Review Origin - Petone

We stoped in for coffee and a sweet treat in Petone following lunch in The Esplanade and we ended up at Origin, which appeared to be a vegan friendly cafe. The interior of the cafe was funky and new age seeming and the cabinet sweets looked enticing. I tried a lemon slice with a coconut latte and the espresso was amazing and the slice very tasty. I’d love to visit again and order off their menu because the meals on neighboring tables were super impressive. This was a very chilled and relaxed cafe with a calming catch up vibe. Highly recommended!

The highlight was definitely the cashier/waiter. A great character and friendly manner. Great selection of coffee, and I was very satisfied with my latte. I had the bean burrito as well that tasted lovely. Amazing decor, with murals done by Greta Menzies, a notable Wellington artist. Also a fan of the music, I caught some Beatles, Cream, and Lou Reed just to give a picture. Edit: just after I posted it the waiter I referred to gave me and my girlfriend a sample of the filter: very good.

As I entered i wasn't sure what to think, the environment had a distinct 70s vibe to it, the service staff seemed relaxed and genuinely happy. Coming from the busier side of town I wasn't used to the peaceful and quiet feeling of this location. Origin has a lot of vegan meals on offer, I chose the vegan hash and my friend had the vegan tacos which was a special. The meal it self came out in a black bowl, it looked quite small for the $18 I paid for it, I wasn't impressed at first. Then I bit into the facon strip and my God.... I was in heaven. I just had vegan crackling and it was great, the mushroom was so soft and flavourful I could enjoy the aftertaste for some time. The hash was big and was crunchy outside and soft inside, there wasn't too much spinach and overall I was very satisfied with the meal, it was topped off with vegan hollandaise sauce and a garnish of pesto on the side, one of the best vegan hashes I have ever had! Do I recommend this place? Damn right I do!

We had a lovely brunch at Origin this weekend. The coffee and food is excellent with an extensive plant-based menu available and substantial counter food. This is the Big Bang, paying homage to Origin’s former life as Go-Bang Espresso. Friendly staff and great service.

The food was great. There a variety of options other then regular breakfast at cafes. We ordered some creamy mushrooms with sourdough toast, halloumi pesto bagel and coffees. I particularly liked the food more than the coffee. Would definitely recommend a visit for the food again.

Very good, well prepared coffee. Good variety of menu options and plenty of choice if vegan or vegetarian is your thing. Well cooked poached eggs but the toast currently served is a little tougher than I like. Great staff and service.

Really impressed with food, atmosphere and the excellent customer service here. Loads of vegan, DF and GF options at the counter and on the menu, including a good selection of dairy free milkshakes which is SO awesome. Portion sizes decent all round, food is usual café prices/good value. Friendly, quick thinking waitress proactively offered us a small bowl, napkin and cake fork for our toddler so she could share from our plates (we usually have to ask so this was so thoughtful!) There’s also a basket of toys and table with chairs for little ones to play. We’ll definitely be back!

Love this place! We trvalling from Sydney the best for breakfast! Got stuck during the pandemic 2 months so between you guys and the Sweet Vanilla Kitchen in Lower Hutt, couldn't decide both amazing dishes, hope to visit again soon :)

So many delicious vegan options! I had a taco with perfectly crispy tofu. Coffee was excellent (and ethically sourced). Kids menu had mostly vegetarian but not vegan, but "build a breakfast" sorted that. According to the other child, "the halloumi was perfectly cooked and delicious, and the dairyfree mango milkshake was so creamy it seemed like dairy."

A great cafe that has been in Petone for many years! An institution of sorts, the coffee, food and service are great. Origin are always re-inventing and have a great menu. I had a clumsy moment while dinning there and the staff were extremely humble and so quick to help and sort out my mess. I can't say I have ever experience this kind of service before, it was over and above. Well done team and can't wait to visit soon. A must try!!

Great service here, excellent coffee. Good selection of food, I had sausage roll, it was delicious. The young man serving me when he delivered the food asked me if I wanted salsa. The salsa was gorgeous.

Deliciously fresh coffee, beautifully made. Lots of delicious food to choose from, catering to all your veggie, vegan and gluten free needs. Nice space to sit inside good seating outside.

The best coffee in Petone hands down. The staff are friendly as and the food is always amazing. There are options to suit everyone on the menu from kids to gluten free. It’s our go to option in Petone and it’s hard not to stop and grab a coffee if we are just driving past
