Review Red Wall 1939 - Parnell

Some of the traditional chinese dishes from across China, in combine with fresh top notch local ingredients, then put together very carefully. The atmosphere and plating was all very nice. There is nothing wrong with any of the dishes, all tastes just like how it should be, but none of the dishes really stood out.

I have to say this is the best Chinese fine dining place in New Zealand! Must try! But make sure to reserve 72 hours prior!

Nice food present, need to focus more on customers service

The restaurant is new, notably narrated as run by a chef who has served the highest ranking cadres in Beijing. The building is beautifully surrounded by rose gardens. However, the name and the dishes didn't resonate each other. Food presentation is awesome, taste is above average. It is definitely not the imagination we might have within the Red Wall, if the name hints the forbidden modern city. The missing star is the service, it will the a full five star if David at the Grill is running the floor.

First class food in Auckland. Just had the nine course degustation menu and could not fault any dish making it very difficult to choose a favorite. Will definitely return to this restaurant again.

Magnificent! The venue is tastefully decorated, the food exquisite and the back story special. Attended a business breakfast here and the Asian inspired high tea was a feast for the senses.

Excellent service and ambience for authentic modern Chinese fine cuisine. I really enjoyed the hospitality , and impressed about the creativity of the food.

Dishes, service, environment all the details are perfect. One of the most decent and delicate CHINESE food restaurants in the downtown AKL.

Seriously, I wouldn't come here again for sure. Whoever runs this restaurant is so cheap with their ingredients and serves such mediocre food with a ridiculous price.

I gave it a 2 star because the service was good and the mushroom bread and avocado dessert were the only 2 dishes in the whole course that were impressive and worth mentioning.

Everything is so meh. The starters just absolutely shocked me seriously, its just baby food puree served in fancy spoons....I wouldn't even eat this at home.. I was really looking forward to the lobster but most of it wasn't even cooked so......

👎overall a no from me

Being in Auckland for 25 years, I’d say this is the best Chinese restaurant I’ve been to. Great flavour and sophisticated presentation.

We had the nine course set menu and overall the food is above average. Roasted crayfish and avocado mousse are our favorite and definitely worth a try. The service is just poor if considering the restaurant as a fine dinning place. If what you are expecting is a fine dinning experience, I don’t recommend this restaurant coz the food and service don’t match the price ($179 pp) at all. You can find way better fine dinning restaurants around Auckland.

Pretty disappointing dining experience, both in terms of food and service. We had the 9-course menu, but most of the dishes lacked the “fine” aspect of fine dining. The first course was bread and butter (average, and pretty rare for bread to be a stand-alone dish in fine dining to be honest). Second dish was scallop, which was unfresh and quite dry. The lamb in the main dish was also dry and would recommend swapping to the pork for an extra $10.

I love this place and their food, even the service is so good. I told my friends that if you wanna try some authentic Chinese food, come to the Red Wall, it gonna blow your mind! Good presentation, good flavor, good quality, worth to try! :)
One of a kind Chinese fine dining. Very delicious experience, its authentic chinese food thats cooked delicately with great local ingredients. You dont see this type of chinese food much, when we are surrounded by takeaway type of chinese food. This place would also be great for any events or functions, the ambience is really nice

Really good services experience, didn’t expect that much before visit. Average spending is way lower than Zomato listed, we had a dinner with lobster and ducks also dessert and a another meat to share were only 100 each. The decoration👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 better than skycity Huami if compare the traditional fittings. The lobster is worthy more than a $60 dollar. This kind of weight of lobster costed me any my friend 300nzd+ in Huami. Highly recommend

This is a very unique dinning experience, the food was absolutely amazing and the waiting staff was patient and explain all the story behind the dish , it’s quite interesting , the background of the restaurant was full of stories according to the royalty family and secret recipes, we also received a complementary brocollini dish, they used their own homemade chili paste which is so yummy , the staff taught me how to used that to make the dish, I bought some see if I can be a good chef , very special culinary journey, 5/5

We came here for dinner and had a Wonderful time! The service was very good and quick, the food was fabulous, and a very nice relaxing afternoon spent in there. 👍

OMG, the new menu surprised us! Taste so good! Services are nice too, took my jacket after I seated& keep filing wine and water if my glass becomes empty. 5 stars recommend. So hard to choose my favorite dishes, guess roasted royal pork is one of my fav. The best dessert worth to taste is peach gum!! The price is not that expensive as I thought. Overall a lovely place to go. Easy to find a car park and can feel the royal culture through restaurant setting.

The experience was quite complicated.

Very nice dinning environment and decoration. But the taste of the food was plain, and just like the other comments said, their ingredients are kinda cheap, not worth for the price I paid.

This is my second time to eat here. I will say the second time experience is not as good as the first time.
Ambience: the first was in the second floor VIP room, waitress organized our three types of wine in good time with dishes. Kids pretty enjoyed the time over there. But the second time, I ate at the first floor, closed to the window, the light was always flashing, which is so annoying. When we came, waiter only provided $179 set menu, I got the other menu until I ask him.

Food: the first time I went with the $179 set, I love everything in the set !!! But the second time I chose the $99 set with fish. Honestly, from the appetizer to the fish and prawn. They were all to salty and greasy.
Redwall 1939 hidden in Parnell Rose Gardens.
Pro: Artistic decoration, plate presentation
Con: the service didn't match their price.
Favourite dish: Marinated salmon fillet with ginger-lime sauce
But still worth a try

The table setting was a highlight - beautifully laid out with canapes and cutlery when we arrived. And the restaurant itself is a lovely old building and looking pleasantly out over the rose gardens.

The service was earnest and friendly, but ultimately not quite in keeping with an apparently 'high end' restaurant. We ordered water, and moments later a different staff member asked "would you like to order some water", we ordered some bubbly and moments later a different staff member asked "would you like to order some wine?". Not as slick as it should be.

But more concerningly, after our first 'course' (which was 'just' bread) we had a 'main course' of lamb placed in front of us. Gee, I thought, if its all this size then the meal will be a struggle to fit in (for me, let alone Anna). Turns out this should have been the 4th or 5th item on the menu. Worryingly, when we noted this, the staff member seemed almost puzzled that it mattered. "But this is the order the chef would like it served" said Anna. .

The food itself was OK. For every nice dish (the fish, the lamb) there was some pretty unremarkable (the dessert, mushroom soup).

All in all this fell fractionally short in the food and service stakes, and dramatically short in the value-for-money stakes.

Would I go back? No.
Would I recommend it being worth a visit? No.

Amazing atmosphere and food presentation, food tastes delicious. Staffs are super nice. It is my second time here, enjoyed both times. Last time I came here with my girlfriends catch up for high tea it was amazing. This time I bought my husband and my 6 month old baby for lunch quality as good as last time. Enjoyed everything but its a bit pricy for the portion of food given.

Tableware, decor and food were fantastic. We really enjoyed coming here for my Grandma’s 80th Birthday 🥰 Staff were extremely friendly and welcoming as well.

I was very impressed by this restaurant, after hearing mixed reviews about the place. Their food were lovely presented, fresh and beautifully flavored. We ordered the degustation and there were many memorable dishes. The Beijing duck was crispy but not greasy. The crayfish and the oolong noodles created a nice combination of flavors. The tuna and spring roll was light and refreshing. Even their saffron bread was very nice. It’s very nice to see the fusion of Chinese and European dishes.
It is a little pricey and the service was a little amateur. But definitely worth the experience.

Wow! I was really impressed with this place. The attention to detail in the fit out was exceptional and the food was delicious, fresh, interesting and meticulously presented.

Fusing Chinese and western food together is very challenging, but I think they nailed it.

It is expensive, but it's a special place and the value is definitely there, so we left very happy.

Redwall 1939 brings something new to the table. At first glace, sitting on delicate fine china plates the local New Zealand produce is almost unrecognizable as Chinese food, clothed so beautifully in Western fine dining attire. Once you take a bite though, the unmistakable taste of China comes through. We had the 9 course set menu (pictures below) and we absolutely loved it. The 'Magic Mushroom' (mushroom shaped mantou coated with truffle) and the saffron bread with their home made butter was was especially delightful. Everything was crafted with care and shed a new light on how Chinese food can be presented. Looking forwards to coming again.

We were really disappoint at this restaurant. We loved the atmosphere, the decoration, and the cutleries. But at the end we felt cheated as the food and service was not worth what we had paid for. We came here for a very special occasion therefore booked for their best degustation meal which was $340.00 for two.

What we ate was some cheap food with cheap ingredients. Their highlights were their thinly chopped tofu with very mild and lukewarm soup, pork ribs with deep-fried/ dried mushrooms, a block of chachu salmon with a grilled scallop, single prawn ball coated with shredded kumara, deep-fried fish, boiled vegetables on a ice bowl, 1 dumpling in a bowl and finally for desserts a scoop of ice cream with kumara (which was an odd combination). The pork ribs and dumpling were the only dishes we thought tasted ok. I was impressed with the tofu but the soup was so bland. When we come to have fine dining food, we actually expect high quality ingredients but this place wasted most of their courses on cheap ingredients such as repeatedly using tomatoes, kumara, carrots and boiled vegetables.

The attempts at bringing stories or depth to these dishes were appalling as well. The odd games like guessing what that rolled up celery is or this yellow dumpling means money and green means spiritual or that vague background story of the pork ribs all felt forced and did not add anything to these dishes.

The dishes at the beginning were served really quickly but when the owner came in with a group of guests, our dishes slowed down dramatically. Our assigned "service" person also disappeared at the same time our dishes slowed down and after some time was finally replaced with some other waiters without any notice. One of the most disappointing bit was that we ordered the 9 course Degustation A meal which the main dish was supposed to be the Crayfish however it was changed to pork ribs (the B meal) without any notice to us. A suggestion would be to confirm our meal and let us know if there was going to be any changes. Maybe place our 9 course menu on the table so we can see where we are at.

This is very far from Chinese fine dining. They may have made the dishes look like a piece of art but the taste of these dishes were very far from the taste of food in China. This place had so many things going for them. A wonderful location inside the rose garden, the decoration, atmosphere and cutleries got us really excited to start our meal but when the food came out and the poor service we had received, it had really ruined the evening for us, so much that we had to share this experience so it will not ruin another person's night dining here.

Amazing dining experience. Lot of good surprises. Great service and unique taste. We have been invited to go with some special guests from China, they are also fascinated for the experience. As this is something they don't even have opportunity to try in Shanghai, but heard there are such restaurants in Beijing which showcases the national banquet cuisines. will come again!

My wife and I had a fabulous degustation dinner on Saturday 24th November for our wedding anniversary. The food was spectacular and truly unique, the hand painted tableware is beautiful. Highly recommend for a new dining experience.
