Review Beijing Duck Panmure - Panmure

can’t say anything bad about it because we got lunch special takeaway for 11$ - beef/ lamb potato stew with rice! Big portion and amazingly cheap price, the taste was not bad as well! Can you buy any proper meal with under 15$ nowadays in AKL? 👍 have already recommended to a few colleagues and friends ~ sharing is caring, right?

The interior is a bit shabby, but this is a must visit for Beijing duck (Peking duck) lovers if you're in Auckland. The chef is from a famous restaurant in China, and wheels out the duck to carve in front of you. Super reasonably priced at only $60 for a whole duck! Note: Phone to book the duck beforehand, or it's about a 45min - 1 hour wait if you're ordering the duck on the spot. The spicy chicken dish is also really tasty, definitely recommended.

Authentic tasty Beijing Duck Restaurant. You are best to reserve a table beforehand, as you will need to reserve a duck. The duck is juicy and not dry like other places. Their egg spring onion pancake is a must also. Other dishes are ok. You can also ask for duck soup, with refills. Service is always excellent.

Food was good and affordable, service was good! Make sure you preorder the Beijing duck before you head into the restaurant , overall very satisfied, definitely recommend!

Great portion and inexpensive.

The Beijing Duck has to be ordered well in advance. The skin may not be as crispy as other places but the duck in its entirety is tasty. Nicely carved up, quite moist and very filling indeed!
李一航
Very good duck, done traditionally and right in front of customer. Very good portion too. Recommend

Call and order the famous Beijing duck 45 mins before you get there.
Jack Mercer
Love their cheap lunch menu, beef brisket on rice for $8 it is soooo good you can't beat it!!
Rachel Barker
You don't get more authentic thN this place. Great food for low price. Don't be fooled by how it looks. Worth a visit. Make sure to book your duck in advance if there for dinner!
yswysc
Good dishes and nice tastes.
Kiki
Not a fancy place to eat but casual comfortable and cheap and tasty Peking duck with huge portions, more like roast duck but feeds quite a lot of people! Don’t really order the other dishes as the duck is the star. $48 and need to order in advance.
Dennis Zhang
The duck isn't bad and it's really well priced. Also like their assortment of vegetables of pastry dishes like the egg/spring onion pancakes. Definitely not the nicest decor but nothing to complain about. It's not exactly what you'll get at a top Beijing restaurant but it's a good alternative for your cravings when away from China.

The Beijing Duck here is the real deal. This is my favourite cuisine and the duck at this restaurant is as close as it gets to the original served at Beijing Quanjude.<br/><br/>The five star review is only for the duck. The other dishes here are mediocre and I would recommend just getting the duck (including pancakes, sauce and toppings) as a takeaway.
David W
I strongly agreed with previous reviews of this restaurant that the female owner was horrible. She asked us to finish earlier even there were many empty tables and the closing time was 2 hours away.
Amy
Love its BBQ spicy fish. Beijing roasted duck is also recommended. Let us eat very full. I recommend it because it's reasonably priced.I think I will go there often. Don't forget to call 40 minutes in advance to book a roast duck.

One of the best Beijing Duck restaurants in Auckland, good portion and nice taste! Really good balance between crispy skin and tender juicy meat! Will definitely come back

Not the flashiest but they do pretty good peking duck, served right in front of your table. $48, make sure you order in advance. Mains generous in portion and quite reasonable in price. We ordered whole fish, fish mustard vege soup, green beans, eggplants, spare ribs, black pepper beef and spring onion pancake as well. Spend over $100, you get complimentary pork cutlet mains. Nine people and we only spend $210. Full to the brim and we get to takeaway some for lunch for two the next day. Friendly and fast service.
Luz !
It meets the expectations of an authentic Beijing duck. Tried other beff meals as well and 2 kinds of pancake. Personally I am huge fan, but it was alright.

BAD EXPERIENCE. I ordered three classic Chinese dishes here, and none of them is good. To be honest, I dont think this place could be considered as "Chinese restaurant", because all the dishes taste totally different from what I had ate in China. The duck is too dry and the pancake is too thick. The waitress here is not friendly as well.

The Peking duck dish is a rip off!   Even a one star rating is too good for it! The actual duck is much smaller than what is shown on the photo or the duck displayed on their counter top. We were fooled into thinking that was how it would look like.We paid for a whole duck, but we were only given some cut pieces from a small part of the whole duck served with a few pieces of pancakes and veges. The rest of the duck were never seen again. We thought it will be served in the duck soup as we were told that the duck will be served in two ways. When the duck soup was served (it was only served after a long while when we asked about it), it was just some bland water soup with no duck meat or taste. Tasted more like powdered stuff.Their duck dish was not fragrant at all and the service of this restaurant is terrible. This is the worst Beijing duck in town. Most restaurants serve the whole duck and include another dish cooked with the leftover duck. We felt very short changed by this restaurant.

Honestly the best peking duck I’ve had in New Zealand. The chef came out and cut the duck in front of us and even put together some pancakes for us. Absolutely amazing food and service!
Geoffreymairs
This place is insanely awesome. I can't believe I've only just found this restaurant. I will never go anywhere else for duck in Auckland. Get into it ppl. :-)

Nice restaurant near panmure roundabout. Famous for their Peking duck dish wish you need time pre order otherwise the wait is around 45 minutes on a quite night or over an hour on a busy weekend evening. We didn’t pre order one so tried other dishes. The Sichuan spicy fish was yummm but the sizzling beef was strictly okay.<br/>Pancake was good. Good portion size as well.<br/>Rating breakdown as below:<br/>Food- 3.5/5<br/>Service - 4/5<br/>Cleanliness - 3.5/5<br/>Ambience- 3.5/5<br/>Overall- 3.5/5<br/>Will comeback n try their Peking duck next time

Had it again after a few years.<br/>The Beijing roasted duck is still very good, served and performed on the table.<br/>The “duck bone soup” is tasteless and doesn’t really look like a soup. There’s no more veggie like before.<br/>Service is now somewhat to complain.

3.5/5 Taste<br/>3/5 Display <br/>4.5/5 Quantity <br/>3/5 Customer Service<br/><br/>Beijing Duck Restaurant that serves roast duck<br/><br/>Ordered 2 beijing ducks fried rice and pancakes. They weren's really beijing duck, more like roast duck. Portion was great comparing with other restaurants, didnt really complain about the taste either as there was more than enough to feed 4. <br/>Complimentary pork cutlets were quite nice, service was a bit slow though, called in and the owner picked up the phone speaking Chinese, told me to come at 6:30, food was ready at 6:45.<br/>Recommened if keen for cheap pekking duck.<br/>
Billie
awful service! the waitress not even look at you when ordering food and can't be bother to answer some questions. Food was ok if you're not compared to bejing standard.
Sherry Zhang
Beijing duck is always nice here, But the service is so bad, especially the female owner. She looks at you as if you are a criminal when you only ask a basic question. So not a great feeling.

When you go to a Chinese restaurant there are a couple of "norms" to keep in mind;<br/>1. You pay for food not service. This is the first rule my Chinese in laws taught me and holds true in 90% of cases. This place is no different but does have a good menus with pictures and English to the non Chinese speaking or reading.<br/>2. A Chinese restaurant full of Chinese is worth checking out. This is accurate for many ethnicities but I have found that Chinese punters follow chefs from place to place... they are discerning in this regard to an extent as a European I didn't see before. This place was full at 630 on a Monday with local Chinese. Enough said...<br/>3. If the flavours are too powerful beware over salting or msg. I found the flavours very subtle & pleasant and no msg apparent. The duck especially isn't as flavoured as others I have had but we enjoyed that. <br/><br/>Overall we enjoyed this place. Get the Peking duck with heaps of pancakes (unlike most they give you a big stack) with a hot pot and the spring onion pancake...👍

I was recommended by friends so come here have a try. But I found the service was very bad. And the so call duck soup is just serve us the water after boil the duck. Taste awful!!!! Never go to this restaurant any more!
Tsping91
Bad service bad food bad bad bad bad bad... Zomato please properly review this place!!! I will recommend not to come here ever ever ever.. waste of money. The Beijing duck is worse than any duck ever might as well get the roast duck on rice. No taste no right texture!!! When ask question they just walk away and give that long face and answered us very badly... for those who rate this place good please do not cheat other customers to come in here.. if I can rate negative I will give -100

High rating for Beijing duck restaurant! Fabulous food and nice service! Need to pre-order if you want Peking duck and you will get the duck pretty fast after you get seated. Will definitely come back!
Lawrence Mikkelsen
The good: The food. The actual Peking (Beijing) duck was fabulous - expertly carved so we got lots of meat, although the pancake-to-duck ratio was probably a little off and when we asked for a half-dozen more pancakes we were told it was another 20, or nothing. The sides were also pretty good - we got pork and fried tofu and a large pancake.<br/><br/>The bad: Possibly it's a cultural/language thing, but the service was pretty unfriendly, and it was difficult to attract the attention of wait staff. Having not been there before the actual ordering process was quite confusing. We'd ordered the duck in advance, but weren't sure how many sides we should order, and no one seemed very interested in helping us.<br/><br/>Would definitely recommend for the food, but expect a noisy and slightly confusing dining experience.

Came here for their Peking duck because it is one of the cheaper places! I guess you get what you pay since it was pretty Average Peking duck. What I do like is that the chef actually carves up the duck by your table. <br/><br/>Peking duck normally can come in two courses where the meat is used to make another dish, but here it is carved with meat and skin both on so only one main dish and we got soup Instead for the second course. It was so Gross as tasted like duck feathers in water. 😖<br/><br/>But we also ordered other dishes and were good and cheap.
Michelle Hwang
Average level quality and taste, price was also fair. One special thing there was that their Chef showed duck cutting to diners in front of the table.
®-®-©hin....
They talk themselves up here with photos&comment"s on the wall, but their star product (peaking duck)a bit of a let Down....,sure the the novelty of having the duck carved up at your table, but its a bland product they produce flavorless duck and lacking the crispness of the duck skin which is the norm for this product ....and,other items on offer no better, oily and tasteless with just the salt"n"spicy scampi dish being up to standard , but overall. ...a let down here....<br/><br/>

Awesome food!<br/>I enjoyed the roasted duck and the duck soup!<br/>Went here with my family for new years.<br/>It was exciting to see the duck!<br/>Will definitely come back again

came here together with 5 friends to enjoy peking ducks. previous reviews seem favourable, unfortunately i was wrong. service was very very slow, foods were coming out also very very slow. food quality or taste = very very average. i have had way better duck at other places - and all the other 5 foods we ordered are also below average - i think my normal take-outs places can make better foods. the male assistant were very very rude and unhelpful. he started asking my friend who is an asian guy who could speak mandarin as to why he didn't speak mandarin to him ? he asked him if he was ashamed of speaking chinese ? WTF ?? seriously ??? what kind of restaurant is this ? if the food are that good then i supposed he could afford to be that rude and arrogant. but they're foods are below standard and this was their attitude ? seriously guys.. if you want a decent chinese foods, take your money somewhere else.

Came for dinner on Sunday, as expected the Peking duck was delicious and good value for money. However the other dishes we had were very oily.

Came here with 5 people last night. It was pretty busy for a wednesday night which was good to see. We ordered a fair few dishes, including a large savoury pancake, tofu, a few others and of course the Peking Duck. The chef came to the table to cut it in front of you which was cool. They then gave us little pancakes and duck sauce to go with it. I'm told the duck there is excellent for the price. The chef apparently worked in some famous restaurant in China. The food was pretty good overall, although it was all pretty salty. The waiter was absolutely useless though.

Spontaneous search for Peking Duck landed us in Beijing Duck Restaurant - we arrived with no booking, seated and served tea and menus within a couple of minutes - great start! <br/><br/>We had a quick browse through the menu but decided the 2 course Peking duck would be sufficient... We placed our order only to be told you must pre order the duck before you arrive otherwise it's a 40 minute wait.... <br/><br/>We decided to wait. <br/><br/>The lady, I assume owner, insisted we ordered some food to snack on while we were waiting. So we had the jellyfish and cucumber salad and the egg and spring onion pancake. We also asked for the second course - duck soup - as it was remade. <br/><br/>Ahhhhh, the jellyfish was yum! The balance of crunch and freshness from the cucumber and the punchy sweetness of the dressing was yum! Totally recommend that. The pancake was pretty standard. I have to say it was huge for $5 though!!! The soup was a complete disaster. We both had a spoon each and decided it was inedible. Literally duck bones simmered in water for hours w a tiny bit of salt.......... <br/><br/>35 minutes later, we had finished our table food and the duck finally came! Steaming and fresh, the chef carved it onto a plate and we pancaked away! Literally only had 4 each, bellies couldn't handle anymore food. Duck itself had absolutely no flavour, you can't really tell when covered in Peking duck sauce though. <br/><br/>First time I've never had an option for second course! Probably won't be back solely because the soup was so bad.....

I enjoyed my experience at Beijing Duck especially since if you order their specialty (Peking duck), the chef comes out and cuts it in front of your table. If comparing it to the other peking duck I've had, the duck lacked in flavour but it was a lot less oily (maybe a correlation there) and really good value for money considering we ordered a whole duck. We also ordered the chicken with mixed vegetables as we needed a dish with vegetables but disappointingly, it hardly had any vegetables in the dish other than a few celery pieces and the garnish on top. The chicken however was delicious and had this spicy sauce - if only it had more vegetables! Good place though, would return to try more of what they have to offer.

Too over-rated. The staffs are so unfriendly and grumpy faced all the time. We ordered a few dishes including their signature Beijing Peking Duck. The lemon chicken doesn't has any lemon taste and too much flour and gelatin. Same as the sweet and sour pork. The Beijing Peking Duck, the skin is not crispy and the meat is not enough taste. This is the worst duck meat I ever had. P/s: The steamed fish is much nicer than the duck. Won't recommend this place.
Kirstie
The Peking duck here is the best in auckland !! Service is great and staff are friendly with good English. Affordable price too , highly recommend to book in advance !
Kelly
Best Peking duck in Auckland. The duck is always fresh, with perfectly thin, crispy skin, and the pancakes are nice too. The chef comes out and carves the duck in front of you, and he's really friendly and bubbly. The interior looks crappy but trust me, they do awesome duck. And remember to book the day before, to make sure they have a duck (or two) ready for you.
David Clay
Amazing value, you will get good food and great Peking duck at a very good value $/head here. Atmosphere isn't amazing, service is alright as the staff know what they're doing but you might find it a little weak compared to other places especially if you can't speak chinese. If you want great Peking duck in auckland (with decent other Chinese dishes) this is the place to go.

The speciality of this restaurant is Peaking Duck. <br/><br/>The carving of the duck is done by the chef at your table is fun to watch and it is so yummy when eaten with the plum source, veggie and crepes. A must try dish. <br/><br/>You must leave as soon as you have finished eating as the place starts to get busy and there are limited sitting places normally you are advised by the staff.
Give Me Food
Food was tasty, authentic, and very cheap!<br/>Best value for peking duck in Auckland!<br/>I've been several times and find that the staffs are always friendly. <br/><br/>Can't believe people complained that the path is too narrow! They wheel out the peking duck on a trolley to your table and carve there, so obviously there's enough space for a trolley! <br/><br/>And as for the peking duck being tasteless, they are served with a sweet hoisin sauce because you are SUPPOSED to eat it with sauce! Cantonese style duck are marinated and therefore already have flavour, but peking style duck are not marinated and are meant to preserve the natural flavour of the duck. That's why they are served with sauce. <br/><br/>Yes it can get very noisy during peak times. And no, the staff don't come every 5 minutes to your table and ask how your food is. They take orders, bring you food, take the bill, and answer questions if you ask them. That's it. <br/><br/>No, this place is not an upmarket, fancy restaurant down at the viaduct. It is cheap, great value for money. It costs 4 people about $20 per person for peking duck and 2 extra dishes. <br/><br/>People shouldn't walk into a cheap restaurant and expect it to be like the French Cafe!
SeaLam
The staff were rude.<br/><br/>The walking path too narrow and no space to move.<br/><br/>Very danger if some accidents happen, hard to run outside of restaurant for safety.<br/><br/>They want to earn the maximum profit by putting more seat, but didn't consider the customer safety.
Hubert
If you want to go to a third world Restaurant, this is the place. Don't look at the carpet, or you don't want to eat there. The Peking has no taste, but it was not fat, that was the only good thing. All I say is,don't go there if you want a nice night out. Staff not friendly at all.<br/><br/>Hubert

We eat here often and we are never disappointed. The food is great, the staff are great and the price is very reasonable. Genuine Beijing cuisine, served fresh and so tasty. Loads of Asians eat there which speaks for the authenticity, we are not Asian, we love good food, and these people really look after us.

I found this restaurant after doing a google search.<br/>The food was awesome, the ladies were great &amp; the chef <br/>Was excellent! We have never had peking duck - but we will definitely be going back!
Lloyd Brady
My wife and I walked in without a booking last night and were lucky to get a free table. The place was packed which augured well for the quality of the food and we were not disappointed. <br/><br/>Staff were friendly and helpful and attentive despite being very busy. We had a delicious meal and brought our leftovers home with us.<br/><br/>We have no hesitation in saying we will be back. Prices were extremely reasonable.
Olive And Dennis
Beijing duck was nice and crispy but the menu does not offer much though if you ask them (e.g. noodles) they will say they do have it.<br/>Duck was sliced in front of you by a chef (a novelty) but for first timers they should have explained how to eat the duck using the steamed wrap. Lucky I had a Chinese friend who taught me how to do it.<br/>Price is average, very affordable but staff seems to be more attentive only to Chinese customers. <br/>We wondered why the others had take aways so early. We only realised that you had an option to take away the unsliced portion of the duck. Had I known it, I would have take it and used it for stir fry veggies.<br/>But will come back if we are in the same place.

12 December 2011. What a lovely meal! Our hosts were attentive and smiling. The duck is my new favourite dish. We ordered 3 extra's and also had soup to finish. Tea flowed. BYO wine. The bill came to $100. We took home 3 boxes of food left over! The wonderful chef also came to my rescue and helped get my flat battery charged. Highly recommend the service and the food!
Jamini Pulyadath
Loved the food at Bejing Duck! great value for money and absolutely delicious. Will go back without a doubt. <br/>Cheers,<br/>Jana

The staff were rude tried to usher us away in the beginning for no apparent reason that seemed to become a little more clear to me later on. They literally just dropped our food on the table, The food was slimy and repulsive. Clearly they only give great service to other asians i discovered. <br/><br/>The restaurant itself looks dated and unclean. I was less than impressed and more than underwhelmed by my experience there and if none of these, then slightly traumatized. <br/><br/>I will CERTAINLY not go back. In fact i just gave the indian restaurant a few numbers down a 5 star rating called Maharajah Indian Restaurant. Check that one out instead. <br/><br/>Go to that one instead.
Donna Thompson
Extremely good value for money. One duck meal was enough for two of us although there looked like many tempting items on the menu. We weren't able to purchase alcohol at the restaurant, but were recommened an alcohol shop just next door where we could purchase and then BYO into the restaurant.<br/>Staff were very friendly and accomodating. I highly recommend and I know I will be returning one day soon!

Thanx to Kasha for the comments and recommendation for this place, we didn't take your advice, about maybe 'not needing to order more food' the Beijing Duck is a large meal especially for two people, at least we had left overs which was just as enjoyable, we loved the other dishes too, make sure you ring and book if you are having the duck, and ask about B.Y.O as there are not many alternatives, was still really happy after the bill :)

We recently dined at Beijing Duck Restaurant and were more than pleasantly surprised. We pre- ordered the peking duck and upon arrival had to wait only a few minutes before it was served to us by the the Chef. What an experience, it was absolutely delicious. Tender and juicy with a crispy skin, just how it should be. We also ordered two other main dishes and although we were already full after the duck we managed to finish all the plates, the food was so good! The ultimate surprise was the price. What a bargain. A whole duck, 2 extra mains, copious amounts of rice and jasmine tea which were filled up continously throughout the meal all for 90 dollars. This fed and satisfied four adults! We also brought our own wine and as far as we could make out we wernt charged the corkage fee. This restaurant is really worth tryint out, the staff are friendly, the food is excellent and the duck, well, dont need to say much more. We will definitely go back for more!

Best Peking Duck outside of Peking. Been here five times and always succulent and tasty. Carving at the table is an added experience. Also tried various other dishes from the menu and all very fresh and tasty. I am very happy to discover this place as it saves me the cross town drive to canton cafe. Panmure's best kept secret.

Book one hour min in advance for the house special "Peking Duck"<br/>Dine with min of 3 people as the duck courses are too much for 2 people!<br/>The carving of the duck by the chef at your table is fun to watch and it is so yummy when eaten with the plum source, veggie and pancake!<br/>BYO wine to suit the duck as it may be a while when it finally comes to the table!<br/>The soup that follows is quite filling but you gotta try this at least once in your lifetime
Lillian
Came here on the last Sat of the year for lunch, the place was empty except one other table, which is fine cos Auckland is always quiet around this time. The four of us have ordered a peking duck in advance and they carve it tableside. $48 gets you the duck/pancakes + duck soup. The duck was very nice and the soup I thought was quite cleansing. We also got the Golden Sand Prawn, which is fried in salted duck yolk, it was very yummy with sweet & salty flavour, but a little bit too oily with our duck haha! We also got the pickled cucumber which was also quite palate cleansing. Admittedly the atmosphere might have been better if there were more other tables but otherwise we still had a good time.
