Review Gengy's - Palmerston North

Superb food -great for kids, especially fussy eaters as they get to choose from a great selection. Starters mains and puddings included. Food is all fresh. And graded pricing scale is perfect when you have kids. Will be back again next time in palmy.

Quite a unique experience in Palmy. Buffet style. Choose the ingredients/sauce and food is freshly stir-fried. Questionable hygiene (especially at the dessert bar) but they were extremely busy with lots of kids. I would suggest the owner to oversee the hygiene and the operation instead of helping at cooking/cashier. Would definitely go back.

Had a great night there. Food was yum. You get a bowl, fill it up with whatever you want, then take it to the chefs, and they cook it in front of you while you wait. Thought that was cool. It's about $30-$40 all you can eat. They have all sorts of beverages to choose from. I enjoyed a cocktail called illusion 😀. That was yum too. So go and enjoy people.

This is not a fancy restaurant, this is self service, quantity over quality food setting. As long as you understand this, you will enjoy yourself, the meals are only as good as you make them so if you don't like your meal, that's on you. Very good for family's not so much romantic couples.

This was my first visit here and to see so many people lined up at the doors before they opened was surprising. I have never seen people line up to get into a restaurant before. The food was amazing and they know how to cater for large groups. Hats off to the 3 guys cooking

My daughter specifically requested dining here for her birthday. Pricing calculator is available on their website so you don't get any nasty surprises and prices are scaled for children by age. I suggest you book ahead of time, especially for large groups. The restaurant can be a little loud. Meals are all you can eat and water is provided, but other drinks are extra. If you have not eaten at this style of buffet before, you queue to fill a bowl at the buffet, with meat and vegetables and your choice of flavoured oils, sauces and condiments, and these are griddle cooked while you wait and handed to you on a plate for you to return to your table. This allows you to select only the delicious things you want to eat in a stirfry style, and you can keep going back to try different flavours. Service staff were efficient at removing used plates and always asked politely before doing so. There are a range of sides and nibbles (great for fussy kids who only want nibbles and nuggets), and some soups with optional rolls and butter. I found the chicken & mushroom soup really tasty. The dessert bar has limited options, which are mostly ice cream with various toppings, but there is always the option of pancakes. If you have 3 adults dining at full cost, it's $1 on birthdays. Check their website for full pricing and conditions.

Excellent food as always. Great service, friendly staff, delicious pancakes. This is one of my favourite places to eat with friends - it's less formal than a normal sit down dinner and easy to catch up in.

Great place for groups when you don't know food preferences! Can only blame yourself if you don't like the flavour of your dish!

Came here for the first time this evening and was very impressed with the options, everything was so fresh. I had a variety of dinner options ant topped it off with a ice cream pancake with fruit salad which was simply perfect. Cocktails went down to easy and we could of had them coming all evening.

You choose your own ingredients from the large selection of Meat, vegetables, oils, sauces & extras. It's then cooked up on a hotplate for you. Pre-cooked foods such as fish, chips, chicken wings & soup are available as is the ingredients to make your own salad or burger. Great place to go if you have a group of people with differing tastes in food!

Amazing place and nice food. Great options to get creative with flavour and meat.

The food and selection is good. It would be helpful if certain things were labelled gluten free or dairy free etc....
My big disappointment was although our group was large (probably spending about $500 ) & in spite of us all paying, they STILL didn't believe us & accompanied us to the door! NOT COOL!!!

Service was quite nice. There was only us and another pair in the place which made it a bit awkward as the played lalaby music while eating. Sauces were out of place so you weren’t sure what sauce you were putting on. Compared to Auckland there was not much selection with meat and the veges etc. The instant food like hot chips and chicken wings were really good and fresh so that was a plus

They do an Early bird special between 5pm-7pm which is a little bit cheaper than the normal price!!! Clean and the staff appear to be friendly enough!!! Pretty much choose your meats, vegetables, oils and sauces with either noodles, rice or chips, then take it up to be cooked!!! They also have a little area with chips/nuggets/wedges and a salad bar though Im not sure if Id recommend the salads I tried it and didnt like it but maybe you will am sure you or the kids would love the nuggets and chips etc!!! Pancakes and ice cream for desert!! Good value for your money. Ive been a few times and will definately be back!!!!

Kind of overrated in my opinion. All of the food tastes the same. Just an oily stir fry, which is good sometimes. The dessert pancakes aren't great, and it's fairly highly priced for what it is, hence the lower rating. But the food is fine and the atmosphere is neat.

Very casual Ambience. It was busy on the night we took family. All of the food bays were kept topped and food was fresh. Plenty of sauces to choose from.Staff... Not a lot of input here as it is self service. Staff at the fryer could interact more with customers but do not.Not enough desserts to choose from. Pancakes and ice cream only.Drinks are over priced.Over all experience.... Nice enough place. The kids thought it was great as they could choose many different items to try, Not some where I would return to though.

Absolutely love the restaurant! How they cook the selections were very cool. Lol my meal turned out pretty tasteless but I already knew. Their entree and desserts were pretty nice. Overall I would come again next time!

Have been to Gengys three times now and it never fails to satisfy. The staff are friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The food is really fantastic. Love the seafood chowder, green beans with garlic and the fried chicken wings. Have finally mastered the way to make my own creation extra tasty...marinated meat, sesame and garlic oil and - the key ingredients...AT LEAST a teaspoonful each of garlic and ginger...yum, yum!!!:) The pancakes are fab too and a great way to top off a fantastic meal. It's really reasonably priced, super value for a fun night out. Excellent for kids too as they get to choose exactly what they want to eat (good for picky eaters) and it's only $3 + $1 per year of age i.e. a 10 year old eats for only $13! Also birthday girls n boys with ID get their meal for only $1 when dining with 3 other adults! Clearly word is spreading as the restaurant was three-quarters full on a Tuesday night. Will definitely be back:)

Dined here tonight. Food was great, nice clean place with a very nice atmosphere, very attentive friendly helpful staff. Happy for us to dine there even though no booking and we walked in off the street. Thank you, we will visit again.

Finally a Gengys in Palmerston North! I have visited the Tauranga branch many times and when in Palmy always a must visit. The Pancakes are my favourite and the kids always get a laugh of the Mickey Mouse pancakes. Always eat too much at Gengys for a reasonable price but definitely worth it with soup, salad, meat, vege and pancakes and ice cream available, too good!

Had an absolutely beautiful dinner. First time we had tried this sort of concept and the staff were so helpful showing us what to do and all the different options that were available. Will definitely be back with more people. Boo to the PNCC for taking so long to give them the liquor licence.

It's been about 20 years since I last had Mongolian BBQ, and I had fond memories and high expectations. Gengy's didnt disappoint. Incredibly friendly staff, one of whom escorted us to the buffet and explained how the system worked. We were checked up ona few times but not in an intrusive way, and while we were all off getting food a new carafe of iced water appeared on teh table.

The food was great too. The salad/entree section was a little strange, with some Asian options and some very Western ones. Soup: amazing. Green beans with garlic: a must try, I had two giant helpings. The restaurant provides a helpful recipe guide to sauces and seasonings for those unfamiliar with the flavours, but the concept is pretty simple. Choose some meat, add vegetables, add noodles if you like, add oil (you can choose which one, it's needed to cook the food but you have sevearl options), choose sauces, choose seasoning, take it to the chef, and enjoy watching it being cooked. And it IS fun to watch the food cook. I'm not sure how the chef work around the hotplate constantly, it is incredibly hot and the food cooks super fast. Then you can add sides: a mixture of Asian and Western options. I enjoyed the fired noodles and spring rolls, and the chicken received high praise too.

You can eat as much as you want, I had three helpings, plus entrees, and was plenty full up after that. You have complete control of not only your poerrtion size, but what actually goes into your meal. If you want to eat nothing but noodles and meat you can, but there is a wide variety of vegetables. I tried an all vegetable creation, and really enjoyed it.

The whole concept is really fun, and the staff seem to really enjoy what they do. it's family friendly as well: one chef went totally aove and beyond to make some children Mickey Mouse shaped crepes for dessert. Did I mention they make crepes to order which you can garnish with icecream and fruit and sauce from the dessert bar? I was too full of BBQ to try one, but they were by all accounts delicious, and made right there on the spot.

Everything was well laid out, clean, tidy, the staff well presented. The chairs were comfy, and there is plenty of room to navigate the buffet. The only thing letting Gengy's down is the PNCC: they applied for their liquor license over a month ago, and still haven't got it yet. Shame on you Palmerston Norht City Council, you're stopping one of the best new restaurants in the city from being incredible, instead of simply great.

Yeah, I'm going back. We all are, and we're bringing friends.
