Review Queen Of Jackson - Petone

Food was delicious- nice and fresh. We walked in without a booking and a large group and were welcomed. Will definitely visit again.

Had a lovely dinner at Queen of Jackson. It’s very much a sharing plates kind of place. Plates are reasonably priced with a wide variety of options ranging from Asian to South American cuisine. They also cater for a variety of dietary requirements. The food was excellent and we received regular and friendly service. They had a decent tap menu for beers and a great range of cocktails. If you are looking for a great place to meet up with friends for a drink and a meal, you’ll definitely love Queen of Jackson. I know I’ll be back!

Great food and service, it all came out really fast

What a surprise! A smart, delicious and tasty tapas menu. Enough craft beers to satisfy the most thirsty beer connoisseur and a hip, urban vibe. Be sure to book a table

Really enjoyed our food. The sauces were flavorful. The batter on our chicken and calamari were light, and they were nice and crispy. The restaurant and toilets were clean.

A Petone regular & favourite, with plenty of tap beers changing by the week and a sweet tapas menu that also changes regularly depending on availability. Head upstairs and check out the rooftop bar in particular!

I can only comment on the drinks. We go here for date nights and always enjoy it. The wine list is a good variety, love the extensive list of cocktails. Even has mocktail options. Our friendly bartender also made the best cocktail for me by swapping out some ingredients on our request. Was amazing!

We sat in the rooftop area and the service was fantastic. The meal was excellent and just seemed to keep coming with no gaps. The staff had no problems catering for one of our party of 14 who had special requirements. The only issue I had was it was very noisy and late in the evening when it rained the rain was coming in the patio blind. Well done to all.

This place is awesome! The food is delicious, their dinner banquet is such great value and oh so yummy! Great range of drinks and cocktails and all the staff are super friendly and attentive. Shout out to newbie Blake who did a fab job! We will definitely be returning.

We organised the roof bar for a little memorial get together after one of our work colleagues passed away. Nothing was too much trouble for the QoJ crew. Ordered some platters of food and wedges - delicious food, lovely staff and great beer. The roof bar (I think mostly open during summer months) is a great little private place for such a gathering. Thank you Queens on Jackson for looking after us for a special little gathering. Excellent all round.

Popped into Queen of Jackson with a friend after a matinee performance of a play. We ordered 3 plates..duck liver mousse..wagyu beef dumplings...and smoked salmon wings. Yum yum yum!! The waitress was friendly and helpful. Will definitely be back

Had funny experience at Queen of Jackson last night - lady who greeted us when we entered wouldn't let us buy a drink from the bar, she insisted we be served at our table and said they were a predominantly 'table service' bar. The wine list was withheld and I had no choice but to go and sit down and wait (and wait) for someone to come and serve me. We were meeting a large group, and of course, chaos ensued when we left when we needed to pay. Also, we only had half an hour, and ten minutes of that was used up by waiting at the table to be served, when I could have just bought a drink on my way in. Silly system guys, when its a group surely just letting people go up to the bar and pay as they go would make things easier for everyone?

A colleague and i dined here tonight and were absolutely impressed with every single dish we ordered! We ordered 6 tapa dishes in total and every single one was full of flavor and delighted our taste buds. The service was outstanding too, and each dish came out very quicky. Im so pleased i stumbled across this restaurant in Trip Advisor and will definitely be back on one of my many business trips in the area.

Had dinner with friends on Fri night, awesome food and friendly staff and great service. We suppose to leave at 8pm cos there was another booking but the staff let us stayed at where we were so we dont have to leave. TQ. Maybe we were too hungry we ordered 9 plates of food + 4 desserts + coffee
Matt Dobbs
love this place, good beer (apart from boundary road), good atmosphere but best of all great staff. Attentive, friendly and relaxed. If i owned my own bar I'd like it to be like Queen of Jackson.

Absolutely love this place! My sisters and I had dinner here tonight, the food was delicious, Our waitress was just lovely. We will definitely be back!

Delicious food, have a seperate dietary menu. Great drinks range. Will definitely be back
Paul Kitchen
Loved the Brussels sprouts in candied bacon, you have turned something inherently evil into a dish I would be happy to order again. The food was all round outstanding! Looking forward to coming back minus the car keys to try some of the great craft beers you have listed on the wall! We were looked after very well by (?Billie?)
Linda Southern
I love the food. It is amazing. The staff are lovely. Why oh why can't hot drinks be served hot? 4 of us ordered tea and coffee yesterday. One in particular ordered extra hot. No they were all lucky to be called lukewarm.
Brady Dyer
Best food, best drinks, best vibe - can’t ask for much more!!

Thanks to Alex and staff at Queen of Jackson for putting on the Karma Keg for our son, Mitchell's, under 14 Wellington rep basketball tour to Melbourne. Fantastic cheers

Our group popped in after a function on a quiet Tuesday night. The service was amazing, bringing out food and making sure glasses of water were available on the table without being asked. The food was great, and the staff were having fun and super friendly. Better than just good old fashioned service, they went above and beyond. So good that I felt compelled to post a review and call.
Jenny Bramwell
Love this place. Food is so tasty and beautifully presented. Staff are awesome and absolutely love love love the roof top bar.

Meredith Sanderson
loved it :) food was awesome, wait staff was awesome... considering we had no idea where we wanted to go, these peeps delivered to two fussy bearches

Queen never disappoints, staff always greet you with a smile and their energy and charisma continues throughout the evening, everytime. Food is fabulous every single time. The only thing that makes me sad is the chips have been removed off the menu. The chips were always cooked to perfection and no other place does them as well as queen so they will be missed.

Super quick & friendly service, with a quirky atmosphere. The salt & pepper squid was for sure a highlight along with the beef dumplings, not to mention the spicy bloody mary!

Good range of beers, for the Hutt Valley and cheaper than next door (Butcher & Brewer)<br/><br/>Friendly staff and nice quiet atmosphere, good place for a catchup and a chat<br/><br/>They close 11pm most nights, so have to head into Welly city after that, or grab some fill your own (flagons) from Baylands around the corner (earlier)

Our evening was interrupted my a simple mistake that could have been easily put right and what a shame the owner spoke to us like she did, some compassion would have been nice. We had had a drink spilt all over my friends phone and all over her top and over our bowl of fries which to be fair were nearly gone but in all honesty, it was the interaction with the owner that stunned all of us. We asked her politely what she thought was a reasonable outcome and she said replacing the drink was enough and we asked her what about the fries and she said it isn't worth the argument... we were shocked that she wasn't happy about removing the fries from the bill. It was a shame we were well known customers and us 3 had a night spoilt by a simple mistake that could have been easily put right instead it left us with a sour taste in our mouths. Again a little compassion was all we wanted<br/>, sad to say we won't be back if the owner speaks to her customers like that i wonder how much she values her customers.

Went on a whim with no expectations.  My daughter and I had tapas from the all day menu and they were amazing.  This is a place you can easily overeat at, though it designed to suit all appetites.  The chicken karaage was superb with a crisp kimchi slaw, the mushrooms rendang delicious, the pork belly melt in the mouth.  The flavours were subtle and surprising.  excellent presentation.  Good range of "vegetable" options but the meat options were the highlight for us.  Selection of on tap ciders that were enjoyable and not overly sweet.   Friendly staff and prompt service though it wasn't overly full on the week night we went.  Need to go again.

After the All Blacks test match at Westpac Stadium we got a train back to Petone. The kitchen was still open at 10pm and the Tapas type small plates were excellent. We had dumplings, squid and fish balls ....all homemade and absolutely delicious!! Lots of craft beer on offer and the homemade cider is fabulous!!!
Shlomi Phillips
WOW the food here was amazing, I would love to go through their entire menu and try everything... This is my favourite place to go... The best food that I have ever had
Jade Amber
Love all of the food here, the parmesan fries are to die for! Great place to go if your with a few friends and you all want to share and have a taste of multiple dishes. Good wine list and so many beers to choose from if that's your thing!
Sarah McTaggart
Absolutely amazing!! Every small plate (like tapas) was delicious and such beautiful tastes with every dish. Great service too. The squid was cooked to perfection and you must pay the Brussel Sprouts dish!!
Ronel Kapp
Love this place! Excellent interior, comfortable booths and a long communal table that is perfect for making friends over their extensive bar menu. I had the strawberry and lime lime cider, refreshing. The meals that came past my table looked appetizing and is reasonably priced.

Pretty much the only cocktail bar in Petone and it's one of my favourites in the Wellington area. They've got cocktails and also a HUGE selection of local beers on tap (even a mulled wine and mulled cider!). To complement their impressive assortment of drinks they have some of the best tapas in town too. With something different whilst also ticking the ol' favourites. A 'must-try' for anyone looking to go high brow in Petone.

I love going to the Queen of Jackson for a beer or two. Choosing from the menu on the wall. The food has so much flavour. At first I thought I won't get full on these but we definitely did. Prefect. Love the theme they have too.
Gaylene Nankivell
Had one of the worst experiences of rudeness from one of the staff (I was called "a piece of work" because I complained about the lack of service at the end) and a litany of problems from our reservation being cancelled by the staff, being told (not asked) we would be seated on barstools, to finally be "pointed", not shown, towards a table not yet cleared, to waiting over an hour for our food to be served after it was ordered with no mention or explanation about the delay, to then being charged for the "complementary drinks" that we were offered because we had to wait for a table to come free. On top of that the burgers were far too salty. <br/>...Won't be back...
Peter
Interesting style but it works. Food was excellent, well presented and yummy. With a party of five, 2 plates each was more than enough. Beats a pub meal any day.
Neat Eats
Have been a number of times with partner, family (including 3yo who they made a chocolate milkshake for though it's not on the menu) and groups of girlfriends. Consistently good, which I appreciate. Can sit downstairs for more informal dining, or upstairs for a more restaurant feel. My faves are the beef dumplings, salt and pepper squid, chicken karaage and lately, the brussel sprouts. Always friendly service and a good variety of beers available. Cocktails are good too!
Octagon Pie
Love love love. Atmosphere was amazing, cocktails were aaamazing and beautifully presented and the hot chips were $9 and the best i've ever tried! Will be coming back here again.

Went there for a work function and was pleasantly pleased with this hidden gem! Was busy inside, the atmosphere was great and the food and drink delicious!

I don't really get the fuss with this place. The presentation of the place is great and the rooftop bar is cool. Staff are friendly and seem to know their stuff. Their does seem to be an obsession though with spice, and strange ingredients. What an uncultured swine I am for not knowing what the weird stuff is, but there is a slight air of pretentiousness - would be good if there were quick written explanations as to what all those ingredients are. Had to wait an hour and a half for steak to come out. It was just strips of steak with a heap of salt and some mustard stuff. I would go back to enjoy a quick drink but would not bother with the food, no matter what I get I never seem to enjoy it.

Went here for my partners birthday in October. With a Coeliac daughter it's really hard to go out for dinner, especially with her being 4. This place was FANTASTIC. The staff were very accommodating and our daughter was able to eat everything we ordered except the flatbreads as not GF.<br/><br/>They checked what meals she would be eating and informed their kitchen. She was so happy because she was allowed to try so many meals (Pulled pork Tacos, pork belly, chips, salt n pepper squid).<br/><br/>No reaction from her (and if she's had gluten reaction time is within 30minutes of eating) so obviously good care was taken with preparing the food.<br/><br/>My only negatives was the pork belly was quite tough and they didn't specify what drinks where gluten free.<br/>Price was also great cost just over $100 to feed all three of us + drinks.<br/><br/>Overall a very good experience and we will definitely be back again :).
Nani
Cool place though pretty loud when it's busy of course. Really interesting delicious menu and making a few veggie-friendly changes was no trouble for them. Also great drinks/beer selection. Higher end of my budget but worth it!

I simply love this place. It is my kind of Bar and gets the 'don't mind walking in alone' stamp of approval. I have been in for drinks many times, often pre-dinner. Last night me and a friend decided to eat here.<br/>We met early evening  on a Tuesday and had a booth.  The bar area wasn't busy but the food was flying out of the kitchen and heading upstairs.<br/>After listening to the advice we ordered 4 dishes and they were all excellent, the servings were a very good size and we were defiantly full. The presentation was excellent and I love the generous serving of sauces on all dishes. Another great thing was how the portions were easy to share.<br/><br/>Our dishes were<br/>Warm cauliflower salad, lemon yoghurt, chili, mint <br/>Fig & blue cheese flatbread, prosciutto, rocket, mozzarella<br/>Triple cooked hand cut fries & aioli<br/>Chicken karaage, sesame slaw, sriracha, japanese mayo<br/>I can honestly say, I couldn't pick a favourite.

YUM! High quality tapas/small plates that change regularly according to season - and they are great. Highly recommend the dumpling in chilli sauce and the duck liver parfait.

First time here with friends today and it was excellent .... it seems to be the kind of place that works better if you are dining with 4 or more people. For $25 each you get the choice of two tapas meals and a drink (lunch).... so if there are 10 of you, you can virtually order that entire menu and share it all. That's what we did today - we ordered all but 3 of the $25 each menu and had more food than we could finish.  It was a good place to be on a Saturday afternoon chillaxing with friends over beersies. The food was very good and the staff very attentive. We will go back I'm sure ...<br/> <br/>December 2016: We had our work Christmas do here. It happened to be on one of the hottest days in 2016! No air-con !!! Food still exceptional though :-)

QOJ is a great bar/eatery in Petone. Nice collection of craft beer and food, with a good rooftop area. I ate here about a year ago and thoroughly enjoyed it.<br/><br/>Today we popped in for lunch. We were offered the $25 pp menu - you get a drink and two sharing plates.<br/><br/>We ordered<br/>* Fig and blue cheese flat bread w/prosciutto and rocket<br/>* Cauliflower salad<br/>* Pulled pork Cuban roll<br/>* Chicken and Kimchi with Japanese mayo.<br/><br/>Food took 10 mins or so, served as they were ready. Presentation was fantastic on each dish. We were told each dish was small, but they were a good size.<br/><br/>The cauliflower salad missed the mark. Nice dish, well presented and cauliflower was perfect texture, but it lacked flavour and the cumin didn't work for us. Shame.<br/><br/>The pulled pork was nice, great flavours - slightly too much mustard but it was enjoyable.<br/><br/>The chicken was tasty and juicy. The Kimchi was pickled cabbage rather than fermented cabbage. But I preferred this. Lovely coating on the chicken. Worked well with the mayo. Great dish.<br/><br/>The flat bread was the highlight of the meal. Great ingredients all complimenting each other. Light and fresh.<br/><br/>$50 for lunch was reasonable value - enjoyable.

The kimchi fried chicken is quite surprising good, and love the cauliflower with yoghurt sauce! Like the warmness here! The burgers are quite nice as well and very pretty look

Popped in last night for a drink and was promptly greeted by a lovely waitress who helped us to decide on cocktails and obliged our request to take a snap of us. Drinks arrived quickly and were very tasty but maybe a little too sweet. Love the set up, especially the rooftop bar and monopoly table. Played great music too!

Love having drinks here. Menu is a bit pricy but nice for nibbles! It is a bit upmarket and nice to have this sort of food at a beer/wine bar.

We came here to see if the food and atmosphere could live up to the promise of the decor. It was a Sunday afternoon, and we decided to take a seat outside. We ordered off the menu (the dinner menu). We got sliders ($16) and a plate of salmon ($15).<br/><br/>It was not a rewarding experience. The servings were barely appetiser sized. <br/><br/>First, the salmon. It was four or five pieces of salmon, like the ones you buy for $7/100g from pak'n'save. It was served with some grapefruit segments, ponzu jelly (ponzu is a citrus sauce, it tastes like soy), and borage. It was okay, but it lacked cohesion. More than that, it was just appalling value. The whole thing was a couple of centimetres tall. thing salmon slices with a few cubes of jelly, grapefruit and some flowers. <br/><br/>The sliders were quite tasty: the saurkraut and dressing were a good combo, and they complemented the pastrami well. But, again, the value: this was $5.33 each, for some lunch meat in a bun. In some places, that kind of money will fill you up. Here, the word 'snack' would be too much of a word to describe what we had. I left feeling like the welcoming restaurant was a facade for a cynical and contemptuous  desire to charge a lot and deliver very little. <br/><br/>The service was good and friendly, and the food, presumably because of the complete lack of anything to really do, came quickly. But, I was so disappointed with the food that a return trip is well and truly off the cards.  Don't come here if you're hungry. or if you have a tendency to think about what kind of bang (or borage) you want for your buck.

Quirky industrial-chic decor with a hard working team that provide an excellent service. Food is varied and abundant. Worth a night out from the city. Can't wait to come back and have a beer in the garden bar. <br/><br/>You can tell that heaps of hard work has gone into this project. Thanks team :)

So far have only had drinks. Atmosphere has been good, seems popular. Friends tell me the food is very good so must try. Good range of beers. Not so sure on wine list.<br/><br/>Rating only based on atmosphere and visiting for drinks, so this is my interim rating pending having a meal.<br/><br/>UPDATED as of 23 Nov 2014<br/><br/>I had to be in Petone for other reasons and with a little time to spare I decided to pop into Queen of Jackson for a drink. As it was a lovely sunny Sunday afternoon I decided to climb the stairs to the recently opened rooftop bar. Boy, I am glad I did so because not only is the rooftop worth visiting I had the chance to better appreciate the thought and care that has gone into the decor of this place. The Queen sells a great range of bottled and draft beers, in addition the design of the decor exhibits a quirky style that works for me. I seized the chance to take some photos which demonstrate some of what I mean. The style goes a long way to creating the excellent ambiance I find in this place.<br/> Had the opportunity to chat to one or two of the staff helpful and friendly, all of which makes this a better place.<br/><br/>Now I really must go back and sample more of the brews and eat some food.<br/><br/>UPDATED as of 8 Dec 2014<br/><br/>Well I called in a few days ago to meet a friend, whilst waiting I decided to try a snack. My choice for better or worse was the Ruben, a bagel with sauerkraut, cornichons, and pastrami. Frankly it was disappointing. It might have been an off-day, other people there were consuming other food with every sign of satisfaction, but my Ruben was a poor thing. I will give this place another chance everything else on my visit was fine. Just to me the Ruben was not a Ruben.<br/><br/>UPDATED October 2015<br/><br/>Was at a function here the other night. Great finger food, pleasantly served. Good atmosphere. My view of the food is that it is much better than the Ruben I commented on some months ago. Would go more regularly if in Petone.

Had a really good meal at Queen of Jackson, the decor is really funky and the the place was packed, which made for a really good atomosphere.  I started with a Black Dorris Plum cocktail which was amazing and then moved onto a wine (pretty good wine list), which I have to say is quite expensive and the servings are small.  Onto the food, we decided to get a selection of small plates and each one was delicious, I could not fault any of them, In particular I loved the pigs tails and the celeriac slaw - delicious!  Will be going back for sure, highly recommend.

Great outlet , food was top notch , Great service , a welcome addition to Petone
Michael Parsons
QoJ is still very new as I write this; their full dinner menu isn't available till next week... But the platters we got were fantastic; subtle and interesting flavours. Even the bowl of chips came with sauces that were a cut above the usual without being priced above the competition. We'll be back to try the mains.<br/>As for beer, they have an array of craft beers as you'd expect from a bar that's part of the 'craft beer capital' collective.<br/>The seating caters for all, from intimate tables for two upstairs to booths and a big congregational table downstairs.<br/>QoJ is a welcome addition to the craft beer and good food options in Petone; we'll definitely be back.
David
The service and food were excellent, lots of small sharing dishes a great experience, tried a lot of things we wouldn't usually and really enjoyed it, the raw salmon and kingfish dishes and the beef tongue the sliders and smoked kahawai were also very nice
Amanda
It's so lovely to have a bar on Jackson Street that appeals to women. Interesting quirky decor. The well chosen wine list (a number of my faves on there) and the cocktails are delicious (my favourite is the 'kiss me Kate' with Black Dorris Plum). <br/>Going in for dinner, after a friend had highly recommended the place, I was very surprised by the presentation and flavours of the sharing plates my husband and I ordered, and how well they filled you. I ordered things I wouldn't normally order let alone attempt to make at home (Duck liver mousse, pigs tails, beetroot cured salmon, Cauliflower salad) all delicious! I couldn't say which was my favourite.<br/>Very attentive staff. The friendly waitress wouldn't give up the cauliflower salad recipe but had said it's been open for 4 weeks now. Wow. Wish I had come in earlier. Fabulous addition to Petone. We will definitely be back.
Brent Wong
Had heard good things about this place from friends, it has only been open a few weeks, so decided to pop in for a quick dinner. <br/><br/>The place has the look and fell of a really nice bar with a great selection of craft tap beers, wines and cocktails. <br/><br/>But what we were most pleasantly surprised by was the amazing food. It’s a sharing tapas style of menu, with a real cross section of flavours, so something to suit everyone. <br/><br/>Our favourite dish was the Chicken Bits, lovingly deep fried bits of moist chicken with sesame coleslaw and a yummy sauce. This was followed closely by the duck liver Mouse with Brioche in second place. <br/><br/>The service was just right, knowledgeable and there when you needed them, but not leaning over you all night. <br/><br/>I think this is just the kind of place Petone needed, well done guys and we will be back.

Worth a visit. Beers good and the food is excellent. A table of 3 with a bottle of wine, half a dozen pints of dark beer and about eight little plates cost around $220.
