Review Palace Cafe - Petone

Thomas Williams
This place is amazing! I went here for lunch today with 2 work colleagues and had a great experience. The owners were lovely and provided us with great customer service. The food was so delicious and the serving sizes were more than generous considering the cheap prices. I had the satay chicken toasted wrap and it was mouth watering!

Mince on toast with thick gravy was delicious, it had a tinge of sweetness and I added a couple of poached eggs that when popped, complimented the mince. The portion was very generous. The Kings breakfast was fulfilling, delicious and bacon a crunchy delight. Portions and costs definitely worthwhile you visiting.

It was a cold, Saturday morning and the wind blew bitingly down Jackson Street. The only solution was to go to the Palace Cafe and have The Best French Toast in town. The cabinet food looked good also, but 8c with windchill meant that a scone would not cut it. The BFTIT was up to its usual standard (see photo). The FT itself was hot, light and fluffy. The fruit selection was generous and the coffee was tasty and hot also. Plus it arrived promptly. Go there - you won't be disappointed.

I dont ever give 5/5 for the overall review of a place. The food here is really good, good sized portions, good coffee to. Service is friendly. Great atmosphere for a small cafe. It does not look like much but its worth the visit.

Amazing food and service! We ordered the King and French Toast today: the servings were generous and the food tasted great. The fruits with the French toast were fresh - my daughters loved it - and the lady behind the counter was very friendly! Will definitely go there again on our next trip to Wellington/Petone :)

Cute wee cafe on the ever busy Jackson Street, it might not look like me ch but the food is tasty, fast, and the service is friendly and welcoming. The most reasonably priced cooked breakfast options you will find anywhere in Petone!

This is a great old school cafe. Great selection of meals on the menu and in the cabinet. The food and prices are always satisfying. The staff are super friendly and service is always fantastic. I recommend this cafe for great food, great price and great value

Had an extra large soy latte here with a brownie. Was good. Interior a bit tired could do with a spruce up. Otherwise fine.

Don't dismiss this place when in Petone. It's not flash but food is ok and generous for the price. Imagine you're in a food market. That's the Vibe. I think our table was a school desk in the 60s.

Nice and quiet for coffee

My favourite Petone cafe, always friendly staff, good coffee and a nice range of cabinet food. And a secure railing outside to lock my bike to (important in Wellington). Recommended.

Friendly reception, good food well-prepared. What's not to like? Inexpensive, .. and two excellent hot chocolate drinks to follow. We are not often in Petone but I would revisit here.

Really friendly service, food was freshly prepared and presented well. The cafe is a wee bit small and food priced a little higher than I would have liked, but overall a really pleasant place for a brunch or coffee catch up!

Great friendly staff, delicious food even the kids leave happy and full, generous meals and a kick butt coffee!
Quick service and always big smiles
Octagon Pie
Not so good, $17 for Cornfritters which i waited quite a while for! And when they came they were ordinary, undercooked and the bacon was undercooked and burnt at the same time. It was cramped and noisy inside, and my Mums date scone was so overheated it crumbled to pieces. Probably wont be returning here

Lovely little cafe that's open on new years day.
Good place for a group of four to five, anything larger and you may struggle with space/seating.

Coffee was a little on the average side (long blacks) but the we greatly enjoyed the food, well priced and certainly good quality/quantity.

Will visit again if I find myself in the area in future.

We had the verge stack and vegetables nachos..
The vege stack was low quality frozen hashbrowns. Unseasoned mushrooms, wilted spinach and a cooked tomatoes.
Nachos : salsa Doritos (really), patties medium chilli beans spinach (?!?) Piled with sour cream.

Overall it was edible.... I'm not sure the "chef" understands cooking or the concept of seasoning. At least the lemon honey ginger was good... But that's good quality syrup ...

Fun the outside it doesn't seem like much but we decided to try it out. The food selection was good with both a range of cabinet and menu offerings. Was tempted at first by the creamy mushroom crepe but settled on the kiwi fruit with honey crumble slice. I was glad I did. Served with cream, it was very tasty. We also got an oat slice which was a tad heavy and dry.
I'd probably go back for cake and to try menu items

I went for breakfast and had a half size king breakfast at $14.50. I asked the server how many eggs were included in the meal - and was told there were two eggs in a half breakfast. So I ordered an extra egg and toast. So I expected three eggs and three toast and this came to a total of $19.00 -just to put things into context the full kings breakfast was $20.00. However I was fine with this. When the meal arrived there was a rasher of bacon, a small breakfast sausage, a hash brown, half tomato and only two eggs and two slices of toast - when I approached the counter to ask for my third egg and toast, I was told by the same server and another person who seemed to be the Manager , told me that with a half size breakfast only one egg should be expected. The original server blushed and looked away without telling the manager what she told me, so disappointed , I tried explaining the situation and was spoken over by the Manager, so to save myself any further frustration or embarrassment I ordered an extra egg and toast for a further $3.00 -making the total of my breakfast $22.50. For a Kings half breakfast. The fact that I paid extra twice for something that I was told to expected and didn't was very disappointing.

Decided to give place a go this morning, and am decidedly "meh" about this place. Service was nice enough, decor was shabby but cozy since it was warm and they have floor to ceiling windows all round. Got eggs bene and a long black. Long black was really not up to standard- crema dispersed within ten seconds of my receiving it, left a sour, dirty taste in my mouth. Eggs bene came with a mountain of salmon, but that seemed to work against them- their smoked salmon choice was overwhelmingly salty. Eggs on the not cooked enough side. Hollandaise suspiciously thick and gluggy. If youre looking for some good eggs bene and coffee, beannie has a great rendition and is only a minute away.

I went here the other day on a whim. Few places were open at around 7:30am in the Xmas holiday period, but Palace was. I was surprised, very pleasantly. This place is worth visiting. I had an excellent mince on toast with ciabatta toast. My long black was not as good. I will return soon.

My regular fave was closed so gave Palace a go, they do a really good date scone and mocha. The cabinet selection was ok, nothing exciting or innovative. Tables are a bit tatty and too close together.

1st time i went with a friend - it was great atmosphere lovely bit small in seating arrangements but thoroughly enjoyed the food and coffee.

2nd time i went with my husband we saw a customer there with some great looking Nachos (my husband loves Nachos) and in other cafes they have been quite disappointing - i ordered the chicken stack which was ok it was noticeably zapt in the microwave killed a bit of flavour i think, then we heard the staff talk about how they were out of chilli beans my hubby thinking - no, no, no, no.... but they made his nachos which tasted OK- but its just not the same when they have given you nice corn chips n cheese with nice beef mince - then added baked beans with sweet chilli sauce - very disappointing indeed when they took out plates away i said we were not impressed with the nachos becos it had no chilli beans and she said 'sorry we do make it with chilli beans but we had run out' i said "you shouldve told us then we could of had the opportunity to re-order" again she was apologetic and gave us a free piece of carrot cake with yogurt. Nice but not the same.
