Review Canopius - Papakura

Delicious interesting dishes that we're beautifully plated. Vegan options. Their vegan "cheesecake" was delicious!

Vegan mushroom lentil burger and raw cheesecake, yes yes yes! These guys are always friendly, accommodating and delicious, the food not the staff, although that guy at the counter... 😉 I stop here whenever I can. The vegan muffins hooked me and the coffee keeps me coming back. Thank you Canopius 😄✌

We went to its night time incarnation as a burger bar, as opposed to the day time version of a Cafe. As far as a burger bar goes, was very nice - if you're hungering for greens in your burger you'll need to choose carefully, but for all that they seem to be high quality and taste great. Side of fries could have served the two of us, although getting as the combo with a beer made better value

Great coffee, with very tasty and we'll presented food, and good service. You can't really ask for more! Will definitely be back to try other items on the menu

Food is fresh and the food good I do wish they had buffalo milk more frequently because it is really yummy in my coffee Some months later food is still yummy and still worth 4 stars

Absolutely Delightful Experience. Food was perfect and customer service outstanding. Wow !

Loved the food here. The burgers and chips meal was amazing.

4 of us had morning tea here last Saturday. We each had different muffins which were delicious. I had the blueberry and Walnut - the BEST MUFFIN I've had at a cafe!! Not made with the usual commercial flour mix and you could taste the difference. So fresh, light and tasty with lots of blueberries and walnuts. The others said theirs were delicious too. The green teas and coffee were good too. With the Turmeric Latte was one of the best ever had.

Plenty of food options for all diets and tastes here, with a clear key for dietary requirements. Enjoyed bacon and eggs on toast and a well made long black from here, though the gluten free bread my partner had with his was quite small for the extra cost. Friendly and helpful service, the wait for food was slightly long but they didn't seem to have many staff working. Overall an enjoyable breakfast, top choice for a daytime meal in Papakura.

I ordered the Big breakfast and was pleasantly surprised. The portion size was good, and the presentation and taste completed the meal nicely. I am a fussy eater, and always look for these things when I eat out. Well done guys.

Nice cozy atmosphere that has streetside dining as well. Great breakfasts and friendly helpful staff. The only reason this is not a 5☆ review is because they forgot our coffee until after our food. Otherwise, highly recommend

Quick bite on off chance. Mistake quickly rectified and happy with result. Cabinet food varied and nice. Croissant and scone. Would return when have more time.

Went there today for the first time and absolutely loved the food. We had a Cajun sandwich. The coffee was delicious and the service is top notch. Thank you!

Was so looking forward to a great experience and a place to take my family for Saturday morning breakfast, ordered milkshakes for the boys the chocolate one was good and tasty the mango one however tasted like plain milk no mango flavor. Then the boys had the pancakes and added bacon to their meal...which the bacon never made it to plate, I went back and asked for it said they'll sort it out gew minutes later 2 pieces of bacon on a side plate pumped on our table and not even an apology from the chefs. Looks like they short staff but don't take it out on the food you make, your emotions ruin it. Oh yes my meal was the cinnamon French toast (not freshly made) and yogurt on their was sour. So disappointing spent $78 for poor service
For Papakura this place is pretty niche, I would have never expected Papakura town centre to have a cafe that offers, raw paleo whole foods and some really scrumptious options and excellent coffee. This is something out of Mt Eden village or Remuera, but does Remuera even have a place like this?? Definitely bringing good food closer to home.

Gorgeous cafe, lovely friendly staff and the tumeric latte was divine!! I came after being told that the tumeric is grown fresh and I wasn't disappointed! Paleo desserts galore, a clean rustic atmosphere. Thanks Corrina for your great service, we will definitely be back

Worst raspberry milkshake ever... Put spinach on my order even though I asked for none... Dirty tables, had to ask to clean... Bland flavour... Really nice free Range bacon though

Good service, nice coffee and an impressive range of healthy food options. Lots of seating options, but could do with a canopy or window tinting as the front tables get so hot when the sun is out.

A friend & I stopped in for lunch. He had a steak sandwich whereas I had an egg burger. Both meals came with fries.

In honesty the prices were a little high but the food was excellent. Service was a little confusing as I'd expected to be given an order flag however our order was correct and delivered to the correct place.

Perhaps my biggest gripe was that my hot chocolate was 50% foam.

Definitely worth a second visit... Next time I'm going to try that steak sandwich.

Had breakfast here yesterday with the hubby and it instantly became one of our favourite spots! We are doing sugar-free year so the cakes made from raw ingredients is perfect!!!! Definitely a must to visit!

Great meal tonight.. we had a beef burger and chicken burger.. followed by a mixed berry cheesecake and a beetroot cheesecake with chai latte.. food had great flavour.. beetroot cheesecake was unexpectedly delicious.. the atmosphere is laid back almost old school ponsonby feel about it.. staff are friendly and not bad to look at either.
Incredibly disappointing experience! Was in to get coffee and a cake. I’m surprised to see staff don’t smile and was chewing gum. I almost felt as though they don’t care if they have customers or not. The place has a rustic ambience which is great but the food was pathetic. The chocolate cake was disappointing.

Coffee was very bad and the food was average. Not to mention me and my sister’s meals were both extremely over cooked and burnt. The cafe was quite cute and the decor was nice but would not ever go there again.

Best place in Papakura for coffee or if you're just feeling peckish for something that wont throw your waistline completely in the deep end! Pleasant service and their Friday night burgers are too good to refuse. Really love the fact they use bio plant-based takeaway utensils! ✌

Food was amazing, fresh and tasty :) Friendly staff, awesome for allergy options đŸ‘đŸ» we had the creamy mushrooms, eggs benny with bacon and kids pancakes :) Good coffee!

Staff were nice but the coffee was really bad.

Had an ice coffee, really over extracted obviously - couldn't drink it.

Can't comment on food but just a warning for those looking for some decent coffee.

Love this cafe because it's full of guilt free healthy treats. Staff are so friendly and the omelettes are always so fluffy and delicious. The cheese and lambo burgers are my favourites.

Today, my wife and I visited Canopius in Papakura for a light lunch. We arrived and ordered some food and 2 coffees. After a while we were served some food noting that my wife's meal was incomplete. She mentioned this to the staff member but nothing was done and our coffees did not arrive either. I demanded a refund which eventually came and was joined by one other patron who also asked for a refund for an unserved order. Won't be returning and will share this with others. Must add that the food was OK. However, my Burger was 2 slices of bread not what I was expecting and the crust was rock hard bit the filling was very nice. My wife's meal had her favorite maple syrup which somewhat offset the meal not having the bacon as prescribed. The manager apologised for the blunder stating they were short staffed. In that situation they should warn customers at the time of serving so the choice is available if they don't mind a delay. For a business in the hospitality industry, I would expect this to be standard.
This place has a raw & rustic appeal. Staff were ok.This place is good for the community of Papakura that serves gourmet burgers, something different. Good selection of burgers , teas and a few desserts. A but pricey for a burger $14, but being the only one in town that sells a good burger. Wouldn't mind to pay for that price. Would come back again for the slices 🍰

My most favourite cafe ever! Food is amazing, coffee great, owners great and staff excellent! Don't miss the chance of experiencing this amazing cafe!

To add to my previous review we went to their burger bar last Friday which we thought was a great idea. Unfortunately, they have let themselves down. We asked for one burger to be gluten free. However, unknowing served a normal bun. It was not until I was half way through I clicked this bun was not in fact gluten free. They corrected it, but did not apologise or provide any compensation. We will not be returning they just seem complacent and I was ill the next day.

We really want to love this place as it's our local, but they are letting themselves down in a few areas. Positives is they have plenty of great gluten free options and really fit with the alternative foodies craze. Their coffee is not bad either. Sadly the quality of food is questionable. We have been here a few times and it's pretty hit and miss. Someone in our group had the the French toast which seemed to be not freshly made as it was cold and not warm and delicious as you would expect. Just dry and needed to be drenched in maple syrup to make it palatable. On the other hand I have had there buckwheat pancake which were pretty good for gf. I have also had the Chicken Sandwich which unfortunately fell in the dry category also. I really love the concept of this place, but they really need to up there game with freshness and quality of food they are serving. Please please improve so we can repeat brunch here!

Love Canopius and their cool little cafe. The food is enticing and healthy and makes for a great alternative to the abundance of fast food rubbish available in Papakura.

Love the vibe of this place. Coffee is okay...the milk can taste a bit weird at times and expensive at $5. Smallish cup.
Food is okay. Have had chicken sandwich which was nice, but expensive and service is pretty slow. Good to have in PApakura but still room to improve.

Have ate here twice now - both times have been incredibly disappointing.

Today I went for something sweet so I had the feijoa cheesecake and a ginger kiss. I totally regret choosing to eat here.

The cheesecake - which was pretty - tasted off. It wasn't a cheesecake it was a tall circle of cheesecake topping with absolutely no base.
The ginger kiss was bland and I couldn't finish it.

My cousin had the mushroom burger. She said the mushroom was really nice but the burger which was more like a sandwich was incredibly dry as there was little to no dressing present.

Another thing is the scone display had flies climbing over it all which was very off putting and if I had seen that prior to eating the food I would have left.

Ok. Service very slow...bringing items one by one to tables and lots of people waiting. Prices a bit high for a cafe in Papakura...ingredients aside. Atmosphere a lot better than a year ago when we first visited..it now has some character.
Kate DEatz
Love this cafe. They have the best coffee in Papakura by a long shot, living in Karaka where there are no good coffee options in a 10k radius this place has been a god sent for us. They even let us have their food scraps for my pig!
Belm
Visited here as working in the area now - I think this will become my new local. They have great treats for those on special diets - vegan, raw etc. Good coffee too.

Have looked at Canopius for a while now and finally tried it out today....firstly the positives. GREAT coffee, love the ambience of the café, good range of food on the menu, food presentation was great, prices are on par with most other cafés and great friendly staff. Now for the negatives....Cajun Chicken Sandwich - no real Cajun flavour, Chicken was overcooked and dry....large sandwich that is hard to eat. Positives for this dish are plenty of pesto, mayo and juicy tomatoes. Kumara and Spinach Latkes - Kumara was raw and it had a rather off putting smell so much so I couldn't eat it....like it was slightly off....poached eggs were hard...no runny centres at all, the avocado was very ripe, too ripe in my opinion for this type of dish. Positives...the bacon was yummy, the eggs although hard were very tasty and the added hollandaise sauce was great too. The avocado was a lovely touch and went well. I ate everything except the Kumara Latkes. Will I go back YES as I think everyone deserves a 2nd chance and just because I didn't like everything I had, everyone's tastes are different. Others have had the same dishes we had and enjoyed them. I may also enjoy what I have next time.

Canopius is AMAZING! Great service, and fantastic food. I LOVE being able to go somewhere and have a really good hot drink with almond milk. Their quinoa porridge is off the charts awesome, I have been to this cafe at lunchtime and ordered porridge because it was just so yum. They cater really well for people who are gluten free or have allergies, but the food is great for people who don't have issues too. SO worth a visit.
Stephy_NakiGirl
Have eaten here many times with friends. Canopius is a relatively new cafe to Papakura. Fantastic to see a cafe that cares about ingredients - free range, dairy & gluten free options (including cakes), paleo & primal. Great not only for those who have allergies, but those who don't want to eat rubbish. Items are maybe a little more expensive than the average cafe, but that stands to reason when you think of the ingredients used.
Service is good. It's a smallish cafe, but they are friendly & work to clear any queue on busy days.
Coffee is good - they provide coconut sugar on the tables instead of refined sugar.
Good range of prepared & menu items, also a nice range of smoothies.
Today I ordered the omelette ($14) with a side of bacon ($3). It is a good sized portion with a piece of toast & guacamole. The omelette has onion, tomato & spinach with Gouda. I love this dish, but there can sometimes be way too much onion as there was today. It would be good it this was reduced as it can be overpowering. The bacon could have been crispier with the fat more rendered but I know they would be happy to do this if I ask next time.
Well worth a try next time you are in Papakura.

I was so goddamned excited when Canopius opened! To have a place like this in Papakura was so great AND they were bound to have vegan options. Well sadly, I have been disappointed a number of times going here. I have given them quite a few chances because I really wanted them to be awesome. A lot of the time there isn't anything vegan so I just get coffee while friends eat - even that is bad. But I posted on their Facebook page to let them know that the demand is there for vegan food and I am willing to give them my money. Then their mushroom burger got altered to take the egg out - huzzah!!! A vegan dish!!! This was really good the two times I had it - that's what the 2 points are for. The coffee has always been bad and the service is shit. One time I asked if the berry cheesecake was vegan and without honey, I was told it was. I ordered it, along with the burger, the cheesecake came, it was still frozen - like fully frozen, not how it should be at all and the coconut oil had split. I can ignore all of that, put the first bit in my mouth and had to spit it out. It tasted like onion. It was obviously put in the freezer with onion or something with onion in it as the onion had soaked into the cheesecake. I tried another bite, still the same. I got my friend to try, she spat it out immediate. I told the staff that it tasted like onion, very strong onion. There was no apology, they seemed quite irritated with me and said I could have a slice of the coconut cheesecake, that came and the coconut oil had also split, I took my first bite and spat it out immediately. The coconut oil was rancid! It was absolutely disgusting!! I didn't have any more. The chef then came to see me and told me that there was no mushrooms for the patty, she said she could do a plate of veggies for me. That was just what she did, they weren't anything special. Certainly not what I would have paid that amount for. When the waiter came to the table to take things away he asked if there was a problem with this cheesecake, I said yes that the coconut oil was off and I won't be eating it, his response was "So I can take the plate away?" looking annoyed. There was no sorry or offer to refund the money.

Wow what a nice change, good healthy, whole food full of flavors. All served by friendly staff in friendly atmosphere. Loved it and will definitely be returning

Really happy to know there's a local 'real food' Cafe I can go to and not dread taking my son to for fear of him not having anything real to choose from. Prices were great, food was delicious. Loved my cocomo!

Awesome cafe. Coffees there are the nicest coffees I have ever had.

The food is very healthy and delicious too and I cannot understand why people are complaining that the food is not sweet enough. The deserts and cakes and slices are definitely sweet enough.

Definitely a cafe that my family and I will visit regularly.

Well who knew papakura had finally come into the 21st century. Coconut milk mocha was a god send on a hard Sunday morning. Light and silky it went down a treat. Cabinet food looked amazing and it was good to see clearly labeled gluten and dairy free options. There was even a paleo option!!! Exposed Industrial decor was also a fresh change for papakura. I do chuckle at all the above reviews moaning about not having soy cause a true clean eating cafe most likely won't stock soy cause soy is pretty bad for you. Keep up the good work.

Maybe they're still ironing out the creases. Went on an averagely busy Saturday lunchtime, but they didn't seem to be handling it too well. Even though we had table numbers they kept trying to deliver us the wrong food. I ordered the buckwheat pancakes, which were as thick and stodgy as scones! Gluten free can be done a lot better. My date enjoyed their pumpkins soup. Drinks took a long time to come but we're good. Lovely decor, and a great idea, just needs executing better.

For the first time. I drink a wonderful cafe moccacino. Amazing caffe and food.
I was recommended to visit here and drink, eat in this place.

If you don't like healthy food don't go here. We didn't realize and ordered cheesecake, a muffin and carrot cake. The kids wouldn't even eat the cheesecake which was oddly gritty...healthy version i assume. The muffin was average and carrot cake was dry and too much baking soda. Great for people who are into paleo or gluten free or whatever but for someone who is after a treat, or if you have kids, go elsewhere. The coffee was good though.

Nice little cafe. Feels like you're stepping out of papakura and into ponsonby or something. The Cocomo (mocha with coconut milk) is too die for! Food was OK but that is just my food taste. Presentation and service was great. Brought the raspberry chocolate brownie to eat later & I looooved it!

Seriously. Omg. On my never ending quest for gluten free foods (I have Coeliac Disease) I was recommended to come here and I was not let down. A crap load of their food is gluten free, and as the super friendly staff member explained, their whole philosophy is based around clean eating. I didn't even pretend I was buying for multiple people when I ordered several items from their cabinet. Seriously. Go here. Food was so good and they made a mean coffee. Thank you!
Simon Harvey
Great coffee and wonderful service in this beautifully restored, high-ambience cafe. The food looked good, and I'll certainly try that out next time. This place is a real gem for Papakura.
Dondon3000
I must admit there was a lot of hype surrounding this place. I had to go and try it. I only went in for coffee. Ordered a long black and it was ok no crema on top and they used the wrong size saucer so it had a serviette underneath. We were the only ones there and I couldn't understand why they had no saucer. I believe it's the little things that make the experience and I did not get that. Deco was very nice and slick. Counter food looks nice.
Ana Key
Staff are rude and condescending. Asked for soy milk and rudely got told that they DON'T STOCK IT because it's bad for you. Guacamole on my meal was inedible. Wouldn't go back

Mid-afternoon and traveling through town, I was feeling a bit peckish but thought I'd probably be hard pushed to find something decent to eat. I needn't have worried - Canopius is handily positioned on the main street and has generous opening hours. The interior has an industrial yet warm feel, using a lot of retro fitting to create a cosy vibe. With a focus on providing allergen-free whole foods, I was impressed with how many options were still available in their cabinet.
I decided to order their dairy-free carrot cake with coconut and maple frosting and one of their famous CoCoMos - a mocha with coconut milk. The carrot cake was fantastic - delightful and moist with loads of flavour. The frosting wasn't overly sweet, which I found quite pleasant. The CoCoMo was very interesting- as a usual soy milk drinker, I can tell you that it is NOT the same taste. I enjoyed it very much though, the coffee was roasted and treated well to create a mellow blend.
The ambience was delightful - if dining by myself I'll often whip out headphones but the music mix was so good I didn't feel it was necessary. The only thing I felt it lacked were a couple of comfy arm chairs that you could really sink yourself into - all seating in the cafe is either wood and/or metal. The service was friendly without being in your face. I'd definitely recommend this place to those who struggle to find "free from" allergen options or those who are looking for a refined-sugar-free treat. We'll definitely be back.

Sarah Reynolds #challenge

Pretty excited about this place. I'd driven past numerous times and always thought it looked look an awesome place and I finally stopped in today. So glad I did.
Was delighted to see a cabinet with vegan gluten free delights (if only this place were around when I was vegan!)
I got myself mushrooms on toast which was awesome. The big chunky cuts of mushroom were a delight as was the delicious hint of
whole mustard. Creamy but not sickly. Toast was a lovely grainy sourdough which just topped the whole thing off.
Coffee was so so but I'll be back to see if they pick up their coffee game and I will without a doubt be back to try the coconut cheesecake and their chocolate tart.
Marnie Clout
Went here with great expectations only to be disappointed. The raw slices and cakes in the cabinet looked like they had been made without care (the coconut oil had split from the toppings showing the mix had over heated during mixing). We bought vanilla / coconut bliss balls, raw slice and coffee. The coffee was ok, but we couldnt eat the bliss balls as something in it made us gag and spit up (the coconut oil was rancid). The raw slice tasted like freezer burn. Great concept, poor execution. We haven't been back since and have no intention of returning.

I've been here on multiple occasions now and wouldn't hesitate to recommend Canopious. It's so great that everything is healthier and so tasty. The prices are very reasonable and the quality of food is great. Great flavours and the service was lovely

Wasn't blown away, was really looking forward to "clean eating food" I have been several times now and I think I'm done going there. Food is just tasteless in the cabinet very bland. On two different occasions now, the quinoa muffins have been frozen in the middle, so they are obviously not fresh. Had pumpkin soup was really looking forward to it, it was bland and lukewarm. I think also a couple of nice pieces of chunky homemade bread would be delicious with the soup rather than a cracker. Coconut cake looked delicious again tasteless. Clean eating food does not have to be tasteless. Great design, great location, staff very friendly. They just need to up their game for the amount you pay. Not a problem paying the prices but would like some flavour to go with them. Please go there to experience it for yourself it has great potential.

Came here the other day as had driven past during the week and felt like trying a new local coffee joint- I'm a soy milk drinker but they dint offer soy only coconut milk (which in a coconut fan- but in a mocha not so good) ended up drinking 1/4 and then throwing my guts up uppon getting home as the coffee and coconut milk was intense- if they offer soy I will be back for coffee other wise I won't- which is a shame as there food menu looked decent- I did try there coconut short bread and it was amazing.
