Staying in Petone for 2 nights and took a walk down Jackson Street. Wow !! Every cuisine you can imagine. We decided on Vietnamese and were not disappointed. Absolutely delicious, if you have never had Vietnamese cuisine before, this is a MUST. Thank you so much ! We had the prawn rice paper rolls with satay sauce, dumplings, Chicken Salad and mine was the spring roll and pork salad with vermicelli. Lord have mercy !!!

Wow! Large bowls of delicious noodles and grilled pork (bun cha hanoi), good value for money! The service was also quick and polite although they were busy.

Fresh ingredients, good portion size and great food. I really like their prawn noodle soup. Almost always go there whenever I'm in Petone.

Great service, lovely meals, literally can’t fault it. Hubby got the pad Thai and I got the chicken curry with rice - delicious and generous portion sizes. Very glad we came here ☺️ was even quite busy even on a Sunday night!

We order regularly from Vietnamese Cafe and EVERY time it’s fresh, tasers and just DELICIOUS! Pretty much a staple now ! The beef salad - outstanding. Summer Rolls - beautiful. Chicken skewers and dumplings - yum!

We drifted in for a late lunch. The kai was delicious, we had a Vietnamese Style Lamb Shank dish, and can totally recommend. The Vietnamese Mixed meat noodle soup was also delicious. Great starters and sides. The restaurant was busy, but everyone was eating, so service was flowing and quick. Our meal was 2 huge meals, 4 sides and cost only $47.00. We did not need dinner, and took a 'doggie container home! Totally recommend the kai!!

Wow! First time I've been here and the food, service, price and atmosphere is awesome. Fast friendly service with a great variety of choices. We ordered the Vietnamese fish cakes (only available on Fri, Sat and Sun) squid and springrolls for entree and the food came out fast, hot and with a smile. He ordered the pork on rice with egg (he's a first timer) and i went with the lamb shank curry with coconut rice and we both had roti. The food was cooked with love, best roti that was fresh and the portions were just right. Thank you to the staff and compliments to the chefs for putting heart n soul into the food. It is also family friendly and you can BYO wine as they do not sell alcohol which is fine by me.

Difficult to get a banh xeo let alone a decent one in Wellington. The best one I have found outside of Saigon. Thanks

Great staff, quick service and big portions. I had the stir fried prawn dish with vegetables and rice. Generously large prawns and flavourful dish.

Had a nice beef salad and satay, very tasty and fresh.

I've been here multiple times over 2 years, their food is always great quality. I'd recommend the beef pho. The price range is fine and so is the wait time .

We ordered the spring rolls & chicken noodles with vegies. It was delicious! Short wait time & friendly staff. We'll definitely be going back

awesome place to find a bowl of noodles or a really good squid salad (our favourite things from here).  The staff are super friendly and food is fresh and tasty - it is a vegan's dream menu

Vietnamese Restaurant and Cafe has been located on a busy Petone corner for a few years now. The menu has grown and matured, featuring affordable Vietnamese-style food that many regular customers return to. Last weekend, we ordered spring rolls with sweet chilli sauce (average) to start. For the main course, the combination fried rice was plentiful but nothing special. They make great pho and I'd highly recommend the chicken pho with side salad (assorted shredded vegetables on a tiny plate, served with a lemon wedge). The rare beef pho was also good with plenty of spring onions and seasonal herbs for flavouring. The service is good; efficient and friendly, even on busy nights. The restaurant is full of hard surfaces which makes it incredibly loud once things starts to get busy, so I'd recommend avoiding peak times unless you're happy to shout in conversation.

I always love it here! My favourite veitnamese food that affordable! Jeremy and I are big eatters so it is so hard to choose something here to eat. We always want what we had the last time and more! But we got the summer rolls, chicken salad and roti to start off with. So good! Small salad is a great 'new' addition to the menu. We devoured it in seconds. For main we@ got ginger chicken and the beef satay. My favourite was the beef satay because it has lots of flavour. The ginger chicken was still great! Staff were great too. Only thing lacking was music, there was no music. Even just on a little bit. It felt a little awkward in the. Other than that loved everything!

Got pork summer rolls and well done beef noodle pho/soup..<br/><br/>The summer rolls were yum and fresh tasting but the peanut sauce it came with was watery and bland.<br/><br/>The soup had ok flavour and came with enough salads of lettuce, mint, coriander, beansprouts, cut red chillies and a wedge of lemon which I liked. However it had too much noodles and not enough broth :(<br/><br/>

Worst dining experience of my life!!!!!  Ordered chicken fried rice and chicken noodle soup. The soup was awful and when I said we both were unable to eat it the crazy guy started eating it to show us it was alright, dropping noodles from his mouth back into the bowl ......  and then expected me to pay for it. Lets just say it went from bad to worse from there.<br/><br/>I will never go back there and recommend others to avoid this place like the plague. Just plain BONKERS
Kevin
Friendly service, reasonably priced and delicious. Try the noodle salad with grilled chicken or the special Vietnamese friend rice accompanied with drip drip coffee. The owner is very friendly.

Absolutely love the salads, pho and vermicelli dishes! Have eaten in once and love that it is BYO but often get takeaways and they are always delish and super quick! NOMMMMMMM

Pretty decent flavours and portion sizes with solid staff. Always get the bun cha, which although misses the mark slightly in terms of authenticity is still tasty. Good lunch prices too!

This is a very decent dine in place which is very busy on weekends . I went their for an early dinner on a Saturday evening and ordered a bowl of soupy noodles which was lip smacking with some good chicken broth and nice and well cooked noodles which came along with a salad . It was some bomb in the mouth and the quantity was enough for two people . I also ordered prawn noodles which was also worth my penny . Satisfied with the friendly and quick service . Will definitely go there on craving for some South East Asian food .

My dinner was the Hue soup with noodle.  It came out highly anticipated because the soup's smell was to die for.  This was expected. After all, the Hue's broth is one of the most impressionable & exciting to the taste buds out of other Viet's soup. It's supposed to leave that strong, pungent & sweet undertoned taste on the first try (recall French onion soup for comparison)Alas, it was a bit of a let-down. The broth was light, translucent and that translates to its being mediocre. Lacking in punch and real original flavour. Perhaps i was expecting too much of the original taste which might be hard to come by. To each their own, my opinion on one dish does not reflect the chef's true skill. It was still delectable. <br/>Deco is colorful & vibrant. Not quite there yet but points to the owner for trying. <br/>Service was friendly with a smile so that's definitely a plus. <br/>Will come back for more

Great little unassuming restaurant.  Good food and reasonably priced.  Staff are efficient and helpful.  Great that it is open for lunch on a Saturday when many Malaysian/Thai restaurants in the area are closed.

It isn't the best Vietnames in town, but it is pleasant enough. Very nice people running it, and the food is OK. No alcohol, so BYO only.<br/><br/>Last night we had:<br/><br/>Summer rolls - thinly cased vegetables served with a peanutty (very mildly peanutty) sauce. OK<br/><br/>Grilled Mussels with a sweet sour dipping sauce. Excellent, huge, tender mussels tasting of the sea. Would have again.<br/><br/>Beef Salad: Dense, very good. We had a medium and I found I needed chilli to add. Pleasant.<br/><br/>Roti with peanut sauce. Lovely flaky bread - this was good.<br/><br/>Overall - an OK Vietnamese restaurant for days when bored with K Sing over the road.

I love coming here .Very friendy staff, awesome food and priced well. Every time we come the owner always welcomes us like long lost friends .Nothing is a problem for her. Had a great meal every time we come here. Love the summer spring rolls. Would not want to go any where , but here.

We have now dined here probably about 12 times over the last couple of years. The food and service are excellent and it's the real McCoy, cooked and prepared in a Vietnamese style. The restaurant is busy most nights of the week which is a real testament to the food and service you get from here. We will be back again soon.
Hilary Neighbours
Had another great meal here tonight & having eaten here before I always find the  food, service & atmosphere excellent. There is a good range of dishes on the menu all with fresh & healthy ingredients. Having visited Vietnam in the past the cuisine is very authentic and with very reasonable prices & friendly staff this is definitely my favourite place to dine in Petone.

Went here because my normal choice was fully booked. Can't say I would go back. The restaurant was cold and it wasn't a comfortable place to sit in.<br/>The food was OK, I would liken it to food court food as opposed to restaurant quality. It was rather bland and lacking in spice or fresh herb tastes. This place would come bottom of my pecking order to eat at in Petone.
Rory Sheehan
Pretty damn average. Turned up to find a stupidly noisy table of about 10 chinese/vietnamese people who were so loud that no one else in the restaurant could hear themselves speak. Ordered the summer rolls and got told they had run out. Spring rolls as replacement were dry, tasteless and probably from the supermarket freezer. Prawn curry main was ok but again lacked any real flavour or bite and was very small. Its saving grace was that there was a good amount of prawns in it. The rice was undercooked and not fluffy or moist. The place is not expensive but i guess you get what you pay for. Very dissapointing really. Would not return.
Sam
The food looked and smelled delicious but the texture of the meal left an unpleasant after taste to the mains. Service was speedy and polite which helped the overall feel to the restaurant.

How anyone can give this place anything less than a five-star rating is beyond belief. The food is excellent and the owners and staff are all very warm and friendly. My wife and I eat here at least every other week and I often meet friends here for dinner as well. You simply will not find better value for money in Petone!

We went for dinner tonight and were very disappointed. All four of us found the food had little taste and was rather boring in its content. We also felt it was over priced for the size servings we received. We would have liked the food to be more authentic with the spices and flavour we would expect for a <br/>Vietnamese meal. We would probably not go back. We did find the service good but unfortunately this did not compensate for the meal.
Brenda Shearer
Excellent fast and friendly service. The food was delicious and very authentic. I've lived in Vietnam and can vouch for the food being just as good as it was in Ho Chi Minh City.<br/>The restaurant was full the night we were there but it didn't feel crowded. Everyone was having a great time. I'll be recommending this restaurant for sure.
Anne Shanks
Very disappointing meal. Peanut sauce bland. Are those shrimp out of a can?? Ordered seafood noodle dish, lacked flavour, in fact didn't eat it after tasting it,. Complained to staff told it was fine, they liked it. Wont be back. Staff didn't try to rectify.
Mike Barton
Well now.... we have just tried the summer rolls followed by the Stir-fried prawns with tamarind and the Beef Satay. Really very good. This was our first vist and the collective feeling is that we will be going again.

I have a Vietnamese wife and have been all over Vietnam many times over and this little patch of Vietnam is one of the nicest spots we have found.<br/>Despite comments from others, the food is on the whole very authentic, although the level of spice has in some cases been dialed back for the local populous.<br/>However, just as in Vietnam, the restaurant has fresh and dried chillies available to suit your individual taste.<br/><br/>The prices are VERY reasonable and the food is both more authentic and tastier than the other Vietnamese restaurants in town, including the rather expensive Restaurant 88.
Katrina White
A very disappointing meal. The food is not authentic at all. The rare beef noodle soup base had no flavour, the beef was not rare and was very tough. The satay chicken and beef were both overcooked and therefore too dry. There was not enough lemongrass in the marinade. The spring rolls were not freshly made so the skin was tough and bordering chewy. I say it again, a very disappointing meal.
Sarah P
A very disappointing meal. Although the service was very good, the food was a let down. Not spicy at all even though both meals were requested as medium, I wouldn't even call the spice level mild, and stringy pieces of lemongrass were right through the meal, which were not very nice to chew... When we eat out, we expect the food to taste better than food we cook at home and if we had prepared food like this we would have been disappointed.

Have just started working in Petone. My first visit here was a couple of weeks ago, I had the beef salad extra spicy, the other 2 had Tom Yum soup and Pad Thai, OMG delicious.<br/>Second trip back yesterday, 4 of us this time, and it was pleasing to know that the ones that didn't come the first discovered this place a week ago as well.<br/>Great Service, Great food, and the prices are pretty good as well, value for money I think.<br/>Be careful Medium is quite hot but not OTT hot, and the HOT is very very very HOT - Enjoy
Nat
We have dined here as a larger group and as a small family. Both times we have been impressed with the friendly staff whilst being attentive are not overly effusive.<br/>The food was fresh, delicious and staff were happy to increase the portion sizes for us so everyone could have a starter.<br/>We enjoyed chicken curry, roti and an amazing noodle salad.<br/>BYO which is a bonus and the prices are really reasonable.<br/>We will be back

Love this place. Super friendly staff who are always keen to help and are as attentive as you want them to be without interrupting your dinner.<br/><br/>Great food for very reasonable prices. Loads of flavour and fairly large portions which is great for sharing. BYO as well!
Mark Brewer
Great food and a friendly buzzy atmosphere. The service was excellent. Very good value. <br/><br/>Booked again for 4. This would be our third visit. Unfortunately 2 had to pull out so my wife and I decided to go anyway and we rebooked for 4 the next night. 2 nights in a row could be too much we thought but no. we worked the menu and loved it both nights. Very reasonable and busy friendly atmosphere.<br/>

We came here never having been here before, we started with summer rolls, fresh and tasty especially with the sauce! Next we shared grilled mussels, perfectly cooked and presented, a delight to eat! <br/>We shared the lamb curry, with rice and roti, delicious!! Lovely hot crispy roti, and very tasty curry! <br/>We will definitely be back to try other dishes!

You don't seem to be able to leave a second review, only update your first one. <br/><br/>Thanks again Sandy for an excellent meal; great food, great atmosphere, and fantastic service. <br/><br/>This is now our default place to come for a quick affordable family meal. <br/><br/>*************************************<br/><br/>We had dinner here last night, our second time here. Only a week after our first. <br/><br/>We had to come back as it's such a great little restaurant to have a quick authentic and affordable family meal. <br/><br/>It's not just the quality of the food and the excellent prices that made us go back. The staff are friendly and helpful and the owner takes the time to say hello and check that you're all happy. Just a great atmosphere.<br/><br/>We see this will be a regular outing for us in the future.

Food was really awesome, we enjoyed it and will go back again.<br/> Staff was very friendly and professional too.<br/>Keep up the good work guys.<br/>Thanks<br/>Kv

This is a fabulous little restaurant with excellent service. The staff are delightful and very helpful. We love the summer rolls and the special curries are delicious. Excellent service and food. Will most certainly be back.

This is a bustling little restaurant with exceptional friendly obliging service. Meals are generously sized and very reasonably priced - couple with BYO it makes it a cheap dinner out. We. Had summer rolls and satay sticks for entree which were lovely and they added an extra roll on the plate so we could all have one each. Noodle and rice dishes were tasty with authentic mix of herbs and balanced flavours. Stir fried chicken with ginger had plants of ginger. We will definitely go back - I recommend you book a table before as this appears to be a very popular restaurant.
Mike Hughes
Our party of five people all had a thoroughly enjoyable evening at the Vietnamese Restaurant and Cafe. The food was excellent and the service was friendly and attentive. Very good value for money. We will certainly be back.
Russell Malanchak
Food was excellent and service was really good too. Nice atmosphere.

Another great Petone restaurant<br/>Great service and friendly staff with a pleasant atmosphere<br/><br/>Chicken curry &amp; chicken satay were both good<br/><br/>Well priced and we will be returning

We ate here a couple of days ago and it was DELICIOUS! The staff were friendly and accommodating to our dietary needs. They made suggestions that thought would suit us. The Vietnamese shrimp salad was amazing as was the chicken stirfry noodle dish that I ordered. Would most definately go back for another visit.
Hilary Bevin
We thought it would be nice to try the new Vietnamese place. We did get takeaway and have to say it was pretty poor. The food was tasteless apart from the overwhelming coriander. We could have done better ourselves with the old supermarket shop. Definitely would not get food from this restaurant again..looking at previous reviews maybe the takeaway is worse than the dine in?
Frances Reid
Fantastic delicious Vietnamese food, service was helpful and the prices were great. Don't know what restaurant Duminda was at but it wasn't the same one as mine.
Roseanne
We thought the entrees and their sauces were exquisite, the main courses ample, the service attentive and cheerful, and the bathroom almost luxurious. As to the cost - anyone can afford to dine here. The BYO very handy.<br/>All in all a really nice experience.
Duminda Samarakoon
I had the chicken curry and honestly I could have done much better myself by throwing in some veges, chopped chicken and a curry mix from pack n save! They asked whether I would like it spicy and I said 'yes' but found it slightly spicier than a mild butter chicken curry.
Irene Woodhouse
Authentic delicious vietnamese food.<br/>Smiling attentive staff<br/>Will return
