Review Thai Orchid Restaurant - Palmerston North

The food was amazing, and the waiters were so nice. It was lovely to see that they stuck to a Thai tradition. The place was very clean. Would 100% go again. (The food in the image below is ever so slightly eaten, by me of course)

Always had a great time here. We order takeaways once a week from Thai Orchid and eat in every so often. Our meals have always been spot on - like in 2 years + (that's well over 100 meals). Dining in, I suggest calling ahead on peak nights as it's quite a popular spot for those that enjoy genuine Thai in Palmy. Meals are very reasonably priced for what you get. If you're looking for a new place to try or you're just a visitor to Palmy, give this place a shot - you won't be disappointed.

If you are short on time, don't read on just go there. We had a fabulous experience! Everything was faultless. The environment gives an immediate feeling of the east. Spotlessly clean in restrooms and the eating area. Lots of red and gold colours. We were welcomed and served throughout by friendly, happy staff who were attentive without hovering. They also made ordering easy with great advice and explanations from an extensive menu. We ordered four entrees which we requested on one plate so we could share amongst the four of us. Then for different mains, also to share. All the meals were beautifully cooked and presented. Each complimented the other and our taste buds went into overdrive. It really felt that our meals were prepared with passion. It was a great night out and I can't emphasise enough, this restaurant went the extra mile to provide the best food, service, and experience. I have every confidence in recommending them to you.

My parents went here. They said the food was good. Except it looked like the green curry had green food coloring in it. As the colour was a weird bright green. However they said the soup, specially made crispy pork and pad Thai were very nice.

Went here for a meal while spending the night in palmerston north. Extremely handy to motel and was nice to be able to walk to dinner. Service is top notch and the food was served very quickly indeed. Price was very reasonable. I would definitely dine here again and recommend others to try it

I have strict dietary restrictions and the thing I ordered did not comply and the manager was extremely rude to me about it. This has happened two times now. I cant have meat and my dish had small pieces of it. The first time this happened I accepted my servers apology, paid and left politely, I was mad but I was like its fine people make mistakes. It happened again yesterday and this time I talked to the manager very politely and she was soo aggressive and rude I was shocked and I was out with a colleague it really ruined my night. Also when they explained why there was meat in my dish their reason was the utensils they used wernt properly cleaned.. thats so gross! BOTH TIMES! Never going back again FOR SURE!

Ordered takeways which I picked up from the store whilst back in Palmerston North visiting family. The food was delicious. The pad thai is always my favourite from this restaurant, and it did not disappoint. We also had a red curry chicken (was meant to be green, but not bothered!), penang pork curry and the sir fry vegetables. All meals were of good quality and great flavour. Highly recommend!

Thai Orchard is set up in such a great way - it's the perfect setting for whatever you are there for, whether it be a date or a work function.

Their food is quite good, though very pricey. I ordered the Tom Yum Vegetable soup. I loved how many vegetables were in it but the spice level was disappointing (I asked for medium-hot and it barely had any heat to it). Also, I ordered the roti which was amazing!! If I go there again I will most definitely be ordering that as a side.

I expected rice to be included for the curry meals seeing as how it expensive it was, and at that I expected the quantity of rice to be bigger.

The staff were absolutely lovely and were quick to accommodate to our needs

Overall, it is not somewhere you would go for a cheap meal but it is very nice all the same

lovely décor and Ambience. STAFF are friendly and nicely dressed. . We had three different curries and the whole fish, all were nicely prepared and cooked. Food was good but no wow factor as far as flavours go. Found another Thai Restaurant with the wow factor.

The Chicken I ordered was not a form of chicken of any variety I have experienced previously. Tried discussing with waitress. No further understanding was acquired. How the chef could serve this rubber is beyond comprehension. That said, the roti, the various spices, and the service was good. Highly recommend they find a new chicken supplier.

Had takeaways last night, it was Friday and we couldn't be bothered cooking. We ordered phad Thai and Thai green curry with rice (which was an extra $2.5!?!) The phad Thai noodles were tasty but the chicken was rubbery. It was OK and the reason why I haven't given a 1. As the green curry was like milky weirdness dyed green, the beef was tasty but was all I pretty much ate especially how the rice which cost extra seemed like it had been sitting in the fridge and reheated for our order. 10/10 would not go again.

My partner and I ate in the Thai Orchid last night, I can't say we had a meal as we could hardly eat any of it, the stuffed mushrooms were deep fried in old oil and were soggy, the satay chicken skewers were stewed and the satay was runny and the fish cakes were rubbery and tiny. The mains were red duck curry, completely unedible as it was just a bowl of hot slop with lumps of thick grizzly rubbery skin/fat and barely any meat, it got sent back immediately, for $29.50 I was expecting divine, boy was I wrong, even the rice was luke warm and over sticky. My partner ordered sizzling beef, indeed it came out sizzling but the beef was again, battered in old fat and very un appetizing. When we complained the waitress said yes I understand, you are right, it's very fatty, we are very busy tonight but you will still have to pay, we refused and insisted the duck dish and mushrooms got taken off. We eat out a lot around NZ and this rates as one of the worst meals ever, definitely the worst ever Thai food, it was also the most expensive I would not go back and would urge future patrons to take there dollars elsewhere, unless you have a palate of steel and a stomach of iron. The only positive note was the pleasant waitress, this place does Thai food and restaurants a huge disservice.

Our experience could only be described as mediocre which's unusual because we've been coming here (on & off) for quite some time. We arrived and were greeted promptly. The usual routine of water carafe and menu were not out of ordinary plus the restaurant wasn't that overly busy, even takeaway seemed normal. We waited for a staff to come over to take our orders. I went up to the counter but a waitress was too busy taking orders for takeaway and there were no other staff to be found. It took 15 minutes until a waitress came over - now that's ridiculous. So we decided to get takeaway instead and there was no apology.
The price range was outrageous for an average Thai restaurant; from now on we'll be going back to Chada Thai and maybe, Thai House.

This was the worst Thai food experience I've had. We ordered a Chili fish dish and explicitly told the waitress that we wanted a spicy dish. When the fish arrived it was extremely bland and dry. The waiter was also quite rude, simply dropping the bowl of rice on the table without even a smile. On the plus side, the waitress was very nice. We usually go to Chada Thai where the decor may not be as 'upmarket', but both the service and food are a whole lot better-and after this experience, we'll be sticking to Chada Thai.

Thai Orchid has been our local Thai restaurant over the past 6 years. We enjoy the food and the staff are very welcoming! Thanks for having us and sharing your lovely food.

This is by far my favourite place to eat. Their menu is great and service is always wonderful. I often opt for delivery and it's always quick and still hot. Only $4 delivery charge too!
Highly recommended.
The only downside is the parking... it's just in an odd location so it's not terribly convenient to any carparks, but it's not of great concern given the quality of the food and staff.

I went here with my girlfriend a few weeks ago. Ordered the Tom Yum soup hot, but was not hot at all. Also got the Pad Thai which had near to no chopped nuts that there usually is at other places. Rating would be much lower, had it not been for the wonderful young (not too sure if she was Thai though?) lady that served us. She was a delight, and was very polite, thus making the experience much more enjoyable than it was. Undecided whether or not to come again.

This was the worst Thai I have ever tasted. I ate only a small portion of my beef curry. It looked like there was some soft 'beef' with a generic gravy, then the curry sauce partly mixed in as an afterthought. The Tom Yum was foul too (how could you mess that up?). The meal was not cheap either.
On the positive side, the staff were pleasant and attentive, and the place was quite lively.

Went to their takeaway side and we ordered green curry chicken, red curry pork, fried noodles with pork, and chilli chicken. All were cooked to perfection however thought the servings were quite small. The dishes nice lovely flavours, veges were delicious, and the girls who served me were helpful.

This is the worst thai myself and partner have ever had. We dined as a large group for someones birthday. The staff were so unorganised! Some people didnt recieve their entrees while others had already eaten theirs and were being served mains. We had to ask for the other entrees. Next some people didnt get any rice with their mains and had to ask for that too. Some people didnt get cuttlery and one person got served something they didnt order. Some of the group refused to pay for part of the meal. Partner said his meal was the worst tasting thai hes ever had and mine was very average. The staff did apologise but I would not return

This was the worst Thai meal my wife and I have ever had! From the lukewarm rice and the undercooked curry puffs to the soggy batter on the Singapore Steak and the Ginger Chicken (which looked and tasted nothing like chicken)
it was terrible!

Friendly service. My friend ordered the ham and cheese spring rolls....not nice! but apart from that it was a nice meal

After being spoilt with great Thai restaurants in Wellington where I have recently moved from, I was delighted to find Thai Orchard Restaurant.
Even though the menu was extensive and I could have chosen a number of delicious meals, was in a fussy mood and I wanted a salad but I also wanted duck. So the staff talked to the chef who made up a meal that wasn't on the menu, and it was fantastic.
Great atmosphere, lovely staff, fabulous food and great prices. Will be going again!!

Mediocre food. We left most of it.

Absolutely fantastic! great food, great service & great prices & it's BYO! Decor is lovely and the staff are polite and attentive. Had the best green curry I've ever had (other than when I was in Thailand of course)
Ended up going back the next night with a group of friends with rave reviews from everyone.
The best Thai in Palmerston North
