Review The Hook - Petone

Kevin Lambert
It was my daughters 23rd birthday dinner. The food was good, not spectacular, but it was slightly above average. We were close to the only ones in there so we made our own atmosphere (around 10 of us) but they had a nice ambient lighting and so was the furniture. The staff were courteous and efficient and although we kept them busy they were nonintrusive. They allowed us a little over time which we were grateful for. I would go there again.

Dined at The Hook last night and had a wonderful evening. We had a large group booking (25 all up), every single person enjoyed their meal, including the kids. On top of the good food is super friendly staff who check in to make sure everything is alright. They managed our large group really well! The steak meals, lamb shank and salmon meals were a hit! Steak was cooked exactly as ordered. Thank you for taking good care of us, we’ve already started talking about returning!

Wow ! Top notch food ! We booked late and were happily accommodated. The crab ravioli was exceptional! Pork three ways, lamb shanks and sirloin all cooked perfectly. Sorry about state of photos but we started eating before we took photos 🤣 the prawn starters were on point, mussels delicious with a hint of spice. Desserts were just as yummy. Brownee, cheese cake and banoffee came in little jars. Well presented, lovely atmosphere. Serving staff were attentive. Would highly recommend this restaurant.

Delicious food. Seafood chowder was yummy. We had pan fry fish, sirloin steak, seafood chowder, nuggets, beef burgers & chips for kids which they really enjoyed. Yogi's survice was great, came a couple of times to check if everything was ok. Overall 10/10

Enjoyable meal just nothing special, wasn't as good as we expected (thanks to the reviews). Seafood chowder was nice, just not thick enough (my sister was going to drink it which would of been embarrassing) . Side of Mashed Potatoes and fries came out before mains (we had asked all sides and extras be bought with Mains) . All in all glad we tried it, but probably won't be back meals were fairly small so not much value for dollar there.

Value for money for A grade steaks on hot rocks. Delicious, generous and exciting to work on.

The service staff were friendly, tidy, and obliging. The chefs produced delicious sauces, and the serving portions were generous. I felt my money well spent. The Tuscan salmon was superb. Crispy skin texture and plenty of sauce to absorb the mashed potato as well

Super fast service and our dishes were very tasty, what more could you ask for? This is a more upscale restaurant imo. Main dishes were in the mid $30NZD range. The pan fried fish was to die for.

This was out first time at 'The Hook' and we had an amazing evening. Mouthwatering food and delicious drinks in more than generous portions combined with great service from the staffs at a relaxed atmosphere did make an overall enjoyable experience. Special thanks to 'Sunny' for the wonderful surprise. We’ll definitely be dining here again. Thanks team!!

Amazing place the food is delicious and the service is wonderful! I got served by a lovely waitress named Bharti and she was truly understanding about my food allergy which is a great first contact and a good indication about the food quality. I passed such a good time, definitely one of my favourite place so far.

One of the best meals we’ve ever had! Delicious pan fried fish and a perfect steak! Yogi helped us with recommendations and he was such a great server/manager/all around busy guy - doing it all with a smile and the best attitude! Do not miss this wonderful restaurant when in Wellington.

We didn’t have a booking, just walked in last night, the food was delicious and I feel reasonable considering top notch seafood. Food came really quickly and taste amazing. Friendly staff and nice atmosphere. We had beef burger and pan fried fish - which also came with a prawn! Very nice

Great food. Great service. Great price. Wish we had started coming here ages ago. Fix menu was the way to go. Just 55 bucks for 3 courses.

We went to dinner on a sunday night it wasn't busy but had a good atmosphere. We ordered the Sesame Beef & Prawn for entree and it was delicious the sauce was so flavoursome and the beef and prawn were tender. I had the pork trio which was yummy!! The pork belly was the highlight the other two porks were good though and everything else on the plate mixed well my partner had the burger and said it was good overall awesome experience 👌
I am a fussy eater so I rang The Hook 5 days before the booking to see if they would let an adult order off the kids menu. On The Hook's website it just says "Kids Menu: Free coke, lemonade or house juice and a kid’s sundae with any kid’s main." The person on the phone said it would be fine if I order off the kid's menu. So I had my order all planned out. Last night was the booking and the menu said "this menu is for kids under 12 years of age" however it doesn't say that on their website menu. After sitting down for half an hour we finally got a waiter to take our order. When it was my turn to order the waiter said I can't order off the kids menu. I told him I called up and the person I spoke to said it would be fine. The waiter said no. I asked to speak to the manager and the waiter came back without the manager and said I can have the kids meal but without the free drink and sundae. When a customer asks to see the manager you should get the manager! The music was up quite loud so it was hard to hear people talking. $7 for a milkshake that was in a small glass was a ripoff and it tasted like flavoured watery milk, there was no thickness to it. The entrees my family ordered arrived at the same time as the mains (they should have arrived earlier). The food was alright, but with the exorbitant prices and the poor service I will not be going back.

First visit this evening and we were not disappointed. Entrees were, mussels, highly recommend if you like them the sauce was delicious, Seafood chowder, also delicious and tasty and chicken wings. We shared this between the three of us and we loved all of it.
Mains were also on point first time ever my husband couldn’t eat and or finish off all his ribs, my steak was cooked perfectly and the stuffed squid was also tasty.
The service was polite and professional the ambience was lovely and relaxing we would visit here again or sure.

The first time I went with my parents as we are Petone locals so thought we would try the Hook out when it first opened. The meals were flavourless, poorly presented, and dishes ranged in luke warm to cold.

Yesterday evening I thought I would give the Hook one last chance with my partner. She ordered Salmon, which was burnt on the outside, and raw on the inside. The veges were tasteless and appeared to have come out of a frozen supermarket purchased packet. The mash was absolutely tasteless and it had some black squid ink sauce on the plate, which just looked weird and added nothing to the plate apart from make it look like it was swimming in black gunk.

I ordered the 300g rump steak, which was not seasoned at all, and got a little side of slaw with a few thick cut chips which were the best part of the meal.

I explained to the lady taking payment about all of the concerns, her response was "Next time you come, you can buy something else off the menu", we won't be back.

I strongly urge others who are reading this review to look at other eateries around Petone, as the Hook is just a massive let down.

Good, friendly service. The place is clean and modern.
And the food was excellent! My steak was perfect. My girlfriend had a giant plate of pork ribs. And the banoffee pie for dessert was just incredible!
We'll be going back there.

Really disappointed with the food here. Menu looked promising but on delivery it was anything but. Very good waiters, polite and helpful but the food was a complete letdown. Table of six, we ordered entrees and mains.
3 of us ordered the stone grill meals and one other the ravioli.
Entrees served within 15mins, mains up to an hour. Bare in mind that stonegrill is cook your your own so not sure why we waited an hour for chips? The meat was very unappealing and the Prawn tails (not prawns) looked like they weren't long out of the freezer. Hookslaw was tasteless and warm and the sauce provided was irrelevant to the dish.

Ravioli was rubbery and tasted more like mussels than crab. The sauce was oily and not very nice.
Dissapointing. Do not recommend.

The waiting staff were very helpful in helping me choose a gluten free meal. The food was of good quality and nicely presented. It was a very busy night so took over 1hr to receive my main meal.

Had been looking forward to eating here, but sadly it was really underwhelming. I had stuffed squid, which was cooked okay, but everything was bland. Served with a small bowl of sauce that was supposed to be lemon, chilli and soy, but tasted like just soy sauce and didn't go well at all. Not terrible food, but not good enough that I would bother going back again

Great Vietnamese mussels and spot to try iconic NZ Steak and seafood. Recommended with a walk on the beach following :) asparagus for the mains was over cooked - so maybe specify (you are in charge of the stone grill cooking though!)

We waited an hour for our meals and they weren't busy. The ceviche was good but one of our group of four ordered medium rare steak and it turned up well done. Another had the Tex Mex chicken- not much flavor and tough and dry. Disappointing

Went for lunch for the first time - the food we had was nice - the s&p squid was super tender (will get this again) , Thai mussels had a wonderful flavour & was a generous portion, ( must try) whitebait omelette was fluffy & a good serving(recommend) & chicken burger was nice but slightly dry in some parts.
Reasonable standard prices, nice pl, - gave a low rating as the customer service really needs work (waitress forgot 1 of our mains so was a meal short, we were sat in front of the coffee machine which is terrible as we couldn’t have a convo - this table should not be offered)
Will give it another go as the food was good & they are still fairly newish.

Was the first time going here after being told it was fantastic. Very big let down. My partner got the crab ravioli which consisted of 5 overcooked dry crab ravioli on a plate with very little sauce. I had the hawkesbay aged beef and prawns. The meat was tuff and chewy and prawns were undercooked and on top of a heap of salad. I'm glad we had a voucher for half price as the price was definitely not worth the food. The waitress was very friendly and the restaurant was clean. Will not be returning

Unfortunately my rating is based on The Hook providing a buffet menu not up to standards and not a reflection of their menu, also was charged $50 per head for a very unsatisfactory meal. I do feel rather ripped of considering the meals I could have purchased from the menu would have cost me less
