Review New Ruby Restaurant - Papakura

John Johnston
I highly recommend it for lunch. The lunch special is fantastic value, the food is delicious, the facilities first-class, and the service wonderful. I recommend you order a pot of jasmine tea with your lunch. It doesn't cost much, and it is superb. We don't live in Auckland, so will probably never get the opportunity to dine there in the evening. That's a pity, as I'm confident it would be a great experience.

Amazing to know this restaurant has been opening for 50 years! What a legend! Very friendly and kind service. Clean and kind. Reasonable price and good variety of food for a buffet meal.

Very delicious Cantonese food. No msg and no animal fat. The corn soup is freshly sweet. Though not traditional Cantonese style, all food are tasty. The owner said the restaurant has been running for 52 years.

Lovely, welcoming and clean restaurant. Decided to dine in and order the lunch special. Very good value for money it’s only like $12 or $13 for the whole plate so that’s a perfect lunch for me🙂

Value for money LUNCH at New Ruby Restaurant. I had honey pork with fried rice at NZD13.90. If you are at South Auckland and want a reasonable meal at reasonable price, this is a place I will recommend.

Great value, not greasy, tasty as chowmein, fried rice and great chips 😁

The music blew my socks off (in a great way) , the decor reminded me of my grandmas childhood, and the food was excellent, the perfect cure for our worlds issues :) 5 stars

Had the lunch special for two. Sweet and sour pork, fried rice, veges and wonton. All of it was very nice. Ate at a restaurant very close yesterday and spent twice what we did here for a meal that wasn't nearly as good. Definitely recommend.

The decor was not the best but the food was pretty good and the soundtrack was excellent. We would go again.

One of best Chinese food restaurant I ever been, good food, good price, good environment. If you come back from long weekend trip, best stop in papakura , because you going to jam in takanini papakura for 30min, might just go New Ruby Restaurant to dine in, and after dinner, traffic free as.....Will come back very soon again.

Service here was excellent. The restaurant is clean, and presentable. The food was fresh and flavourful. Plenty of options. Keep in mind, if you are after the authentic Chinese cuisine then do not criticise this place, and do your research. New Ruby cater for the larger kiwi population who grew up only knowing this as Chinese food, it is a local favourite. Thanks New Ruby

This restaurant is the old fashioned type, part of a community. It may not be Michellon star however the food is fresh, yummy and plenty of friendly faces.

Sharing plates in a lazy Susan (rotating table centrepiece) was great for groups. Went with a group of about 16. Lots of food, quick service and able to take excess food away in takeaway containers. Fave dishes Lemon fish and sweet&sour pork. Will return for sure

The staff are amazing. We have been so many times. Our favorite restaurant in auckland. Its prices are so reasonable and the banquet is divine, we having trouble walking after 😆

Food was ok. Fried chicken was good. I ordered the Family special and got two fried rice instead of the nasi goreng. Sweet sour pork could be better. Overall its ok but have had better.

Ruby Restaraunt has 2 parts. Done in & Takeaway. My review is about the take away part.
I went here on new years day (01/01/2020) as my normal chinese shop wasnt open (Shang Lee) it was about 9pm & I hadnt eaten all day so I was excited to eat. I ordered the Bbq Pork, wonton & Noodle Soup & some deep fried wontons.

Wonton soup: Was bland. I literally had to add my own flavorings to it. There was only 2 pieces of pork & the noodles were hard. Cooked but really really firm. Wontons were ok but by the time I got to those I was already dissapointed by everything else that it didnt matter how they tasted cos I was already upset.

Deep Fried Wontons: Were cold I'm not even exaggerating they were cold & the pastry to meat ratio was silly. Smallest amount of meat & HEAPS of pastry.

Deffinately wont be going back.

Lovely setting. Always warm, clean and cozy. Excellent service. Tasty food. Our favorite is the kum pow pork, salt and pepper tofu and squid. Value for money.

Great family run business, family friendly and well run. 8 of us had buffet dinner there yesterday, food always the same and a bit repetitive but that said always fresh, hot and plentiful. Kids love the food as well as the mocktails, great value and well recommended.
I am totally disturbed and shocked by this place. The owners are lovely however the food is truly trash. I paid $15 for a TINY sweet & sour pork and let me tell you it was incredibly vile. Just by looking at the dish, it looked like something I’d never had before & def not a sweet n sour dish. It was covered in a gross looking thick “gravy” sauce and the whole thing was disgusting. Stupidly I tried this dish again a couple weeks later to be sure it wasn’t a mistake and I’m shocked this is actually how they make the dish - on purpose ! Sad to say, will never be back. Have also eaten in & the dishes are all bland - not disgusting however not yummy. Keep in mind you can purchase the dish I had for $5 for equal or even more quantity in other south Auckland suburbs that actually taste nice. $15 is a killing for what I assume to be corn syrup

Run by family for many many years, you get a friendly service from the owners and their kids. Food reminds me of traditional home cooking, not super tasty as if msg was added, but not so bland that you know you just cook better at home. Hits and misses with different menu items, but mostly enjoyable. I strongly recommend ordering ala carte instead of their buffet. Their takeaway is somehow not as good as dining in either. Decor is very old, needs a revamp! But when we eat during dinnertime, they put on air-conditioning so it feels comfortable. Our lil picky eater actually enjoys eating here because she feels like at home with the staff being very attentive to her. We have been back many a times, and will still do so to support local businesses.

If i could rate this resturant any lower I would.
DISCUSTING!!!!!!
There were baby cockroaches on the desert table and not just one strand of hair but a couples pieces of hair in the prawns.
Wouldn't recommend this resturant to anyone.
DO NOT COME HERE

This was quite average to be honest it was a basic smorghesboard and at $25 per head (which I thought was pretty high to be honest) the selection was standard and the food really really bland. Obviously theyre catering for a core market of families with childreb who dont like a whole lot of taste but for adult couples youd be better with takeaways. But what incensed me the most was when I asked (for my $25) if we could take our desert away in a doggy bag rather than eat it (because we were full) they said no and that wed have to buy a whole new desert from the menu, which for $25 (remembering we harnt yet eaten the desert off the buffet but wanted to take it home, for $25 in Papakura and they cant even do that?? Not to meneion that the food was as bland as hell? I would not recommend this place and probably wont go there again!!!

Good old ruby. Have been going here on and off for 10 years plus. Nothing has changed one bit. The food the tables the serving station even the outdated tape player. But still a good no stress atmosphere and you always leave full after the smorgasbord. Staff are lovely and caring. Most of the food is pretty good especially the bbq pork and crispy chicken.
Lily
Save your money and go elsewhere.
We ordered the banquet and were totally disappointed. Dinner plates were given to us still wet from dishwasher. Food was tasteless. Most of the dishes had been over thickened with cornflour. Soup was like wallpaper glue. BBQ pork was reheated and dry, definitely not freshly made.
Left hungry. Decor dated and dirty.

We had Chinese for dinner tonight and it was absolutely disgusting!! Got all the way home and served up to find the chips weren't cooked and the fried rice was the worse fried rice we have ever eaten!! We ordered the fanily pack for 4-6 people wasted $45 tonight! New Ruby is our local but we will be finding a new restaurant to go to. We rung up to complain about the food, the women was extremely rude and didn't care. Very disappointing!!! Would not recommend.

Been to the ruby many times over the years and have always loved the garlic prawns and scallops. Recent visit was dissappointing though. The garlic prawns were nothing like they used to be and were quite bland. Bring back the old recipe/chef!

The food at the New Ruby is disgusting and the staff pick up the BBQ pork from buffet when they eat over leaf food start recycling the food and use again!

Amazing food and staff. One of the best Chinese restaurants in Auckland! Get down to Papakura and try it. Reasonable price, friendly, funny staff and the food is just amazing. Recommend seafood in birds nest or duck treasure. You will never go home hungry after eating at this place. BYO also.

It's looking a bit tired inside and the air is stuffy. I went for lunch and the service was fine and the food ok. It was nothing special, but not awful either, I probably wouldn't go back just because of how stuffy it was inside, they need some airflow.

If you are looking for a night at an old age home were the food is value for money, then this restaurant is for you. The music was reminiscent of an old age home and the food was below average. We ordered satay chicken kebabs and bbq chicken wings for starters, the satay chicken looked anaemic and was smothered in satay sauce. The bbq chicken wings were ok. We also had the cantonese duck which was ok, but the pork was disappointing and smothered in sauce that covered the side order of veggies as well, which I ordered without sauce. The pudding menu was the worst. I ordered chocolate cake which turned out to be the cheap Countdown cake you can get for $4, my husband's cheescake was defrosted Sara Lee or mayber ever the cheaper homebrand fridge version, which they they charged $6 for. Also a very small portion. All in all a very dissapointing night.

Went to New Ruby last night and it was a group booking with about 25-30 people. The place is very tidy but a little to cramped but it is well organised. The decor is a bit 1970ish but is still presentable. The food was great. it was cooked properly with plenty of flavour and a good selection of food. The thing a liked was that they kept stocking up the buffet so if you wanted more of the same thing you didn't have to wait for more to arrive and the dessert was just the best with a huge selection. It was more a Kiwi/Chinese vibe going. One bad point was the barman who was a bit on the slow side which was ok because he did a good job making cocktails etc. When we first arrived we were greeted by a friendly staff member, we gave them the booking name and they showed us to our tables. Most of the people in the group were standing and talking and I was wondering if the staff would come and ask us to sit down as we were close to where the restrooms were and other diners were having to walk around us, but they didn't seem to mind. I have to say that. I would have no problem with going back there soon.

I go to New Ruby for the takeaways only, but the food there is magnificent! Had garlic prawns and some curry dishes the other day and I gotta say it's pretty damn delicious! MUST go to the restaurant some day for the buffet!
Jenny Daly
Ordered from the takeaway menu.... Crap! What a waste of $40! We didn't finish it, just threw it in the bin! Never ever going back!! So annoyed right now, nothing worse than bad food!
Heather
My family ate there the other day and while the service was friendly the food was fairly average. The chicken was nice but the duck and fish were sub standard. We got two of our meals and the other didn't come out for about another 15 minutes. The most disappointing thing about the whole experience was that they had shark fin soup. It is a very cruel practice and should be outlawed.

I love this place. We had our wedding reception there and our one year anniversary party there too. We love it. Everyone kept telling us how wonderful it was. Best service, friendly staff, fantastic food. A+++. We have been so impressed we are going there for my mums birthday this week :)
Steph
I love New Ruby Restaurant, we don't go as often as I'd like but I always enjoy it when we do. I love, love, love their garlic prawns. Dessert needs a bit of work but other than that, no complaints!

I have been going to, and taking my friends to the Ruby Restaurant for a long time. I have never been disappointed with the smorgasborg meal, or the takeaways which we have on a Friday night on a regular basis. The staff is always friendly and very accommodating. The restaurant is very clean, and the kitchen spotless.
Well done Ruby

We often go to New Ruby Restaurant for dinner. We love the beautiful food they have on the smorgasbord. We have never had any kind of bad experience with this place. We are big fans and love to take our friends there as well. Not only is the food great, the staff is more than accommodating and are quick to help if required. Full Marks New Ruby!!

My family celebrated a 50th Birthday on Saturday (14 May 2011) here. This was my 4th time and a first for my family. I was excited to take them here and to see their reactions to the food. They thoroughly enjoyed the smorgasbord selections and the food was cooked to perfection, from the starters to the main, then dessert, washed down with coffee - we left totally satisfied and definitely value for money I would rate this one of the best chinese restaurants I have been to (and I have been to many). Thanks again to New Ruby Restaurant and great staff.

I booked a family meal at this restaurant on Saturday 23/02/13 ( 3 adults & 1 child ). I booked early afternoon for between 6:30 - 7.00PM. On our arrival it was absolutely packed. They showed us to our table which were 2 small round tables pushed together which were positioned behind the door going into the kitchen. I was not happy with this & told them so. They said sorry we don't have any other tables. So we left & went to the Wild Orchid. I was quite upset at this as we have not dined out as a family for quite sometime. That put a damper on the evening. Thanx New Ruby Restaurant.

Very disappointing, the deep fried orders were burnt and tasteless, the wontons and spring rolls did not have or no meat in them and the prices were ridiculously outrageous for a sub-standard restaurant
Tam
Food is pretty kiwi-ised and bears little resemblance to Chinese or any type of Asian cuisine. Receptionist looks like she has been sucking lemons all morning and is as friendly as a barbed wire fence.
Not very good food at all.

Ive been to Ruby's Rest for lunch and diner very good service good place for the family the food was great tasty and you could tell the veges were nice and fresh not the best in the world but by far the best in the area and the food temperature was nice and hot,The tables were clean set fairly well the loos were a little well it needs better ventilation the decor was the only major let down you feel like your in a box that was made in the 1970s but well the value for money and the great tasting food will see me back their again The black bean sauce YUMMY!!!
