Review Persimmon Tree Cafe - Pirongia

Some of the best eggs benedict I have ever had! Very friendly staff, lots of parking and a quiet, pleasant atmosphere. Some local events and art are on display, which are always appreciated! Also a beautiful view!!

Great little cafe in a small town. Staff are friendly and try their best to help. Food is delicious - try the apple and yogurt cake and the salmon quiche. Great setting to sit outside. Highly recommend.

Lovely coffee shop, fast and friendly staff. My flat white was great, enjoyed every sip of it. Newspapers available for customers in comfy couches next to the entrance. Seating outside is a must in a sunny day like today. Toilet was clean and in order. Seems to be quite popular, with plenty of parking and easy to find.

We stopped here as part of our guided tour experience (Hobbiton + Waitomo) and got ice creams and drinks. They serve Tip Top ice creams - we were recommended to get the Hokey Pokey but got the passion fruit and boysenberry ones instead and I’m really glad we did The staff were very friendly and had a nice bit of a chat. We didn’t order coffee or food so can’t speak to that but we grabbed some black currant juice from the cooler and the two ice creams in cups, it was a reasonable and good experience My only gripe was the same lady filled both mine and my partners cups and he got a LOT more boysenberry ice cream than I got passion fruit :( but it’s not even worth taking one star off. Nice seating outside except it was very windy when we were there so we just stayed on the seats inside. Good spot for a break if you’re driving!

Overall a good experience, although staff were particularly terse and lacked the sensibilities of cafe staff. Didn’t bother me but I can see it bothered others in the review. This place is EXPENSIVE. Sausage/apple roll was $15, I’ve seen a similar sized roll for $8 at other cafes (and even that’s expensive). $10 milkshakes seemed a bit excessive too. They also charge 15% on public holidays. Wouldn’t return but I didn’t have a bad experience.

An excellent lunch and coffee stop in Pirongia. Great service, but struggling to get enough staff. Well worth a visit, and all with the magnificent Mt Pirongia in the background.

I love this cafe! It's such a peaceful atmosphere, lovely staff and really genuine food which is all made in-house. This time I had a Lamb, Rosemary and Red Wine pie and it was gorgeous. To round it out there is a huge dog friendly garden seating area. Well worth the drive from Hamilton.

The best part about my experience here is that I happened to like the art on the walls from local artists and I picked out a print to purchase. About 10 minutes later the artist walked in! I got to meet her and tell her that I liked her work so much. As an artist myself, I was so happy to be able to do that. The food was good and the service handled our tour landing all at once with ease.

Enjoyed the food and the experience. The entrance looked a bit tired and not as we remembered.

This is a nice coffee stop with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. It has a large parking area. Tourist buses stop here so factor that in in terms of wait times and seating space. The service was friendly and fast. The outdoor area is extensive but feels under utilised. Small kids playground or other shade seating could help.

Great cafe, amazing food. But the staff... 110% awesome!! Keep up the great mahi

Awesome waffles. Better than the ones at The Fat Kiwi in Otorohanga.

Staff were really busy but were open about the wait time for food. We had the big breakfast and the potato & mushroom stack with a side of fries - yum!

Called in on our way home from National park, heading back to Auckland. It was packed inside but we had our dogs with us so happy to sit outside. We were told we had about a 25 minute wait for our food but we had it served with 15 minutes. The burger was beautiful, lovely home made patty, very tasty. Others had the Burritos which they loved too. We have often stopped at Persimmon Tree Cafe when we have been passing thru over the years. It's good to see that the excellent standards have been maintained. The staff were busy but still very happy and friendly.

We stopped in for lunch on the way from Wellington to Auckland by car. The food was amazing. The service was fantastic. Would recommend to anyone. If you hadn't been cleaning up between lunch and dinner on Saturday, we would have stopped again. Definately a place we will stop again in the future!

A culinary oasis I always take people to or invites others from the Waikato to .Easy parking, a quiet space away from the "main streets" of bigger towns and the food always impresses.

I often pop in to the Persimmon Tree Cafe, usually just for coffee, which is always superb, but occasionally for a snack or a meal, and if I have friends staying from overseas, I always take them there. Why? Because I can guarantee that whatever we have will be delicious and always beautifully and cheerfully served.
I am gluten intolerant but that's never a problem at The Persimmon Tree.

The Persimmon Tree is my favourite cafe, situated with a view out to Mount Pironga, creates a natural rural ambiance and the inside outside dining gives the opportunity make the most of it. I love that the staff are friendly, polite and unobtrusive. I really enjoy the slow roasted quiche, and the sweets make for a very trying decision making experience. Yummy food and great service

We called in here for Sunday lunch. We do not usually complain but the service was average, and the food disappointing. Maybe the chef needs to learn how to prepare and cook eggplant as ours was singed rather then char-grilled, and tasted very bitter. The coffee and mochaccino were both cold. Finally, the chocolate brownie was uncooked in the middle, great if you like licking the mixing bowl, but not acceptable served in a cafe.
We won't be dining here again.

Service non-existent. We drove from Hamilton for what we hoped would be a leisurely birthday lunch. In an almost deserted cafe we waited in vain for almost 15 minutes for a waitress to approach our table (water? wine? how are you today?). We then drove to Te Awamutu where a lovely restaurant was more than happy to accept our order and money. We won't be going back to Persimmon
Tree Cafe - our friends probably won't either.

We often stop in here late afternoons in the weekend on our way through to New Plymouth.
Although we seem to be the last customers they make every effort to treat us well and serve delicious hot food from the menu.
We have been very pleased with our dining experience here and recommend it to all our friends.
Great service, delicious food and fantastic coffee.
Well worth the stop!

We live just down the road from this cafe, and although yes the service is a little more impersonal than maybe some other places, I actually rate the food highly. I have always enjoyed my meal, and last April we decided to try an evening meal. I had steak on a bed of wilted greens. I had to say I cannot remember dessert as the steak was SO memorable, to the point I still bore my friends about it! This was probably the single most delicious meal I have ever eaten bar none, and I urge you all to give this place a go- and order the steak, its to die for....

Dined there today, 24/11/10, had a BLAT and Steak sandwich. Found the food to be of an average standard. Not worth the drive from Hamilton at all so therefore we will not be revisiting

I too have been a regular here now for a couple of years so perhaps am qualified to respond to the last review. The service has always been rather 'tired' which I have put down to often being because we are one of the last customers of the day. Some staff are smilier and friendlier than others but none of them have ever bothered to introduce themselves or ask our names; surely a pre-requisite for encouraging loyalty?
I'd like to see a change in the food available from time to time to keep things interesting.

As usual the food was lovely when we had lunch yesterday (05/10/10), although the mushroom and rice risotto was a bit flavourless. However the poor service ruined our lunch. We waited for the usual long time for the wine to be served (if they brought this out earlier they would possibly sell a couple of glasses per diner). Then we waited for a long time for our dishes to be removed and the next course served. 4 stars for the food. 2 for service. This was after all a lunch not a leisurely dinner.

I am a regular at the Persimmon Tree cafe and have been going there since it opened. I am always impressed by their quality of food, level of service and general ambience of the cafe. The food and staff are what keep me going back. Andrew and Michelle are excellent hosts and work really hard at maintaining the high standards.
The food is varied, priced appropriately, always fresh and tasty.
The cafe is child friendly and the open grounds provide plenty of space for the kids to burn off those delicious desserts.
I can not understand why some previous comments are not so favourable: perhaps they are the jealous owners or friends of competing businesses.

We were very disappointed in this place. We'd heard that it was the best place to eat in Pirongia, so stopped in on a cold Saturday for a late lunch. The cakes looked really nice, so we ordered one BLAT to share between two (so we could save room for cake). We never got to dessert, as the lunch was so poor. The BLAT was tiny, with half a rasher of skinny overcooked bacon and way too much sauce. The chais we ordered tasted like instant coffee with cinnamon on top. The lunch was definitely not worth the price (listed as $24, but mysteriously became $25.60). We ended up going to Pirongia village cafe for dessert.

What a fabulous lunch we had at Persimmon Tree Cafe. Fresh and delicious food which was also really interesting - no boring meals here. Then relaxing with really smooth coffee and yummy carrot cake. The kids liked the kids menu and then played on the big lawn leaving us to relax. We'll certainly be back.
