Review Reds Cafe - Otaki

Edward Wong
Paid NZ$15.60 for a cup of latte (NZ$4.80), a cup of mocha (NZ$5.80) and a plate of assorted cakes (NZ$5). Drinks were good. Cakes were tasty but very sweet. Service was friendly and efficient. They brought the drinks to our table. Ambience was relaxing. Can park car by the roadside.

A sweet cafe, ideal for a quick bite on the road. Close to the old State Highway 1 through Otaki. Great coffee, with quick service and a great selection of cabinet food covering a wide variety of dietary needs.

Nice cafe, ample space inside and out, lovely cakes and full cafe menu. Great find!

Go there regularly when in Otaki. Not our only haunt for lunch but right up there. Food very tasty and well priced. Good portions.

Your basic suburban cafe. Feta and spinach filo with side salad was tasty and salad was fresh and zesty. Coffee was okay. Slightly expensive but a great place to take grandma on an outing from the rest home.

Otaki is a good stopping point in general. But you can treat yourself even better. Reds Cafe has the greatest atmosphere to relax in Otaki. I ordered something they don't have in a menu and have got everything I've ordered made beautifully. Fast service with a smile, clean and tidy, delicious food - everything you can wish for. Thank you Reds Cafe!!!💖

Totally endorse previous review. Will never go back and will advise others not to.Booked a table for family occasion well in advance. Had to repeat myself 3 x to get wine order understood, to then have wrong wine served (too late for me to send back as another at table had started pouring). Waited 40 minutes for first 3 orders (of 7)-cold chips. Complained about delay-told they were busy couldn't help it. Waited another 30minutes to be told fish had changed from terakihi to gurnard. Then another 15 minutes for fish n chip order-about 50 grams of fish. Coleslaw very poor-careless- effort. Another 10 minuets for final 2 orders-of course all others had eaten. 2 mushroom in floury tasteless mushroom dish. Chicken and bacon sandwich cold. Sister complained to indifferent duty manager who said would pass on to chef (yeah right). A totally underwhelming effort-we all left angry, felt ripped off, totally spoilt our family occasion. I wanted a pie afterwards. I wouldn't rate a 1 unless I had to, to get an opportunity to make this review.

Family visited Reds over Queens Birthday weekend for brunch. Main problems were timeliness and staff attitudes. Coffees came out OK, but an hour after our booking food was nowhere to be seen. Asked about it and staff were disinterested and dismissive. Understand new management took over recently but seems mostly same staff as before. A server was then rude at the table. We have been to Reds a number of times before and it has ranged from OK to average. This visit it was poor. We will ensure we avoid Reds and take our business to the customer focused Otaki cafes in the future.

We went to Otaki today 28 Dec 2019 to celebrate a 65th birthday. We placed the order prior to 12:30 pm.
We chose Red cafe for our celebration lunch. My wife chose the Bacon and Avocado special

while I chose the Red's All day breakfast. We also chose orange drinks and coffee.

Drinks arrived in a timely manner and then we waited, and waited and waited for our meals.

Our daughter joined us @ 12:35 and placed her order around 12:40 - her meal arrived and was finished and we were still waiting for our meals.

We saw others who arrived after us get their meals and then finish them and depart.

After 35 minutes I went up to the counter and was told that our meals would come out in time and that
we should wait our turn. The person in charge talked me down and did not listen.

When the meals did arrive (after 45 minutes) the Bacon and Avocado special had no Bacon on the plate and was cold.
We explained that my wife was on time sensitive medication and had waited well past her time when she should have eaten. The response was that our type of order takes 30 minutes to prepare - we had waited over 45 minutes for food that was sub-standard.

My big breakfast had a hash that was so crisp that I could hardly cut it. The mushrooms turned out to

be an overcooked mushroom (singular).

In summary the two meals were extremely overpriced at $40 for the two not mention our daughters Fettuccine
which was also cold and was more like soup and she struggled to eat it.

My partner and I eat out regularly and on Saturday we chose to go to this cafe for breakfast/brunch. It was approx 12.15pm. the cafe had plenty of empty tables and they were not busy. My partner is a relatively large eater and my self small to medium. We were met by a very polite young woman on the counter , On the way in I asked what the $12 daily specials were as they have this painted on their front window.. She didnt know what they were and asked the barista who pointed to a blackboard in front of the counter...I read what was on there and again asked what the $12 specials were as none of the specials included a $12 special....& everything on that board was dearer than $12. ;The young woman said it was school holidays, I then pointed out they should cover their front window as it was false advertising......It was at this stage the barista screamed out it was there prerogative to alter the menu as they sort fit... Well I have met some rottweilers in my life but this person was the worst female dog that I have ever encountered, She had no personality and was ruining a good business, by her attitude hostility. I asked to speak to the owner, and she just started laughing at me/ us.. My partner got upset and we left. Went along the road to KIss and Bake Up and had an amazing lunch..

To the cow of a Barista who thought it was OK to abuse us and made us feel like crap.. Shame on you.... To the business owner I would welcome your feed back , and invite you to contact me.. We used to eat atleast once every 2 weeks at your establishment.. At this stage we hope your business dies and fails like so many others in Otaki..

Had lunch with a friend on Saturday. Service was friendly & quick, and the cafe was clean and tidy. The coffee was good. My BLAT had good points - the bread was very nice, and the tomato was fresh. But the avocado was brown mush and there were numerous bits of slimy green rotted lettuce mixed in with the fresh lettuce. The bacon was OK, but not cooked enough to make it crispy. So overall it was a mixed bag, and I didn't eat all of my meal - the lettuce and avocado stayed on the plate.

We went to Red’s as a party of 6 including 2 young kids. Despite being quite a peak time, we found a table.

The table was clean and clear of dishes.

One of the meals we had was the seared lamb and roast vegetables. The lamb was good and a generous selection of vegetables. It also came with potato roasties which I guess could be classified as vegetables.

The kids (both under 10) shared a single "Chicken nuggets and chips" which was able for both.

Service was pretty fast given how busy it was.

Lunch here 2 days ago. Meals are great value and portions are massive. Coffee, really good. Pork belly, highly recommend, super tasty! Next time we'll save room for cake.

Has to be one of the best steak meals I have ever had. I don't normally eat entrees but glad I chose to this time. Definitely worth every penny. Friendly staff who are attentive

The eggs benedict with salmon was very generous, like the other breakfast options. Good coffee, and although nothing special, Reds is worthwhile for a filling, quality breakfast.

My wife and I went for early evening dinner last night. Friendly staff and good service. My mussels and Seafood Risotto were very good indeed. My wife was disappointed with aspects of the chicken dish. It was beautifully served but my wife felt that the spinach was old and quite stringy. She was also a little disappointed in the chicken. However, 10 out of 10 for the dessert! One more small point, the menu on their website could do with being updated. Seafood Risotto $23.50 on the web. In reality, $30.00.
