Review Siam Spoon Restaurant - Petone

Mitchell Bidois
After a last minute change of plans, our group was happy to find the Siam Spoon team accommodating and friendly. This was my first visit so I went for a safe staple with an interesting side - fried (chicken) rice with pineapple and roti with lemon butter. I’d have to say I was pleased with both and will happily return for some more adventurous choices from the menu. A bit of food envy helps as the others’ curries looked amazing.

This is my go to restaurant, where I take friends and family for any reason I can think of. The food and the service is always excellent. Just go try it.

My favourite restaurant to visit when I come to Wellington. The food is exceptional and the excellent service is second to none. I'll always keep coming back for more!

Whilst seeing family in Wellington visit, I had a Thai food craving so we dined at a recommended restaurant in Petone by my sister, Siam Spoon. The service and hospitality was excellent because we were warmly greeted and seated without reservations, and attentively looked after throughout the evening. The ambiance and decor was cosy yet exotic. We ordered entrees of Siam Prawns, Tom Kha Gai and Tom Yum Gai. Our soups were fragrant and full bodied in flavour and the tempura prawns were crunchy and juicy. For mains, we ordered Yum Thalay, Pla Ma Now and Matsaman Gai. The mains were exquisite especially my snapper and the seafood salad served extra Thai hot. Our dinner experience was truly wonderful, the cuisine was exemplary and service was fantastic. Highly recommended with distinction!

Everything on the menu looked delicious, so it took us a while to decide. We were very happy with our choices. Food arrived very fast from time of ordering. The video in the background of the dishes being cooked was a nice touch. Highly recommend.

Beautiful setting, lovely soft music. We had our team dinner here. The food is exquisite, tasty, beautifully decorated plate dishes with sculptured accompanying displays. I recommend Siam Spoon as the ultimate restaurant to dine in Petone & Wellington above far exceeds expectation. Thank you Siam Spoon. We will definitely be back 💯

We were a large table and the staff got a little frustrated. The roti was yummy, but the satay sauce was under par. Fresh spring rolls were really good and would definitely recommend. Mr Drunken man said vegan on menu. But had egg added. This isn't okay!!! Hot plate was ordinary at best. All at the table who had curry were all really impressed. Order a curry!!! This seems to be what they are really good at.

Staff were super friendly, the food came out quick and was delish! Definitely coming back!

Excellent Thai food with good size servings. Make sure you get there early in the evening because the place fills up very quickly. Very friendly service.

This restaurant is exceptional. The food has great flavour and is always well presented. The staff are welcoming and efficient. The decor is warm and cosy. The prices give value for money. Like many others who rate this place so highly, I will keep going back. Well done team Siam Spoon!

First time there tonight. We hadn't booked, but we were still welcomed in, even though it was about 9.15pm. The staff were very friendly and the food was to die for! SO DELICIOUS. I will definitely be returning to this restaurant. Thank you for a beautiful meal

Great service and tasty food I'm a big fan of the yellow curry with (chicken) it is my favourite since the first time I went there, to more recently on Friday. Great restaurant I strongly recommend it! :)

Perhaps better to dine in rather than get takeaways! My<br/>Delivery was 30 minutes late and the dish was cold I asked for the heat factor to be medium to hot spice wise and it was milder than mild no flavour what so ever! Prawns were large though.
Jas Frisone
Amazing food as always! Usually we dine in but with a little one it’s not easy, we decided on takeaway instead. Was ready in under half an hour and tasty as always! The roti and peanut sauce never fail to please and their beef Thai salad is an all time fave! Will always recommend and support this place

Used to love the Thai food here, however last time I went the dishes were very bland. Would not go back. Service is friendly however they do not make their dishes as flavourful as they used to.

Jammed packed on a mid week winter's night - this place has good food, fast service and plenty to choose from.  My friend had prawns and I had chicken.  We both walked away stuffed full and will certainly be back.

This is my absolute favourite restaurant! The food is delicious, the service is excellent and the restaurant itself is beautiful. <br/>The owner is lovely and you can tell she's genuinely interested in her customers, she'll often come over to the table and chat. All of the staff have awesome customer service skills and always look and behave impeccably.<br/>My single favourite item would have to be the ka num jaeb (they are amaaaazing!) the curry I order most often is the massaman and it's still delicious when I take home leftovers and eat the next day.<br/>Highly recommend!!
Kristin Raynes
Amazing food and very friendly staff. One of my most favourite restaurants ever. Their green and red curries are the best I have ever had!!!!

Had a horrible experience at this restaurant. I never usually complain at restaurants but the wine I ordered was undrinkable so I politely requested a replacement. The waitress refused and insisted it was fresh, yet when I asked when the wine was opened she said several weeks ago. I would have let it go but the attitude of the waitress was awful and we decided to leave before ordering our meals. She was very rude and confrontational and we didn't want to stay in such an unpleasant environment. I tried to explain to her that by us leaving they were missing out on our business for the sake of 1 cheap glass of wine but she didn't seem to get it, so I paid for the wine that I could only stand one sip of and then left. It was an unfortunate experience as I had heard good things about this restaurant and was looking forward to dining there.

Visited for the first time tonight and we will definitely be back again! The food was delicious and incredible value for money! Staff were friendly and polite as well. Ticked all the boxes!

The food is absolutely equisite and beautifully presented. Lovely cosy atmosphere. The service is faultless and it was an absolute pleasure to dine there.

Food was delicious . I had rung and booked a table at lunchtime for 6.30pm. We arrived on time and were served promptly. In fact we were hurried to place our order. I later learned why. . At 8pm a waitress came and told us to leave as they had booked someone else into our table after I had booked it.  I had left my phone number and had not been rung to inform me. If I had I would have booked somewhere else. The waitress did not seem to understand the reason for my unhappiness. Wont be returning. There are plenty of other restaurants that have far better service. But if all you want is good food and service is not an issue then this can be recommended.,

A fantastic restaurant serving fresh, delicious and authentic Thai food. The decor and establishment is simple and unassuming, with no pretension or trying to pretend to be something they are not. The focus is very much on the food and the service, both of which are great. The Satay Chicken Skewers for the entree is a particular favourite of mine, and the Red Duck Curry a great main option. I am glad to have discovered this little jewel in Petone, and will certainly be back many more times.

Siam spoon is a great vibrant addition to the Jackson Street scene. The decor is beautiful and very inviting. I've dined-in and had takeaways and it's been a mixed bag. The Tom Kha is very fragrant and has a faint sour zing that lingers on the lips; a great appetizer that gets the juices flowing. The Thai beef salad is fresh and light with all the necessary Thai flavours, perfect for summer. The pineapple fried rice is full of fresh turmeric which is uncommon in Thai restaurants here and I applaud them for that! I've heard from a Pad Thai connoisseur that they do an excellent one. Unfortunately the steamed red curry is stodgy and difficult to digest. I was also disappointed that my Drunken Man noodles didn't have even a sliver of Thai basil as advertised; tasty but not what I expected. Overall the food is tasty and suprisingly addictive but lacks heat. If you like spicy food order 'hot' because medium won't cut it at all. The prices are higher than other Thai eateries on the street due to the dine-in experience. Unfortunately there is no discount for takeaways. I'd recommend K Sing for that.

Man, you guys are mean!<br/>Mains from $ 16.50 or so<br/>Whole fish (yes whole) for $25.00. What would you pay in urban Wellington or Auckland.<br/>Staff that went out of the way to fit you in - what do they get from two reviewers?<br/>Nice that they could fit us in late, nothing remarkable<br/>Not top notch.<br/>Not to mention you weren't after cuisine, work drinks had turned into a 'curry run'

Yummy!! Authentic thai food, very delicious and enjoyed by all. Staff were great, was a work night we dined and it was very busy! Defiantly will be returning

On a very busy Saturday night, we tried to see if we could get a last minute table for 5. Luckily we called ahead as the restaurant was full but the staff managed to squeeze us in. The old Lok Lok Steamboat tables have had their soup tureen holders covered over with metal plates, which makes the table surface uneven and awkward to balance glasses and dishes. We shared deep fried chicken curry puffs to begin. I couldn't go past the name 'Mr Drunk Man' for my main course and chose the lamb option for this stir fried noodle dish. The flavours were good with a refreshing combination of chili, lime and basil. My partner's kang phet pet yang (duck red curry) was very rich and we both had side orders of roti. The staff were frantically busy on a hectic evening but still managed to serve us in good time. BYO corkage is a reasonable $3.50.

THE best massaman curry I have EVER had. Superb service and lovely decor. Siam Spoon is now a fave of ours and we go regularly :o) I am introducing another two friends to the restaurant tonight. Deeeeeeeeeeeeeelicious!

Good food but not knockout good. <br/>The food was exactly what it said it would be and was pleasant, just didn't give us the wow factor. I am not sure why. In saying that we would go back if other places near by were full. <br/>The service was very good and the staff were very pleasant. It has been decorated very nicely and was nice and warm. I loved the serving bowls which were like huge spoons.

Dined here last night - late on a Wednesday evening. It was the most pleasant Thai dining experience that I've had in a long time. A lovely Nepalese girl greeted us warmly. She set up a table in the front window with a heater turned towards our table. The owner then came over and turned up the heater as she greeted us. The music was nice a soft in the background. The menu seemed a bit but more authentic than others in the area. We ordered a steamed prawn and chicken sort of dumpling. It was fresh a delicious. I then ordered the duck red curry and my partner had the house special chicken with chili, veggies, and cashews. The portion sizes were generous without being too big. It was nice to see sticky rice on offer. Overall, the flavours were very well balanced with the heat. 4 stars for the food and 4.5 for the service! I will definitely be back. Oh ya....BYO charge only $3.50   ;-)

My partner and I went for lunch here a couple of weeks ago. The decor is absolutely beautiful and our server was very nice, welcoming and attentive. They have a lunch menu that is very affordable. Portion sizes were appropriate for lunch, and very flavorsome. My partner and I both had curries (panang and green curry) and both had a distinct taste from each other which is really great- oftentimes when you order multiple thai curries from some places I've found they end up tasting quite similar for some reason or other. All in all I had a lovely meal from Siam Spoon, it is definitely one to try.

Have eaten in here once and the food was delicious - very fresh and homemade tasting and looking food. Generous portions of prawns, chicken etc. <br/>We got takeaways tonight and it was very disappointing. I orderded the steamed dimsim for entree - they had no flavour whatsoever and it was $8.50 for 3 dimsims which seemed very over priced.<br/>I then had the Chicken, basil and vege stir fry. This too lacked flavour and the veges tasted like they were from a frozen packet. It cost $24 all up which was a total rip off and very disappointing. I will not order takeaways from this place again.

Wanting to go somewhere completely different the hubby and I ended up at Siam Spoon in Petone. we walked in at about 5:30pm on a Saturday night and the place was deserted. What we presume was the owner greeted us right away and looked a bit panicked when we said we didn't have a booking. Within 15 minutes of being seated we worked out why - the place suddenly became very crowded. We got the impression everyone else in the place were loyal regulars. The environment is very clean and pleasant, the staff very attentive - they bow slightly when leaving your table. The owner was very involved front of house and obviously runs the place with an iron fist. It's the stuff Gordon Ramsay is made of and I have never seen it in an eatery in NZ before. It's great! We were looked after and treated with utmost respect as diners. The food (pictured) was full of aromatic fragrances and flavours, and presented beautifully. The winner for us was the roti with a divine peanut sauce. We will no doubt return.<br/><br/>*****I uploaded photos but they seem to have not saved here - they are in the photo section though*****<br/><br/>Here's what the hubby thought:<br/><br/>"Looking for somewhere different bought us here on Saturday night.<br/> Warmly greeted on our arrival, and after admitting we didn't have a booking we were seated and watered. She ordered dumpling-type things, and a red curry duck. I did the roti with peanut sauce, a chicken soup-type dish with coconut milk and a beef Mr Drunken Man. <br/>All the dishes were great - the peanut sauce with the roti was incredible, and my soup was a flavour explosion. Surprised then I was with the Mr Drunken Man - after the 'shock & awe' of the previous dishes this was surprisingly bland and resembled something I'd make at home. That's not to say it was bad in any way, or not as described on the menu; it just didn't kick me the way the previous dishes did.<br/> Her duck got a glowing report, and I might have that next time. And there will be a next time - what a great night. Three entrees, two mains and two soft drinks for $64.00."

Good food - nice service. Nothing remarkable but nice that they let us in late night. The steamed whole fish was excellent. The other dishes - five that we ordered were good. The vegetables are fresh and perfectly cooked. There are several other Thai options nearby - but I'd go back. You have to bring your own wine because they don't sell it there.

What a great night out!  We were pleasantly surprised by the great quality of the food, which tasted wonderful.  The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and the staff were amazingly friendly, helpful and obliging.<br/>We will definitely be going back to sample some more of the menu. <br/>Great value for money and highly recommend.

The recently opened Siam Spoon restaurant in Jackson Street Petone has to be one of the best Thai restaurants that I have ever had the pleasure of dining in.<br/><br/>As soon as you walk into the restaurant, you are immediately warmly greeted by a very friendly waitress with traditional Thai styled mannerisms and escorted to your table. The inside of the restaurant is nicely decorated with traditionally Thai golden ornaments and elephant pictures on the walls .<br/><br/>The menu has much to choose from and has a full range of Thai dishes including entrees, soup, noodles and rice, vegetable and tofu, stir fried dishes, fish dishes, curry dishes (medium spicy or hot), spicy salad dishes, and desserts. Prices are very reasonable ranging from $4.50 for a roti with peanut sauce to $23.50 for a a deep fried fish with sweet and sour sauce dish.<br/><br/>On the Saturday evening we dined here a few weeks ago, the place was extremely busy. So it would be definitely advisable to make a table booking early.<br/><br/>We selected the roti with lemon butter at $4.50, deep fried curry puffs at $6.50, chicken pad thai at $15.50, a prawn pha naeng curry at $19.50, and the deep fried whole fish dish at $23.50<br/><br/>Our table of four friends really enjoyed these wonderful dishes. Everything was so favoursome and beautifully presented. And the service was friendly, reasonably fast, and efficient.<br/><br/>We look forward to returning to this wonderful Siam Spoon Thai restaurant again very soon!!

How great to find a decent authentic Thai restaurant in Petone. The woman who greeted us was very friendly and attentive without being too overbearing. She was very helpful with menu choices. The food was delicious and reasonably priced. The chairs were very comfortable which made it easier to stay on chatting after the meal.

We thought we'd try somewhere new for Thai. This place was lovely. Very busy on a Thursday night so I'm glad we booked. On arrival a charming lady greeted us with a kind smile and from then on the service was very good and so polite. The food was good and our table pleasant (not getting knocked every 5mins or by the cold doorway/toilets). It was all reasonably priced too.

Hands down, the best place to eat Thai food for me and my family ^^    The food is delicious and very well present,  a great range of Entrees and Mains, we loved all food we ordered and because we have been there so many times so we have tried many of them in the menu, our most favorite such as Pla Sam Rod, Lap Kai, Ho Mok, Prawn Pad Thai, and the new dish is Yum Salmon with lemongrass are not to be missed ^^    The ambience is classic Thai modern style with the most relaxing atmosphere, lovely friendly staff from the kitchen to front. We look forward to returning again sometime soon. Highly recommend

Siam Spoon is the latest Thai restaurant on Jackson Street in Petone. I've been wanting to try it out since it opened a couple of months ago. <br/><br/>It was very busy for a Wednesday night. We got taken to a table and promptly offered menus and water. <br/><br/>For entrées, we ordered chicken Tom Yum and Roti with Satay. <br/><br/>The Tom Yum was very well-balanced and packed with flavour. <br/><br/>The Roti was great - very fluffy. The housemade Satay was just divine. <br/><br/>For mains, we got Pad Thai and Mr. Drunk Man (a noodle dish I've never heard of before). Both meals were simply delicious; I simply can't fault them. <br/><br/>In addition to this, the service was really good, even though the two waitresses were run off their feet (there was an ad at the window for another waitress). <br/><br/>We paid $45, which was a fantastic value for the amount of delicious food we had.<br/><br/>We'll be definitely back very soon.

Fantastic staff and the service was above and beyond. The food was amazing as was the atmosphere. we were even given little valentines day chocolates at the end of the meal. would defiantly go back AA+

4th time out tonight at Siam Spoon in Petone and yet another great meal, we recommended it after our first time and continue to recommend. The ambiance, decor, staff and beautiful food make this the best local Thai restaurant, add to that the fantastic value, so cheap! and it is a real winner.<br/>The waitresses are switched on and so beautiful in their traditional Thai outfits, great attention to detail, I am working my way through the menu and as a Vegetarian, some restaurants can be challenging to my lifestyle choice, not so here, but regardless of meat eating or not, every meal shares the same quality, fresh, fresh, fresh, perfectly spiced and presented, for the  three of us and our BYO wine to enjoy a sumptuous feast for under $80 simply brilliant, so please pay them a visit, you wont regret it, did I mention the staff are gorgeous?

I visited this place with my family and on a very busy Friday night, the service was great and the food even better! I ordered the Mr Drunk Man and my partner ordered the Lab Kai, Both dishes were full of flavor! Love love love! We will definitely visit agin for the great food and lovely service!

We dined in on Tuesday for a table of two. It was quite a very busy night for a Tuesday. Lovely atmosphere and very nice decoration and music was pretty relaxing. We ordered Lab Kai - chicken salad and Pla Med, the meal was very tasty and delicious. We got what we asked for; pretty authentic and real Thai flavour. We will definitely be back again. We are a local people and the restaurant is not too far from my house so took a lovely walk home after dinner. Overall I give 5 stars to Siam Spoon restaurant.<br/><br/>Lovely dining experience!

This is a fairly new restaurant in Petone, having been open only a few weeks. We dined here recently on a Friday night, a night of the week that you would expect most restaurants to be busy, especially in Jackson Street, Petone, which is the dining hub of the Hutt Valley. However there were only two other tables occupied when we entered.<br/><br/>The decor is pleasant and initial impressions were good. My partner and I ordered two mains: Pha Naeng Curry (chicken, curry paste, coconut cream, vegetables and crushed peanuts), and Pad Mad Mamuang (stir fried pork with Thai chilli paste, crushed peanuts, vegetables and cashew nuts). I ordered a lemon, lime and bitters, but was brought a glass of ginger beer: first bad sign. The food was brought to our table in reasonable time, but on tasting the dishes we were disappointed to find that they lacked anything approaching the distinctive Thai flavours one would expect.  The chicken curry was very bland: no hint of lemongrass and the coconut milk seemed to have been watered down considerably. It lacked the balance of sweet, sour, hot and salty. I appreciate that recipes will be adapted somewhat to allow for the use of local produce, but I would have expected something slightly more exotic than peas, carrots and beans. The pork stir fry had a little more flavour, but once again, not much in the way of Thai flavours here either. Both dishes were more like what you could expect from a Chinese takeaway.<br/><br/>While not an expensive menu, at $17.50 for our mains, we did not think these were value for money. The final straw was when the waiter tried to remove our dishes from the table while we were still eating. With other more high-quality Thai restaurants in Petone, Siam Spoon is not really in the running, and we will not be returning.
