priced than other Vietnamese restaurants. Loved everything, really tasty, chicken was super tender and sauces complimented perfectly. Service and ambience were average however I was there for the food. Prefer Otahuhu over the Botany branch, just seems a bit more authentic. I'll be back!!!
O
spring rolls are nice and crunchy and fresh- sooooo good. The broth for the soup is also good aswell. Affordable and the staff is really nice. will be back to try other dishes.
Muriel
favourite place to eat vietnamese and the service there is so friendly. i really like the guys and young lady who always provide friendly and efficient service. enjoy eating the chicken rice noodle soup because its always full to the top of the bowl and plentiful with great flavour. the other go to dish are the deep fried spring rolls which are always full of crunch and taste and just right with the accompanying sauce. so friendly and tasty food. its weird, usually i enjoy listening to music, here i enjoy eating and sitting in the quiet of the restaurant, somehow i always manage to go when it is quiet and not noisy! love it, so great ambience there for me too, time to catch up on reading the herald or just eating in peace. i ALWAYS leave full lol
Tee
Enjoy going here for an after work meal, always order the sore ribs on rice with a extra rib on the side, wontons and the deep fried spring rolls. Can’t go wrong with that combo. My partner always orders the spare rib soup 👍🏾 good value for money.
Taina Fox-Matamua
Me and my partner love it here. We come at least every week. Lovely service and very delicious Vietnamese cuisine! Our favourite dishes are the fresh spring rolls and the pork ribs on vermicelli.
Best part about it all, is that it’s very cheap . Would highly recommend
Dec 2018, been here for lunch.
We order spare ribs on rice and Vietnamese spring roll. I like the spring rolls.
Is very authentic Vietnamese flavorful food.
My husband has been here a long time ago, the restaurant like been here forever.

Bro it's the best vietnamese food you'll ever get in aotearoa I've been going to this pozzie for awhile absolutely love love love the kai at the cafe chur
Tastebuds On Point
First Vietnamese restaurant I ever went to as a little girl tasted delicious then, still tastes delicious now! There’s not much I can fault, food wise everything tastes yummy and beautiful! Great atmosphere and great customer service. However although I’m happy the food still taste the same as always so does the restaurant ‘looks wise’ lol restrooms desperately need a revamp lol
CCS
Below average quality of food and drinks. The pho broth isn’t flavourful. The meat seemed like it had been precooked. The pineapple smoothie tasted like canned pineapple, and the coconut one... I don’t even know what flavour that was meant to resemble. The accommodates a lot of people and the service is prompt so there’s that at least.
Wheelz Tan
My cousin took me to this cafe, and recommended Spare Rib Rice Noodle Soup👍🏻 loved the flavour of the broth, i can just eat the noodles with no meat and still taste just as good 🙌🏻 this is my fav noodle soup !
Greg Koia
Come here regularly. The spring rolls and spare rib on rice are to die for. Fish ball soup is also highly recommonded. Cheap with fast service.
Its Me
You get what you paid for so can't complain portion is huge so guess that's a plus? But I barely get clean plates or silverware well since it's a cheap pho place guess it's forgivable? When I'm having a bad ass hangover day I would come eat their seafood combi pho it's full of frozen processed seafoodish junkie stuff that just taste really good for me after a heavy drinking night lol
Czym07
Have been coming here well over 20years a few hickups but they fix the problems. Back areas tidied right up, prices have risen, menus have changed, staff come and go but the food quality stays the same.
Mincho
My family and I have been coming to this restaurant for many years but I am never going back after my experience tonight.

We ordered rice noodle soups and spring rolls and the tall waiter with glasses literally threw the dishes at our table not only once but every time he served us. My family and I were very shook at bis service and when questioned about the service all we got was, “oh it’s too busy.” I was absolutely disgusted.

Its quite obvious that they are not training the staff on service and they clearly don’t give a shit. They should at least consider training basic service skills before they hire new staff. And also basic hygiene and cleaning too because this place is never clean and always has sticky floors and tables. Horrid place and shocking service. Never going back again.

Legend has it that this Vietnamese restaurant has been here since forever. Otahuhu is the place to go to for authentic Vietnamese food in Auckland. Here in Otahuhu there are several Vietnamese restaurant but I think Vietnam Cafe was the first to open up here.

The food is affordable and delicious and has been around for a long time. On a cold winter's day, a good old fashioned steamboat is the way to warm you up.

The steamboat here is a reasonable price with a fantastic variety of ingredients included in the steamboat meal. It's great for sharing and is an incredible winter warmer.

You know it's an authentic Vietnamese restaurant when the table is filled with free condiments.
Anthony Dewan
Very prompt service. We were served straight away. Short wait for our food. Smoothies came out first. The springs rolls are the highlight of this place and come hot and crunchy
Happy Eater
Have been coming here for years! It used to be our treat dinner when I was a child.

Space is big and clean. No major decorations. Service is very quick even when it’s packed. It would seem they recently changed the front of house staff who are a lot more engaging then the last which is also a bonus.

People have their favourites here. Spare ribs seem to be a popular choice among the diners. We have always brought the same thing. Spare rib egg noodle soup dried (soup comes on the side) or you can have it in your bowl just don’t ask for dried. Hainamese Chicken and chicken curry egg noodle soup. Always big portions and delicious! You will definitely fill up!

Side dishes of both fresh and fried spring rolls are very good. Can sometimes be a tiny wait on spring rolls only because they are so popular. Wontons are also a good choice for side dishes.

Will definitely be returning here for many years to come. Recommended to anyone who is a fan of Vietnamese.
David V
Decent selection and good value for money. Can highly recommend the combination on rice - good selection of dishes. Also nice range of drinks.
Egyptt Patau
Service is slow but that’s due to being packed hella often :’) Prices are reasonable for proportions given. Good for a family feed, nothing fancy or too casual. Self service water and cans. In dire need of air conditioning or some sort of cooling source ;( not so great on the aesthetics for photo ops
Yusoff Kamal
My friend suggested this place and i definately agree with his suggestion.

Good food. Portion is generous and the drink...is just so good.

The place is massive, basic and plenty of seats.
You need to order your meal at the counter.
The food is really delicious...truly enjoy it oh and dont forget to buy yourself fortune cookie 😉😉
John Heather
have been coming to this cafe for many years, sadly as the ownership changes so does the quality of food and service. today we placed a phone order and due to confusion had to reorder. Also, they charged a different price and says that the website has different pricing. Getting home and finding a few things wrong I rang the cafe, and was told our order was still sitting there? and that he was unaware of a website..food was average compared to other times. Gluggy rice, the soup was dangerously hot and lacked the flavour I normally crave...no longer going back.

Had takeaways from this place and dined in here today and had my fave hainanese chicken; so lovely and fresh and the side sauce that comes with it is out of this World; yum! The decor is nothing much pleasing but don't let that fool you as the place is always busy and the food is great; I hear the soup is amazing too
Josephine Numanga
Love everything about this cafe fast food fast service yummy food, my go to wonton rice noodle soup dry, side would be fried spring rolls four piece and my second go to would be the curry chicken on rice😍😍😍 best ever catch me here all the time.

Been coming here since I was a little girl absolutely love this place!! My go2 number1 Vietnamese restaurant, the food is yummy yummy yummy!!

Have been going here for years and food is always fresh. Staff are always friendly. Was recently refurbished with new furniture so it's more appealing to dine in. Love their stir fry chicken on rice.
Tweenie Prebble
Friendly, fast service but most of all yummy. Husband and I have almost tried everything on the menu but I keep going back to Combination dish and hubby Beef stew.. always leftovers for lunch.
Angelitsa
Have been coming here for years for the Spare Ribs Rice Noodle Soup and Jackfruit Nectar drink.

Cleanliness in the Cafe is very obviously lacking but the food can't be replicated which keeps me coming back. A good mop and some spray-and-wipe would bring my rating up to a 4.
Khaleesi
Dined in this morning with husdband. Place was basically empty. Food was good and came out fast, friendly service. I love how the menu has nice clear pictures so you know what to expect. Only low is that as I was walking my shoes were stuck on sticky floor. Place didnt feel clean even though they are "A grade".
Thompson AJ
Used to eat here often. I'll start with the good. The food is delicious, my top two dishes would be stir fry chicken on rice and the curry chicken on rice is my normal order. However always overlooked the cleanliness, the floors are disgusting and sticky and I doubt they have been cleaned properly in the 6 years I've been in. We hadn't gone here in over 3 years and went two weeks ago. Yes again food is great, but just walking in hearing the sticky floors suck the soles of my shoes was revolting. I could see the rating but think also overall cleanliness of the restaurants weigh in heaps.

Been a regular here for ages now! Sure the place could do with a makeover but trust me the food is really good, quality is consistent, great portion sizes and fresh rolls are the best in Auckland. Love it
Teresa T-Maruariki
My family and I have been coming here for years, the food is great, the staff is good and the food comes out fast! Family favs are the spring rolls, fresh rolls and the soups 👌
FOODFANATICJIMMY
I am a regular customer to this restaurant as it is only few minutes away from work. As one of the earliest Vietnamese restaurants to have been established in Auckland, there are a few signature dishes. Of which, my favourite being their chicken rice noodle soup and fried spring rolls. The benefits of their noodle soup is that the portion sizes are very large and the soup is quite rich. The downside is that it is a little bit oily. Their spring rolls are fantastic and works very well with the sauces.

For improvement, they could do with a little bit of a new decor and a cleaner look. If you want to start off at a good note, try not to enter the restaurant from the back door.

Service wise, nothing spectacular but not too bad either.
Jamsammy
This place is a personal favourite of mine. Myself and my family have been coming back for many years.

It's normally bustling with people, the service is quick and the food is really good, in particular the deep fried won tons, being the best I've tasted.

It is lacking in cleanliness but the food is good enough to ignore any of that.
STRADS
This place has been one of the eateries I used to visit very often back in the 90's where there were very few choices in Otahuhu. Vietnamese Cafe has obviously changed hands - maybe many times already. I used to have combination on rice (with a piece of thin pork chop, a sausage, some meat slices, a fried egg & a small bowl of "MSG" soup); spare ribs with sausage on rice; deep-fried spring rolls. Today, we chose the same stuff. Taste was bland. Well, it's just an experience renewed. (Food - 3/5; Ambience - 2.5/5)
Jason Yeoh
11 dollars for two small prawns and one thin sausage on white rice. Does not add up to the price. Service is at least on time. They said it would be ready in 10 minute and it was.

The iced white coffee was good. It had that unique slightly burnt cofffe taste to it.
Grace
Came here today and the pho was great! So tasty and delicious as well as a great portion size. The broth itself was silky but not too salty with a lovely depth to it. Would definitely recommend! The spring rolls were also delicious - some parts were a bit too crunchy for my liking but the flavours were great! Speedy service too
Naiks.
This place lacks variety. What they have is nothing special. The food is bland and the only thing that was nice were the spring rolls. Honestly, Try It Out is a better Vietnamese option in Otahuhu. This was disappointing.

The pork spare ribs on rice - was not a spare rib. It was a pork chop.

This place is horrid.
Rayes.
Wonton noodle soup ✅
Spring rolls ✅
_
Solid spot to go to if you love your Vietnamese food. The customer service is always good and their food service is fast. Seki place to go for solid food at a cheap price always enjoy going there.

- Vietnam Cafe Otahuhu 💯

Romer De Mayo
Been going to this place for almost 15 years! The food are great. Foods comes really fast.customer service is pretty good. What can i say i have been in a lot of Vietnamese restaurant in new Zealand and australia but nothing compares to this place a simple restaurant nothing fancy but foods are really great value for money as well!!! Keep up the good work!
Lara Adams
Been there a few times always order their pho. Its nice and tasty but I feel it does lack the authentic vietnamese flavor. The quantity is quite good (I cannot eat anything else after the pho) and the prices are reasonable. The interior is quite worn out and the staff are but hard to get to (as they stand around instead of offering their services).
I would love to try Sam Woo which is just opposite of this place and see of their pho is any better
Winn
Had the lemon grass pork with noodle soup and spring rolls. The pork was tender with a nice flavour but the accompanying noodle soup was just average. Found the spring roll filling a bit too mushy for my liking.
Mareta Hunt
This is my favourite vietnames food. My fav is the pork spare ribs soup and the lemon and lime soda with wontons absolutely to die for. Im always craving this and im not even pregnant! Which says alot about how good this is!
Beardie
Loved the pork ribs with hot noodle soup dish. But would recommend asking for the pork ribs on the side cos they got soggy towards the end.

Chicken Vermicelli was average. The noodles were overcooked, chicken didn't have the smoky grilled taste as other places and most important of all... The bean sprouts and veges were not fresh.

Overall a cheap dine out. Only would return for the pork ribs there if passing by.
Andrean
Hands down the best Vietnamese restaurant in Auckland!
The only let down is the place is far away from where we live. But everytime we go to or from airport, we always make time to eat at this place.
Scentral
I have been a regular here for years and I can never get sick of this Vietnamese cafe. Food is cheap which is great and you get big portions which is even greater.

My personal favourite when coming here is the Pork Spare Ribs on Rice (which I highly recommend) with Fried Vietnamese Spring Rolls as a side. Everything is cooked perfectly and all come with sauces/dips that compliment the food very well.

Customer service needs some improvement but who cares when the food is great.

Overall it is always a very pleasant experience and what makes it even better is that you can get everything on the menu takeaway. Definitely recommend it.
Quan
Love love this place I can't remember how times I've been here but I definitely know this is the best place to eat on a empty stomach hehe 😍😍💯👌🏽❤️

Its mothers day so we decided to dine here. We have ordered the wonton egg noodle soup, spare ribs egg noodle soup and spare ribs on rice (popular dish on this place).

The broth on the soup is tasty, good portion as well. The egg noodle is yum has a good texture.

The deep fried spring rolls (locals fav) is nice, extra lettuce would be nice as we have only given 3 small pieces of lettuce at that time. Not the freshest lettuce I have seen.

Service - staff could have been friendlier. We have requested hot tea but nobody seems to care. Needed to ask at least 3 staffs before they told us "they have no tea".

The place needed a TOTAL renovation. Chairs and tables looks old. Needs to improve cleanliness as well.

Food here is very satisfying -no doubt. But the overall experience we had earlier is worth a rate of 2.0.
Sophia O-W
Cheap and huge portions this place is great! I had the wonton soup with egg noodles, the Vietnamese spring rolls and the spare ribs on vermicelli (which I highly recommend). All were very fresh in taste and side dish of mung beans always comes with your meal, as well as sauces. I had a pleasant experience here, the staff were friendly and the food comes out very quick! Good idea to takeaway from here.

We've been regularly coming to the Vietnam cafe for the past twenty years they where one of the original Vietnamese restaurant in Auckland and to this day they still serve the original menu of day one ,the quality of food has slipped a little over the past few years, maybe not the service and quality of food like they use to dish up maybe trying to cut corners to save cost??which reflects on their restaurant now days, but in saying that they still serve up the best fried and fresh spring rolls around and their soup broth is worth the the visit over here alone.....
Reign
I love coming to this Vietnamese restaurant besides the poor service where some of the staff can be not so friendly . But that doesn't matter because I love there food and it's so reasonably priced especially the spare ribs on dried egg noodle with the fried spring rolls which I get every time I come here as I have been dinning her for over 4 years now. An awesome place to eat with your family or partner for such tasty dishes at such good prices. Reminder must try the " Spare Ribs On Dry Egg Noodle " it's a pleaser and very filling .
TonyF3
Not really vietnamese. Should change the name of the restaurant. Waitress did not even know what a pho was which was not a promising start. The pho tasted like chicken soup. And the spring rolls were missing something vietnamese. The atnosphere was ethnic which was like. And the toilets were clean- a bonus.
R & A
This rating is only based on the quality of the food and is not taking into consideration the old run-down decor.

No dishes here resembled any Vietnamese cultural authenticity and we could taste it in every dish. I can appreciate that the demographic this place caters for is more interested in a "cheap feed" rather than "a taste of Vietnam".

We had the beef ball noodle soup, spare ribs on rice and fried spring rolls. The beef was bland, chewy and tasteless. The soup lacked flavor, the spring rolls soaked in oil and lacking any trace of Vietnamese flavors. The spare ribs quickly deep fried and probably the best tasting thing was the plain rice.

If your looking for a quality meal out and want to try authentic Vietnamese home style cooking with fresh ingredients cooked and prepared with care... Look else where! Its not here.
Kaaaaaailah
i love coming here for some downtime with their yum spring rolls ! 😁 the foods good service is alright .. Its clean just needs a decor update 💕
Cheryl Schuster
One of my family's favourite spots for Vietnamese food! The service needs help but who cares when the food is so good! We obviously don't go there for the service. We always order the spring rolls and spare Rib egg noodle soup! Large portion for around $11 but I think the price has slowly crept up
over the years. The inside is not flash either and the toilets are pretty much back alley squatting, but again I haven't had better Vietnamese spring rolls and soup anywhere else
Trish H2
Im a regular here. Love the chicken noodle soup especially at winter. The prices are really good on all their soups and salads. Their spring rolls are really good with the lettuce and dipping sauce. If you are out Otahuhu ways and wanting something filling, healthy and easy on the pocket. Come check this place out especially if you're not too fussy about what a place looks like. Hygiene rating is A. So I'm happy and my tummy is too lol.
Laura And Peli
Always great quick service here. Cheap prices and big portions. The perfect hangover feed. My favourite is the curry chicken egg noodle soup!
Kristy Sorrell
We've been working our way through the Otahuhu Vietnamese restaurants, and I was quite pleased by our dinner here. Food and drinks arrived almost instantly after we ordered. We had beef noodle soup (huge, the stock impressed me, but some coriander or herbs would have been very welcome), fried spring rolls (very good, PERFECT nuoc cham sauce), and vermicelli beef (good, but shy on the herbs again). Apart from the lack of herbs/coriander we really enjoyed our food.

As always, I would like to see free range pork and chicken as optional extras on the menu - I can add prawns to my meal, so clearly it's possible. (Sorry readers, but I am going to bang this drum until something changes).

Overall, for $38 in total (including two drinks) we were pleased with our meal.
Doreen Milo
One of my regular spots I hit when I need something fresh and filling. My favourite dish is the stir fry chicken vermicelli with wontons sprinkled over it...so good! Amazing food & drinks with great prices but the staff could amp up their customer service...Smile😁please.
MS MNC
Hands down best chicken rice noodle soup and deep fried spring rolls in the area. Far superior to its neighbouring restaurants in Otahuhu. Soup is full of flavour and ready quick smart despite the place always being busy. I am a regular here and notice the high amount of Asian foodies who also frequent Vietnam Cafe which is an excellent indicator of the food being great. The quality of the food far outweighs the service, but to me as long as the food continues to be this flavourful and tasty, I'm sold.
Christina Fa'afili
My go-to place if I haven't made dinner. I always get the spare ribs on rice with spring rolls on the side. Definitely recommend if you're looking for something quick, tasty, filling and cheap in South Auckland. Approx. $40 if dinning for two ☺️
Marcella
Average at best. Probably not my first choice for Vietnamese food in Otahuhu since there are better ones around. The only saving grace for this place is probably the egg noodles.

I ordered the spare ribs dried egg noodles and my bf ordered the wonton dried egg noodles and we both agree the noodles were pretty good. The wontons and spare ribs were so-so. We also got the spring rolls which were ok. The dipping sauce that came with it was really lemony though and was kinda weird. Presentations of the dishes were also a bit sloppy.

Not the cleanest restaurant and service wasn't the best. Could do with a bit more smiles. Not rushing to come back. Maybe in the distant future when we're craving egg noodles.
Stango
I looked at going to two other Vietnamese restaurants in Otahuhu today before settling for this one as it seemed the least busy (I was on a 30 minute lunch break from work). I ordered the spring roll on vermicelli. My food was quick (10 mins), even though there were still lots of other people in the establishment. The staff were friendly when I split chili vinegar all over myself and the table. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but I'm glad I tried Vietnam Cafe out - it's a welcome change to my usual easy greasy takeaways which are readily available in Otahuhu. I will definitely be revisiting this cafe again soon.

REVISIT:
Combination on rice is SO GOOD! Got to taste a bit of everything with this dish. Loved the crunchy pork chop, shredded pork is up to standard, prawn was delicious (might get a whole plate of this next time!), and the sausage was nicely fried. Sunny side up egg was done just the way I like it.
Nyssa
Looove this place. My bf and I go here a lot! So much to choose from, I've tried a few and they were all so good! Nothing to complain about honestly. The prices are unbelievably cheap for meals so filling. Must try!
Renor Kay
Best rice noodle in NewZealand
And not anymore
Price 3.5/5
Food 4/5
Service 1/5
Atmosphere 2.5/5
Recommend pork spareribs rice noddles.
Brave Eat
Best Vietnam restaurant in Auckland! I have heard so many great things about this restaurant that I had to try it. Chicken noodles and spring rolls were very tasty. Although I do feel like the restaurant is little bit dirty and customer service is bad.. food is great so I give more rating for that.

The place looks little bit dodgy from outside but inside is actually clean and the foods are really good and cheap.

I LOVE their fried wontons. I think it's the best in Auckland I have had, crispy & thin wonton wrapper and yummy filling.

The menu is great with pictures! so it's easy to order. If you don't know what to order, I recommend to start with those ones that have 'combination' in the names haha. So you can try many things at first time.

Combination on rice is a good choice of all these meats and egg in HUGE portion and cheap. Then I learnt from combination dish that spare ribs are good :)

Every dish is worth a try. You will not be disappointed! I have been going there for over 10 years and it will not disappoint.

By pass the fact the building isn't too flash, the flavours of the food are amazing!! And absolutely affordable.

I will continue to eat here every month :-)

Good:
- One of my favourite vietnamese noodle restaurants; most dishes are great but would recommend the spare ribs noodles.
- Does takeway for noodles

Bad:
- It could be cleaner
- Staff/waiter could be friendlier

Overall good and would recommend this place to anyone who just wants to just get to business and eat some vietnamese noodles, and arent bothered by dirty tables and unfriendly staff - the hallmarks of a good noodle house I find.

3.5 Yums
Food is real good especially the wonton soup. The serving aswell is big so a takeaway container is available for the leftovers. Only letdown is the service. The workers are slack and act like they don't want to work there

The food is absolutely amazing!
I have been going to this cafe for almost 10 years and I absolutely love it! Sure the building looks a bit old but the food is divine and it really tastes like fresh food from Vietnam. The spring rolls and fresh rolls are so tasty and the staff have memorised my order. Service is great, food is amazing and it much better than more popular places like hansan. I definitely recommend this to everyone! It's such a great restaurant

Best place if you want spring rolls and that "special sauce".... drool.
Love their spare ribs on rice as well. Only things I ever order!
And free water....C'mon, you don't have to keep asking for water! Just refill yourself!
Don't judge a book by its cover...looks dodgy, but the food is the best in South Auckland!

I love this place it's got special rich taste different from other Vietnamese restaurants maybe it's because lots of msg been added lol but who cares it tastes great and i don't go there everyday. Sure the building looks a bit rundown and dirty but one thing i noticed their kitchen is clean and also things like inside of sauce containers are clean as opposed to flashier places like Hansan they might look clean from outside but sauce container looked so dirty looked like they kept filling it up without proper washing. I don't expect great customer service here just enjoy their food. If u want customer service go more upmarket restaurants

Worst service ever.
Server delivers our Combination Noodles with his thumb IN THE BROTH, practically SPILLS half a cup's worth as he impatiently slides the bowls across our table AND he just turns and walks off after such a disgusting display of manners as if he doesn't give a sh*t whether or not we have anything to say. Not surprised. All he's probably ever served is himself. Mid-20's, earrings, a wannabe haircut, one look and you realise that he's only there because of whatever relationship he has with the owner, NOT because they hired him for his outstanding resume. No respect for customers at all, i doubt he even has any respect for himself. You know when you walk around town and sometimes you see those angry looking Asian dudes, smoking and spitting, wearing grey sweat shirt/pants? Yeah. Our server was one of those. A fitting label for him would be "scum of society".

Food was good though. Spring rolls were brilliant. Broth in the noodles was a little oily. Not worth going back for though.

Signed up on MenuMania just to warn all of you

#1- Food is always great. no doubt! fresh ingredients, flavours are always spot on. love the food!!!
#2- the building itself is not so good, it looks run down, dirty and not looked after.
#3-baby high chairs are broken, not safe!
#4- tables and chairs look unclean
#5-service? i dunno........
#6-parking is terrible in front, but side driveway to back/side of building is better, there is a large lot out the back, but hello it's Otahuhu lock it or loose it. LOL

Over all I go for the authentic flavours but try block out everything else while I'm there.

love the spring rolls and the spare ribs. Also the wonton dried egg noddle. The only downsize is the smell of the place (pretty dirty on the back side).

Very good tasty food. Best spring rolls in the world.

The service is okay but the cleanliness behind the counter and in the kitchen looks disgusting.

To walk into the back entrance is gross. Needs a good cleanup as the oil leakages from their drums are there as well as the rubbish they throw out.

I have seen some of the staff go into the toilet and come out without washing their hands. Yuk.

Poor for cleanliness but excellent for food and value.

Spectacular food.

A large range of noodle/soups to die for.

Haven't had good pho since I went home to melbourne last year.

The restaurant aint pretty but who cares when the food is good and the prices very affordable.

About $9 for a main....$5 for an entree.

Go the beef noodles and a side of spring rolls in

by far the best restaurant I have ever been to, value for money, have been eating here every thursday for 7 yrs along with other familiar faces I have seen there for the past 7 yrs, in fact one couple said they have been going there every week for 17yrs, so filling and loads of variety, staff are brilliant, one lady can memorise your whole order, we usually have about 9-10 ppl ordering when she does it.

There’s something about the fresh, honest taste of Vietnamese food that I crave on a regular basis. The flavours are simple, but so aromatic.

Vietnam Cafe was recommended by a staff at the Vietnamese grocer up the road, always a good sign. There is a cluster of Vietnamese restaurants in Otahuhu, and competition in proximity always makes for a better standard of food. The decor is a different matter altogether, the look is 80's canteen charm, with unnerving mirror panels lining the back wall.

The menu consists mainly of rice noodle, egg noodle and rice dishes. For groups, there is also steamboat and Vietnamese beef fondue.

The mark of all good Vietnamese restaurants is their version of phở. Vietnam Café calls it ‘beef in rice noodle soup’, a massive understatement. Phở is the national dish of Vietnam and epitomises what Vietnamese food represents, - nourishing peasant food, perfectly balanced flavours and is utterly sublime when done right.

You get a bowl of fragrant beef broth, with plenty of rice noodles and paper-thin slices of rare beef for a certain amount of money. A side plate of beansprouts and lemon wedges is provided. The beef cooks quickly in the hot broth, which although flavourful, was not as full-bodied as I had hoped. The beef was deliciously tender, and overall, it was still one of the better phở I’ve had in Auckland.

M is addicted to the spare ribs rice noodle soup, the spare ribs are mildly spicy and tender.

Pork rice noodle soup, with generous shavings of roast pork in a pork-based broth.

Stir-fry chicken with vermicelli. This colourful salad of sorts comes with nước chấm sauce, the ubiquitous fish sauce-based dipping sauce.

We also had the Vietnamese spring roll deep-fried parcels of pork and vegetable, wrapped in cold lettuce leaves and dipped in garlic nước chấm sauce. Very moreish.

I was a bit disappointed with the jackfruit nectar; it was icy rather than a smoothie-like consistency. The traffic light, an iced concoction made with sweetened red beans, mung beans, jelly, chendol and coconut milk, is a delight.

I have been trying to find the most authentic Vietnamese food in Auckland since I had my binge in Brisbane. Vietnam Cafe is a worthy contender.

http://easyfoodhacks.blogspot.in/2011/11/vietnam-cafe-otahuhu-auckland.html
