Review Dumpling World - Petone

Surely Not
The pork and chive dumplings are absolutely AMAZING, very well priced for what you get.. Steamed dimsums? Not so great, shitake mushrooms, pork fat and prawns were missing... Those 3 ingredients are a must have in siu mai (dimsums). However, the dumplings are brilliant...

Great food. Excellent Crispy Duck and friendly service. The dumplings are hand made and the fillings are all delicious!

This is actually the best Chinese restaurant in Wellington. Went with some friends, we order about 7 dishes and they were all the best version of that dish we had ever tried. Not even exaggerating! A hidden gem to be sure.

Good food with good service

Nice food, the stuffed mushrooms were delicious. The fried rice was a bit odd, it had the odd crunchy bit in it that was unidentifiable, and didn't seem fresh.

The owner was very friendly and the food was so tasty! Definitely recommend sweet and sour pork deep fried 😋

Food was delicious, was a hold up in the kitchen for some reason for the main courses but staff kept us informed and they were very apologetic. When the food arrived it was piping hot and so tasty. The time went quickly, would definately go again and recommend to family & friends. Cost was very reasonable

This is one if my most favorite Chinese eateries in Petone. Reliable and yummy food, dumplings are great (especially pan fried ones), but don't get fooled, all other food is very tasty as well 👍. Yes, interior is a bit tired, but it is well compensated by the quality of the food!

We had dinner here and it was tasty however there was hair in one of our dishes , the popcorn chicken was not as described and we were overcharged .

🍽Sweet and Sour Pork Slice - Well, my husband from the Northeastern China and we have to say it’s not authentic NE food. It’s “westernized” so that maybe it just makes to sell well not to satisfy Chinese customers. But except the sauce (which is the last step and makes the color kinda red), the rest tastes delicious.
🍽Fried Eggplant, Potato and Capsicum - It’s average. So far we didn’t find a place that can make the veggies tastes like meat, which is what the food should be in good chef’s hand.
🍽NE Salad with Clear Noodle - It’s ok. The sauce is good and the noodle is good.
🍽Service is beyond expectations. When we expressed that the pork was not we wanted, the owner came to us and explained that it was modified for the local customers. If we wanted traditional ones, we can order and specify next time.

Lovely service and affordable dishes. We got the beef brisket noodle soup (YUM!!), wonton noodle soup, a plate of dumplings and pan fried buns - SO GOOD! was plenty for 4 people - and split for ways we payed about $11 each. Not bad for a super filling lunch!
Dumpling World has emerged from where Magic Wok once occupied a busy corner on Jackson Street for many years. We'd tried (and failed) to dine at Dumpling World on several occasions but could never quite work out their opening hours. Last weekend, we got lucky and found the lights on and the doors open. The menu is extensive and beautifully presented. We shared classic deep fried pork and chives dumplings to start. They were slightly oily but the filling was delicious. For our main courses, we shared two dishes. The classic orange beef was good but not as flavoursome as we've had elsewhere. The dish we enjoyed most was stir fried shredded pork with Peking bean sauce and pancakes - absolutely delicious and very filling. Service was friendly and efficient and BYO is a bonus. We're keen to come back once we work out when they're open.

Went to try out Dumpling World seeing they had changed names (previously called Magic Wok) and had implemented a new menu.

FOOD
Overall the dishes we had were fairly average. Spring rolls, combination fried rice, sweet and sour pork, shredded pork with pancakes and seafood dumplings were comparable to other Chinese restaurants without being outstanding. Two other dishes we had did stand out – all for the wrong reasons.

The prawn ball with garlic sauce was one of the most miserly starters I’ve come across. Four tiny whole prawns sitting in a pool of garlic sauce. Generally, a prawn ball consists of formed, minced prawn meat and is deep fried – the name of this dish is misleading. At $7.80 this was terrible value for money. Definitely give this one a miss.

At face value the stir fry chicken with potato and noodles in soybean sauce appeared be a very large, impressive looking dish. However, on closer inspection the dish was largely bulked out by vegetables with little in the way of noodles or chicken. The chicken was bone in, consisting mainly of wings and drumettes - but also included some odd cuts such as the chicken back and the thin bone end of the drumstick. These cuts didn’t have much meat and gave the impression they were thrown in to bulk up the dish. The flavour was good but would not order this dish again in it’s current form.

SERVICE
Service was poor. Soft drinks supplied in cans with no glasses and we had to fetch our own serving ware from the wait station, despite it being quiet and two waitresses on duty.

ATMOSPHERE & DECOR
The décor was old and dated. Clearly it had simply been carried over from the previous establishment.

CLOSING COMMENTS & RECOMMENDATION
Better food and service can be had elsewhere.
Overall I would not recommend Dumpling World.

The food was brilliant. We could feel the effort that the chef put into each dish. Not just the dumplings, but all dishes were well presented. It had a lot of choices so we would come back and give others a try. Great service and atmosphere. My wife and I totally loved it.

Good job Dumpling World! I often went there for dinner with my Chinese friends. They commented on the foods as authentic and top-tier. Great value for great food. A lot of choices to choose from. There's always a new favourite for everyone. Highly recommended. Totally worthwhile!

I picked up takeaways from here about 6 months ago and found them to be really good and so tonight I went back to eat inside the restaurant with my family. Everyone agreed that this place has good food - very tasty and enjoyable. There is a large and varied menu with many dishes that I have not encountered before even though I often eat Chinese.
It is a classic Chinese restaurant and the ambience (furnishings, decor and premises) is down market but who cares when the food is good.
I will definitely be returning again and this is currently the best Chinese in Jackson St for me.
We spent $70 for 3 people and shared 3 main dishes plus 2 entrees.
The service was efficient and friendly and no complaints on that score.

It was the first time for us to visit since the change of ownership. The staffs were so friendly and we had a chat with one of the lovely ladies. She mentioned that they named as dumpling world because dumpling was symbolic of Northern Chinese food, which was the type of cuisine they specialized in. (they had great dumplings too!) We tried a lot of new dishes like Mongolian lamb, special sweet and sour pork and pork ribs with spiced salt. The food was incredibly delicious and reasonably priced. Also, they had excellent vegetarian dishes especially five-vege salad and di san sian (which was stir-fry potato, eggplant, and capsicum). We finished with banana ship as dessert. Nice and relaxing atmosphere. It was an outstanding experience for family gathering. Definitely coming back to try out the other dishes!

An oldie but a goodie. A family run business that has been feeding my family for a long time. It is indeed a very casual place but that's why we love it. Tasty food and service. The lovely lady is friendly and always looks after the kids well.

My first and last time at this restaurant.
I gave it 1.5 to be fair, but I don't think this place deserves it really.
I thought the service was poor with the unfriendly woman who didn't even bother to ask how our meal was except for when paying the bill she ask if we enjoyed our meals, to which I replied no. She didn't bother to ask what was wrong with the meal or seam to be interested that we did not enjoy our experience. I was a bit surprised with how much our meals cost and I thought she must have over charged us, but I don't really know as I didn't get the receipt to check what she had actually charged me for.
The place only had one group of fore people seated at one table and it still took a very long time to be given our first coarse which should have only taken 10 minutes or so, and the main meals took even longer, about 40 + minutes for Chinese food it way too long to wait. When the food arrived it was hot, but my dish, garlic squid and vegetables was just totally tasteless and pale looking and unattractive looking, and the squid was chewy.
My brothers meal was somewhat more appetizing and colorful, he had sweet and sore pork which tasted okay.
I am very disappoint I chose this place for dinner when their are so many great places to dine at in Petone.

I would not recommend this restaurant to anybody. The service is non existence / plain old rude. Had to wait more than 30 min for our table to be cleared for dessert and the restaurant only had 3 other tables to serve.

I really don't recommend this restaurant. Worst service ever. The place is dirty and the service is horrible. Never spend your money in this place. There're better Asian restaurants in Petone. Ultimately, someone should teach that Chinese woman a bit of education and how to treat properly the people/customers.

I've always received good food from Magic Wok, nice fresh crisp vegetables and great taste. Service is not the most fantastic and the place could do with a little renovation.

Went last night for the 1st time in over 10 years and while the prices were still good, I do believe we were over charged. Somehow we were charged an excessive amount for a bowl of rice. That said the total bill was still reasonable for what we got. It just didn't add up with the pricing that is on the menu.
Becky .
We have been there a couple of times before, only ordered takeaways as we came to know the pricing for dine in is more expensive than takeaways (2 different menus). Today, only 1 of us ordered our usual. When we went to pick up, the lady overcharged us. After questioning, she insisted that she had charged us correctly, even saying she had given us a discount. Initially, we thought we might have remembered the price wrongly, so didn't pursue any further. When we got home, we checked against previous transactions and came to the conclusion that she has indeed overcharged us and lied about it. Although the food is good, we do not wish to provide unnecessary "tip" each time we order.

We are regular customers and although the dĂŠcor could do with a tidy up, the food is: fantastic, value for money, lots of fresh veges, very tasty, always very hot and with large servings. No corkage and the staff are lovely and friendly.
Duminda Samarakoon
Excellent value for money and the quality is so much better than your corner fish n chip shop doing Chinese meals. I normally take away than dine-in. The crispy chicken, sweet n sour chicken and the veg dishes are highly recommended.

We come here quite often and enjoy it every time! Very casual atmosphere with nice staff. Delicious chinese food and we fully recommend it.
Wendy
This would have to be the worse experience of Chinese cuisine we have ever had. The restaurant is dirty, the seats are filthy and the food not only lacked taste but was cold. The last person out of a party of 8 was served their main meal meal 15 minutes after the first person received theirs. I would certainly not recommend this restaurant and we will never go back.
