Review Tulsi Petone - Petone

Pippy B
You must try here, the food was delicious with a very generous portions. I loved that there was goat on the menu, but lots of vegan and vegetarian options as well. The momos are a must try. There were also many gluten-free options. You order your food on a tablet that the service staff gave you, this won’t be for everyone, but I adored it, I love winter is used and the right way.

Have been to this place twice- one on their opening day and other time was a couple of weeks ago! The commendable part was that irrespective of being a busy night on their opening night, they made sure that the quality and taste of food was not compromised! That got me to be here for the second time 😌 This place has a variety of food ranging from Nepalese, Indian and Indo-Chinese.. We tried the Chicken Lollypops,Chicken Steamed Momos😍(Have more 4 varieties including fried, tandoori, jhol and chilli), American Chopsuey, Chicken Noodles, Chilli Chicken and Chicken Fried rice..Must say, I’ve loved the food here and also the vibe! This is a nice family restaurant with an friendly staff! It also does a BYO- wine only🍷 so you can enjoy the meals with a glass of wine, or two!😉😍

Have been to Everest Chullo in town a couple of times and being a Doonite the first thing to order is always momos. I instantly fell in love with the yellow sauce and wished that they would open a restaurant in Hutt. Ordered 🥟🥟 from Petone, Everest Chullo. You are doing great. Keep up the quality guys. Highly recommended.

Me and my hubby ordered chicken Momo, Chicken chowmien and chicken lollipops. Oh my goodness all of them were so delicious! Especially chowmien is a must-have. We’ve tried chowmien in Sydney as well but this was way better than Sydney’s. My hubby is Indian and he knows what the taste should be, and he freakin loved them. So confidently certified! We will come back again for sure.

An authentic Nepalese food not to be missed if you are in Wellington. Decent portions, amazing flavours makes your experience a 10/10. We will be back:)

Great place to try authentic Nepalese dishes. I would highly recommended the Chowmein, Tandoori Momos and the Thali meals.

I initially tried a few indian restaurants and I thought nothing tastes nearly as good as in India. But after going to a few more restaurants like Tulsi and Chilli Spice it turned around. Its just that you have to try and see a few dishes before thinking bad. The grill meat platter I tried here was awesome.

Finally a well deserved Nepali Authentic Resturant in Wellington Got CHICKEN MO:MO (Dumpling) feels like taste from home (Nepal) Well done team and best of luck❤️❤️

So delicious! Nepal has flavours all its own yet reminiscent of India, Tibet and China. Need to go back to try more dishes! Highly recommended

I had a great experience organizing the first birthday party for my daughter. The food was excellent, and all of my guests (around 80-90) were very happy with the food and service they received from the staff of Tulsi restaurant Petone. Highly recommend the restaurant.

Wow, just wow. Had an amazing experience here momos are a must I'm a big fan of dumplings and these did not disappoint. There was two of us and we grabbed the momos and feast dish with a bit of everything it was very tasty and filling there wasn't one thing I didn't like right down to the pickled radish. Service was also excellent, kind and friendly staff. It's also byo wine lol

Loved the food here! We had the fried lamb momo and butter paneer. The momo dumplings were delicious and the butter paneer was the best we’d had in a long time! The staff were fantastic; friendly and attentive. We will be back!

Went to Everest Chullo in Petone and decided to have an 'entree feast' - instead of ordering mains we shared 4 different entrees including their Momo dumplings (we got the tandoori style) Wow! Everything was delicious! Beautifully presented and just perfect. I wish I took a picture but we dug in too quickly haha. I will be recommending this restaurant to friends and family for sure.

On our second night in Wellington, as it was after 8:30, we ventured into Petone to find a restaurant for dinner. Fortunately at it was late, we were warmly greeted by Tulsi, seated and promptly served. We ordered several sharing dishes including Chicken Biriyani, Coconut Prawn Curry, Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka, Tandoori Chicken, Paneer with garlic and butter chicken naan served with mango lassis. Our dinner was extraordinary, with my highlight being the coconut prawn curry and biriyani and the lassi is one of the best I’ve had at a restaurant. Service was lovely and for dinner for 5, it was value for money. This definitely was a memorable Indian dining experience. Highly recommended!

Beautiful experience, had nostalgia when had momos there, serviced by Keshab great service very polite, amazing atmosphere and great food. Highly recommend. ❤️

Wonderful service, food was delicious. Shared thr pakora paneer, the spicy momos, and the lamb hariyoporiyo - everything was cooked to perfection!
Amanda
Used to be great and we ordered regularly - but nothing has been good since the menu changed approx one year ago. The curries don't taste the same at all and the chicken tikka is now sub-par (used to be excellent.) What a pity.

Won’t be back, absolutely horrible!! The staff are rude asf and for a place claiming to have amazing butter chicken it couldn’t be further from the truth!
Jasmine Clark
The other staff were attentive and pleasant to talk to where as I believe the duty manager on shift had extremely poor customer service skills, he was unpleasant, rude and rushed us. He didn’t provide any helpful feedback when I asked about dietary requirements as they had two stickers on their front window saying they catered to dairy free and vegan options which I was very pleased to see! But all I got was one meal blurted out at me in a very impatient and rude manner and responded rather angrily when I tried to get any more information on what I could eat. They also charged us for rice when it claims to be free in the lunch specials wouldn’t recommend there is plenty of other lovely Indian restaurants to eat at before this one !

Wish I could give it lower! Worst curry ever. No flavour, no heat, watery chicken, overcooked prawns. Butter chicken is definitely not award winning, you need to change the name. So disappointing will never be ordering again! If you want very watery curry then maybe it is for you.

We went there tonight as a group of 5 people. Walked in at about 7:30pm. 20 min later we still hadn’t seen a waiter or a menu. We proceeded to look up the menu on our phones. After 35min we had to approach a waiter in person to ask for our drinks order to be taken and ordered food at the same time. Another 20min before the drinks arrived and then they didn’t have any apple cider, which 3 people ordered! Over an hour for the food to arrive! Food was tasty enough (therefore a 2 rating and not a 1) but service was shockingly bad!! We didn’t even consider ordering more drinks or dessert because we wanted to get home this century!! Worst service I’ve ever had!

Oh yum!
Tulsi never fails to impress, (maybe I’m easily impressed) but I am a sucker for a good butter chicken and fluffy Naan.
Definitely my pick of a sit down to eat Indian restaurant!
Nature's Kid
Went there for late lunch with one of my buddies . Warm welcome on a cold day, ordered two dishes. Kadai panneer and chicken tikka masala for the lunch combo ,server with naan and rice . The naan pieces were so soft and easily chewable . Panneer dish was just about perfect indian style . And chicken tikka masala was a rich creamy gravy with some good spicy texture. I ordered for indian hot as my taste buds are spice demanding and it was good to the expectation . Very nicely cooked chicken pieces and fresh. The ambience is nice and calm . One thing that was lagging is the rice. It was not strained properly ,i could sense it was moisturey as it shouldn't be if it's a usual basmati rice . Good reception and welcoming by the staff . One of them promised me that they are gonna start adding tawa paratha which I'm looking forward to have. Feel good place.

tulsi is amazing, good food, good atmosphere but one bad experience ruin everything, i went in the restaurant at 9:10 and staff was like restaurant is about to close at 9:30 which is suppose to be close at 10pm according to (google search) I asked the staff again about the timing on google, she said it is by mistake, which is completely inappropriate, just because the restaurant is empty and no customer is there does not mean, restaurant will shut down before time.

I dined in one evening ordering an entree of Tandoori Prawns mild spice which came with a side dish of sour slaw and a sour dressing, and a main of Chicken Korma.
The Tandoori prawns were too hot and the chicken tasted off after my 3rd bite so discontinued my meal.
3hrs later I had got food poisoning for the next 3days.
On a positive note the atmosphere is wonderful there

The staff are a real asset to this place. They make the experience wonderful and you are blown away by the consistency of good food each time you go

short: such a pathetic and unprofessional customer service. Food not even tried.
Long story:
In a busy period 2nd Jan 2017, again 2nd Jan lowerhutt restaurant about 8pm. Im damn hungry. Ordered a small starter and got to know that will be ready in 20 mins. I realised may take longer and went to eat vege about 5mins away from the store. Came back in 35 mins and you know, as expected food is not ready. And then person on the counter confirmed with the chef (biggest late lateef ever) and option given me again is refund, somehow its not going to be ready and they told me they ok to refund otherwise it may take long. I got refund, the only option I have. the real thing is they are closing the resto by the time.
Person on the counter not even apologised and asked me take cash as refund.

Went for lunch here some time ago and just remembered how horrible it was. The staff are so incredibly rude the worst I have experienced. Unfortunately the food mirrors their attitude. The management need to up their game as they have a lot of competition in Petone and Lower Hutt
RickyM
Tulsi has been my go to takeaway in Petone for many years however the food has slowly gone done hill and my last two experiences have been very disappointing. I am glad Taste of Raj has opened as the food their is significantly better!

Went here a couple of days ago and food was superb! I was warmly greeted at the enterance and for $9.90 I bought a naan, rice, and a curry of my choice. I ordered a hot Butter Chicken and it was amazing! All the right flavours and not to sweet. I would recommend others to come here it's definitely a place I am coming back to.
Rosie
Rather disappointed with my visit last week. Maybe it was due to the lack of staff? I could only see 2 staff members, and they weren't the friendliest. Rice was stale/cold - probably left over rice from the previous night. Curry was nice, but only had 3 little chicken pieces in my bowl.

Created this account just to rate my horrible experience.
Ok me and my dad went to tulsi in petone for lunch the meals came to $19. i was thinking a normal meal will never fill me up. Let me get a large. So i ask the server so he changed my price from $9 to $19. The total came around $30. Anyways food comes, there was a bowl of rice around 200 grams, paying 19 bux i would think i would get my own bowl but nope it was shared. Then the most disappointing curry i have ever seen came out. The size of both bowls of curry were the same only i paid double and i would of maybe got an extra piece of beef compared to my dad. honestly it was so disappointing. the bread was 2 half pieces each again so not worth the money. Then to top it off the server was the most arrogant person i have ever been served by, no form of conversation, and came of as like he thought he was better than everyone else.

would i go back definitely not. Do i recommend Tulsi to anyone nope do not go here.
Purnima Sudha
Thanks for providing the awesomest Palak Paneer. I absolutely loved it. The staffs were friendly and the naans were very crisp. You should consider expanding in Auckland. :)

We went there on a weekday to have dinner with friends and family as i have been suggested a lot to try their food. As soon as we stepped in the good service that they offer started as the staff got us seated and had the menus available in a jiffy. We were not familiar with Indian food so we had a lot of questions which the staff was very pleased to answer. And the food that we had was also very nice and tasty. It was some of the best food that i ever had. Butter chicken was tasty as. Well, it is as good as they say. That's why they were busy during the weekdays too. I am surely going back there at least for the service if not the food.
Clive Jones
Now that is what i call good food and great service still maintaining affordable pricing. Loved dining here with my family. We went there this Friday to try their Indian food and Tulsi did not disappoint. The food was lovely and the service was very effective. The staff was friendly and helpful which further increased our dining experience. Definitely worth a go.

The Friday night atmosphere in tulsi felt active and lively as usual and being a regular customer I was greeted nicely by the staff. I ordered an Indian hot chicken tikka masala which I felt would bring a different taste to the mainstream butter chicken and it did. It was served hot as usual and the speed was good for a busy restaurant, I would strongly recommend it. The only recommendation I would have is the music being played, it gets a bit boring and needs to be something more fresh like the food.

I went to this restaurant a couple of days ago with some friends the service was superb. I orderd butter chicken and vegetable Korma The butter chicken was to die for and vegetable Korma was the best I have ever had. Going to this restaurant was a delight from the service to the food I loved it. Would recommend for others

I have tried Tulsi couple of times with Grab one vouchers. The food has absolutely no flavor and they use the same base for most of their curries. I am very surprised how they have managed to survive for so long with sweet curries and bad service. There are so many other alternatives nearby in Petone and Lower Hutt which gives you way better food and good value for your money.
Sheila
I had high expectations for this place but was left very disappointed, bad service terrible and disgusting food and the food presentation was awful. The server didn't even bother coming to check to see how the food was or to take away the plates after we had finished our meals. Very dissatisfied will definitely not go there again EVER!

Went to Tulsi for the first time 2 weeks ago for a business lunch on a Wedseaday. I had heard that the Tulsi in the city was very good and the one in Lower Hutt good...so I had high expectations. Our table of 5 people was one of two there, which made the place feel pretty empty. The young man who welcomed us was very pleasant and attentive without being overbearing. If I was rating this restaurant on serve, I'd give it a 3. However, the food was very disappointing. I don't know how they did it . . . but it lacked flavour. There was NO love in this food. I could have bought better sauces at the store. Indian food is based on spices!!!! They are meant to warm the soul. There was no balance of flavour and heat . . .because it just lacked.....spice. The vindaloo that I had tasted of tomato puree, tomato sauce, and chilli. I couldn't taste, cumin, ginger, paprika, cloves, lemon juice, tamarind. Nothing! It was just boring! I didn't even know if it was vindaloo...shame.

I used to work near Tulsi (Petone) and often had lunch there, because it was really good.

But that was a year or three ago. Tonight though we grabbed some take-away from there because I had fond memories of their Badam Pasanda... BIG MISTAKE!

The warning bells should have gone off when the staff struggled to confirm whether it was a Badam Pasanda or a Korma, but I didn't think much of it until it came to the eating.

Most significantly, we ordered two dishes, one "mild" the other "Indian hot." The problem is that it was hard to tell the difference between the two. Needless to say, both of us were disappointed, me because it wasn't hot enough, and Chrissi because it was too hot.

I also found that the flavours were so much more bland than they used to be -- which may explain why there weren't many people dining in during the pick up.

I will NEVER be going back to this restaurant again (there are far too many better options for Indian in Petone / Maungaraki)!
Siobhan
Very reasonably priced for dinner takeaways: $12 for a curry with rice and naan bread. We both went with butter chicken (1x mild and 1x medium) and everything was delicious!
Danielle
Tulsi is the best place in Wellington to experience a delicious Indian cuisine. We have been customers for over four years and are always very impressed with the staff, good and experience. We are big fans of the butter chicken but other currys are also delicious. Restaurant is always clean and empty dishes are quickly taken back to the kitchen. Highly recommend Tulsi.
Julie Alp
Be prepared to be ripped off- we got takeaways from Petone Tulsi. First the man behind the counter 'accidentally' entered $30 into the eftpos when the cost of my meal was $16.50. Caught this in time and he fixed it. My reward- the extra naan I ordered (and paid for) was left out of our takeaway order. One 'mistake' okay, but two?

And the total ripoff? My friends told me after the two container sizes for takeaways (medium and large) actually contain the same volume. So pay for more but get the same.

The food was actually quite nice but for the sake of one $4.50 naan and some pretty terrible service none of us will be going back.
Lisa Clyde
We use to go to Tulsi Petone all the time and think it was fantastic but the last 3 times we have received takeaways we have been extremely disappointed. The food doesn't taste fresh and all and the chicken has fat all the way through it. I wouldn't go back there again.
Mike Marshall
One of the most authentic tasting Indian restaurants in Hutt City, if not the most. The lamb rogan josh, chicken tikka masala, vindaloos are all superb and the keema naan and chilly chicken naan bread. The wait-staff are charming and are good at service and always comes happily to the table when needed. On occasion our meal has come out too mild and we've asked them to fix it, and they do so with absolutely no fuss. Simply the best restaurant around with excellent interior.
Nicole Edwards
Went there for dinner with another 3 tonight. I'm sorry to say we will not go back any more. The food we ordered taste not really fresh. Also the butter chicken only a little bit chicken in pot. It not worth for money. Other friends were not enjoy the meals as well. Overpriced.
Karen
We went there couple of weeks ago with my friends. The service was terrible. The food wasnt really nice. We order the butter chicken. It wasnt nice. I would say it's under average. We wont be back anymore.

Been to Tulsi in Petone for dinner. Great service from all the staff with smile. Being Indian I like strong flavored curry with nice spicy touch to it. I was very much helped choosing the right curry for my taste as kiwis flavors are different to Indians. It was fabulous, very very tasty and seems like they just made it for me I almost licked my plate. Naan was very good, soft and full of freshness. I got shocked seeing all this poor reviews posted. I would say it was so busy when I went in and 30 mins wait time for made to order food is average time for any busy restaurant (well we are not in McDonald's). I will definitely come back Tulsi, make sure you keep the standards up to the highest. I wanted to give 5 stars but as this is my 1st time at Tulsi Petone I'll test their consistency for 5 star rating. "Good Luck Tulsi Petone"

Agree with the below reviews, good food but bad service (at the front counter), you would think by now they would have resolved this.. Won't be returning in a hurry, was nothing to rave about. Compliments to the chef however :)
Sarah P
Absolutely the WORST indian food we have ever eaten and we are not fussy eaters! Wish I had read the reviews before I wasted my time and money going here. Terrible food and terrible customer service. We asked for both curries to be medium hotness - one was so hot that it was inedible and the other was the correct level of hotness but not very nice. Prawns were chewy and tasted old.
Shazz
I have been here a few times, the food is pretty inconsistent in quality. I have had a couple of really great meals, the others have been a complete let down.

The biggest let down for me was the customer service. The person who greeted us was very short. Didn't smile or show any decent communication. However they waiters were the worst, they were yelling at each other, they were absolutely rude.

I would recommend this if customer service is important to you (like it is too me) I would suggest take-away.
Huia W
Great food, not to long a wait either. But then the waiters decided to have an arguement in their native language over the till. One waiter in particular looked like he was getting quite aggresive (obviously frustrated over something) but still not a great look to the customers and also in front of the children that were dining with their parents.
Erica Tappin
went to tulsi for a late lunch. service was mediocre but mind you it was late in the afternoon and close to their closing time. we had chicken wings. very very tasty although quite small?... would get 2 next time. I had mild chicken Korma which was really really beautiful excellent flavours. Husband had the "Kiwi hot" chicken Madras, and again very very good, nice and hot but not overly so. Another drink would have been nice but alas the staff obviously didn't agree as they didn't offer one? bit of a pick up on a service and some friendlier staff and it would be a really nice place.
Andrew Rodger
Poor service, average food, will never go back there again. waited 45 minutes for Entree while takeaway meals were pouring out of the kitchen and had a higher priority. Will be going back to the restaurant up the road where we have always had great prompt service and food.
Kaitlin Jennings
Very bad service!!!

Went here for lunch, ordered the lunch special, $11.90 butter chicken, naan bread and a drink. After our meal we had to call them over, as they were too busy chatting to each other, I asked to have it take away so he put it in a container for me.

But once we went to go pay for it he charged me a $1.00! for the plastic container, but never told me this when i asked to have it takeaway. He was very rude telling me its too late and didn't apologize for not telling me it would cost extra for a tiny container.

very unsatisfied costumer. wont be going back!!!
KatyG
We eat her fairly regularly, takeaways as well as dining in. Usually the food and service is great, but last time we went for my birthday the service was poor. Hopefully this was an aberration and not a sign of things to come. Will still go again, but the service needs to improve on this visit.

Just got a take out order from Tulsi.

The phone manner of the person taking the order was good, he even helped me with the menu and made suggestions so we could get best value for money.

Got to the restaurant to pick up the order, was met in a friendly and welcoming manner, and the transaction went very smoothly in a timely manner.

After a ten minute drive home, the food was still hot and delicious. Very well done.

We went there on a Saturday night as a special occasion. While the service was adequate, the food was mostly disappointing. We ordered the mixed platter....did the Chef have an accident with the salt? Is Indian food meant to be so salty? The samosas were overcooked, nearly burned. When my main came out (Chicken Biryani (sp)), the plate had not been cleaned, and there was sauce and rice smeared on the outer edge of the bowl. Attention to detail would have helped.

I won't even rate a star in this place. Our anniversary night started fine until we dine in Tulsi Petone tonight 19/04/2011. It started with a very pushy waiter taking an order. Unhelpful, No customer service, whatsoever that it seems like we shouldn't be ordering at all. It was totally shocking! We waited for 30 minutes until the food is served. The food is served in very small amounts and we paid 46.00 dollars for two tiny bowl of curry and one small plate of rice!!! for the two of us. I am not really happy and I promise that I will never come back in this place. This is the worst dinner I had in my life. UNBELIEVABLE.
Martin Pratchett
I would never go back to this place.
Been three times:
* First was terrible. Food average, service shocking, wait for food interminable.
* Second, lunch with father in law, $5 lunch deal. Food ok, service terrible, wait for food not as bad as first time.
* Third time - went along as part of a group when someone else had booked. Food took an incredible length of time to arrive. Was average when it got there. No apologies at any time from staff.

How do these people stay in business?
Rachel
good service and very good food
Lilli
We arranged a work dinner at Tulsi with a group of around 30 people. Our group had to be somewhere else at 8:30pm, so the staff at Tulsi suggested we come in at 5pm and assured me this would be ample time for them to serve us. Prior to the dinner we arranged a group menu with the staff beforehand, so things would run smoothly and they would know what to expect.

Needless to say, this was not the case. After being served one drink we were left to our own devices for 90 mins until our entree platters finally arrived. There were only about 6 other people seated in the restaurant.
Our main platters started arriving around 8:15pm (3 hours later!), by which point we had no time to eat them and had to leave.

I understand that we are a big group, but after the staff assuring me more than once that this would be fine, I was quite annoyed.
As staff offered no explanation even when asked directly, and only came round to serve drinks once, it was absolutely shocking service. Will never go back.

A group of 12 of us went for a ladies lunch on Sunday and I agree with regards to service.. there was only one waiter who was very very helpful & friendly.. the others, when they appeared, and whom seemed more senior to him, were unenthusiastic and didnt seem to want us there!!??!

But overall good food (one of our ladies who had actually previously lived in India for 7yrs did agree) and good atmosphere, comfy seating, easy flat access.

Prices were good especially for the lunch-time combo.
Sophia
I have been there twice and the food is really good but i do agree that service would be a issue.I think they need more staff especially in the evenings as i had to wait for a long time for my meal but the environment is really good.
Anthony
I eat vegetarian food and the food here at Tulsi was good.

However the service was terrible. I ordered raita and pickle, which never arrived. Neither did the roti bread, until I asked for it after the main meal had arrived.

They need a system. The person who took the orders didn't deliver the food. The person who delivered the food kept walking past our table and putting the food on the next table!
Sarah
Have been to tulsi many times, the service has been great and food even better!
Jean
We've dined at Tulsi in Petone many times and have always found the food to be excellent We've never walked in to find no one at the desk.
