Review Pap House - Papamoa

Shane McGregor
I recently had the pleasure of dining and having a few drinks and a party at Pap House. The locals pub well known for its great food and service. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted warmly by Bobby, the owner, who was eager to ensure that my dining experience was enjoyable. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with a relaxed family atmosphere that made me feel right at home. And the food...oh, the food! I have to say, I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the dishes served at Pap House. Every bite was bursting with flavor, and it was clear that a lot of care had gone into the preparation of each dish. But what really stood out to me was the level of service provided by Bobby and his team. They were attentive, friendly, and went above and beyond to make sure that my every need and everyone with me was met. Whether it was offering recommendations from the menu or checking in to see how my meal was, the staff at Pap House truly made me feel like a valued customer. I have been back several different times and the level of service is maintained at all times. Overall, I would highly recommend Pap House to anyone looking for a top-notch dining experience. The food is exceptional, the service is outstanding, and the prices are very reasonable. If you're in the area, do yourself a favor and give it a try - you won't regret it!

Friendly & helpful staff. Great Rhubarb&Apple cider. Ordered ribs and they came our quickly. Generous servings, good amount of sauce- not too little that the ribs were dry and not too much that the ribs were a soup. Crispy chips and good amount of coleslaw. A lot of kiwi favourites on the menu.

Absolutely mean food, very happy family over here. We spent $367 for 6 adults and 1 10 yr old. And we came home with 5 containers of left over food. The meat and seafood platters are Absolutely delish! Pork belly & lamb shanks just melted in your mouth. Boss burger was huuuuuuuge! Had to be dissected to be eaten lol Cabonara & Mac n cheese was yummy! Mac n cheese was a lil bit too cheesy for our cheese lover but he enjoyed it anyways!

A beautiful place from the location to the food to the atmosphere and most importantly for me the service. My family and I absolutely love pap house. A great place to just pop in and enjoy a bevy or treat yourself to something special and order from the menu. Furthermore I once dropped some money there only to be phoned by the manager the next day who had gone out of his way to find it and return it to me. 10/10 all round.

Had a huge family get together there!! Food was excellent. Totally awesome service. It was raining and windy and we were so happy you were able to accommodate us all..

Very nice place for lunch, lovely vibe and reasonable price. Shared a pizza, chips and garlic bread. Chips and garlic bread 10/10. Margarita Pizza was 6/10, it was nice but you can’t really taste a tomato base. We only really tasted the basil pesto. Not sure if the soft drinks were on fountain but they tasted very flat and syrupy.

Log fire was warm upon walking in. Very attentive greeting. Fish n chips always nice and tasty. Ice cream sundaes needed way more sauce and perhaps nuts. L.A.B. was playing in the background which was nice as lead singer grew up in Papamoa.

We live just around the corner, so our regular watering hole of choice. Todd & Dakair who own the place have excellent staff who deliver a great service; combined this with a fab menu which is superbly cooked and you won’t go far wrong for an evening out.

We dined there for the first time last night. Great atmosphere, service great. Only one complaint, my husband ordered the eye fillet(which was small), it was served with 1 boiled potato cut in half & 2 spring carrots. Hubby not happy...was ok if it was an entree.. for $30 expected a good sized meal. Good news though, chef personally came to the rescue and presented a plate of veges which hubby happily received. The eye fillet was cooked to perfection. We will be dining again at Pap House.

Buzzy place, loved my seafood chowder and hubby loved the mussels. Son's Steak was slightly underdone but they were more than happy to replace with another full meal, we just wanted it cooked a little further. Dessert was delish! We will definitely be back.

Best pulled pork burger I've ever had!! Yum! Friendly staff, casual environment, excellent place to hang mid week after work or pop out for a quick dinner
Eating Out
Wandered into the Pap House for a drink and small bite to eat after a walk. Wasn't super hungry, so thought the side of gourmet potatoes would be a nice snack. Others at the table ordered kids meals, a couple of mains and fries, so that wasn't all that was ordered.

My "gourmet potatoes" for $8 turned up as 6 ping pong ball sized pieces, roughly half filling the bowl they came in, no offer of any sauces to go with them either. And "gourmet" turned out to be a bit of parsley (the waiter couldn't tell me exactly what "gourmet" entailed when I ordered them. When I queried it they basically said it was meant to be a side to a main meal - still wouldn't be happy paying $30 for a main, and having to pay another $8 for a few measly potatoes. The owner came and said they would charge me $6 for them, but too be honest I wouldn't have even thought that was good value.

The rest of the food was pretty basic. Service was ok-ish, although might have been nice to be asked if anyone wanted anything else upon delivery of the food, and if people were finished before taking plates.

Craft beers were good, and well priced...would probably add a few more options to this menu.
Meet & Eat
Stopped at Pap House after a really tough Monday to grab a quick bite to eat and a refreshing drink.

We were really pleasantly surprised with the food, as we were expecting it to have more of a bar feel. The waitress didn't have much clothes on, which made us a bit uncomfortable but, other than that, the experience was really good.

Lovely, flavourful dishes, good service and a friendly atmosphere. Great for grabbing a beer on the weekends when the rugby is on.

Atmosphere: 3

Food: 4

Service: 3

Price: 4

One-word description: Local

Really nice food the ceviche entree was amazing. Table had goat cheese balls, eye fillet, pork belly and fish tacos everyone loved their meals. Chef was attentive he noticed me pointing and talking about the ceviche so sent a waiter to make sure I was happy which I thought was a nice touch from them. House red was not good asked to exchange for a better bottle which they did with no charge or questions. Great service all round especially from the Asian waitress they had on.
There were a lot of people that were obviously having after work drinks who were quite intoxicated, understand that they need to capture all business but would recommend they try to separate diners from drinkers somehow.

Overall was a great restaurant and good to see this establishment (which has historically struggled in papamoa) doing well and will definitely return to try the fish tacos!

I gave it a shot after a recommendation from a friend who had been there many times before the brand change.

The atmosphere was awkward to say the least, with minimal decor. We started with the deep fried goat cheese, which I found okay but probably should've saved myself the money and deep fried some at home as they were nothing special. That was the best part of our night. Once my beef burger arrived I knew I had made a terrible mistake. As the grease was pooling on the wooden board they served me with, I noted that perhaps a bowl would've been better. As it streamed down onto the table, the owner noticed from across the room and remedied by giving me a dozen serviettes, "you'll need these, it does make a mess" he said, as if this were normal. The beef patty was dense and really tall for its size, as if it were hastily made. The combination of tasteless ingredients (how do you get cheese wrong?) and under-cooked chips confirmed my bad decision, so I turned my attention to my partner's meal, the pork belly on a bed of sickly apple cubes, which she commented would be better off in a dessert. The pork was cooked correctly at least. We didn't stay for dessert, even though I was still hungry.

After our meal concluded we went up to pay the bill and the waitress who had been great up until this point asked how it went. I voiced my thoughts on the pool of grease and tasteless beef, and she commented that everyone else loves it. My opinion is wrong, it would seem.

I advised our friend to keep her last experience a good memory and never visit again.

Sorry to say but Pap House was awful, terrible service, didn't feel welcome the minute we walked in. We walked in and decided to sit out in the courtyard in the front where the sun was shining down and everyone else was seated. Once seated we were immediately approached by a waitress and told this area is "restricted for 18 years and older." We didn't really want to sit anywhere else but the waitress was following us around with water and menus, so at that point we felt we had to just sit down and order. We then decided to sit out the back, but the concrete was sloped and it was unpleasant staring out to road/ buildings and dairies where cars were constantly passing. It was incredibly windy out the back and you felt closed of to the restaurant. But the worst thing of all was people were smoking all around us in a non smoking area. By this point we just wanted to leave. Feeling rushed and uncomfortable we then ordered a pulled pork burger with fries and a chicken and pesto burger with fries, even though we had lost all appetite. Then we couldn't handle the smoke lingering around us and we didn't want to eat out food in these conditions. So we picked up everything and headed inside for a better experience. We sat down at a table inside, finally happy where we were, but then we were approached by the same waitress in a rude manner saying "So it's actually against the law to be sitting in here." Stunned that we had been told off twice, and had no idea there could be so many places to not be allowed to sit. Even though we understand there is a bar and we shouldn't be around it when under aged, we think there should be more seating. But this should be stated before we decide to spend our money here. We responded with "there is actually people smoking out there." Even though it wasn't just the smokers. They sorted it and we were forced to go back and sit in the dreadful outside area that from a far distance looks like a whole lot of bulky brown tables and chairs had been thrown close together and on top of one another. Smoke was still everywhere and we had people staring at us, we just wanted to leave and forget about our food we were so fed up. Then food arrives at our table almost chucked on the table by a male waiter. Food looks good, bread bun needed to be toasted as the pork juices were almost instantly absorbed by the bun which made it hard to eat. Fat or juices from pork leaked from burger. As for the chicken burger, chicken was tasteless / dry and chewy. Both burgers were served on a chopping board which was impractical when eating as all the "yummy" juices are absorbed and disappeared. When cutting the burger as it was so big, became a difficult task as there was little to no space to do so. Burger fell of board a bit and got really messy. Once finished burgers we were full but unsatisfied afterwards. Still had a few chips left to eat but unexpectedly the same male waiter took our plates without asking if we had finished or not when I hadn't. Did not ask how the meal was / no conversation. We then got up and headed towards the counter where all eyes were on us for some reason. Waiter mumbled as we approached counter, could not understand anything he was saying! We kept replying with what? Etc... He gave up and just charged us no conservation made about experience of the food. We were charged $40.00 when that doesn't add up... Burgers cost $17 + $18 = $35 plus a ginger beer which we were told was no more than four dollars as no drink menu was handed to us at beginning. Shoud Be 38 to 39 dollars, wasn't a big issue just quite fed up at this point. Then we paid and used the bathroom and left. Overall terrible customer service, no manners, no where to sit apart from horrible outside area, average / poor food, too many rules, rude staff will never ever be going back to this restaurant again. So disappointed and money was not well spent. Had high hopes.

Went here for lunch with a friend- it was great for a pub!! They have extremely good choices of beers on tap- and so cheap too!! Had the fish and chips for two- very decent value for money. The chips were exceptionally good- could have used more of these on the plate :-) Service was terse but not unfriendly.
The Food Scribbler
This place is awesome. It is definitely our favourite place to eat in Papamoa. We have probably been there 10 times and the food is excellent every time. The best dish is the prawns with chorizo, which unfortunately didn't make the cut when the menu was refreshed recently, but the chef remembered us and offered to make it especially (great service!) Hubby and all who have tried it love the pulled pork burger. Beware it is super juicy. The prices are very reasonable as the servings are generous. The staff are friendly and helpful and always check in to see if everything is ok. We have taken the kids for lunch and early dinners and the staff are great with them. This place is family friendly, they have colouring in stuff for the kids to do and they even display the art on their wall. All in all, this is a great local pub with far better quality food than usual pub fare. This business deserves to thrive. Thanks Pap House!
