Review The Hangi Shop - Otahuhu

From Sydney and came to NZ to try Maori food. Was a great experience. The owner or staff member was lovely. Enjoyed trying something different!

We searched all over New Zealand for a hangi and finally found it! The hangi flavor was so good! We got the pork and chicken (poaka and heihei miti) and started to eat our lunch inside. While there we were aggressively panhandled by a pretty scary local guy which made us decide to take our food and go. Hopefully that is not the norm.

Wanted to try Hangi since I heard about it, very difficult to come by unless you go to a maori experience, which can he pretty expensive, there used to be 2 shops in Auckland, but one closed down without notice, so this is now the only store. The food was fast, the service was good and it was a nice tasty meal, it lived up to its reputation, and although eating it at an experience place may be better! I felt that for the cost of about $NZ20 or £10 it was very much a better deal. Recommended

You'd be amazed eating here or take away. Service is absolutely welcoming feeling. Menu is fulfilling as expected being Maori or not. 💯percent. Gosh has been a very long time years since I last eaten Maori Boil Up. This is what I call it. Loved every moment brought back old memories childhood. That taste. Thank you Hangi House. Your hospitality is out of this world.

Work family had lunch here. My first time to be here. Excellent customer service, friendly and welcoming staff. Clean environment and so yummy food. We had pork hangi and a boil up. Big portion. Will definitely be back here 👍

Great food! Our favourite was brisket boil up

Been here more than a few times and the Hangi and Boil Up is always on point. The steamed pudding is also very nice. Jonah Lomu has even left a comment n autograph which is framed in the shop so that's all the convincing one may need to eat here. Highly recommended!!

I lived in NZ over 26 years and it’s quite sad that our tradition food aren’t easily accessible. Except that when we went Rotorua trip when I was young and tried hangi at the hotel with Maori show (not sure if it was even authentic) this was my first time eating boil ups. I loved every bit of it. Will definitely visit again and again, try hangi next time and even bring my non Maori friends too :)

Great place to try out hangi, but not sure how genuine it is, especially how they cook it. Service was good, and there is a toilet available at the back of the shop. Business was for sale when I was there

We were driving past and figured we will stop by and try some traditional maori food. The lady at the counter kindly explained to us the menu so we knew what to order. Hangi is wholesome and comforting. Must try if you are nearby.

Got chicken and pork Hangi meals and a pork boilup. Not bad, reminds me of stewed vegetables. Also got a loaf of rewena bread which is good with ourmate. Definitely try this place out to taste some traditional Maori food.

Nice place but I needed sauce with my hangi as it was rather bland and quite a small serving for $16 there was only one of each vege I thought there'd be 2 of each or more potato. The steamed pudding and fried bread were yummy though.

Have been here a few times. Boil up is nice but the hangi tastes boiled and the cabbage has no hangi flavor in my opinion. Im guessing its steamed. The steamed pudding is really good though.

First time going and it was a great experience, interior is nice and has a lot of Moarti art work around with plenty of seating. Staff were very friendly and food was quick to come out. I got the chicken and pork with Kumara , pumpkin eg. Chicken was lovely succulent with plenty of flavour while the pork was a bit to greasy and had a bit too much grissle for my liking. Price was 15$ for the lot which was reasonable for a small business and the portion I got was huge and filled me right up. Would definitely go back and highly recommend to friends. Chur

We have eaten here before without a problem however tonight we turned up 40 minutes prior to closing to be told that we can't eat in. Further more some of the items we wanted to order were no longer available. Personally, I feel that if a business advertises certain opening hours that they actually be available at those times without sending customers away especially if they have driven from more than half an hour away. I don't think I'll be going here again.

this place is behind the landmark monument. Had the pork hangi meal consisting the pumpkin, spuds n sweet spuds, cabbage and stuffing. This is very similar to a roast meal but everything is steam cooked to keep the traditional natural flavours but without the earthly fume/taste like in a real cook in ground hangi, meat was well cooked on bone to bits and tender too, maybe should put a rock inside steamer.

Went to the Hangi shop to get some food. Was really good! Yummy hangi that tastes authentic and is cooked well. A little bit pricey but the food preparation is alot so justifies the price. Definitely coming again.

Was not very happy with the hangi I recieved was barely anything in it and was quite expensive aswell. Was a huge disappointment and was quite dissatisfied.

The only one of it's kind in Auckland (that I know of). While the décor, service or the presentation is like a standard take away fish and chip shop and could have been better, the food doesn't disappoint at all. They serve some nice, tender and tasty hangi and its as good as a boil-up probably gets. Definitely recommend at least once.

Not as good as home, but still helps with the hangi/boil up craving. Considering the amount of time and effort that goes into preparing either, I think the prices are reasonable.

Awesome pork bones and water cress, hangi is nice and moist. Rewana with a slap of butter mommy. Mean as fried bread as well. love eating here

Living locally and after many years I finally tried this place just before there were closing and I felt like a good ol hangi. Didn't think it was that great for what I paid $14.50 at the time as its been a few years and ain't been back yet I drive past everyday.

The boil up is really yum! To die for. Definitely worth the drive wherever you come from. I had the brisket boil up and it was so yum! I waited to get home to eat it and it was the perfect temperature to chow down!!
Also had the pork and chicken hangi which was really yum! The stuffing is to die for. So glad I also got fried bread which was so yum and I used it to soak the juices from the boil up.
Really worth your money they give you a decent amount. It's so hot and fresh.

Really good hangi, chicken is juicy and is dusted with thyme, lamb is tender, pork is pretty good too. Everything is nice and smokey. Stuffing is AMAAAAAAZING. Can't stop, wont stop, thinking about the stuffing. Takeaway was quick and easy, pretty big portions.

Yum, I love Hangi and crave it from time to time so i was very pleased when I came across the Hangi Shop. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. I can't say enough about my meal. The meat was tender, stuffing very tasty & the veges were cooked to perfection. I ordered a steam pudding with custard to finish off my experience, which was moist and as a steamed pudding should be. I will definitely be going back and think I will try the vegetarian option next time. .

The email order was received, and after a few changes, I got a quick response, and the food was ready when I came to pick it up. It was delicious, tender succulent, tasty, the stuffing was one of the best I have ever tasted. Highly recommend. Everything is cooked to perfection. Their Rewena bread was still warm.

I cannot recommend the Hangi Shop enough. We needed catering for our staff Christmas party and we had left it too late to use our first option.
However the team at the Hangi Shop delivered a fantastic meal, at a great price. And everyone was so impressed.
So if you are looking for a easy and delicious way to cater for a group, don't look past the Hangi Shop
