Review Toptaste Restaurant - Porirua

Absolutely delicious. The food was sensational and the service top notch. We did find it a bit pricey $195 for 2 adults and 1 kid. 3 entrees, 3 mains and a sundae for our kid. 2 beers and a soft drink. However due to the delicious food and amazing service we would definitely go again.

I've seen Top Taste restaurant for years in passing and now regret not dinning out there sooner. Staff were friendy and efficient, food was of excellent quality and nice surroundings. I had the classics of chicken and corn soup (to start) and sweet and sour pork. Both are what you expect and tasty. My partner had satay chicken with noodles, tasted wonderful. When food is ordered you can get a small or a large. Small was fine for a person. We did see the large portions and they would be perfect for groups to share. Nice going Top Taste, I'll be back.

Great service, prompt and efficient. Plenty of options and great variety, food freshly cooked. Group of 8 and all very satisfied with meals

First time to Top Taste for about 5 years. Great selections on entrees and mains. Our family of 4 enjoyed 3 entrees shared, the Wontons, Pork buns and duck triangles. Mains were very nice too, but if you want to get to a dessert then order the small main. They do offer take home containers too, and these are recyclable. Desserts of cheesecake, ice cream and sorbet were also enjoyed.

Great family restaurant. Lovely ambience, where the music does not over-power the conversation. We had the 3 for 2 deal on a Thursday. A great idea for large groups.

Great authentic Cantonese food, catered to fit NZ taste even better. Their sauce is like magic. Owners are very friendly people that can enjoy a relaxing chat and share a few laughs. Top 2 best restaurant in Porirua City.

Great environment, great service. Not authentic Chinese restaurant, although it's run by Chinese. The Chinese food, with European infusion. If you want authenticity, this may not be the place for you. Still food was tasty, great location with easy parking. Hence the 5 stars.

Best service with kids! We’re visiting from Australia and dropped in for dinner on our last night in New Zealand (also my husband’s birthday). We felt so comfortable and welcomed - all of the staff were amazing to our kids! The food was also really yummy, I strongly recommend the sizzling satay beef. Thank you again!

This place was pretty good. The staff were great, good menu and lovely decor and decoration. The food was good, but not quite as good as we were expecting based on everything else about the place. It would probably be amazing with friends and sharing, which is more what the menu seems designed for.

My chicken satay noodles were so delicious 😋. We were kinda booted out by 9pm as they wanted to close up though 😅

Ginormous portion when I ordered a nasi goreng. Good taste and a reasonably long wait on a Friday evening

After sending our raw dim sum back we got a new lot after our mains arrived. We weren’t overly keen on a second round. When We went to pay and expected that we wouldn’t have to pay for them but were charged. when questioning the arrogant young man said “well you got a cooked set”. Grrrrr customer service is so important. They have lost our business and anyone who asks us what they are like. Shame on you for not having a customer focus!!!!!!

Wife and I were disappointed. Portions are big but it’s mainly filler - rice and veggies. You don’t get much of what you order whether pork, chicken or other. So with this being the case would say it’s over priced when compared to other restaurants but I guess Porirua is somewhat of a captive market.

Went here for lunch was going to eat in, didn’t even get asked if takeaway or eat in, was sitting at a table and the lady yells out to me meal is ready.. ended up taking it away.. average at best only ate a little bit and threw the rest out and got a meal from down the road.. poor experience

We were 50/50 on our main. Good sized portions considering we ordered small plates. Our starters were good but you can't really go wrong with fries and garlic bread. Service was fantastic and atmosphere was really great. We felt very comfortable here and the staff made us feel very welcome.

Was there last week, good service and atmosphere. The flavour of the food was a bit conservative for me, abit more flavouring would have been nice. I found this place to be a bit pricey for what it was offering. May return at some stage.

Honestly the best salt n pepper squid in Porirua. Orange Beef is pretty good. Chicken and cashew if you want lots of veges! Get fresh spring rolls wontons and dim sims they are all pretty tasty. Best chinese in Porirua.

We have had meals at Top Taste for many years. When they moved to their present premises a few years ago, they spent a lot of money on a high quality fit-out. Very sadly, the quality of the food changed for the worse. We had two very disappointing meals one of which we commented to the mother? about. For example, I recall that the won ton soup had tasteless stock and very ordinary won tons. After waiting some months, we tried again, and the service was poor as well as the food.
After an absence of a few years, we decided last night to give it another try.
IT WAS GREAT! The menu is totally different to before. There were 4 of us and we all enjoyed a very pleasant meal, competently and cheerfully served.
The Mains of special note were Ginger Duck and Korean Stone Pot, but the entrees and other dishes were very tasty as well.
It is really good to again have a high quality Chinese Restaurant in Porirua!

We dined at Top Taste last week. The food was excellent as always. I recommend the duck triangles entree. The staff were lovely. I've never been disappointed dining here.

Went for Dinner last night, hadn't booked but they had room for us. Seated us and gave us water. Then ignored us for 20 minutes.... no menu, no offer of a drink. We got up and left. Pity as their food has been pretty good in the past - pity about the service. Went over the Road to Peppermill who have started a Dinner Menu - had amazing service and good food.

We have dined in once, which was absolutely amazing! Beautiful food and top-notch service.

Their take-away's are just as amazing, in particular we love their Thai Chilli Beef Noodles, Orange Beef and Lemon Chicken dishes. The meat is always succulent!

We always try treat ourselves to their food once a month or so, travelling half an hour each way......it's that good!

The food was excellent and full of flavor. However, the service was terrible. We ordered a ‘small’ version of the main. When it came to our table I did comment that it was quite big but any way we started eating it. Soon after the waitress came to our table and said that they gave us a large by accident and did we want to pay for a large.. We said no. So she said she had to take it away and reduce the size. A few mins later they bought it back ( it was the same meal just cut smaller). They also forgot to bring us the rice that we were told came with the meal. When we went to pay the waitress failed to recognize that they had done anything wrong and was rude. I have been to top taste many times but that was the last. Very disappointing.

We have dined at the restaurant in the past, approximately 6 months ago so I can understand the positive reviews here. Tonight we decided on takeaway from this place and bought some stuffed mushrooms, fried chicken, fish and chips, rice, prawn crackers and two $16.50 seafood combinations, all to the value of $82. Well the biggest mistake I have made in twenty years. The food was disgusting--the batter on the battered food was horrible-layers of fat dripping off as we tried to eat this food. The $16.50 seafood combo was 95% vegetables (which were frozen and bland. The little seafood in there was obviously cooked from frozen-no taste to it. Avoid like the plague people-don't say I haven't warned you.

We LOVE this place! Been here half a dozen times now and we always get treated like royalty. Staff are excellent with kids and even give them colouring in paper and pencils while they wait for their meals. Ambience is lovely and quiet and food is amazing! Always well presented and taste wonderful. And their dessert cakes are to die for! Thoroughly recommend Top Taste to anyone wanting to dine out in Porirua City.

We have been visiting Top Taste Restaurant for several years now. We love the quality of the food so much that we drive all the way down from Palmerston North just to eat there. We have spent several birthday dinners at Top Taste. It is well named, the food is outstanding.
The restaurant is decorated with beautiful lights and Chinese paintings, with no loud music or other distractions.
The staff are friendly and well mannered. The food is authentic Chinese cuisine and the helpings are generous. My mum has special dietary requirements and the chef made her a delicious plain fish and vegetable stirfry on request- no wonder it's her favourite place to eat!
The desserts are very good, (I had a quite nice tirimasu last visit), especially compared to some Chinese places we have been to, but we tend to focus on the Chinese food when we eat there.
For three of us, all we can eat usually costs around $70-80, including a pot of Chinese tea and a bowl of rice on the side. The size of the meals makes it very good value.
Overall I would highly recommend Top Taste for a nice low-key evening meal or lunch with a relaxed atmosphere.
I felt compelled to write a decent review on Top Taste after I saw a couple of mediocre reviews here which it doesn't deserve.
Hope this was helpful.

Three people, four entrees and three mains, and every item was delicious. The menu included a good variety of ingredients & methods, several unusual dishes, and clear descriptions. Surprise find: Cream Cheese Dumplings - what the Americans call "Crab Rangoon": a deep-fried wonton stuffed with cream cheese, crab (surimi, here) and chopped spring onion. Health food! The service was cheerful and faultless.

There was one major flaw.

Where steamed rice is a key part of a particular dish, a portion should be included in the price. Charging extra for rice with a curry or stir fry is like charging extra for the spaghetti under your bolognese sauce, or for the rice with your Beef Stroganoff. It's becoming more and more common (and substantial) in Chinese, Thai and Indian establishments. I usually vote with my feet, politely telling the manager why on my way out. But last night, we'd already ordered before remembering to ask about rice.

Not only was it was not included with any of our three mains - not one of which would normally be consumed without rice - Top Taste had the highest prices I've ever seen for steamed rice. $3 for a tiny bowl - maybe 20 cents worth of ingredients, with near-zero cooking effort or skill (biff rice in an automatic rice cooker with some water). The "medium" bowl cost $7.50 (80 cents worth of rice?). A large bowl went for $11. I hope it was a *really* large bowl because $11 will buy enough rice to make SEVENTY cups.

Paying several dollars for a few cents worth of rice to accompany a $26 bowl of curry leaves me feeling mistreated and insulted. As excellent as the meal and service were, I won't return - except maybe for some takeaway cream cheese dumplings.

The food was fantastic! I recommend the duck curry. Very very good. Service let itself down tonight. There is usually an asian girl on who is fantastic but she wasnt there.

I give them 5 stars, only for their takeaway. We have tried a few in this area and this one is the best!

Their dishes have a reasonable amount of food for your money. They are very friendly and get your order out fast.

We eat here often and when friends or family come into town, it is reasonable and cheerful! =)

My wife and I have dined there at least once a month for around ten years. The service is colourful and you get different quality service everytime you go there. DONT go there expecting five star service , relax and enjoy the staff and they will enjoy you as well. The food rates higher than the service sometimes but , hey , that's life.

Excellent food, been there multiple times...never had a problem with service, lovely people. Can't get over how good their food is !

Food was tasty, but poor value for money based on porirua prices. Confusion with booking. service poor as we needed to keep asking. Banquet plates arrived seperately and 5-10minutes inbetween.
Know of 2 other places in porirua I would recommend before this place,

Place had a nice light feeling to it. Have brought many takeaway meals from here. Took a big group out to dinner as a treat. The food was absolutely delicious...once we received it. Service was absolutely appalling!! We spent more time waiting for service, even having to take the dessert orders ourselves to ensure we got them within a reasonable timeframe. Dirty dishes still on the table from our entree on our exit. Would not recommend group bookings even when booked in advance.
