Review Mr Ji's Kitchen - Petone

Cabnolen Moon
We had the Peking duck 3 ways, the first course that meat portion was a little smaller than the other restaurant nearby, but their stir fry and the soup is better. Their eggplant dish is well loved, but their chilli oil beef was very bland, not recommended. The whole restaurant was also very cold and we all had to eat with our puffer jacket on.

We are happen that Mr Ji’s kitchen moved to lower Hutt, right next to Queensgate. Close to where we live. We were enjoy food as usual. The restaurant is bigger than before. We are highly recommend to people who craving for Northern Chinese food. Come to Mr Ji’s. Special hotpot, dry hotpot and meat pancake blue cod dish must order. Authentic peking duck in three ways as your choose. Full house almost everyday since they moved to new place. Best wishes to Mr Ji’s kitchen.

Me Ji's was BUSY. Unfortunately they were short staffed but they were all over the place doing an amazing job. The food was delicious. We had crab and cheese dumplings, wontons, szechuan beef and pork pancakes. Considering how busy and short staffed they were, we got the food surprisingly fast.

Gluten free magic!! Not well advertised but they can make many of the dishes Gluten Free, this is why we went!! Faultless Sizzling Black Pepper Beef, so tender it melted in my mouth with a delicious spicy pepper flavor, but it’s the sweet and sour pork that I came for, soo tasty, crispy, sweet and lots of pork. The dumplings looked amazing and I’m going back for the crispy tofu and I don’t even usually like tofu.

Great service! Definitely need to try their Peking duck!! We went there to try their Peking duck which is recommended by many people. The skin is cooked pretty crispy and with the thin pancakes the dish tastes absolutely amazing. The hotpot of beef strips is also delicious but a little too spicy. Overall it's a nice place to have good food with great portion sizes.

One of the best Chinese Noodles and Chicken that I have had. I ordered the Chicken fried noodles and salt and pepper chicken. Noodles had great flavour and Chicken was crispy. Would surely recommend. And customer service was great.

Delicious blue cod fish in black bean sauce. Looking forward to trying the rest of the menu. This place is a hidden gem. A real iykyk type place

Ordered cumin lamb for delivery. It came with a small portion; however, the food itself costed 25 dollars. The food did not taste good at all. It tasted like deep fried flour filled up with air. I couldn't even tell if they have put much meat inside. It just tasted hard and was soaked in the saurce. Very bad experience. Very disappointed.

fantastic food and good service. definitely go back with family😀

I’ve given them a go a couple of times, the food is average at best. This time there was practically no flavour, but at least I got a couple of pieces of metal/stone that I almost broke my teeth on for free!

Take away menu is very good. great variety and very tasty. service is good. Flavour is more on the western style but you get more of an authentic taste here then other spots. dumplings are great! take away seafood menu is only 2 dishes so if wanting a fish dish then sit in, which i recommend. decor is average but I am of the mind as long as my dishes are clean and the toilets are tidy i will eat anywhere. I definitely advise to try their Hofun ( rice noodle dishes) which is yummy however which way you have it. my go to are always dumplings which are awesome here..

After living in living in Lower Hutt for the last 12 months and driving past Mr Jis weekly we decided to give it a try. I am disappointed that we didn't sooner! We got the fried noodles, chicken and vegetables and orange beef and oh my!<br/><br/>Flavors were delicious, portioned generously and fast service. This will definitely become a regular spot for us now.

This was our first time getting Chinese takeaways from Mr Ji's kitchen after trying at least 6 other establishments for Chinese over the past few years with mixed results.<br/>Wow, the taste was great!<br/>Wontons made in store and were lovely. Sweet and Sour Pork our fussy 12 year old was loving and Lemon chicken that was quite nice too.<br/>Rice has to be purchased separately so this isn't a cheap takeaways night out for a family of 4. We spent $80 On the two mains, 2x rice and noodles and 2 four packs of wontons.<br/>The lemon chicken was on a bed of cabbage which wasn't to my liking, but the Sweet and sour had pineapple pieces that had to have come from a fresh pineapple, that is great. <br/>The amount of food would be on the smaller side, but the taste was amongst the best!
The Mad Diner
The best combination fried noodles aka chowmein, I have had since I used to frequent the old-school style Hop Louie in Chinatown, Los Angeles.  Everything I have had on the menu is excellent.  I am lucky to have this as an option for work lunches.   A really great Chinese place overall, a welcome oasis in the flood of cheap Chinese takeaways and "restaurants" in the area.  Highly recommended and a great place for a group to have a feed!

Ordered via Deliver Easy - mostly ok but definitely not the best Chinese food we’ve had! Crispy chicken wasn’t crispy, more like a roast chicken with more bones than meat. Pork belly was not what we expected, more like stir fry vege with bacon - weird.

Love the authentic food, great place to go to as a group or party #tripe #fungus delicious kai! Cumin Chicken was so lite and refreshing. Squid, salt chicken so yummy!

Went here and I got food poisoning! Street appeal is shocking, looks dodgy and i wonder what the kitchen looks like. Food itself isn’t shocking but room for improvement. reviews I see are kind of a mixed bag so maybe they need to go for consistency?

Ohh Mr Ji......love your food.<br/><br/>Super delicious meals .<br/><br/>Can't fault for anything.<br/><br/>Very impressed.<br/><br/>Highly recommended.<br/><br/>Gotta try it at least once.<br/><br/>Good luck with the parking though.

Easily the best Chinese Restaurant on Jackson Street, not only for value but raw taste and portioning.<br/>If you're in Petone and after a great oriental style dinner, this is the place to go.<br/><br/>Watch out for the fried rice/noodles, as they're very rich and hard to finish 😅

A go to for myself and my partner. Our favourite dishes are the BBQ pork fried rice, which is spiced well and the pork is delish!! The fried rice almost always comes with ONE piece of broccoli which is my only complaint. The GUNG Bao chicken is another one of our favourites. We get it medium and it's perfect hotness. Usually quite busy to dine in, takeaway option is always a go! Definitely recommend!!

This was my go to for take aways and dining in. Dumplings are amazing and the staff are very friendly. Can't say that any of the dishes have been less than perfect!

Brilliant night. Great efficient staff. Amazing food. Authentic experience. Don't be put off from reviews from snobs many years ago!! Give this place a go!!! We had an excellent experience

Where Lemon Chicken doesn’t taste of lemon and Orange Beef doesn’t taste of orange. I am Chinese. I am familiar with the different schools of cuisine. The schools are heavily influenced by the produce and culture of the vast regions across China. For example, northern China has lots of cows and goats, hence those meats dominate the local cuisine. Southern China is abundant in seafood supplies, therefore you have famous dishes like braised abalone and shark fin soup.  The climate also plays a significant role in seasoning.  Due to the severe winters in northern China, food tend to be very salty and heavily seasoned.  For the temperate southern provinces, dishes are often sweet and salty. As for the famous SzeChuan dishes where vast amount of chilli and mouth numbing Chinese black pepper corns are used, the weather is hot and very humid due to the surrounding mountains. Many local people believe that the spiciness drives out the ‘heatiness’ and humidity within our bodies in such a climate. Out of the eight main schools of Chinese cuisine, westerners tend to be most familiar with the hot and spicy SzeChuan cuisine and the sweet and sour GuangDong food, which are where most of the dishes at Mr Ji’s are originated from.

This place serves amazing Chinese food! Coming in on a weekend, it was packed and bustling.<br/><br/>We ordered the orange beef, Mr Ji's special hot pot, cumin lamb, and combination fried rice. The fried rice was distinctively average and I would not recommend this dish. However the orange beef, was fantastic. It was sweet, tangy and flavoursome. The hot pot was spicy and a little too oily for my liking but the beef in it was scrumptious.<br/><br/>Cumin lamb was fantastic as well, crunchy and full of that savoury lamb taste--our group all really enjoyed this dish.<br/><br/>Although the dishes were fantastic, we were disappointed at the portion size of the dishes. We felt that the prices were a bit hefty for the amount of food we had.<br/><br/>Showstopper: Orange beef and cumin lamb.<br/><br/>Overall Grade: B+, would have been higher if the portion sizes are adjusted.

This is one of those small ethnic restaurants with an unassuming street frontage, packed with diners and serving brilliantly authentic food. The sort of place that crops up rarely, one you think you should keep to yourself, but of course that's impossible. "Mexican Specialties" in auckland is, for me, another good example. <br/><br/>We went last night, post movie. <br/><br/>Ordering a Tsingtao beer to help navigate the menu, we shared the braised Aubergine and the shredded pork in pancakes, with rice. <br/><br/>The Aubergine was stunning. I couldn't get over the depth of flavour in the sauce, and every mouthful, again and again, had me thinking "god that's gorgeous". I've had braised aubergine at many Chinese restaurants but this was special. <br/><br/>The pork was lovely with the contrasting textures of the paper thin pancakes, tiny slivers of fried potato, lettuce and the pork being a predictable winner. <br/><br/>My only gripe was the beer - and that has nothing to do with Mr Ji. When Tsingtao was privatised in the early 90's the recipe changed from a traditional German Pilsner with (I swear) wonderful lychee aromas to something that is today boring and bland. <br/><br/>That was 25 years ago and, of course, most will have little memory of the Tsingtao beer of the 80's - but I promise, just like Mr Ji's today, it was truly special.

I always order take out from this outlet as my go-to for my Mee Goreng fix. I also like to order their Orange Beef! Have eaten in with friends and enjoyed dumplings, prawn toast and again MEE GORENG!!! <br/><br/>Great wee take away place :)

The young people running the floor were beyond friendly and very helpful, a concept I don't see very often in restaurants like this. Well, in Sydney anyway.

Another Saturday lunch time haunt for our little family. We have been coming to Mr Ji's for a good few years now, mainly at lunch time but there has been the odd evening meal too. At all times we have found the food excellent and with lovely big portions,Our lunch time order is usually some pan-fried dumplings, spring onion bread (kind of like roti), for me- shredded pork with garlic sauce , Kung Pao chicken for Mr and either noodles or satay chicken for Miss. We also have the tea.The portions at lunch time are huge and easily enough to be a meal. They always have a good serving of veg with them and it is different veg for different dishes. We have always had good service and have never had to wait too long for food.

HiI tried their Tofu dish and Vegetable dish. The vegetable was very nice and I would give it a 4.5.However, the Tofu dish was frankly disgusting.  I opened the take-away box and it was FULL of oil. I had to use a strainer to get the oil out. Even after straining the Tofu was the consistency of caramel pudding.  The photo is AFTER straining . While I recommend the vegetables. I cant give more than a rating of 0 for the Tofu as my partner and I simply cant eat it.

Came here on a busy Saturday night with a group of 5.  Ordered four dishes and were in general happy with them.  However it took about 50 mins to arrive.  The Sichuan spicy beef was ok (not that special), but the cumin lamb was excellent and so was the shredded pork with garlic sauce and the long beans with minced pork.  Will come back again to try other dishes.  One more downside would be the rice, it costed $5 for a medium bowl and between the five of us we had to order 2 bowls to feel satisfied. $10 for rice is a bit too much i reckon.

Walked into Mr  Ji's on a busy Monday but was able to get a nice table ready for two. Busy atmosphere, staff smiley and pleasant. Each of the dishes  we had exceeded our expectations both in taste and quantity/quality of food. Great service. $97 was definitely worth it for what we ordered, including two glasses of wine. Definitely going back.

love this place, food is soooo good and really well priced, basic dining room but kinda adds to it's charm and staff aren't great apart from 1 woman who has always been there but doesn't matter it's not fine dining and isn't trying to be, food speaks for itself. Will always return as long as the chef is there.

i love ji's meal so much. lovely peking duck, orange beef, cumin lamb, the best kongbao chicken in wellington. yes, i love spicy foods. and ji's meal size is big. nice place. good job.

One and a Half star.<br/><br/>Got a couple of dishes and to be honest Ji's kitchen, I did expect better. The beef dish was way too small. Is beef getting pricey these days or something?!!!! I would recommend this dish all over town if I knew that there was decent value to this. But there is not... I am not happy with the "meal" tonight. I have recently been served meals at other <br/>Chinese Restaurants in this general area and they were almost 4 times as big - not a stretch.<br/><br/>Mr Ji's Kitchen - make your serving sizes bigger!!! Please.. No complaints with the actual food aside from the lack of amount.

Went tonight for takeaway meals. Combo fried rice, Orange beef.<br/>Lack of taste. Also there was not much food for the prices. Most places you go to charge less and FILL the takeaway pots, But not at Ji's Kitchen. The Orange beef pot was less then half full but cost me $15.90! Not happy.<br/>We bought the 2 dishes for 2 people and we are both still hungry, any other place we would have leftovers. :(<br/>We won't be going back again.<br/>PS: this was not the first time.

We live local and have dined at and had takeaways often. Food is exceptionally tasty and service is consistently good, highly recommend.<br/><br/>Would have given 5 stars but this stupid system requires me to make up words to justify it. I have said enough!! May be I'll be allowed 5 stars now.

A real treasure. Superb food with service to match from knowledgeable staff.<br/>Authentic dishes. Wellingtons best Chinese and really could compete with the top restaurants anywhere. Limited seating makes one hesitate to review as a find like this needs to be kept secret<br/>Do try , you will return

This is the best Chinese food I have eaten in Wellington, it may be small but the food is fantastic the dishes are different from other Chinese places. The steamed dumplings are great.<br/>Very authentic, will eat here again and again.<br/>Thanks very much for A GREAT MEAL

Went to Mr Ji's for our Christmas do - the food was fantastic. The place was very busy but service was still good. The food just kept on coming and was excellent. We had jellyfish, the Peking Duck, sweet and sour fish (the fish tasted nice and fresh), spicy beef, and spicy king prawns with mince. I'd recommend this place highly.

Mr. Ji's Kitchen is probably the best authentic Chinese restaurant in Wellington and its surrounding suburbs. <br/><br/>I say this without hesitation as I've pretty much been to all of them in search of good Chinese food. <br/><br/>You see all of these 5 star reviews, and they're pretty spot on for a few dishes made famous by a local restaurant reviewer, but there are some other gems here that I think the Kiwi audience should consider.<br/><br/>The braised eggplant - Yu xiang qie zi (literally translated to "fish fragrant eggplant" even though there's not one ounce of fish or seafood in it, it's just a name) is fantastic with a bowl of steamed rice. Saucy, savoury, intensely soul-satisfying.<br/><br/>Cumin lamb - very traditionally crafted with lots of spicy, numbing effects and, of course, cumin. There's also a lamb dish with spring onions that takes me back to my childhood of good Chinese food from the North.<br/><br/>Stir-fried potato strips - Yes, stir-fried potatoes! Very tasty and totally different from the usual chips and mash and baked versions from the West. Coincidentally, the Chinese name for potato is "tu dou" which literally translates to "ground bean." Cute name, don't you think?<br/><br/>Get a side of greens, a soup and maybe a dandan or noodle dish and you're set for a Chinese-feast extravaganza. <br/><br/>Note: They serve Malaysian-style food here (probably to appease the uninformed masses), but if you order it, you will be missing out on some of the best Chinese food in town. For the love of god, go somewhere else for your curries and mee goreng. If you order that stuff here, you're likely to be disappointed and other diners will look at you and laugh.

We love Mr Ji's! Good prices, authentic food, and lots of choice. Recommend getting lots of smaller dishes. And BYO too.<br/>It brings back good memories of being in Asia. My only criticism would be that it gets very LOUD and you must book! This place gets full very quickly.
Pro.N
Portion size is fairly big. The shredded pork is seriously good and I’d recommend it to everyone, the orange beef was fantastic, oh.. yes, the d/fried crab dumpling and steamed dumpling was great. Overall a really good &amp; well priced dining experience.

We made a booking here after my partner read David Burtons review. Food did not disappoint. The orange beef, pork with pancack was amazing. Food portions were generous and prices were good. about $18 each. cool... Will definitely be coming back again.

After reading a recent review in The Dominion which gave this little restaurant glowing praise, we tried it last night but were very disappointed. Our satay chicken entree (normally such a safe bet) was like leather, the second entree was spoilt by a heavy and greasy batter. We tried the Mr Ji's hotpot but it was tasteless and the only dish we enjoyed was chillie pork. Sorry, won't go back, yet another Jackson Street dud restaurant to avoid.
Cam
This place has the best pork buns in town and very cost effective. Good work.
